Goodbye Southlands

  • In the 70's when I went to secondary (senior) school there were three schools on the Ormesby Road site, Langbaurgh, Springfield and Southlands. As the years passed Langbaurgh was demolished and Southlands and Springfield were amalgamated to become Keldholme. More years later Keldoholme was closed and Unity City Academy was built and the old Springfield school was demolished.
This left the old Southlands building standing which was turned into the Southlands Centre. a community hub, sports centre and home for small start-up businesses allowing them to take advantage of a low rent and shared overheads. On November 10th 2018 the Southlands Centre closed as it was sold off by the council to be demolished and the site and sports fields turned into housing.
Thanks to the hard work of some marvellous volunteers Southlands was opened to allow people to look around for one last time. I went back for the first time in 43 years to make this video for myself and hopefully other ex-pupils who were unable to attend this open day.
The music used in this video is Long way to go - Miguel Johnson and can be found here:-

I was one of the first year pupils to attend after the building was completed. After Years away I recently visited my old haunts, sadly Southlands had been demolished . This is the visit I would have wished to make , thank you .

I enjoyed watching that a i went to Southlands School, it brought back some good memories. Its sad to think that its not going to be there any more, not only by me but also the people using the sports and other facilities and people who had established businesses there. I left Southlands in 1977 when i was 16 years old. Thanks for sharing :-)

You're most welcome Carl, there is supposed to be a new community centre being build but will be a much smaller building which obviously won't offer the facilities if the old school and sports hall. I left Southlands in 1975 and will also be sad when it is gone.

@@alanchapman6886, when I started on 1970 I was in Constantine house and only Mr Taylor was there then. The headmaster was Mr White, deputy head was Mrs Whitehead (who you might've known as Miss Jenny). Mr Headly taught maths. Mr Whitehead taiught woodwork. There is a Facebook group called

It is Martin considering it's going to cost a lot more to demolish the building and build a new community hub than it would to renovate the original building.

I know it's stupid what they are doing. They knocked clarville down and built the sports village to replace it. Knocked the odean down and built a cineworld to replace that one too. Even linthorpe road and north ormesby market aren't the places they once were.

Does Middlesbrough have any Secondary Schools left?
My extended family went to Blackenhoe Technical School then becoming Bertram Ramsey, later to Middlesbrough High School all on the Prissick(sp) Estate, Marton Road. Now ALL GONE. Sisters and one brother to Southlands and Cousins to Lanbaurgh and Springfield Schools all gone.
The demolition of the High School, Brookside and Bertram Ramsey is interesting as the land was given to the council for the use of education and pleasure. However I understand that housing has sprung up. That may be in breach of the covenant attached to the land and so the land would not be the councils to have sold for housing.
Those that still live in the area may be able to correct me but it is the same donation that provided Stewarts Park.

The school closures came about due to the predicted lower population growth, unfortunately the figures were wrong and now we actually have a shortage of school places.

Do they do Home Economics and Needlework any more? We used to call it Domestic Science in the 60s. Instead of gyms, they should focus more on the Three R's, people can't spell any more.

My youngest left school about 10 years ago and I'm sure that she never had the option of Home Economics and my lads never had options to do woodwork or metalwork. Everything seemed based on I.T. and computers.
