      ...It's a good thing she took those braids out when she did, in this case. Just don't ever use edge control with extensions again, Jess. 😨

    Tip: de-tangle the individual braided hair as your taking them out. This way when it’s all down you don’t have 1 big monster to de-tangle

  • @karaa.2504
    @karaa.2504 5 років тому +160

    Just future reference Edge control is not made to braid or twist hair. Conditioning Gels ie: Shin n Jam, are made for braiding and twisting. They help keep your hair from getting too frizzy while styled and give a nice finish and they don’t dehydrate your hair.

      It also takes practice to do braids neatly. I have natural hair and don't put product like that when getting it braided. It's just washed conditioned oiled and stretched

    • @ladyd8028
      @ladyd8028 4 роки тому +1

      Back in the day when I wore extensions, 1989 -1994, I only used Kemi Oil for two- to three-month stretches of maintenance. With about as much hair loss/shedding and no gooey residue.

      Me too! Well 2 months the max for me. I love getting a break from handling my natural hair, in addition I give it time to grow due to less manipulation. I have my mom help me unravel the braid-ins and detangle my natural hair after because she’s more gentle than me. Last but not least braided protective hairstyles over here are a bit pricey so I’m normally not in any rush to take them out.🤷🏽‍♀️

    We lose 100 strands of hair a day
    7 days in a week × 2 14 days x 100 is 1,400 I think the shedding was pretty normal. I know how you feel try green tea rinses before protective styles

    I learned this lesson after doing these twists as well. If you use anything that’s sticky, it will kinda “loc” your hair. The best thing ive ever used was the AG texture gloss. When you take your hair down, the sticky gel feeling is not there it just feels smooth and moisturized. It’s expensive but worth it!

  • @kenn546
    @kenn546 5 років тому +84

    After you cut the twists that was cute. You should do the short ones next time. Also(now this is extra work) when I take down my poetic justice braids I detangle each braid individually with acv and a fine tooth comb

    Protective styles can also damage the hair despite popular belief of only having benefits as the extensions weigh the hair down and put tension on the hair, (more than the hair can handle) resulting in hair loss.

    I've learned that when taking down braids I have to detangle as I go along one by one! I comb out each one after I take it out and make sure to loosen all the build up at the roots. Anytime I try to detangle after I've taken them all down it's a nightmare! Once I had to cut out parts of my hair! Never again lol I hope this helps!

    Story of my freaking life!! Not detangling* my hair after taking out a protective style that I'd had for about 2mos.
    Simple takedown, thought the style was cute & didn't look dirty so I figured I'd rock it for a day. Hopped in the shower & accidentally got it wet, figured oh well, might as well just wash it now. #Fail I had a HORRIFIC, MATTED MESS on my head. Hrs & hrs of NO success. I cried, freaked out & punched a hole in the wall. (Yikes!) Called my friend to buy me a fresh pair of hair scissors and chop chop. 3yrs LATER... head full & thick like yours! 💞

    • @jaclyns1121

      AppleBomb For a minute there I thought I wrote this! I had the same thing happen years ago. Called my hairstylist crying my eyes out. She said come in right away. Then she said We can either sit here for the next three plus hours trying to get thru this matted hair or cut it all off.

    • @randilockett6435
      @randilockett6435 4 роки тому

      Same exact thing happened to me, sans the hole in the wall. I obviously didnt know how to treat my hair post protective style. Let me tell you, I LEARNED THAT DAY!! It was the start of my natural hair/learning my hair process. So was really a blessing in a nightmare disguise

    Be careful of the rice water rinse. I used it once a week for a month and my hair started falling out like crazy. I found out I had protein overload which caused my hair to feel like straw, break easy and it was coming out in handfuls on wash day. Since then I check all the products I use. While doing the rice water rinse the other products I used also had protein in them so now I only use 1 product that has protein until it’s under control.

    • @sassys1240
      @sassys1240 5 років тому +1

      If you're low porosity be careful with the rice water. It contains 16% protein.

    • @desquonialilly5020
      @desquonialilly5020 5 років тому

      Shalana A Smith I’m high porosity but that all changed when I bleached my hair which I didn’t kno it was gonna do that. I had never had an issue b4 with bleaching my hair but then again I wasn’t doing the natural thing either. There’s so many different combinations that can totally throw u off. I’m now waiting on the bleached parts to grow out bcuz I’m not cutting off my hair 😂 it took me too long to get here.

    • @leospicegirl
      @leospicegirl 5 років тому +1

      Desquonia Lilly if i use rice water and my hair isn’t falling out then i don’t have protein overload? i am low porosity and i use it every 2 weeks

    • @desquonialilly5020
      @desquonialilly5020 5 років тому

      heaven I would just be careful everyone’s hair isn’t the same but just check the products that u use so ur not overdoing it with protein.

  • @ZairayCash

    Heyy Babygurl, your final result was beautiful! NEVER apologize for being upset. Nobody with sense expected you to be happy go lucky about all the EXTRA hair you loss. None of us would be either and I just went through the same for SEVERAL wash days due to protein deficient High Porosity Hair. It's hard to see that much hair go down "the drain". You'll bounce back though!

    My opinion after a protective style like braids you will lose a lot of hair.... we lose hair everyday and not doing anything to it for two weeks yeah that was a good amount of hair you lost.... what i usually do to my daughters hair is while braided i make sure she oil her scalp 2x a week.. then when when taken it out finger Detangle don’t use a comb at all... and try a shampoo and conditioner for detangling... it works and help less shedding.... But you good with the amount that came out... loved the end of ur twisted out...

    I don't think the hair lose was a lot. You gotta remember its 2 weeks worth of shedding and you shed, average, 100 strands a day. You're hair is just thick so it looks like more. But maybe next you should try a twist and lock gel. African pride had a black castor oil one that has a similar texture to edge control but it won't leave your hair feeling dry and sticky.

    I'd recommend using jam next time. The hold is softer, but that also means that there won't be as much tangling. 😊

    I used to use Botanicals anti-breakage braid release spray to avoid losing a lot of hair while removing my braids. It worked for me.

    So I found a product that I think u should try 2 detangle your hair, I used it after crochet braids for a month. I just damped my hair and literally a quarter size amount of product. It's by shea moisture, low porosity protien free leave-in detangler! I want 2 leave a picture but I'm gonna figure it out

    TFS! I have this experience almost every wash day. Sometimes I just dread doing my hair. Yours turned out so well. I will try this routine. Hopefully it works out.

    This was one of your best video! I enjoyed the details because I feel by hair is having a hard time on my right side it just doesn't show up to play. You remind me I need to deep condition and add more moisture like grape seed oil and to use my heat cap. Thanks for a great video look forward to the rice challenge.

    I think the extra hair shed may be caused by detangling with just water first and then using the conditioner. I used to do that but now I only detangle my hair with conditioner to give me the slip I need to retain length

    Idk tho, I didn't think it was a lot of hair. It was 2 weeks worth... and some ppl shed more than others... but this is always why I don't think "protective styling" is for everyone. Like I can feel my hair and scalp miss water after a few days.
