Alien 3 rocks, especially the Assembly Cut, I'm glad a filmmaker like Nolan appreciates it

Still sucks. Just besides alien resurrection. But slightly better than that. The first two were masterpiece cinema in making. I don't blame David fincher for making alien 3. It was a disaster because a lot of studios were interfering.

It's a great movie, I agree... just not a great sequel, or how anyone would imagine the sequel to Aliens to be. If it was a stand alone Alien film it would be great.. but killing off Newt, and Hicks, and not evolving/expanding on what James Cameron did with Aliens was a massive mistake, taking it back to 1 alien, with Ripley, and a bunch of guys figuring out to kill the single creature is a bad move cause it feels like they basically said Camerons Aliens sucks, were killing that off, ruining that ending for anyone who loved it, and going back to what Ridley Scott did, just different, but still using Ripley lol. Just feels like lazy/bad writing, and de-evolution of where the franchise was successfully heading.. but again I enjoy it as a what if film, just not canon imo.

Two of my favorite directors now is Chris and David Fincher. Good to see Chris respects Fincher and, I'm sure, Fincher feels the same. They have are both magnificent.

Such a fantastic pick, probably one of the best original trailers. Even as a kid born in the 2000s, i ran into this trailer on youtube and it scared the hell out of me, its so great how vivid trailers like that can be.

For me, I think the trailer for Interstellar was amazing because it didn't tell you anything about the movie, I saw that trailer, and I had absolutely no idea what the movie was about, which I thought was amazing because then I saw that masterpiece and was so happy that the trailer didn't give anything away!

Alien 3 just gets better the older I get. It makes sense Nolan would like it though. It's a downer, sure, but it ends on a triumphant note. Sort of like The Dark Knight in a way.

@@jamessunderland7435 I respect your opinion but you're acting as if they couldn't have been deepened, and fleshed out as characters since they were "one dimensional" in Aliens..
Which of the characters in Alien 3 that replaced them were so much better character wise? Funny how no one seems to remember any of them. Doesn't seem like it was worth it to replace these poorly written, overrated, "one dimensional characters" you speak of lol. (Which are the fan faves of the Alien Franchise behind Ripley).
You don't kill off fan faves off screen before the sequel, you deepen their characters in the sequel, and kill them off IN THE FILM if need be. That was an absolutely Horrible writing choice imo.

Only problem with Alien 3 is it came after Aliens. If it had been after Alien it would have had better reception. I was disappointed seeing it in 1992. Having rewatched it recently I thought it was very good. I understand the movie is meant to be. Its meant to dark and depressing because the Alien has ruined Ripleys life. Yet she was brave enough to make sure it the Alien never got brought to earth. She didn’t have to go with the marines in Aliens and she could have allowed them to remove the queen inside of her in Alien 3 but she chose to sacrifice herself instead to make sure the Alien died as well. In the Alien 3 special edition when Ripley falls to her death they don’t show the Alien popping out of her chest. I couldn’t figure out why because I thought the way she grabbed it so it couldn’t jump away was one last heroic act by Ripley. Now I understand why they took that out and it’s because it shows Ripley still had time to allow the Dr’s to remove it. That makes her sacrifice even more heroic because in the original she was gonna die regardless because they wouldn’t have had time to take it out her body.
The first 2 are absolute classics and the 3rd one isn’t as good but it’s a fitting end to the trilogy. In regards to Alien Resurrection I think its an ok movie but it’s not the same Ripley from first 3 movies.

Honestly ive also been seeing some reappraisal for Alien: Resurrection that makes me appreciate that film more in retrospective. Watch the video by coldcrashpictures, in hindsight I love the Alien franchise quite a lot becuz every film took a risk, a genuine big risk, not many franchises have this, most devolve into direct-to-video cheap marketing bs. But all of these films had a unique talented well-known artistic director, who portrayed their vision with competent production teams. Even Prometheus, and Alien: Covenant, however shit u might think them, they have unique ideas, unique looks to them, every film in this franchise u can hate but you can’t take away that they took creative risks,

@@GuineaPigEveryday resurrection isnt bad at all. It has some of the best horror elements with that scene of all the ripley lab experiments. Though id argue that 2, and covenant didnt take a whole lotta risk. Covenant seems like a backtrack from the risk scott was taking with prometheus. No one appreciated prometheus at the time, so they just threw out the concept of tracking down mankinds creators in favor of action shlock like 2. I was really disappointed that we never got to know why the blue dudes turned on mankind, or more about them in general. The only ones that are straight bad are the AVPs.

My personal thought is with the sole exception of Alien Covenant, every Alien film has had something substantial of value to explore cinematically or thematically.
Alien was all about surviving against something that was pure destruction brought upon by corporate researchers going too far.
Aliens was a Post-Vietnam style story of PTSD and moving forwards, finding peace and allowing the lone survivor to reclaim their lost family.
Alien 3 then is the antithesis of Aliens, the reality in which there is no escape. It's one of the most blatantly nihilistic Hollywood films ever made, and there is something to admire about that.
Alien Resurrection by contrast doesn't really have many deep themes. The script by Joss Whedon is about as deep as a puddle. Beyond the implied romance between Ripley and Call and the over-done motherhood motif with the baby Alien (Something Aliens handled with more care), it's not thematically very interesting. But cinematically? I kind of adore it. If Alien 3 was hardcore cinematic realism, Resurrection is over-the-top cinematic style. I can almost try to see Resurrection as Weyland Propaganda in the Alien universe it's so over-stylized. It's ironic that Whedon tried to scapegoat the director when everything good about this film came from the director. Not Whedon.
And then there's Prometheus. I LOVE Prometheus. I think it's an exceptional film that addresses a lot of themes of creation, humanity, and how we separate both from monsters and machine. It's why I hate Covenant so much, that film felt like a forced studio apology to the crybabies who thought Prometheus was too different or "artsy" to be an Alien film (Nevermind that Alien ALWAYS had artsy themes...). Though even then, brief moments of Covenant do dwell back into that kind of motif. Alas, we never truly got Prometheus 2.
