I live in Tulsa, and I'm so glad you got to document Eastland / Eastgate. Should you be back around the Promenade Mall just closed... really sad story, the mall was on its last legs for a long time, and finally the owners said, "we're not paying for the upkeep anymore." It's abandoned, and most of us expect it to be destroyed by homeless and vandals in a matter of months. Sad, truly.

In the '80s and '90s, I lived East of Tulsa, so it just made sense for us to go to Eastland. Lots of great memories there, especially going to Service Merchandise, K-B Toys, eating at the Garfield's restaurant, and seeing movies at the theater next to the food court. Having a Target and Toys-R-Us across the street made it nice that we didn't have to drive all the way into Tulsa. Also, my grandfather-in-law was the construction foreman on the Dillard's there. Demographics have definitely changed in this area, which helped bring the mall down. Thank you for the video, and great aerials of the Tulsa skyline!

Having grown up in the 80s and for me, this mall was almost like a second home, the pictures at the end of the video brought back a lot of fond memories.
It was also sad starting in the 2000s with the closure of pennies seeing the mall and it’s rapid decline and eventual death. At one point I don’t remember the year my wife and I would go to the local Garfield‘s and eat maybe once a month and every time we went at least one of the stores closed. This happened until, you guessed it. Garfield’s closed for good.

This mall was so much a part of my family growing up as we were of it. My mom, grandpa, and uncle all worked there. My mom worked at JC Penny and Spencer's, my grandpa and uncle both worked at JC Penny. It was really the main mall I went to back in the day for The Pro Image sports shop and Waldenbooks. I went on my first date ever with my first girlfriend there. It was one of the greats.

Really amazing testament to a Tulsa Landmark that isn’t what it once was. I remember this mall opening in the early 80s and I can even remember Martin Mull being on commercials for its grand opening.
My senior year in high school (1990) a bunch of my friends went to a movie at the theater and many of my friends had their first date at this mall.

I moved to Tulsa in the early 90's and remember how busy this mall was. Crazy to think how popular malls were in comparison to today. Like you said, malls was the spot where you took your girl on a date, get a bite to eat, watch a movie, do some shopping and just hang out. Miss those days!..

It makes me so happy to see a dead mall get a second life and be reborn from it. One of my childhood malls in Anchorage, Alaska, the University Center Mall, is now mainly used as office space and classrooms for the University of Alaska after it pretty much died as a mall. There is really only one corridor left that's even mall like but, even that's pretty much dead as most of the shops with the exception for a travel agency, jewelry store, deli and a massage therapy center, have moved to either the more successful Dimond Center Mall and Anchorage 5th Ave. Mall. I wouldn't be surprised if the university buys and repurposes that corridor too within the next few years.

Finally a mall I know! Grew up going here as a kid/teen in the 90s. My family moved away in 2000. It was already dying back then, but my friends and I would just pick a mall to hang out for the day so it didn’t matter.

  • @SpiderWitch13

Grew up here in as a kid/teens in the 90s to the early 2000s. It was a great mall but in not so active part of Tulsa. There just wasn’t a lot going on. However, I do have fond memories in the late 90s to early 2000s when the mall was obviously approaching a dead zone and 2000 to 2004. The mall had some unusual stores. Like a martial arts weapons store, a new age store and a bootlegged dvd store. You should really check out promenade mall, there is a lot of interesting info on the back story.
You’re also find out that Tulsa likes carpeted malls for some reason 😂😂

I lived in Tulsa for about 30 years before moving back to San Diego and I remember this mall!!! I went there when I was in high school in marching band. We went after a competition. By that time though, the mall had already started to go downhill and that was I think in 1996. If you're ever in Tulsa again, check out the Promenade Mall on 41st and Yale. It's been slowly dying for as long as I can remember with the second level being if I remember correctly totally vacant. The ONLY mall that's really relevant there now is Woodland Hills Mall, and that's located just past 71st Street on Memorial Drive. More like 68th and Memorial. Man this mall though was literally out in the sticks lol. Great video. Everything about it was just so familiar to me and made me think about when i lived there.

I agree Hannah, I don't think Eastland was in a good location. I went there like maybe one or two times when it was a mall, the next time I went there was when they turned it into this commercial property and I think I renewed my Driver's license in there, that was several years ago now. Eastland has been a dead mall for a long time now. Malls dying makes me so sad. A lot of great memories at the malls, here in Tulsa and Dallas malls.

The area Eastland was around deteriorated over time during the 90’s, and traffic simply went elsewhere to Promenade and Woodland Hills. Even Promenade eventually dried up by the late 2000’s, with Woodland still thriving to this day. It’s not so much that Eastland was in the middle of nowhere as much as economic downturn in that area doomed the mall as it wasn’t worth the trip for most of the year

Glad you mentioned Eastland Mall's history regarding they started it and then never finished it I guess and then it officially opened decades later. I remember my Mom telling me about that. Eastland Mall is located in East Tulsa which is not the most happening part of Tulsa, that's why it struggled more than the other malls in Tulsa and this was before malls started dying. I have a great vintage photo of me 8x10 in 1983 modeling in a Woodland Hills Mall fashion show (Tulsa), it's a professional photo my Dad (pro photographer) shot. It's a cool shot because he captured a wide shot from the upper level and the fashion show was on the lower level. It showed hundreds of people watching the fashion show from the lower and upper levels and shows the stage in the middle. I love that mall fashion show photo my Dad shot and have so many great mall memories of Tulsa malls and Dallas and it's metroplex malls because I was a professional model for 15 years. Besides modeling in Paris, Milan, Tokyo, I modeled in lots of mall fashion shows, Dallas Galleria, Dallas Northpark Mall etc.

It looks like something you would see if the building was converted for any other function like a convention hall or a community college. And since the mall has been transitioning into a mixed commercial building with office spaces, it doesn't seem too out of wack for corridor carpeting to be there. That said, carpetting in the main atrium is a bit too much.

I worked at Eastgate Metroplex for a company who I won't mention and I won't mention my job position at the time. That mall, underneath it and on the top level of the mall are haunted. No one ever says a thing about it. Something lurks in that mall at night. I've seen it and I was terrified. Nothing happened to me or anything but I had multiple experiences at that mall at night working evening shift. That place is scary as heck at night. I never go to the below levels unless there is tornado type weather. Something about that place at night always gave me the creeps and I felt like I was being watched when no one else was around.

It is strange because it only happens at night but some nights were better than others. Some nights nothing happenes and then some nights there was things I couldn't explain that happened and I know if I explained it I'd sound crazy. I got used to those occurrences. It's a weird mall.. some of it looks like a regular mall, some of it reminds me of the halls of a convention center. So strange!! That fountain is beautiful though. I wish malls were still popular, I deeply cherish any malls that are left.

Promenade isn't a zombified corpse yet, it's still functional as a MALL, and it still looks like one.
This poor place has been bastardized into some corporate beige business center nightmarescape.

I met some people there for lunch at the Mexican restaurant in 2004. Was early and walked the mall. No traffic. Many vacated stores and mostly just kiosk businesses. Last gasp. Very sad.

I looked at chesterfield and there is a huge difference between a dead and a completely dead mall.you could hear a pin drop there.but the center is in such great shape and condition otherwise.

And it was a ghost town even then.

I am not always a fan of these mall redevelopments. They knocked this one out of the park. The best elements of the former mall like the tent roof and water fountain look just like they did in the old photos.

Eastland mall. Aka that place you go to every few years to renew your food handler's ID if you're unlucky enough to be stuck in food service.

I don't know how many more malls can be repurposed like this. Commercial real estate demand may take a hit soon

For years my family has been thinking about what it would be like for Promenade Mall, located not too far from this one, to be repurposed into living spaces. Stores turned into apartments.

what would really be interesting is to interview the people walking around the mall. why are they there? bored? unemployed? actually shopping? cool place to meet fellow gang members to plot and carry out crimes. Also interview employees of any stores still open to see how they feel about their job and life. Any channels doing this?

The highway killed it. In the 90s that area had a toys r us and Target right across the street and shopping and mile over . Now that area is honestly not a nice area at all

It's crazy to think that all the anchor stores except for Dillard's as far as I know are all out of business or as a 2020 in the process of going out of business. Marvin's is gone service merchandise is gone JCPenney is in the process of going out of business and I have no idea about Dillard's never heard of them only seeing a couple of their stores on UA-cam.
