Rarely have I clicked so fast on a reaction posting! This is my #1 Pink Floyd song (enough so that my car's license plate is ECHOES). This track represents everything that was and is Pink Floyd - it has the psychedelic, it has the ambiance, it has the groove, it has the rock out, it has the impeccable vocals of Dave and Rick!! What more could you ask for but for another go! From the opening sonar 'ping' to the albatross wail to the fade out - pure perfection!!
@@HAP3SPEAKZ spot on. Looking at (& listening to) their entire catalogue, they paid homage to their earlier psychedelic roots (Saucerful of Secrets, Careful With That Axe, et. al.), and also gave a solid glimpse of what was to come in Dark Side Of The Moon. The elements were all there! Whenever I listen to this track, I'm always amazed at how fast 23 minutes & change goes by! Thanks for your analysis - you made my morning!
@@HAP3SPEAKZ i get goosebumps every time i listen this song...really ! And i've already listened to it dozen (and dozen ) of times . Every time. Really
I like your experience of going through a dark vortex and entering to green pastures. Hadn't thought quite that way. I've always felt like it was under water with whale song and returning to the surface. The ability for a piece of music to so craftily evoke thoughts and emotions is rare among modern music. That's what is so wonderful about Pink Floyd's music. Great reaction! Continue your journey!
Great reaction buddy. I've heard this song a gazillion times.... never gets old. The song in it's entirety is epic.... but that build up ... that vortex as you called it is ULTRA UBER EPICLY EPIC. No words to describe it.
Richard ( Rick ) Wright to me was the back bone of pink Floyd. You were so right about the time frame of music. Back then was made from the band without the technologies of today. A great way to describe it. Jimmy Hendrix the sounds he played with his guitar. But your spot on. Love Your Reactions Thanks again for more Pink Floyd
Awesome! Your best Floyd reaction yet. My favorite Floyd song, every time I listen to this (at least 500+ times in the last 35 years) I discover something new, so much going on in there.
Yesssssssss! Their masterpiece, IMO....so young when they did this - amazing 🔥🎶🔥 David & Rick doing the vocals on this song. Watch the live version from Pompeii on your own sometime!
I dropped a lot of acid listening to this album in the 70's. They went deep....very deep, but you were a better person if you made it out the other end mentally. Brings back a lot of memories. Great times.
Just got to the end of your video - believe it or not, this song was developed live! It had elements of previous studio tracks never released, tidbits of stuff they developed over time. It was originally named 'Nothing Parts 1-24", then subsequent revisions "The Son Of Nothing' and 'The Return Of The Son Of Nothing' as they chiseled it down to what we came to know and love! I'm so glad they never gave up on it - what a sonic masterpiece!
Yep listening to the original vinyl side two of Meddle is the way I first found it. (more than 40 years ago 🤨) Then, finding Echoes live at Pompeii was a revelation, as I expected it to be a concert performance. Instead, no audience, filmed in broad daylight you get to see two guitars, one drum kit and one keyboard synth and somehow it's a studio quality sound! With David & Richards harmony, Roger and Nick feeding off each other, and towards the end of part one, David really playing the hell out of the lead guitar part! I know you've done the original studio but it's such an eye opening experience to see the guys playing it live!
Many people react to a half of this great song, and this is sad for me. Glad you didn't miss the second part. This song is so special for me, I've been listening to it almost every morning for about 5 years, more then 1000 times for sure. Sorry my broken English, looking forward for your reaction to the live version (both parts!).
I enjoyed this reaction. "Spiritual rock & roll right here!" I thought that was good. Also; experiencing a vortex to green pastures - Great interpretations - excellent! I first heard this 'album side' when I was around 13 years old (1972) and in those days we were all wondering how Pink Floyd made their sound? It was a fascinating time. I think you are correct, frequency responses do play a part. I think as long as the music 'moves' you then nothing else matters. It is clear for me that Echoes is one of the most remarkable recordings to ever emerge from a recording studio. Thanks for uploading - Liked.
Great reaction and interpretation! Very glad you’re impressed by these 4 musicians. Looking forward to more PF reactions of your choice. Thanks Hap3! ❤️
heart them 3 times live,I´m an old Floyed fan, like your reactiones, there so much great stuff for you in the future, but my absolute favorit thing is "Atom Heart Mother Suite" from 1970.Have the eggs to do something like this as a rockband in this time. But you said it,they did it for themselves, must say I never realized it bevore I saw your video! Greetings from Germany
When you talk about recording techniques back then, that's so true, Pink Floyd were always ahead of their time when you talk about studio work, if you haven't heard dark side of the moon, it will prove it again to you.
The high pitched whale and bird sounds were done by David Gilmour plugging in his input/outputs the other way around and the wind was created by Roger Waters sliding up and down on his bass. Talent
Your reaction videos are really enjoyable! You gotta do one for 1994 Pulse concert of the song SORROW, wow! You will love the whole production. These are also on par, same concert: COMING BACK TO LIFE LEARNING TO FLY HIGH HOPES every song from that concert is fantastic and all have remastered versions on youtube. Keep it up!
This song was described by David Gilmour as a musical conversation between him and Rick Wright (keyboards and vocals). David Gilmour, incredible guitarist and vocalist. You’re exactly right about that part of the song being like a vortex opening up into an explosion of beautiful sounds. Please also check out Echoes live from Pompeii 1972, parts 1 and 2.
They originally called this song 26 pieces of nothing. Reason being, they put the song together over a long period of time like a year and kept adding to and adding to until they had the final piece of work. The song Started accidentally when Richard Wright was sitting at his keyboard and tapped one of the keys that he had reverberating through what he called a Leslie and it made that sonar ping. When that happened to everyone in the bands ears perked up and they said "hey you have something there" and they went on from there to write this masterpiece! One more point of Interest, "Andrew Lloyd Webber" stole the basic music from this song for his Phantom of the Opera score. Rodger Waters didn't realize it for a while, thought of suing him, and then just thought it wouldn't be worth it. Kind of a funny thing! This song truly is a journey!!!
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_speaker This is the LESLIE speaker through which Rick passed the signal of his piano's microphones, processed with his beloved Binson Echorec unit, to obtain that sound that is certainly the initial "sonar", but continues throughout the piece.
I know this is a second entry and I'm hogging up entry space but I used to imagine during this song being on a magic carpet with a dampening field around it so I wouldn't feel any wind. And floating up through the trees until I got to the top of them. Then when the music picked up speed I would pick up speed flying over the tops of the trees till I was going so fast it was like a blur. Then when that Crescendo of Music hit with the guitar I would imagine myself bursting out over something like the Grand Canyon where everything was going fast and suddenly it looks like it's almost not moving. So your sensation, many of us have imagined some scenario like that.
The next time you listen to this piece, when you get to the funky bit time it and add 30% more volume just as it starts, then concentrate on ALL the guitar parts as you let the funky bit drive the music over your brain....👍 I like to think that the middle eerie bit is the "Echo of a distant time..." talked about in the first verse. Hence the name of the song. When your day turns to shit and you’ve had a crappy day,…come home, pour a scotch (or something similar), drink that. Pour another. Drink that. Pour a third. Take that drink and go turn the lights off. Put on this Pink Floyd album. Go find a bean bag or soft leather couch, put on your headphones and sink down into the couch and sip away the final drink and let the music soothe your soul…
Love your reactions. Time for "The great gig in the sky"? And if you view the LP, you can't see any cuts. Typically Pink Floyd. The albums songs just passed into each other, like the complete album is a symphony on its own....

As others have said, Echoes was born over time from many different improvisations. In its "almost" final form it has been performed in dozen of concerts of the "Atom Heart Mother World Tour" starting from 12 September 1970. I had the immense fortune of participating in one of the 2 held in Italy on June 20, 1971 ... and it was then that it "bewitched" me. The PF have always refused, even for the hectic times of a hundred of dates all over the world, but when Maben arrived with the proposed setting in the Pompeii amphitheater ... they became enthusiastic about the idea. The shooting was scheduled in a hole of the tour for a few days in September 1971. Unfortunately technical problems made half of those few days unusable ... and then part of the footage was lost (much Gilmour) so the processing was extended until the following DSOTM recording sessions in 1972. The final film therefore arrived very late compared to forecasts and with substantial changes ... and certainly not for improvement. In fact it was dominated by DSOTM ever since its concert previews (usual PF practice). However, it remains something unique and unforgettable. Not to be missed!

the sounds of the "sea gulls" at about the 22:00-26:00 mark are made from running his guitar backwards thru a wah-wah pedal (guitar out to the pedal...but IN the OUTPUT jack and then OUT thru the INPUT jack)...then thru his gear....then rolling his tone control on his guitar up and down (not the volume).......no real synths back then......
