I feel so sorry for singers (so potentially my future self too haha) because essentially every aspect of life affects the voice, and you're way more likely to lose your range, dexterity, skill and control than instrumentalists because of the sheet amount of factors involved - like Zeppelin changing because Robert Plant got his vocal cords scarred from food poisoning symptoms. This is subjective but James seems to have maintained SO much of his young voice's capabilities while actually sounding more consistent and interesting as the years go on - when I found DT I ignored him to get at the crazy instrument work, and by BC&SL I was really let down by the music but DAMN was James singing like an absolute king!
@@davidmichaelsen9805 Though they're not tenors, and not singing in a band like DT where you really have to sing quite extremely most of the time. James' voice is naturaly fragile in comparison to someone like Bruce Dickinson. He still somehow manages to carry on
This man is a highly skilled singer been doing it for over 30 years ...singing this song without accompaniment ls no easy task ...kudos James the voice of dream theater 🤘🏻
The best could have been if he never had his vocal injury and Dream Theater weren't touring too much. I mean, SFAM tour in 2000 destroyed his voice, you can notice a transition in his voice before and after that tour.
@@SextacyFTW Absolutely, as an amateur singer myself, it touches me deeply when great singers can no longer be what they once were. I feel empathy because the future awaits me as well. My comment is in no way an attack on James.
Way different in the house on the phone than live. I love James but I don't think he'd perform this live, this well. Maybe the first couple of shows but as mentioned, is much slower. No way he sustains the time and ability to hit those notes throughout the tour. It's unfortunate but your voice degrades over time. Doesn't mean they can't put on a bad ass show
Really? I can't understand a single word he's saying on Awake. It's my least favorite DT album because I can't stand his vocals. It's one of my favorite things about the community of DT fans though, the opinions are so diverse.
Patrucci has swapped his guitars hundreds of times , myung the same , the drums wear out so get new ones ! Labrie though has to fight the effects of age , and a lifetime of singing in an octave most couldn’t touch . Most dream theatre songs are brutal on the vocal chords . James labrie has done the band proud over the years .
This is what you get when you’re not backlined by amps and drums in a theater full of screaming people…also, it’s the second set of the night and you’ve been touring for 6 months. People give James way too much shit. Dude legitimately has one of the most difficult gigs in all of rock and roll…especially when you consider his age and the number of years he’s been at it.
Love James but these days are over, he must not sing these songs anymore, not without backing vocals at least. He must concentrate on keeping his voice and sing an octave lower. I really hope that high pitching on the new albums is gone because of the heavy touring, his voice will decline because of that. Last concert in 2020 in Amsterdam people even left the concert because it was crinching to hear him sing way off pitch . I think DT must work with real life backing vocals , female and male to take over the difficult parts , i think it will be a great asset to the show , every fan will accept this. TOTO also started to perform with extra backing vocals in the late 90's and it sounded awesome .
sounds gr8! looks like he just rolled out of bed and doing some warm up stuff. seen them a couple times last tour. i can assure you from what i herd hes money. people get all fired up because there so use to listening to polished recordings . his voice has changed and matured as any singer doing what they did for 30 something years. if people left a show in Amsterdam its probly because it was past there bed times... lol
He still has it, but sadly not in tour trim anymore. I've seen them five times now and it has been from reasonably well to at times horrible. On the latest gig he totally butchered 6:00 and Pull Me Under. The thing is, why don't they downtune half or full step down? Songs would still be awesome and James could take it much easier.
So what exactly is the issue then (I'm not a singer so I don't know what goes into vocal preparation or upkeep). He's barely lost any of his range so why are his live performances so inconsistent? Is it the frequency that a tour demands? Is it the tempo? Does singing fast get harder with age? He is singing this noticeably slower and a bit breathy but the notes are all there. It would be silly to expect him to sound exactly like he did in 1992, and I don't. Not hating on the guy, just honestly curious.
When you are on a stage backed by a powerful band in front of thousands people you can't just sing like here, you can't just say to the mixer man "hey raise that volume" you must push a lot. And that's the hardest when you get old. The powerful singing style of metal and subgenres is really difficult to maintain over the years, in particular if all your singing was so high placed.
He's usually in tours, and his condition can vary a lot, especially because age I presume. It's not like deciding to sing at your house. DT's extremely instrumental band, you have to keep up, conditions are difficult, and he's to sing for two hours or so. He used to sing for 3 hours at some concerts. And his range is obviously not gone much, but the power of his voice is definetly not there anymore. He shifted his vocal technique throughout his career to adapt the situation. In early concerts, you can see he uses quite less amount of head voices, his technique is quite different in Live at Budokan than Score even.
@@subutaynoyan5372 Yeah he sounds amazing in pretty much any live recording from the 90's. I think Score was the first live album where they enhanced his vocals in post. First time I heard it I remember thinking he sounded almost too perfect, and that was why. If they started enhancing his voice in real time at shows I'd honestly be fine with that.
He’s such an enigma with his inconsistency on tour. I think the issue may be foldback, when I watch him on stage, nothing he does in a show makes me think he can hear himself or the band well. I wonder if he would consider crossing over to in ear monitors.
Are you transgender dude? I love the images and words album. Your mean stuff sucks. Images and words is one of the best albums ever by anyone. I love you. May God bless you.

imagine if he never had his vocal injury
I assume he still gonna be a little bit slower because of age, since his vocal technique is slowly damaging his vocal cord.
I think about that a lot, he’s still so good at his age and after that injury, I can’t imagine if he hadn’t injured is voice.
