Thank you for this beautiful film. Seeing the country come together in the candlelight protests when I was in Korea left a very deep impression on me. This young democracy has been, in my opinion, blessed with a legacy of a strong civil society and a culture of coming together to to raise the voices of the people. I wish it would translate into a higher election participation and more young folks represented in Korean politics.

This explains politics, but glosses over the elements of incompetence at the time of the sinking. The New Yorker Magazine posted a video on April 9, 2019 that shows a visual record of what was happening at sea parallel to what the "leaders" were discussing. Appalling, to say the least. The civilian volunteer divers who tried to do what the leaders could not, save lives, paid the highest price. It is a film worth watching. But be warned: your blood pressure will go up on seeing the multiple layers of error/culpability at work. It is a wonder those remaining, whether parents or others, can even stand. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
There were children who never made it home, never got to graduate and continue their education, won’t start their careers, won’t start a family...
And then there is the old Captain who survived because he ran away like a coward! All those young people with a future ahead of them, died needlessly in a terrible way, trapped under the sea, suffocating, drowning, slowly seeing the water rise in their little room without any chance of survival.
It just pisses me off, it's such a terrible way to die. And the Captain didn't do anything to save them.
Imagine being a passenger of the Sewol Ferry. The screams of those fighting to stay alive and those who are losing they're strength and collapsing…that's a terrifying experience that can never be forgotten. Those who died were not given full, proper justice by the government and those who were responsible for the ferry.
The adult survivors living every day with those memories, maybe even seeing their coworkers and bosses with the same looks of grief. Maybe the person you see at the bus stop everyday isn't there anymore, maybe you see someone crying on a bench. A dog walking by on a leash, head hung low or lost in confusion on where their owner is. The students roaming the usually bustling school halls now notice how empty the building seems. Classrooms once bursting with life are now deserted, with only a few handfuls of faces, but never smiling ones. Noticing that it's been days since your brother or sister came home, and finding their name on a memorial. Realizing the one you love has their name written on a list of deaths, along with so many others you never knew.
Victim or survivor, adult or student, there were so many lives lost. Souls who will never fulfill or find their life's purposes. Millions of moments cut short, billions of memories never to be made. People you will never meet and things that will never be said. At memorials, you can look at someone and wonder, what were they like? Did they have a sibling? When was their birthday? What did they dream about every night? Things you will never get to know, and things that bring a harsh pang to everyone's hearts.
We can't just stand by like this. We are the new generation and we _will_ change this world. We _will_ learn from our mistakes and those of our ancestors, we _will_ teach out children to fight for what's right, and we most definitely _will_ be our own light. We won't wait for a shining beacon of hope to save us, we'll light our own candles. Let's all do this, in memory of those who never got to make it home, say one last goodbye to their families, hug their friends, graduate, start careers, retire, bring on a family, and so much more.
Let's do this in the memory and honor of the Sewol Ferry Incident and every incident out there. We'll rise for them.

My boyfriend is from Japan and I spoke with him if he knew about this case, he told of course he knew because it was all over the news. But japan had more of a rage against korea on how things were handled. Apparently the japanese coast was at the distance to see the Ferry sinking and their coastal guard was at reach and withing training to save them. Korean coastal guards didn't. But because of their relationship and territorial laws, japan had to get Korea's approval to save the people they could see drowning, but they were denied entry and were warned.
The government really did a shitty job here.
Same with the USA they rejected all help, and they have good relations with them, they trapped them to die

China, US and Japan offered to help but the korean government refused, there's rumor that they let two survivors stranded in sea until they died so they could bring them back, which is disgusting, especially coming from the government of a beautiful country.
I dont know whats the problem. They dont want to rescue, so why not let other countries help? People were dying inside the water and they just sit and wait? I wonder if they could listen to the victims' screams. Might most of them will commit suicide being haunted by all the screams.

I heard a lot did have survivors guilt and some committed suicide. I don’t remember where I heard that though.

@Hammer Hand well the thing is that we don't know that it wasn't planned.
Let's recap:
- The students were told to stay inside of the ship, while it's common sense that you have to get out of a sinking ship, best on top of it, ASAP. That's also what the captain and crew did, but still they told the students to stay inside.
- The coast guard did not save a single person. The only people who survived were those who didn't obey the order and were saved by fishermen who happened to be nearby and rushed to the ship. Afterwards the coast guard didn't make any effort to save, on the other hand the only thing they did was not allowing others to help. In "Diving Bell" we can see Lee Jong-In (and others) who went there privately and ordered a diving bell to the scene to dive themselves. First they had to wait several days until the coast guard let them go near the ship. When they were there and used the diving bell, the coast guard suddenly rammed their boat ( which other diving experts declared to be clearly attempted murder of the people inside the diving bell). The next day the coast guard forced them to leave.
- During the incident, president Park's office was not available for unknown reasons for several hours.
- Afterwards the main media companies (which are partly under government control) blamed the civilians, who went there and tried to help, for the disaster which influenced public opinion a lot.
We know now that president Park was part of a cult and that the cult's founder's daughter Choi Soon-Sil basically monitored almost everything Park did. The incident occured almost exactly 15 years after Choi Soon-Sil's father's (the original cult leader's) death and rumor has it that during the incident, Park was not available, because they were holding a special ceremony for the cult.
This might just be a conspiracy theory, but there are rumors that this incident was planned as a sacrifice for the cult. This would explain basically all the points I've listed above and so far this is the only theory I've read that is capable of doing that.
In that case, the Sewol Ferry disaster wasn't just a murder, it was a carefully planned massacre.
I'd be really happy to hear what you think about that and if you have doubts about my points being true, I'd ask you to watch "Diving Bell: the truth shall not sink with Sewol" where you'll be able to see it for yourself.

The most disturbing part is that the US Navy arrived 40 minutes after the ship starts to sink, but the Korean government said that they can handle it and sent them back, but the truth is that they just left the people to die and try to cover it up as if they died because of drowning instead of hypothermia, i heard that there was a victim's phone that has taken a picture of the victim (or try to contact her mother, i forgot) on 22nd of April while the ship sunk on the 16th

The sinking of the ship was not the tragedy at all. It was the government's and captain's selfishness that made this situation horrible, disappointing & heartbreaking.

Eddie W i feel you. I cried tons when i watched the documentary of Sewol. I wished the diver who committed suicide knew how grateful the family of those that survived and even those who lost their loved ones for his efforts.

I watched a video of one of the students laughing with each other and joking about how they’ll die. They really thought they were going to be rescued. It’s heartbreaking to hear them laughing and having fun.

Ask questions........who is ferry company's owner...... relationship with current president MOON..... why did coast guard denied rescue help from US navy and other nations...... why rescue helicopters were denied rescue fly over........ who reported initial report of ALL RESCUED in the very beginning......why was this ferry allowed to depart when no departure was issued due to heavy fog.......why did the ferry sped up at the narrow strait......... why was this ship chosen the day before of the incident...... why did the key member of crew changed the day before of the incident......... how did a fresh maritime college graduate, only worked for the company for 4months get the wheel.......why was this very ship under constant repairs ever since it was purchased and renovated......... why isnt there any investigation to this day even though current president was successful in impeaching a sitting president with this incident, making it into the biggest political scandal the world has ever seen

I just really pray for justice and the truth. I want to do something but I'm not Korean. I hope their nation won't forget this ever. And as I watch more and more videos or documentaries about this tragedy, I've learned that it's really political and it keeps me asking more and more questions on how the case is handled. I can't help to be a misanthrope after watching this. How could they sacrifice those young high school students for political reasons? What is the true intention? I just saw this in my newsfeed here in UA-cam because I followed Korean shows and this appeared... it was like an anniversary commemoration to the incident and when I watched it, I was devastated and I'm missing out so much because it'a been five years since this happened.

could you imagine, being a surviving student? that person you expect to see around the corner as you leave the classroom, that person who used to always ask to borrow your pencil, that person who biked past you in a hurry to not be late; the people whose names you might never have even known, gone forever and with them have gone the little moments and memories that made up your everyday school life. it's not just tragic, it haunts forever. dusty desks, ribbons and flowers, slightly less congested hallways...
my heart breaks for these students and parents. i am proud for the political changes and shifts toward justice. but no matter the political climate, the dead do not come back. i extend my deepest, most sincere agony and anger for and with these students, parents, and divers--civilians who helped in the search efforts soon after the sinking. i pray for strength, for remembrance, for the community that will rally around their suffering for this dark tragedy. i vow to one day visit the harbor, leave my prayers and ribbon...

It's even more devastating when you realize that many of the bodies recovered actually died from hypothermia and not drowning. This means that someone's child was trapped for hours or maybe even days before succombing to the cold, surround by their dead classmates. All this could have been prevented if the governement had accepted Japan's and the US's help that arrived LONG before the ship had sank. Heartbreaking.

I couldn’t help but let out an audible scoff when the man said Park Geun Hye didn’t know about the Sewol tragedy and that he himself didn’t hear about it til the next day. I was in Seoul when it happened. Even as a foreigner I knew what was going by early afternoon.
It’s scary how people can blindly support a leader and make excuses for them. Especially when so many innocent children needlessly lost their lives and their families are still waiting for some sort of explanation five years later.

I'm sorry but what exactly is a president supposed to do in that situation? Jump into the water and save people? The emergency situation response team was gathered and president Park did command that they do the job. The president herself doesn't know the protocols and procedures in place and I wonder what y'all expect from her.

Sadly, the time where she ordered them on what to do was when the ship had sunk. Took more than 1 hour to wait for her order and in those time frame many could have been rescued and survived... everyone had their fault parts in this. Authorities who couldn't make the right decision, the coast guards who came to the scene and did nothing until last minute and the captain that lied to save his ass and abandoned the passengers

I remember something a father said when the boat was completely submerged; “what do we do? I can’t even see the ferry anymore.” The pain in his voice...
I keep looking over at my sleeping toddler while tears stream down my face. As soon as the survivor said he blindly grabbed a little girl to save her, I just broke down. I've lived in Seoul since 2009, I was here when this happened. Having a kid completely made it really hit home.
The Thai exhausted all of their resources to save 13 children, someone even died in the rescue mission. What about Korea? killed 300 more people and mostly students!
And the Thai government didn't murder 300+ children. Like South Korea.
Just what I was thinking, it is totally nonsense. Concordia Ship sank 4000+ people on board but 17+ people died. Sewol tragedy is like some one purposely wants them to get killed.

The political scene during the protest was just horrific, the Pro-Park side disgusted me. I bet every penny I own that if it was their children that died, they would call for resignation too. The man that said she can't respond to every problem is fair, I'm sure she is busy. But if she wasn't giving her attention to saving the lives of those kids - what was she doing with her "precious" time? What could've been more pressing than taking advantage of all the man power at her disposal to save these poor souls? These half-hearted excuses are not only baffling, but insulting.

I literally can't understand how anyone can support Park at this point unless one is literally brainwashed. She was controlled by a cult that exorted people for bribes, if that's not enough to remove one's credibility then nothing will. If you’re gonna put 300+ people on a ship, there better be a life jacket for every single one of them.
Allergic to humans not animals many people that died had life jackets; the life jackets actually make it harder to move. They’re supposed to put it on once outside, not while they’re still inside.
If they were inside, wearing the life jacket and the water broke in, they still dead. The problem here is that they were told to stay still where they were and do not move. They trusted their captain and obeyed him as their captain was running away and save himself. Most of the survivors didn't follow the instruction, I heard that they broke the window and jumped to the sea and rescued by the local or fishing ship

Even a life jacket wasn't enough💔 a single sentence in that urgent situation matters a lot to the students since the don't know what to do and to cope with the situations. Screw the instructor honestly.
@@lang-ed3bk the main problem was that they were made in 1940ish. At that point the life jackets were no longer usable so that’s why it never ended up working either.
This documentary breaks my heart so much. So much pain was felt by the nation during that event, and understandably so. What a tragedy.

I just feel sad for the students who died😞They could have been future doctors,lawyers, engineers,teachers, stars, farmers etc😞 Their dreams were stolen from them. Thank you so much for not only talking about Sewol-ferry but also talking about the part of Korean politics. Whenever asked, I’ve tried my best to explain the gap of politics view btw young generation & old generation AND the gap btw southeast n southwest but since I’m not good at explaining, it’s been always a struggle for me.
Growing up with my father and grandma from Gyeongsang-province, who were more like brain-washed by Park-Jung-Hee, (they’re still calling Park-Geun-Hye princess) I still have hard time talking about politics and history with them.
I just hope the gap will be narrowed little by little.

This tragedy had nothing to do with politics. It is based on kids who did not use common sense and get out while they could regardless of what they were told. The rescue services were busy worrying about pictures instead of sending helecopters. People assumed that everyone had left the vessel without checking and there was plenty of time for that before it became critical. The failure to immediately raise the ship and possibly save people who found remaining air pockets. The refusal of help from outside agencies. the failure to use more helicopters and bring other vessels to help rescue those in the water. The Captain who left his sinking ship first. the idiot who told the passengers to stay inside to be rescued. How were they to be rescued if they were inside the ship instead of on deck? EVERYONE involved is responsible. - That includes parents who told their kids to listen to their teachers without knowledge of the situation - thus guaranteeing their death.
Yesterday I was upset about waking up at 7 am.... man what a unnecessary Problem I had...

Till today I'm so angry and sad about what happen. How can they act so slow in this kind of situation?????!!!! They had so much time to save them arghhh!! And asking the students not to move from their place wtf!!!? To all the people never ever listen to any authorities in this kind of situation and don't panic and try to escape from every possible way and that's how you will manage to survive.

I first heard about this when the news broke out but I had NO IDEA that the majority of passengers were students. And that there were hundreds that didn’t survive! I just think that’s crazy, especially imagining being a survivor and realizing that people who you used to surround yourself with daily are just... gone and will never come back. It’s such a tragedy.
yes, and out of the 10 sections only 75 students from 4 sections were retrieved. so imagine...... not even a single person from the other sections... so so sad and devastating. truly an event that'll mark down in history.

I saw a documentary that had stated some of the victims did not die from drowning. So there were some trapped and ran out of air. The unbelievable improper handling of the emergency procedures then the rescue after it had completely capsized is an outrage.
It's so heartbreaking to know that a lot of survivors ended up committing suicide because of the guilt they had for surviving compared to all their classmates who passed. I hope everyone who was affected by this will find peace someday and I'm so sorry they had to go through this.
I was a university professor in Korea for many years. When this happened, I knew exactly the situation: those who defied their seniors lived.

My wife and I had visited the Gyeongju Historic Area the day before the tragedy. We were intermingling with students who were planning to visit the Spirited Gardens on Jeju Island the following day as were we. They were all so friendly and willing to take selfies and photos with us. The next morning aboard our ship we heard of the Sewol Ferry tragedy and the loss of so many beautiful and gracious human beings. Ours hearts, as well as those of many fellow passengers, were broken. This video is so difficult for me to watch because I wonder to this day if any of those young people had crossed our paths the day before. They will be in our hearts and minds forever.

In emergency, when you said the children to stay put, they will stay still. An adult must thinking better at this situation, even if it's just pure act by gut. But to do nothing for them, is the worst. Well, probably I'm too emotional since no one ever train for an accident/tragedy. Like the elder people said, one can say how heroic they are, but real heroes act when in dire need, even sacrifice themself for it.
My eyes are swollen from crying. I watched a lot of documentaries of this tragedy today and even though I'm from the Philippines, my heart is in pain. I pray that all the victims and their families may find comfort and peace.

I agree. I also am a Filipino, I think I discovered this incident like month ago. The first video I saw is a boy (victim) recording what's happening during the incident. It was so heart breaking. I cried the whole time watching it. I also saw a vid dedicated to the deseased (their names were being mentioned). I searched some documentaries about the Sewol Tragedy and majority of the time, I felt guilty because here I am, being lazy with my life and asking why am I still alive? (Fam prob, etc) But after seeing the last moments of the children... I started to realize how lucky I am to be able to be with my loved ones and to be alive and still have a chance to chase my dreams. I feel like it is also my fault why they died hopelessly. I know it doesn't make senseeeeee. But that's the truth. I'm so sorry for them. Rest in peace beautiful souls. 04.16.14 all of you will never be forgotten. See you soon. =(
@@charlemagnethegreat2916 Typhoons are not the best comparison to this tragedy as they are natural phenomena. In Sewol's case, that is a clear mishandling from the rescuers to the higher ups. When supertyphoon Haiyan came, no one can't be blamed because it was a natural disaster. But its effect worsen when many lives were taken due to poor preparations and systems and when funds were corrupted later... An impeachment could've happen immediately that time. But, status quo defeated democracy.

All accidents where human lives are lost are tragic and heartbreaking. However, the Sewol incident, in particular, is to me one of the worst accidents I know of, mainly because of how so many young lives could have been saved hadn't the captain and the crew acted the way that they did. Losing lives is always hard, but losing lives you know could have been saved if some people had made different choices in critical moments is so much worse.
This wasn't a accident. The ferry had a weight limit the owner didn't care he wanted money and well he killed a bunch of people doing that. Plus repairs need be made before it was sea worthy well wasn't repaired. Using a old captain and not the original captain who told everyone that it not safe since too heavy and repairs haven't been made was shut up or get fired. So yeah this isn't a accident this is murder.

I regret, oh man. This is extremely sad and I'm so sorry for those poor high school students who will never experience the simple happiness in life.
And the battle of giving your lifejacket to your friend or keeping it to save yourself. Your life or their life. And then the guilt. And the pain.
Just imagine. The people you laugh with daily, walk home with daily, eat snacks with. Some students were probably thinking, "Gosh, when I get home, I'm gonna get a nice, long rest and stuff myself..." And then it's gone. Everything.

Jungkook was in the the merry around place where ghosted people surrounded him was his classmates, and he accepted to go along with them in the paradise and accepted his fate. And all the clothes in the darkness was they’re fear and then the clothes grew more to the skies was their paradise.
I saw the video where one of the teens that passed away had filmed... and the fact that they were joking about their deaths because they had so much faith in the captain but the captain was one of the first people to leave makes me really mad..
I still remember it like it was yesterday.. I went to Korea for study just a week after the tragedy. I remember a couple of months after that a lot of people gathered at downtown Seoul and asking us to signed something like petition (maybe) because i can't read hangul at that time, and gave a plastic ring with yellow ribbon in return. I saw hundreds of the victims picture in the city center. It was really heartbreaking. I can't help but crying when i saw it. I hope they Rest in Peace. I hope the victims' family will find peace. I hope this kind of tragedy won't be happen again.

I was a student one year above the victims when this happened, and I remember how our teachers were actually so guilt consumed they were unable to teach for the day. I asked a teacher what they personally would possibly have to feel guilty about, to which he replied: " We're the ones who teach you to obey adults and do what you're told, and here we are unable to do anything when that got them killed'. Even today, this remains a deep scar to many in Korea. I hope this never happens again, and may the victims be at peace.

I was into K-Pop but not enough to know the tragic news. I found out in 2015 - 2016 after a few idols talked about it in personal videos and BTS made a song dedicated to it. Stop acting like you're high and mighty and be happy people are educating themselves on this tragedy now. I wouldn't blame some people halfway across the world if they didn't know about 9/11, because I'm not a judgmental person.

I swear I literally wanted to cry but I can't. This is the most saddest sentence I heard today, your friends is like your siblings also. I couldn't imagine myself without my friends. I hope they are in a better place right now.

I was just thinking about it. I like the culture but this blind obedience is horrifying. Just because someone is older doesn't mean that you must listen to them in every situation. I wouldn't have stayed put for hours on the sinking ship just cause someone told me to. Isn't it common sense to get out of cabins and try to get on the deck?...... I hope every person who is responsible for this tragedy lives with the consequences for the rest of their lives.
I have seen so many arguments devolve into "How old are you?!" yelled by the older, and usually in the wrong, person. Elder person goes nuts and the younger person still tries to be respectful. It is a HUUUGGE problem. Also, I see FAR more elders act like complete assholes than younger people. It is like they turn 45 and their behavior gets worse with age.
That's because we're always told to 'respect your elders' and 'be an obedient child'

This is my first time watching video about this tragic though I've heard back then. I'm very sad. And i cried a lot when Mr Kim said one of the student was without life jacket cause he gave it to his friend and he feel guilty cause he couldn't give it to him. Imagine around 250 children at your school suddenly don't attend anymore. Whether they're your friends or not, whether you knew them or whether you'd never spoken to them before, it must be the most horrible feeling. You know what happened to them and that must be so hard to get over the fact that they passed away on the same day, in the same accident, alongside their classmates. It's horrible, RIP to those people who had their whole lives ahead of them and never got to live them.
In every disaster like this there will be survivors though few are said to be lucky yet they feel burdened they are the only left. For others they're the voice and witness of the horrific tragedy. It is definitely heartbreaking.

During the incident the ones who survived were the few who did not listen to the captain's instructions to stay put. Also, the previous captain had made many complaints about the state of the ship to the shipping company but he was threatened to be fired if he didn't stop. It's a bit frustrating that nothing about the people responsible for the accident is mentioned in this video.

The story of a 6-year-old boy that was on the ship breaks my heart. He was on the ship with his 3-year-old sister, and they only had one lifevest. He gave it to his sister and told her that he would be alright; his mother later found the 3-year-old and survived but the father and the boy didn't. It's heartbreaking.
The mother didn’t survive either but only her body was recovered, the 7 year old boy and his fathers weren’t ,only the 6 year old girl survived, she’s being raised by her aunt

I remember hearing news of this when I was in the middle of teaching a school day. I couldn't believe what was happening. It was actually happening. Teaching here, I feel a direct connection with my students and care deeply for them. My empathy extends to the students of the Sewol tragedy and it continues to break my heart. Last year, I thought it was time to visit the ship in Mokpo. Seeing it there, on its side, I could not hold back the tears. It was a feeling I had no control over. I did not know these poor students, but the sorrow I felt and will forever feel for them is indescribable.

I was in Korea when the riot and peaceful protest were happening... I've never felt so much energy in the air.. it was electrifying and I'm happy they were able to remove her from her position because those kids could and should have been saved. Its heartbreaking
I still remember that day. I taught ESL to many Korean students. The school went outraged then quiet a second later. We mourned for a week. I couldn't open sns because I couldn't bear seeing and hearing everything. Some of our students went back to their home country to join fights for justice. And when good news came, my former students sent me videos and pictures of the parties on the streets. Now, a day before 2021, Sewol is and will always be remembered. 🎗

As a foreign resident in Korea, it is deeply uncomfortable watching the annual memorials - there’s this strange feeling that you’re not allowed to fully mourn what’s happened because you’re not Korean. It isn’t a feeling that all expats experience but it makes me wonder if this is how some citizens here feel when tragedies happen in my home country? Each year, I watch activities that are dignified and news reports that still show the wound is deep. I can’t imagine how hard this video was to create. Thank you for the work on this.
What saddens me most is how they could’ve been saved. Passengers were still living days after, yet the government neglected their duty to save those who could be saved, resulting is such a tragic loss. Apparently it cost millions to lift the ferry out, however in a state of emergency, this should have been done immediately. Choosing to not send teams out to rescue the rest who could have been rescue and still had that little bit of hope is murder. I read a news article saying that the captain only got 12 years in prison, and the crew even less, despite this being the loss of hundreds. I guess this could be said as gross negligence. I don’t know much about the South Korean government, but I hope that things have improved. This level of negligence wouldn’t be allowed here, so I hope it doesn’t happen there.

WoW! This was an amazing work. Only thing missing were civilian divers who fought as much as parents. Some even weren't able to handle the pain and horror of what they saw. They needed a mention.
Their parents get eating alive while watching their loves one slowly died in the ship, I couldn't imagine how painful they was. Is not like a suddenly and unhelpful accident, there's so many hours before the ship will sink and during that time they could save many life but they didn't. a high ego gov, unhelpful gov and selfish captain. I cried every time when I see this Sewon tragedy. Their parent sure living in sorrow every single day.
I never paid much attention to the tragedy as it happened but seeing it now, it broke my heart really.. Seeing the video footages of the students laughing not knowing what to do while the ship tilted and waiting for the instruction of the elders/ship crews who set foot first out of the sunken ship hurts me a lot.. The broken promise of safety towards those young people who were about to see the beauty of the world..My heart aches so much for this documentary.. I felt reallu sorry for them.. Hoping that they find peace now.. After 5 yrs of agony, may our almighty father grant the families, the survivors and the lost souls peace..Continue to live life..God has a perfect reason for what have had happened.. When ships sink, there would air pockets and spaces. Just imagine students finding those air pockets and having their hopes up, only to pass away from hypothermia, darkness and loneliness because the government failed to send down rescuers and denying help from other nations.
It's a pity that the students have life saver jackets yet none of them made it out alive. It's really true that too much trust can kill you.

Its not only painful for the parents who lost their kids , its much more painful for the student who survived , they will remember it , had nightmares about that day ,they will walk in school with no friends , and they might had depression over what happen .
i was in high school in Korea when this happened. there's so much mystery and so many political connections to this incident that it's hard to really describe the hows and whys in depth. i remember how shocked we were. my country was shaken to its core. nothing had ever happened like this in modern history. there is still a set-up downtown for the victims, to memorialize them in a way. it's heartbreaking.
Careful. Namyoung and Seohae were only 20 years from each other. Sewol was only about 20 years from Seohae. Let us not also forget the Mall Tragedy. It happens a little too often out of terrible regulations. Now that you are out of High School you can be apart of the change that places Korean citizens' lives above government/company profits. Every election in American we have candidates who want to cut down on regulations because they are "too costly."

I remember when this happened; I used to teach Adult ESL in Santa Clara, CA, USA, which has a very large Korean population, and most of my students were Korean. It didn't matter that they didn't know these victims; they were in just as much agony for their fellow countrymen. My heart ached for them; and it was all the more heartbreaking when some of my students were translating the video that was released to the public. What started out as fun and games turned to fear; one of the kids saying I love you mom and dad. This whole story still makes me cry. Oh and I remember being so angry at the footage of the captain being rescued. How dare he abandon his boat and leave behind his passengers. That is the ultimate betrayal of his position and against humanity. It still makes me angry seeing that.

I will never forget this. I left Korea in 2010 and then discovered that a woman who I'd taught while living there had a teenage daughter who died in this tragedy. This is a beautifully made documentary tribute. Beautiful and heartbreaking.

there is a video uploaded by the parent of a victim on yt and it's 20 something mins long basically one of the students recorded the whole thing and you could see the fear in his and his friends voice halfway thru the vid and its all subtitled so you can hear one of the kid go
