Inflation data shows 'meaningful step down' in line with Fed expectations: Strategist

  • Treasury yields (^TYX, ^TNX, ^FVX) are on the decline this morning after inflation data from the PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures) Index came in line with expectations with April's core PCE rising 0.2% month-over-month and 2.8% year-over-year. As inflation slows but price pressures remain a big risk, what does this print mean for the bond market?
    JPMorgan US CIO for Fixed Income, Currencies, and Commodities Kay Herr sits down in-studio with Yahoo Finance's Catalysts to look deeper into April's inflation data and what this means for the Federal Reserve's inflation rate target.
    "If you look underneath in some of the details, if you look on a three-month annualized basis, we've gone from a 4.4% number in March down to 3.46% in April. That's a pretty meaningful step down," Herr explains. "If you look on a month-over-month [basis], in April that was running 0.33%, March we're running 0.249%. And then on an average monthly basis in the first quarter, things were at about 0.36%, for April [it's] 0.25%. So a reasonable step down moving in line with what the Fed thinks."
    Herr underlines the Fed's dual mandate objective in regulators' decision on cutting interest rates or holding them higher for longer: "We're going to start to see a little bit of softness in in the labor market. And that's going to lead the Fed... to move toward cutting rates, yes."

    High inflation is followed by uncertainty and panic, making me wonder if it's time to liquidate my $200k portfolio, or maybe consider some defensive investments. I've heard analysts emphasize on value stocks performing good, what stocks exactly can be the ultimate hedge?

    News Alert! Inflation hasn't just started to affect us. People have been suffering greatly from inflation for almost a century, but notably after 1971. During the industrial revolution, prices of products and services were auctioned down to the point that consumers could literally buy them for as little as a penny thanks to a free market and sound money. All of the problems we have today are a result of government meddling.

      It has never been easier to understand how to build your money than it is right now, when you may study and experience a completely variegated market passively by employing a successful portfolio-advisor. The impacts of the U.S. dollar's gain or fall on investments, in my opinion, are complex.

      I think it's great to use a portfolio advisor when investing. Before I met with a certified portfolio advisor during the pandemic crash in March 2020, I had recently started having terrible dreams. Finally, with the help of my advisor, I was able to increase my initial investment of $400k to over $2.8 million dollars.

    First-time home ownership is OVER. "Starter home" mortgages in Tennessee are $3500/month.
    We've put in 77 bids in middle TN on first home and were outbid by cash investors EVERY TIME. Now, we're priced out due to price and mortgage rates.
    Wonder why Millenials and Gen Z are doom spending? Not getting married? Not starting families? Why is civil unrest growing while the wealth gap is larger than it ever has been in history?
    It's because this economy is not for us, it never has been since we've been around. It priced us out and left us behind before we got here. This doesn't end well for society at every socioeconomic level..

    For inflation to hit the Fed's 2.6 plan, monthly rates would need to be .15 or better every month the rest of the year, which we haven't done at all in 2 years

      Try 23 percent a year. I used the western asset inflation linked index and the m2 supply to draw corrolations and define variables. The fund is extremely close to inflation 1-1.0625. Over a 2 year period the swing high of the fund price was 14.78 and the swing low was 8.32. Do the subtraction and you get 6.46. CPI for 2 years was 3.4 plus 3.4 equaling 6.8. 6.8-6.46 equals .34. Using the price measuring percentage on trading view, the draw down from swing high to swing low was 6.46x 1.0625 equals 6.86 very close to the given CPI. The percent draw down from 14.78-8.32 was around 43 percent. Multiply that by 1.0625 and you get around a 46 percent increase over 2 years. I ran these numbers through the chat gpt paid version using an Econ Ai and i was impressed that i had figured this out only being a cook, but a very thirsty for knowledge one at that and an even faster learner. Investing outside the dollar in emerging markets, India, for example, and then some hedging with gold and gold backed stable coins for quicker settlment times, no mark up or storage fees becsause i do own the underlying asset as well, 1k in silver, the best i could do in a short time, 20 k in crypto mostly accumulated during the bear market, making meals that are costed down to 3.50 a piece. Paid credit card debt off. Once i saw the monely supply contraction was the lowest since the great depression, then all the layoffs started, then the marking down of goods, cars homes, etc. pretty clear picturing being painted. I still believe we can survive this but it needs to be in a smart, strategic manner. I hate all of us getting fucked over, it keeps me up at night seeing the faces of people i know potentially getting screwed by those who have no soul, ethics, moral values, etc.

    • @drscopeify
      @drscopeify Місяць тому

      @@shaheedlinzag3436 Every time we had a rate hike cycle the FED had to run and cut becasue the economy started to fall apart like 2000 and 2008 but we did have a start to a normal cycle in 2017 when Powell himself hiked to 2.5% by end of 2018 and he started to cut rates in 2019 slowly until COVID happened and then he cut to 0% of course but until that he began to cut without the economy falling apart for the first time since the 1960s we had a normal cycle with no disasters. I just hope that Powell can pull it off for a second time, if he does I hope people respect his work, I am sure he is right now, at the minute looking over data and wanting BADLY to cut rates right now, at this very minute but he has to see inflation come down so it's a very tense time for the FED and Powell which is why he is so quiet, you don't see Powell at all now, he basically disappeared except for some conference event. He tried to get cuts started at the end of 2023 but then inflation went up again, the lack of houses for sale is the problem as housing is like 40% or whatever of PCE number. Anyway, we will wait and see, I think FED is DYING to cut but their hands are tied for now, sending out KASHKARI to scare everyone but we shall see.... The FED is on our side, they want inflation down and to cut rates fast to prevent disaster, that's what we all want.

    I have friends and family that works at Big box retailers. They agree that store sales are Way down since October 2024. Half the customers are using food stamps, paying part cash, the balance paid with credit debit cards. Also customers are buying the least that they can on everything. It seems the compulsive shopping and binge buying is over.

    How come not one of these "Finance" channels of any format in the entire nation ever mentions the ONLY effective system that there has ever been when it comes to dealing with inflation which was the Office of Price Administration (OPA) system of price controls? The OPA system of price controls was very effectively used during and immediately after WW2 in order to deal with the root cause for inflation, which is usually, but not always, but is usually the greed/avarice of corporate America. However, despite the success of the OPA system of price controls when it came to being able to tamp down the corporate greed/avarice of that era, it was still done away with by that era's corrupt, incompetent Congress over the objections of President Truman. It's like some things never change?

If this dismantling does not take place this virtual enslavement of the masses will only get more severe which will eventually result in the overthrow of the entire system along with a lot of bloodshed.

    The Federal Reserve’s higher interest rate is increasing inflation, not reducing inflation. A major cost to business is interest on borrowed money. The Federal Reserve’s higher interest rates increase business cost which gets passed on to customers by increasing prices
    The Federal Reserve lives and breathes finance and knows higher interest rates drive inflation. They won’t tell the real reason they jacked up interest rates.

      Higher rates slow the economy hence drops inflation.

      @@rack9458 all kinds of disasters slow the economy by dropping both supply and demand. When companies are forced out of business because high interest rates, the supply drops. Higher interest rates also drop demand but the supply/demand curve dictates prices and therefore dictates inflation. If the intent was to drop inflation, then monopolies would be broken up to allow competition and thereby lower inflation. During the Covid lockdowns & disruptions gouging was commonplace. Lumber mills colluded to keep availability scarce and lumber prices skyrocketed several hundred percent. Eggs too. There is no denying high interest rates force companies to raise their prices in order to pass on the cost of doing business.

    • @douginorlando6260
      @douginorlando6260 Місяць тому

      It’s very straightforward; higher business costs result in higher inflation. Cost of servicing debt is typically larger than net profit. When interest rates doubled, that more than wiped out all the profit for many companies and they raised prices to mitigate the impact and stay viable. Higher interest rates led directly to higher prices which is the definition of inflation.

      @@douginorlando6260 So if higher rates cause inflation, why does the Fed raise rates to decrease inflation?
