    I had only played the director's cut so all the bosses could be defeated by hacking and stealth.
    I never realized that the original didn't have that.

      yeah i loved the game but the boss fights were pure cancer. the i think third boss - the guy who looks like he's got no skin was nearly impossible when going for a nonlethal stealth build and having foolishly gotten that 'upgrade' which just makes you lose augmentations

    Luckily, we have the director's cut now which actually allows for the whole "stealth approach" to be viable in boss fights AND incorporates that near godly DLC that they had. Oh, and it gives you a silenced sniper rifle, something the normal game severely lacked.

    • @uchytjes10

      The problem with the Director's Cut is that they still had to stick with the base concept, you had to shoot the bosses until they died. The changes gave you variety, but it didn't at all cater to the purists(which is a larger group than you think). The Missing Link's fight was perfect though.

      It's extra-lucky that you had to buy the entire game again at full price to get that, or buy the single chapter they hacked out of it for later sale at roughly half the price of the full game to get its complete story before the "Director's Cut". We're such lucky people.

      And yet this isn't an issue in the later Metal Gear games. You can get spotted and kill whoever saw you before they say anything, and no alert happens. Or if they die as they're calling an alert, it goes to caution and they send someone to investigate. There's no excuse for omniscient telepath guards in a modern stealth game.

And you don't even have to make a step.

    Though in the game the debate really seem to lean toward augmentation being unnatural it really felt to me like the TRUE problem it caused was the heavy relliance on neuropozyne which is quite expensive

    • @MegaZeta
      @MegaZeta 5 років тому +18

      Then Human Revolution's fictional politics still make little sense, because that would lead to people demanding subsidized access to clear and unambiguous improvements to their standard of living that have been kept out their reach with a price tag, not people ranting that such improvements are unnatural _because_ they're expensive and should be banned. We know that because that's exactly what happens in our world. Even the kooks who think that vaccinations, etc., are "unnatural" don't think that because they or other people can't afford them.

      I feel like it's helpful to remember that at the time (And Hbomb does mention this), DX'HR was a real curveball in the generally bland/mediocre pool of AAA releases, most of which Yahtzee had to play. Human Revolution is a good game today, in 2022.
      Never having played it before and having been disappointed by Cyberjunk 2077,
      I loved it and 100% it.
      Human Revolution's worldbuilding is engaging, the earnest voice acting and scripts come off as credible
      (except for Jensen himself), and the story, its questions and their possible answers are far better presented
      than anything released in the last five years, also showing how mediocre are the Fortnite times we live in.
      Sadly, Mankind Divided was not as good, concise and poignant.
      Human Revolution is worth full price.
      Mankind Divided is a Buy on Sale affair.
      Really poetic when you think about it.

    I'm not a fan of the "Ending-Tron 3000" But the reason why the endings didn't show you what happened to the world was because there was supposed to be some ambiguity about it to make you think if you made the right choice.
    Especially the suicide ending, you have no idea what the world will do, you pulled a Snake Plisken and just let the world do what it wants without being persuaded in any direction. I think it's important that they don't show what happens because that would cheapen the impact.

      An ending closes an arc. There was no arc closure, it was a misstep of the basics of storytelling. If DE games aren't about the world, why is there so much flavor text? Why is there so much effort put into fleshing it out? The main characters of both games are men who shoulder the burden of affecting how the world is shaped at a crucial turning point in history. The world is directly affected by their actions, and we saw none of it in any HR endings.

    Yahtzee guessed _Human Revolution's_ DLC correctly before his guess in this video: at the time, he was one of the loudest voices arguing that what companies were pushing as DLC was often just a part of the game they withheld until an extra fee was paid by the player. Sure enough, the game leaves out a chapter of its story, which Square Enix promptly announced for sale as new content and actually had the stones to name "The Missing Link".

      Kevin Traberg The way I heard it going down was that the boss fights had to be out scoured to a different studio due to time or budgetary strains. So they weren't privy to the actual process and tone that the rest of the development cycle was working on.
      When the "director's cut" came about it obviously had the content the original creators were going for but couldn't meet the initial commercial release.

    In the defense of Human Revolution, the Director's Cut did fix the boss fights. yes, they still die, but you end up with more ways to take them out. As for the ending, they had more games planned so they left it kind of open ended. Also, as for the weapons training thing. Adam was ex swat. The funny thing about this game now, as I understand it, is that in the Directors Cut version, they in fact made the boss fights more friendly towards stealth players. I have been playing the game more recently and have actually gotten somewhere in the story, and it seems that the stealth mechanics have become more refined in Deus Ex Human Revolution DC ( I had the original played it for a bit, found out about the DC version and have been catching up to where I had left off).

      Yep, all the boss fights are now doable for non-combat play styles. You still kill the boss, just not directly. First major boss you can run away from, hack into a security room and activate a bunch of turrets that riddle him with bullets instead. Which is nice.
      However, I am hoping that a future title allows for non-violent resolutions to boss battles. A bit like with the first 'boss' in the factory who you can talk down rather then kill.

    Hey now, DX1's non-lethal options were pretty damn strong IMO! True, the tranq crossbow does make people run around like headless chickens for awhile before they drop but they do ALWAYS drop which is useful when your gun skills still suck. Also the riot prod is straight up OP; you can instantly knock out or at least stun an enemy even with no skill points spent and you can do it without alerting even people right next to them. You can even use it on MiBs and commandos if you do it right. Gas grenades are also extremely strong!

    I prefer a game where the path you choose leads you to a certain ending it adds replay value like Fallout New Vegas did, In a game where in the end it doesn't even matter what you did and they just give you a selection of different endings. i.e. the three buttons in Deus Ex Human Revolution, or the choose your color ending in Mass Effect 3 you just load your last saved file push a different button and that's it. I'll have to take point's for that.

    A large part of the plot was that not only could people get augmentations by choice, but when injured or hospitalized, augmentations were put in when deemed necessary by the surgeons (for survival, or to maintain the same quality of life). This then caused a dependency on pharmaceutical remedies to keep the body from rejecting the augments. In short, it seemed to be a big finger pointer at the medical and pharmaceutical industries that don't cure things, just treat them for millions of dollars.

    The main thing I liked that was brought up about the conflict between machine heads and ludites was the idea that only the rich could truly afford them. If everyone with more money than you can suddenly make themselves just as smart or smarter than you how is anyone supposed to pull themselves up on their own. It replaces talent and merit with money and basically creates a physical distinction between people with money and people without it. There's a side quest that addresses it really well.

      Yahtzee's's mato is to be exceptionally harsh on games that aren't exceptional. If he rails on the thing, it's either very bad or a game that he found to be very boring (i.e. if you have similar tastes to him as far as games go, you probably won't enjoy the title. If your tastes differ, then it is either a good game in a genre he hates or a bad game overall), If you can't tell, he usually means the game is good enough that if you had an interest in it, it may be worth a second look. If he praises it, it means its a great game that fits him perfectly (i.e. if you like the game he does, you will love the game, and if you don't, you should do a little more digging to see if it fits you) . Hopefully this guide is useful....
      Also keep in mind this is more of a punditry show then a review show. It's suppose to be funny, entertaining, and overly harsh. Not necessarily a great buyers guide.

One big dungeon level with three final tasks to choose from. Pick one to finish and you get a 30 second cut scene with your chosen faction that tells a little about how they intend to go forward from there in rebuilding the world. That's it, and yet people have their nostalgia (myself included).

      I think people are trying to overthink the plot and comparing it too much to the original Deus Ex. The original developers for that game said they were excited for what Eidos Montreal had done with the Deus Ex series. Human augmentation is a very recent topic and you can see why it aligned with so many people's wavelengths, even if it didn't for others. I'm glad they took time to make a worthwhile game, even if claiming that "Oh the game is just better because it's older" is a mainstream thing amongst old school gamers. I like both the games equally as they had strengths in completely different areas and I'm still pretty hyped for MD.

Human Revolution is poorly writen not only compred to original game, but also in general (random bosses we don't know anything about, shitty ending choice and Adam's rant about environment, etc.). Haven't finished the game yet, and while I definitely agree with all the boss fight points (Even in the Director's Cut), I don't think I could say that Deus Ex one is significantly deeper that Human Revolution. On one hand, because I found Human Revolution a bit more nuanced than what he said (despite Yathzee being ok with augmentations (as I am), one look outside the window is enough to make me think "Yeah, some people are probably gonna yell on this one"). Plus, even if some upgrade are kinda useless, there are enough good ones to make experience points feel like rewards, and encourage you to explore, which is all one could ask for. On the other hand, I don't think Deus Ex one deserves a lot of praise for it's length or depth. Granted, it took me 50 hours to finish my first run, which is impressive, but if I had been given the director's cut, I would have went into it with a hacksaw and removed at least 10 hours. 10 hours of going through boring industrial buildings, basements or the catacombs of Paris. And it's not like your Dark Souls, where the awful catacombs levels are here to make Anor Londo or Irythill even cooler by comparison. It's just padding out. Also, while I don't remember character referencing philosophical concepts in the dialogues, I definitely remember the big bad guy yelling at you like a saturday morning cartoon villain during the final chapter. So in summary, while I recommand both games (however, I very strongly advise using the free fan made Revision mod for the original), I found Human Revolution better than expected and Deus Ex one not that great.

  • @mergenocide
    @mergenocide 11 років тому +16

    You're opinion on trans-humanism is really under-developed, people who have thing's like glasses, phones and watches don't augment themsleves, like, well augments, they don't make you fare inherently better than other people, glasses make you see just as well as regular people, phones help pass the time and comunictae quicker, and watches help you tell the exact time, and all those things are objects practically anyone can get, maybe not a high functioning smart phone but that isn't a trans-human implant. The augments that trans-humanists and pro-humanists talk about are permanent inorganic modifications to the human form in a effort and superiority. So not a fake leg fore someone whos lost theirs, but legs that allow you to jump from 100 feet without taking anydamage, not glasses that help you see like everyone else, but implanted ones that make you entrinsicly see beyond better, like through walls or something unnatural. Combine that with the fact that a surgical modification to your bodiy has all sorts of ethical ramifications, (as in the richer can afford better implants, making them not only monetarily better but physically, mentally and inherently as well, which will cause the rich-poor gap already existing in many countries to become even bigger, and huge class discrepancies is a leading cause of socieital collapse), how much would these things cost anyway? So much that again, only the richest can afford. Which the way the working classes are already treated currently can only end in disaster as stated prior, imagine walking into work after barely making it out of the recent slew of job and pay cuts but seeing you're boss walk in with new shining gold robo arms and imagine who infuriated an entire country would feel. Plus gangs who manage to gather large amounts of money could afford insane modifications. Do you wan't ultra-violent gang bangers busting through walls and mowing down anybody in site with built in machine guns? And what if they are super cheap, than everyone will walk around being the same, with the same exact capabilities, which reminds me of that elementary school tale of Harrison Bergeron. Flaws and strengths are what make the world go around, what make us human. There is a reason why this is a still constantly debated topic. Personally, I think the extent should be superficial things like phones or even things like google glass, having either wouldn't change much of anything, and that robotic help could be used as opposed to making us robots. My issue isn't you're position on the argument, but you're horrid reasoning, and then acting like it's such a simple decision.

      You're contradicting yourself and your grammar is horrible. You should think about augmenting your brain. Talk about horrid reasoning.

      Clint Webb Contradicting myself? Yeah, prove it idiot. It's easy to just say I'm contradicting myself without any proof, and like qan2211 said, yahtzee was the one making a quick, unfounded statement and I just over reacted. There is no contradiction, nice try though, and grammar? Seriously? That's something people who are lo\sing arguments hark on. Well nice try trying to bag on my grammar before the argument even begins, but my grammar is just fine. Please go elsewhere.

      @clint-webb 11 років тому +8

      Your grammar is far from fine, mate. I've seen my share of the internet and gradually you learn to hash out the dipshits. You're one of those. Debating you would be pointless and I made a mistake by reacting to you at all. Nothing good will come of this. I've nor the time nor the mood to point out every single flaw in that ridiculous text you wrote, not to mention your dumbass reply. Feel free to whine some more, I won't be responding again.

    • @mergenocide
      @mergenocide 11 років тому +3

      Clint Webb Oh how clever you must feel, again, you fail to even mention ONE major flaw in my grammar or my argument, and try to cover up that fact under the pretense of me being a dipshit. You're right though, nothing good would come of this, just your embarrassment and my frustration, please, don't respond to this anymore, if not for your sake.

    Funny that we now live in a world where an equally British sounding games analyst made a 3+ hour long video about this game. Around 40 minutes of which is dedicated to why the hacking minigame is actually bullshit.

    I think Yahtzee's view of the original Deus Ex is a little full of shit. Yes it had more options and more "depth"on paper and larger outdoor environments than DE:HR, but it is not WAY shorter, HR clocked in at around 25 hours with the majority of side quests while I finished the orginal deus ex on steam in 26 hours. An hour difference... Also, while he preaches about the depth of the original; the gameplay was stupidly unbalanced and borderline broken, favouring cheap tactics and exploitation of dog shit AI over any sort of complex tactic. I got through the majority of the original Deus Ex slashing everything with that laughably overpowered energy sword thing because the guns were so fucking poorly designed that they were next to useless even after leveling up your weapon abilities, and stealth was a complete mess missing all sorts of necessary information and feedback. DE:HR has fully functional, and actually enjoyable, gunplay, stealth and hacking, and encourages an interplay and experimentation with all of the gameplay styles; so while there are definitely less options, you are more likely to use them all, and they are all well executed enough to be worthwhile, which is not even close to true about DEUS EX, even if we're talking when it was released. I loved the first Deus Ex as much as anybody but lets be real and not just hipster, nostalgic british misanthropes who degrades everything that doesn't make him feel like he's in his 20's again, reliving the glory years of PC gaming. Only thing I really I agree on is that the boss fights are shit and the endings are weak, and even then; the Boss fights are even worse in the original, I got through almost all of those with cloak, energy sword, rinse & repeat. And the story in the original was a laughably poorly written joke, with even worse voice acting, by those standards HR is like Citizen Kane. Overall, I think DE:HR really captures the spirit and cyberpunk atmosphere of the original, and in a lot of ways actually outdoes it, especially in the story.

    I'd argue the cover mechanics enhance the stealth in Human Revolution. Why? Because it makes seeing where the enemy is while you are sneaking around in cover a lot easier without having to risk peeking over cover and getting spotted by a guard because they spotted a few strands of your hair from fifty feet away.

    true, but denton was also a special military agent, and even if he was only trained in small firearms, there was also room for improvement in each skill, to create a more personal experience for the player
    All i'm saying is that jensen could have to option to "master" a weapon of his choice, or a skill

    You could have his eyes include the HUD, not the glasses, with the display looking like it is moving whenever your eyes move relative to your skill. Surely with all this technology it would be possible to compute which direction Adam's eyes are moving relative to his head and alter the HUD appropriately. This would be how you could have contact lenses with a HUD. But yes, installing sun glasses into his face is probably easier. Plus he can do the CSI:Miami sunglasses move effortlessly.

    An early draft of Half-Life had Gordon cast as a weapon researcher, which makes a lot more sense that he'd be good with weapons than a guy trying to guess at atomic particles.

    I had the exact same problem in Deus Ex 1.
    "Oh, all you have is a stealth pistol, a police baton and a prod? Well, I hope you enjoy eating pasma!"
    I gotta say, I would always keep at least 4 LEMs in my inventory just because I feared I would meet a boss after turning the corner.

    It's not often I play a game where the first boss fight is harder than the final one. Honestly, your trapped in a large room with turrets on a rotating axis, and since your health regenerates you can just gun down the turrets then there's nothing to stop you from killing the boss. Well, apart from the occasional insane enemy, but its hard to feel challenged when your enemies are practically lemmings that stand still waiting for a complimentary shotgun blast to the rib cage.

    While I understand what you are saying with the ex-SWAT part, he did have quite a bit that could hinder his progress. I mean he did have both of his arms taken off and replaced with cybernetic prosthesis, which he would have to learn to use properly. Its said multiple times in the game that he recovered and was back to work much sooner than most people are, so I'll give em a bit of slack.
