I don't think he was attacking that elderly female to "assert his power". There's a more likely reason, one grounded in biology: She wouldn't mate with him. When females Chimps get old, and can no longer have babies, their sex drive evaporates. Not only that but her "equipment" no longer works, so her private areas won't "accommodate" the male -- if the males try to mate anyways, it's extremely painful. Females can reject a males advance a couple times but there is a breaking point with these males. When they hit it, they start attacking the females, bullying them into submission. If the elderly female isn't giving in, it's just a matter of time until she suffers some kind of injury which can become fatal (broken infected bones, sepsis, clots, hemorrhaging, etc) And from the Chimp's perspective, this is a good thing. Elderly female chimps can't produce offspring anymore, so all the food she is eating/resources she's consuming is a bit of a waste if you ask me.
