This vintage documentary film - originally titled as "Korea Today" - is an episode of the U.S. Army's "The Big Picture" television series about the reconstruction of South Korea following the historical event known as the Korean Conflict or Korean War (1950-53). It was released in circa 1960.
The film documents the activities of the U.S. Army helping the South Koreans to rebuild their country from the ashes in the second half of the 1950s. Housing, public buildings, businesses and transportation facilities have been patched together or constructed from scratch. American Army know-how, Army supervision, and Army equipment have played a vital role in this rehabilitation, working closely with the Korean people. Just as important has been the creation of a new Republic of Korea Army (ROKA or ROK Army). For South Korea's defense, thousands of inexperienced young men have been trained by American and Korean veterans and turned into a smooth, well-drilled modern army, equipped with American arms.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea (Korean: 대한민국), is a country in East Asia, constituting the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. It shares land borders with North Korea (officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) to the north, and oversea borders with China to the west and Japan to the east. The capital and largest city is Seoul, with a population of 10 million.
At the end of WW2, Korea was divided into Soviet and U.S. zones of occupation. An election was held in the U.S. zone in 1948 which led to the creation of the Republic of Korea. Although the United Nations passed a resolution declaring the Republic to be the only lawful government in Korea, the Soviets set up a rival government in the North.
The Korean Conflict began in 1950 when forces from the North invaded the South. The fighting lasted three years and involved the United States, China, the Soviet Union, and several other nations. The 1953 armistice, never signed by South Korea, split the peninsula along the demilitarized zone near the original demarcation line (no peace treaty was ever signed). The border between the two nations remains the most heavily fortified in the world.
Between 1962 and 1994, the South Korean economy grew significantly at an average of 10% annually, fueled by annual export growth of 20%, in a period called the Miracle on the Han River. During this period, South Korea transformed from a developing country into a G-20 major economy.
Today, South Korea is a developed country with the second highest standard of living in Asia. It is Asia's fourth largest economy and the world's 15th (nominal) or 12th (purchasing power parity) largest economy. The economy is export-driven, with production focusing on electronics, automobiles, ships, machinery, petrochemicals and robotics. South Korea is a member of the United Nations, Uniting for Consensus, G20, WTO, and OECD, and a founding member of APEC and the East Asia Summit.

South Korea went from being a poor country that had a hard quality of life to a superpower whose culture has become a worldwide topic! I used to learn about this war in 9th grade and I always wanted to see what Korea looks like now and ever since I've been obsessed with Korea!
Me too😊🇧🇷💞🇰🇷
ikr. Its wild learning abt the Korean war in school, and realizing its the same korea today.
Samsung is the largest foreign investor in the US. While TSMC making billions from the US, they didn't invest $1 into the US until they caused chip shortage by sending their shipment to China and Japan first using Chinese middleman. While Samsung invested tens of billions building chip factory in Austin, Texas since 1996 with hiring 20,000 employees in the US.
TSMC is only in America right now because because if China ever invades Taiwan, the government and anything that needed the security, would be stuck being reliant on intel fabs.
I dont think they intentionally caused the shortage, lets be real here.
It takes months to fully shut down and restart factories.
Its not uncommon for these factories to literally be creating materials and sending em straight to the trash after production, just because of how hard it is to change up the system.
proud korea
Colonization, war, IMF... There were many hard times, but
I can't believe I grew up like that.
Korea is the only country in the world to upgrade from a developing country to a developed country for the first time in the world. A lot has happened in Korea over the past 60 years. Japan's collapse, IMF, national disaster, and then overcame them all. Now, in the world's poorest country, in 2022, it beat Japan's great power, and now ranks fifth in the world's GDP.
The ranking of the world's GDP you wrote is wrong. The world 'sGDP in 2022, Japan 3rd and South Korea 12th. It's the same in 2023. In 2024, Japan is 4th and South Korea is 13th.
Fascinating stuff.
Thank you very much for posting this video., I really love watching the entire “Big Picture” series, too bad the US Army still doesn’t produce them today.

Why English language is not studied in your basic education system?
@@goldroger7180 it is major foreign language in society and one of 2nd languages in school. it is in basic education system. students learn it as a fixed course after entering middle school.

The Philippines, Korea and Japan are the Golden trifecta of great Asian Allies to the US. Thank you for your resistance and willingness to stand up to this tyranny called Communism/ Socialism. Other nations did not resist so fiercely, and ended up with civil- war like in Vietnam. Long- Live ROK.
why does one of the men behind the representative of Russia looks asleep. The man actually is playing like he is asleep.
Whew! They had their work cut out for them! Bravo!
Thank god....Rok never have a bad dictator like in South Vietnam....then all Korea was DPRK....
to be frank the early leaders of rok were dictators and had to be thrown out after ruling for few decades.
also they were mostly from the military. democracy started about 2000.
4:15 - Do not forget that China fought for the DPRK.
Also USSR Russian Stalinist Advisors.
Its hilarious how China really tried to make a propaganda film about it, where they sent 100k soldiers to fight a small compliment of like 1k marines who were starved and almost depleted their ammo.
Its sad how the US fought a war in Vietnam because they thought it would become a Chinese satellite state, only for Ho Chih Minh to fight the Chinese 100x harder than they fought the US.
Most goofiest geopolitical blunder in history.
and fcking china said that sk should thank china, without them we wouldn't be divided

ummmmm is this early hippie hackysack???
It was a real shame the American Soldier and Marine were forced to fight the Korean War equipped with an obsolete rifle and the antique BAR instead of an assault rifle and belt fed all purpose machine gun. Both were already available and both had extensive combat credentials.
The us in the Korean War had flaws. For starts the army sent there was not battle hearten troops from ww2. There was some but most troops were inexperienced who fought in Korea. Troops also were screwed by being given old equipment from ww2 and not state of the art equipment. Literally a tank was pulled from a museum to be sent to Korea. Leadership was good but for MacArthur his flaw was miscalculating chinas intervention into the war. Had he sent his troops on the border on alert of a Chinese attack then the Chinese offensive would’ve been less effective but instead they were oblivious to a Chinese against battle hearten Chinese civil war soldiers. The nuke China thing led to a divide in leadership also. Oddly enough China’s intervention led to us being over cautious in Vietnam and morale in Vietnam was low cause they weren’t allowed to attack north
After WW2, development of newer weapons was delayed in the US. This also resulted in the Tank panic, and also the use of outdated equipments like you mentioned
Sounds like something the democrats would do, in those days.
@@danduarte7010 And today as well.
My unit had old WW2 m-26,s n they kicked the NKA t-26 Russian made tanks ever time, remember NKA / Chinese army was also equipped with surplus soviet-made equipment from world war 2.

That's right, American taxpayers rebuilt SK just like we rebuilt every other country we've beaten or protected. But do you think ANY other nation would fund our rebuilding? Hardly! At the most they'd stand afar off and shake their heads saying, Shame.

Not really, btw S.korea was poorer than many african nation after war but they managed to recover and grow so fast in part thanks to US by providing support, tools and education but also due to their own hardwork and capabilities while other nations end up blaming colonialism etc for their own shortcomings while they get so much support, foriegn aid, tools and education and all too.
