    Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video, "What Does Artificial Intelligence Music Sound Like?". I really think this is one of the most interesting topics I've ever discussed on the channel. OpenAI is a research lab that was co-founded by Elon Musk a few years ago. Since then, they've made remarkable advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc. The thing I'm most interested in is their project, Jukebox. They created this neural net that can generate music, musician's voices, specific genres, instruments, original lyrics, and so on. It's so, so cool and I'm so glad I can get the chance to show you. What do you think of artificial intelligence music? Is it the future?

      @Shangrilla _ ai will definitely be able to make good music, it's just a matter of when

    • @santeripe
      @santeripe 4 роки тому +3

      @Shangrilla _ The AI wouldn't have to come up with an entire song, it could just generate 100 short demos of a certain mood/energy that a producer could pick the best bits from to form a catchy pop song. And if an AI is trained with over a million songs like here, it isn't going to just copy chords or melodies from one of these songs. It only learns which notes/chords usually follow previous ones in pop music, and generates melodies based on this information. A real producer who listens to music is just as likely to accidentally copy something.

    • @geraldreimertz
      @geraldreimertz 4 роки тому +1

      @Shangrilla _ I don't want to disillusion you, but it's really just a matter of time. What we are listening to are just the first steps. The next step is a so called discrimater, that determines if a song sounds handmade or not, if not, it will pass the task back to the AI to generate a new / optimized version of the song. And so on and so on. This process is called reinforcement learning. After enough training data, it is able to generate music that you cannot distinguish from human made music. How I know? The exact same process is already in use to generate images, faces etc. and artists using it as their muse. Because the AI is able to invent new painting styles, the artist would have never think of. The concept, that it behaves on fixed variables or that humans have to tell it what to do is not true anymore.

    • @KrisVTran99
      @KrisVTran99 4 роки тому

      @Shangrilla _ if you think about it, given a certain fixed length of a track, there is a finite amount of music pieces you can create which is bounded by the human hearing frequency range. Of course the majority of which would be a bunch of gibberish mess but theoretically we will run out of music. And just based solely on the speed of which computers can generate them, we can achieve that in no time. Then pair it with the musical understandings that the AI harnessed, it can quickly pick out all that can be considered music by human standard.
      It's just my shower thought though, nothing serious.

    As a musician, I'm interested to see how far AI songwriting will go. Idea of machine learning to write songs implies that there's a measurable degree of value to such subjective concepts as evoking emotions and feelings - like how certain scales and keys are more popular, musical instruments vary in how they appeal to the ear, chords have and may change their emotional color depending on a context and so on.
    I mean, songwriters and producers have been tinkering with "hit song formula" for decades now, but the whole idea spoke more of commodifying music and making sure buck rather than understanding what of our current music taste is specific cultural heritage and what is appealing on a universal level.
    It is unlikely that AI will dominate pop charts of the world any time soon due to sheer cultural differences and variety of existing music and tastes, but the fact itself of AI joining the race and succeeding in evoking response in people's hearts will tell us a lot about how music works and ourselves, along with raising serious philosophical questions and implications.
    I'll go back to my 0-3-5 for now, waiting for the future to come.

Considering the music it currently puts out already sounds like a step towards that experimental/PC music sound, I'm curious to know if it would run with the sound, try to make it sound more like "traditional" music, or do something else entirely. It'd also bee cool to see (in the future of course) how people who make experimental music use the AI to their advantage, especially in combination with more traditional production/instrumentation.

    With lip-syncing in the '80s, the musicians didn't even need to know how to play.
    With the 2010's, we're building digital celebrities that can replace human celebrities at the audience level.
    With the 2020's, we're building music algorithms that will replace composition.
    Regardless, there will eventually be a way to generate a HD 3D model of a human being by algorithm.
    By 2030, the pop industry might be full of celebrities who were generated by bigwigs pressing 3 buttons on their laptop when they felt like they needed a little revenue boost.

    If anyone's interested in other types of AI music; check out Ray Kurzweil on "I've Got a Secret" from 1965 or David Cope's work. Cope trained his computer to write music in the style of composers like Bach or Beethoven but using text data rather than audio data so currently the results come out much cleaner and natural sounding than OpenAI - not to say that OpenAI won't get to that level though!

    One thing an AI cant calculate or judge is heart and soul in music, music transcends what we know about the universe and can give you a glimpse of a level of consciousness we dont really have access to. No computer can tell the difference between two songs that are sonically or lyrically similar, but where one lacks emotion and creativity.

    So a program like this could honestly be huge for the Movies and Games industry, Instead of buying a license for/ commissioning a song for a project, someone could just buy a license for the program and have the AI make the soundtrack, meaning more of the budget can be used for other aspects of the project, and resulting in a better project
    On the flip side of it would create a lot more competition for the people who are currently making the music to be used in other media, but there will always be people who want to use the talent of real people for their projects.

      Not hard to imagine at all.
      "AI music" is gradually improving. It seems to be approaching human capabilities, it may eventually exceed them.
      Human music, on the other hand, has already been degraded and continues to diminish in quality each generation.
      (People have already been complaining about bad music for many decades, of course, but the difference is that an ever-increasing number of human "musical artists" today are ignorantly locked into niche genres, usually don't study any music theory or composition, cannot read music, typically cannot play even a single musical instrument.)

    It's pretty scary to me that they are trying to somewhat replace humans with A.I. and nothing can replace the real human emotions in music. Music normally is created from what is going on in that period of time in history and in that persons life which then the emotion is placed and infused in their music, creating some of the most remarkable sound and unforgettable music in history. A.I. can never replace that and will never sound authentic to the human ear.

  • @randallbatson

    You hit it at the last minute, what about intellectual property rights, mimicking your favorite artist and profiting the makers of the software? There would have to be royalties, or blocking. Tom Macdonald covered this in his track Cloned Rappers. If they own your name your person you could never profit.

    • @that_deadeyegamer7920

      That's not true. Music and art hold a strange sentimental value to humans, and because of this no matter how advanced AI gets there's a certain soul and love in our art and music that will always be appreciated.

    • @raphaelkelly861
      @raphaelkelly861 4 роки тому +4

      To me, I feel as though it makes sense that machines can create raw music and art, since it can analyze hundreds of examples with high efficiency. In reality, this is honestly what's going on in human heads too, since we hear influences and our brain can formulate these things subconsciously. However, what machines don't have is the ability to choose what to create (debatable). As far as I know, machines can always create things, but you need a human in order to choose what to create. That's the biggest thing and that's what real creativity is. Any artist could spew out a bunch of seemingly objective works, but because human processing power is finite, we have to discern what it is we want to put effort into creating, and what emotions to put into it. As of now, machines can only carry out tasks, by whatever means necessary, but they cannot create their own tasks, goals, and ambitions. This may change, but I hope it doesn't honestly.
