In this video I will show you how you can easily create planets in Photoshop using Photoshop's layer styles and a simple texture.
This tutorial is for intermediate users that already know how to use basic Photoshop tools.
The idea of creating planets in Photoshop came to me when I was working on my manipulation Time Goddess: • Time Goddess - Advanc... I was not able to find suitable stock images so I created the planets myself.
The secret to creating realistic Photoshop planets is just making the right shadows and lighting effects using layer styles. Paying attention on details is important and also if you need it use a photo of a real planet as reference to see how the light bends around the planet.

I think it is better if you use "spherical map" or "map to sphere" or whatever it is called in photoshop.

Never heard of it to be honest 😅. Of course I could also use the 3D features and texture it in a much more realistic way but I wanted to show an easier technique that anybody could try

I agree with Hani; this kinda looks flat because the texture you are using is still flat; there are no curves in it to simulate the spherical nature of a planet. Filter > Distort > Spherise is the way to convert your texture to a more "planet-looking" texture for your planet.
Give it a try; it's still pretty simple and can still be combined with your technique and kept so that anyone can give it a try.
I have found that there are so many different textures that you can use to create a planetary texture other than the obvious rock ones; Close up images of lichen, algae, microscopy, ophthalmic (eye) imagery, just to name a few. NASA and Google Earth are also great, as is blending several images (but that's getting a bit more involved).
I just thought I'd through up these ideas so others can have a go at some space are in Photoshop ;)
