Years ago, when I was young and the moon was new, I fell in adoration with a black Japanese Bantam hen that was part of a small farmer's "traveling petting zoo". She was such a tiny, perfect, chicken. She didn't like being touched, which made her an odd choice for a petting zoo, but she was a beautiful, well-mannered hen and just a magnificent iridescent black. I have standard sized birds. The multicolored part of the flock, all 'heritage' chickens, support the Dorking flock. I'm planning on expanding slightly this year - more colorful layers (I have a customer just for the green eggs, because their child loves pretending to eat 'green eggs and ham'.) But am stuck deciding between all brown layers, general brown layers, a purposely chosen group, and all 'Easter Eggers'. The new Dorkings are a given - (The hatchery I use at the moment only allows a limited number of certain rare birds to each customer, but their quality is fantastic. I have a lavender splash Maran, quite by accident -she is a beautiful bird and lays not quite dark brown eggs with dark speckles. Marans, in general, don't do well in the kind of heat we get here, so I'm going to have to set up some kind of mist system to help her, and a couple of the others.
I believe the mystery tracks were from deer, just based on the distance between the tracks. The snow fell into the tracks in a way to obscure the toes of the animal tracks so I can't be sure.
A lot of smallholders and some farms offer "taster" days with tours of the farm. Anyone who is further interested are able to book courses to suit their needs. I went on an alpaca course which was interesting, but only for a day. That was a couple of years ago - I think my husband hoped it would stop me dreaming there! LOL! But now it's turned around - we went to a smallholding with cows, alpacas, goats, rhea, sheep, turkeys, ducks and chickens all living well and the practice looked perfect. It gave us a lot to think about on the way home. We ordered a trio of muscovies and ended up with a quartet from this place and, well, husband is now sold on the idea of guard alpacas, and the dream gradually becomes a reality. :D Although I don't think we will be getting ducklings any time soon - Duke is keen and so are the girls - but pounces back to front. Stupid boy! 🙄 So I digress. I'll be going on more alpaca courses prior to purchase and now thinking of adding a couple of sheep! More courses!
I'm sort of the opposite, my grandparents are farmers and Stardew Valley came a lot after I already got to know this kind of life style. I always imagined that the Harvest Moon\Stardew Valley player avatar are sort of "the chosen one" as is with many other video games, and that's why his farm always goes the way he planned
Lol I'm using Stardew Valley in my off season to practice efficient spacing and succession planting. It also gave me the idea of maybe Angora rabbits in the future since I'm a handspinner and *freaking love the fluffy critters*! Fun video!
I only have one Angora rabbit, but she is a delight. Besides being crazy fluffy, she's incredibly sociable too. Our rabbits free range in the main pasture with other livestock, and she will come running for attention if I step outside.
I miss the snow, I miss New Hampshire and Vermont....New England is a magical and homely place. The South is an oven. Also I play Stardew Valley so much in one month I've logged 100+ hours.
I found your channel because of Stardew Valley and this video. So far I like what I see, subscribed. For the physical labor and exhaustion you talk about, what I like about Stardew vs Harvest Moon, is that Stardew actually represents this with the level system. Your energy bar depletes quickly in the beginning due to your low level. This ties in with the lore of being a city office worker who justed moved to the farm. As time goes on you level up which represents you becoming more physically fit as your energy depletes less.
I would recommend for anyone interested in farm birds to just start with a small flock of maybe 5 birds. If you plan the coop right, it won't have to be that big and there are plenty of design choices to be found on the internet but I would recommend designing a simple coop based on where in your garden you want it be and the needs it has to meet. I have chickens who spend most of their time outdoors and pretty much only use the coop to sleep and lay eggs.
Harvest Moon was awesome when I was a kid, and Stardew Valley is probably my favorite game now. I think it's pretty silly to think that either of those games are anything like real farming, though. That said, playing Stardew is a fun way of kinda-sorta scratching the farming itch until we can get a patch of land for a ourselves.
I have enough hard time just keeping up with composting, yard work, trimming trees training a grapevine, and planning and planting my vegetable garden. 77 years old and I have no time to do all I want to do. I am also an artist, when can I paint or draw? I had to set a time for art work. So Friday I lock the door and create in my art Studio. I do not even answer my phone. I come out to eat, get water and use the bathroom that is it! Other wise my art work would go down the tubes.
This was so lovely! Growing up absolutely adoring Harvest Moon games (and now Stardew) is one of the main things that attracted me to a farm lifestyle. I went to school for design, but after graduating decided I needed to give it a shot and go for broke at learning to farm. I became a farmhand for a couple with a small scale market farm and loved it. With their support, I'll be moving to the farm this season and starting my own business growing food. My family keeps joking all of my Harvest Moon dreams are being realized; but they really are.
That's the second time this week that I search a subject completely unrelated to farming (such as video games and chinese scams) and end up watching your videos. I myself have been searching for a small piece of land to start a homestead here in Brazil and get away from the city job. Not a lot of similarities but not to far from your reality either. Best of luck to us all. Thanks for the great content.
OMG I HAVE BEEN PLAYING THAT GAME, IT’S SO AWESOME! But I have to say it’s not like real farming because when you get tired in real life you can’t eat to maximize your energy again to keep working. And there is a shelf life to the food harvested. Also, IF ONLY farming paid so much for homemade mayo and pumpkins- that would be awesome! Edit: I also wish I had a super sharp scythe like in Stardew. Edit 2: the point you made about the trade off between getting things done on the farm versus having to go places to get other things done (like socializing, family gatherings, or working another job) is spot on. Also, as a kid, I remember working from sun up to sun down when we were planting and harvesting. It was grueling. Having machines can help a lot but weeding is done by hand, and when your garden is 3-5 acres just for your own family, that is substantial. Then, you have to do maintenance work by pulling weeds in the corn fields or checking on the cattle and hogs. It doesn’t end. But it IS rewarding. I miss it terribly.
Stardew is my go to Happy Place ™️. Only recently replaced by my actual growing homestead that I started largely because of this game haha. It put it in context and made it peaceful. This vid is a clever idea haha. Plus! I WISH the mayor of my town would come pick up my shit and sell it every night hahahaha that’d be amazing
I don't like the idea of a relative stranger wandering around my property late at night. It's a feature in a lot of farming games and always seems creepy.
Well this video just made my morning! I LOVED Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley and I cannot love more that a fellow New England homesteader just compared them to real life 😅 I’m always looking for other NH and VT farm channels so happy to have stumbled on yours!

Me, also a Texan - Been there. Done that.(2 years in Connecticut, 4 years in Ohio) I'll take the long growing season and potential hurricanes (Texas' "Golden Coast" region) over ice and snow all winter long, even though it's lovely to visit. At least I can start planting my spring veggies in February.
Oh heck no. You can keep your uber heat and horrific humidity. I can move snow around. I can add a layer or three. And you can keep your twisty winds too.
This is really cool! I live on a small farm back home and definitely feel the similarities and differences you mentioned. Mainly your problem solving skills are really put to the test. Many years we’ve had disasters like our hops growing so large the fence falls over to an animal killing all of our chickens. It’s difficult to be setback, but you always learn how to do things better for next time
I've always had an interest in farming, especially because my dad used to be one before suffering from health issues and had to quit. I got Stardew Valley, not long after I got chickens and grew my first (and very few) crops and I dont regret it one bit. This year i have even bigger plans for my chickens and my farming.
About the tracks, I can’t tell without a close up, but whatever it is, it was bounding through the snow. Maybe bobcat? I loved the topic today. I’m addicted to UA-cam. I learn a lot, but there are definitely channels who entertain as well. Yourself included. Double value!

To everyone watching this video that enjoys playing video games: your hobbies don’t have to be productive. Video games stimulate the brain and improve problem solving. Just because a hobby isn’t physical or profitable, doesn’t mean it isn’t valuable if it makes you happy! Have a lovely day 💕
I’m glad you thought enough to put this out there. There are many people who have a romanticized view of homesteading or farming etc. even if this encourages 1person to get up & plant 1 plant or care for an animal (dog, cat, goldfish, etc) then you’ve made an impact. Your the dude. Love Toby! He’s looking great & has grown but when he sat & looked up at you, Auh, amazing. Thx🙋♀️
I feel you Morgan. I used to play a lot of video games. It can take up so much time. I'm not saying it doesn't have any value, but I feel like it's been a lot of time wasted.
Green Dream Project it is wasted time. I spend 10 years doing it and totally neglected real social interactions. Now I stopped using computers almost 100% and am preparing to start my own farm
@@4philipp that is fantastic! We still use computers, but I've drastically cut down on game playing. We're currently making a life for ourselves living off-grid.
Oh man! I LOVE Harvest Moon! My sister showed it to me on the Gameboy years ago and I've played it ever since, though it's been a while since I've played because I also struggled with video game addiction, so I don't play a whole lot more. I also don't have the time--I'm a senior in college, so dumping precious hours into video games as opposed to reading/homework/family time isn't as appealing anymore. That said, I have put over 300 hours into Stardew Valley, but I haven't played since the summer. It's an awesome game. I really enjoyed the video! Having a homestead is an eventual dream of mine, and has been since I was little. Thank you for taking the time to make this :)
I think it's great that the game inspires people to garden, and grow their own food! I've grown very basic vegetables, beans, tomatoes, garlic, onions and there is something about eating the food you grow yourself that makes it taste so good!!
I seriously LOVE this. As an avid gamer and someone who loves to grow my own food this really hit home. I played my first Harvest Moon game around 2003, when I was in the 3rd grade. I loved that game, and always had so much fun taking care of the livestock and raising my crops. Fast forward to 2018, when we purchased a house with one acre of land, started a garden, and got our first ducks and chickens. Games like this really inspired me to try it out for myself, and while they're definitely not realistic, it was still enough to pique my interest ❤
can you show us the inside of the goose house sometime?, its so dark and mysterious in there, id love a quick look :D seeing their bedding, water and so on :3
I think if anyone does think that, they’re children or very, very, very sheltered. I love stardew valley because it gives me an escape from my life (bedbound and disabled, in extreme poverty), and let’s me dream of a life I wish I could have. I grew up around farming, in a very agricultural area. I know it’s hard, backbreaking work. I have farmers I’m descended from. My grandmother lied about her age when she was 16 so she could go work in Washington DC during ww2 because she wanted the escape farm life because she saw how it had worn down her mother. I still wish I could have a small farm, even just big enough to feed myself. Stardew let’s me dream about that and having interpersonal relationships again.
Working farming jobs and loving Stardew I cant help but agree , another large similarity is having help can make a farm feel like everything is going by so much quicker in terms of essential daily tasks.
Getting stardew was awesome when I had to rehome a bunch of my chickens. Definitely raising anything is harder than it tends to be in a game but I have to say stardew does remind me sometimes to enjoy the routine and make sure to share what I get with people I love :D
Thought up a Project IMO you should strongly consider before next winter. Don't think it would be expensive and the work savings would be huge . Run a line from your existing outside faucet to the other side of the barn that's closest to where you need it for the Ducks. Maybe you already have a different place you can tie it to run a new water line. I would suggest run the line through the Barn if that would be convenient. Less chance of freezing. Rent a Trencher for a Weekend, so you only pay Rental Charges for One day. PVC and Frost Free Hydrants aren't expensive. Most of the work wouldn't require a plumber.
well i have seen you going from a soggy city man to a hulking muscle beast duck farmer now at the farm!!!..just ask your wife!....LOL... .ps. how do your ducks eggs not freeze at that temps???? mine did..offal!...im glad to see your chick trio are much happier now....very glad....do let us know when you get your first egg!!!!
I’ve been obsessively playing Stardew Valley lately lmao (totally unrelated to this channel) so this is super timely haha! I also noticed the music in the background (Rainbow Road? Gravity Falls Theme?) Are there any other video games, cartoons, comics that you’ve read before you started your farm? I know you have limited time now with the farm, but are there any that you want to start eventually?
I play video games all the time like farming simulator but i also volunteer at a few farms and i have no idea d that every day also love ur vid keep up the good work
I really enjoyed this video. What a lovely way of life. I just play on Stardew Valley for ridiculous amounts of time. Did I hear a bit of Parappa the rapper in the background?
I don’t play Stardew Valley but I do play Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons by Marvelous. (HM/SoS as far as I’m aware from my talk with a friend who does play it, depending on the game, has more detail in actual farming area. Like if you don’t water enough or water something too much a plant will die, like the trees in Sunshine Islands. And if animals are out during snow or rain they can get sick and die if you don’t give them medicine right away.)
Farming IRL definitely sounds like a greater challenge than it is in any video game really! But even then, I’d rather be a farmer than a mindless zombie office worker!
-Before Anything else is said, I loved your video, I thought you were right on target with absolutely everything and this is coming from someone who grew up on a farm, who came from generations of farmers. This is my advice for those people, who want to get into farming; be aware of the disasters you might face. The things people don't prepare you for. And the weight of the setbacks those can cause and the emotional toil that takes. Like mentioned in the video, Animal & Crop disease is something that can be very devastating if you don't have experience, especially if you're trying to do things organic. Sometimes, having practical knowledge and solutions isn't enough. If you lose an entire crop of tomatoes to blight, you can't just restart. Even if you have enough time in a growing season, it doesn't mean you'll be able to figure out the problem and fix it in time. You might just end up with a bad crop, over and over and over. This is not only hard on the psyche, but also your time and wallet. No one wants to work for months on end and continuously reap 0 reward. Lets take a look at baby animals though, something a farmer might find joyous and wonderful. Imagine your heating lamp malfunctions, and burns down your barn, leaving half of your animals alive, yet, burned so severely you must put them to rest. This is by far one of the hardest things I've had to face growing up. And yet, these kinds of disasters are not uncommon. Seeing a parent animal trample its newborn baby to death because a garden snake startled it, having to deal with animals being stillborn. These aren't simple tasks that end with "And the animal died" it doesn't end there, because it's your responsibility to handle these situations. Regardless of what they are, it doesn't get easier emotionally. And you can't just stop and take a breather to center yourself, because everything depends on you. On farms where you raise animals for butchering (these aren't the same kind of animals you keep for eggs, milk, etc,) there's a rule, to not make eye contact with the animal. So you don't form a bond with it. But if you want to farm for the joy of it, that rule won't work for you. Even if you deliver the animal to a butcher, to have the killing and butchering done for you; It's not like going to the supermarket to buy ground chuck. You'll know and that can only go one of two ways. So, really, really, think hard on this one before you spend money. The last thing that no one really talks about, is that "small farms" in and of themselves (as imagined in gaming scenarios) even under a perfect scenario are not profitable. Even most middle sized to large farms, struggle financially on a regular basis. This is a cause for much stress and worry and usually being forced into sub-par conditions that you otherwise wouldn't be okay with. Even farms that specialize struggle. The farming life is very dependent on a lot of "out-of-control-equations" or "luck" if you would see it from a gaming perspective. A few unlucky days can ruin a season, a few unlucky seasons can ruin your entire farm. In the end, everything comes down to willpower. If your will to succeed is stronger than any turmoil you might face. Then the farm life, just might be right for you. That and like said in the video, repetition, repetition, repetition! For anyone wanting to get into the small farm life, below is what used to be my daily farm life. We lived in a very mountainous place with frequent bears, foxes, deer,(
I also played Harvest Moon and I currently play Stardew. I am no longer addicted to games like I was but still play them because I need a lot of rest time because of my disability. I have been very interested in farming since I was young but I'm not capable. I may get a few chickens one day, though and a planter box :)

@@sheehangrimme4907 it was 43 in Western Sydney.Still sweating my arse off at 11.25 pm.
Last weekend we had a snow storm that filled everything with snow, up to 30 inches /76,2cm
Fun video!
CallMeFox love angoras.
I only have one Angora rabbit, but she is a delight. Besides being crazy fluffy, she's incredibly sociable too. Our rabbits free range in the main pasture with other livestock, and she will come running for attention if I step outside.
Rebecca Cox do you shear her for the fiber?
That is the future plan, but I'm still learning how to shear. Right now she is just my petting zoo bunny. Everybody loves Waffles.
Rebecca Cox love to hear about it once you start shearing waffles
You forgot to mention that as a real farmer, you also spend entire days fighting slimes in the ancient dwarf mines.
I miss the snow, I miss New Hampshire and Vermont....New England is a magical and homely place.
The South is an oven.
Also I play Stardew Valley so much in one month I've logged 100+ hours.
Rainbow Quartz 2.0 same, I’m in Texas now and miss Vermont so much. Dreaming of owning an off grid homestead in Vermont.
I left Ohio for the south 20 years ago and I never want to see snow again 😅 everyone has their own preference for sweating or freezing
Grr how dare you bait me with stardew valley. Everyone knows thats my fave.
Release the quicken makes my day!
I would recommend for anyone interested in farm birds to just start with a small flock
of maybe 5 birds. If you plan the coop right, it won't have to be that big and there are plenty
of design choices to be found on the internet but I would recommend designing a simple coop
based on where in your garden you want it be and the needs it has to meet.
I have chickens who spend most of their time outdoors and pretty much only use the coop
to sleep and lay eggs.
What a great plan! Thank you for that. I now have a couple ideas to work on.
You have done well with Toby. He is very behaved for you and he is still a doll baby. I know. I know. He's a boy but he is still just precious.
I really enjoy how your real life parallels the stardew valley story, you went from a boring office job to a farm!
Your. Dog. Is a BLESSING. I love the frolicking!! So cute! Thanks for this video, it was enlightening!
Between Stardew Valley and Watching your videos, I know what I want to do for the rest of my life. Amazing video!
Thank you!
oof, that gravity falls intro soundtrack... it always fascinates me how it fits into any kind of video...
It might be the greatest song ever.
I LOVE the footage of the ducks diving into the water bowls. I can't wait for spring and the pond on their behalf.
I love the stardew valley song remixes you put in! I just love the calming music you put and watch ducks be ducks.
This is such a cool video! I Love seeing and hearing other peoples experiences and thoughts.
Haha, really neat to have a video comparing farming to Stardew, I'm sure ConcernedApe will love it!
I love the rhythm of my homestead ❤️. Honestly, I’ve never played a farming video....lol
That scythe is killer! Never dulls!
I have an obsession with wanting to start my own small farm, and much of that is due to my obsession with Stardew. Thanks so much for posting this! Super informative and Toby is so adorable!
2:51 This background music sounds awefully lot like Parappa The Rapper's Mooselini car rap xD
Also around 5:20 Mario Kart Rainbow Road.
A very nice selection of music!
hmmmm...you have very good ears.
There's the Gravity Falls opening song around 8:37 too!
Me a Texan: oh Vermont is so beautiful I wish I lived there...
Gold Shaw Farm: -8 degrees
😱😱
Ya get used to it.
Escape the heat but be prepared to shovel snow all winter and summer doesn't start until April, if that.
Ha! We still have snow most Aprils. Summer doesn't start until June.
I have no clue why UA-cam suggested me your video as I watch mainly science and music videos but I love your channel and can't stop watching now. Thanks for the great videos.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching.
Stardew valley= everything set out and going right ready for a good harvest
Then you come outside and hear crows...
Someone didn't put down their scarecrows properly lol
Digging the Gravity Falls tune 👌boy has the weather been weird this winter. Really cold and snowy, heats back up to melt a little bit, then really cold again. Hello from a small farm town in Michigan!
Hey there!
Gold Shaw Farm hello! Hope y’all have a great day! It’s a bit warmer here today in Merrill, Mi @ 29degrees, my fiancé’s chickens still don’t want to come outside tho haha
Thx🙋♀️
Man this touched my hermit Stardew/Harvest Moon loving heart
I feel you Morgan. I used to play a lot of video games. It can take up so much time. I'm not saying it doesn't have any value, but I feel like it's been a lot of time wasted.
Green Dream Project it is wasted time. I spend 10 years doing it and totally neglected real social interactions. Now I stopped using computers almost 100% and am preparing to start my own farm
@@4philipp that is fantastic! We still use computers, but I've drastically cut down on game playing. We're currently making a life for ourselves living off-grid.
5:10 what a cute version of the Mario Kart 64 Rainbow road theme... God I played that game so much as a kid 💕
great video, duck eggs!! my girls are on strike, wishing this weather would break so might encourage them to start laying again.
NEITHER DOES THE CAT!!!! CATS WARM WOOD STOVE!!!
Ha ha...true!
Big foot tracks, oh my.
You are a great guy...glad you left the big town
Love love watching your videos. So calming watching your animals. Thanks.
Excellent editing skill on your videos. Seriously, just excellent.
This was fun ...great vlog
Thank you!
You might want to consider planting rhubarb, chives, Egyptian onions, and asparagus this year. They’re all great perennial crops.
How did I miss this one? I thought I’d watched all of your videos. This was randomly snuck in.
5:00) BRUH Thats the MK64 rainbow theme! I love that touch
-
8:44) And the Gravity falls theme you madman 🔥💚
can you show us the inside of the goose house sometime?, its so dark and mysterious in there, id love a quick look :D
seeing their bedding, water and so on :3
thoughtfully responded to, while honest...good video on this ....
This looks magical
Wow people are crazy if that what they think.
Yeah, I don't understand why anybody would think they were even close.
yes some very unrealistic thinking ..--...
It would be like if people thought Minecraft is a life-like survival simulator.
They do exist, though.
Of the many things that could be said about a person I gotta say you are trying very hard to achieve your goals.
All your animals are so cute! I'd struggle with the emotional attachment too!
Exactly the video I was looking for, thank you!
Working farming jobs and loving Stardew I cant help but agree , another large similarity is having help can make a farm feel like everything is going by so much quicker in terms of essential daily tasks.
love the rainbow road music!
I’m so in love with that dog!
Getting stardew was awesome when I had to rehome a bunch of my chickens. Definitely raising anything is harder than it tends to be in a game but I have to say stardew does remind me sometimes to enjoy the routine and make sure to share what I get with people I love :D
Cool video. I could never sit down and play those farm games....
I just found a farmer that makes UA-cam's video. COOL!
I loved the video, thank you so much for taking time to share so much information even with so little time to do so! ♡
Really interesting parallel b/w the real thing and the game. I liked it. You are very good at it.
well i have seen you going from a soggy city man to a hulking muscle beast duck farmer now at the farm!!!..just ask your wife!....LOL...
.ps. how do your ducks eggs not freeze at that temps???? mine did..offal!...im glad to see your chick trio are much happier now....very glad....do let us know when you get your first egg!!!!
I try to pull the eggs very quickly...like within an hour or two. Sometimes I miss. Those end up going to Toby.
I fucking love the 8-bit Orion at the end. You've got a new subscriber.
Ha ha ha...you’re the first person to pick up on that one.
This was so interesting. Hoping lots of success in your farming venture ♥️
The Gravity Falls theme instantly earned this video a like!
Glad you enjoyed!
It was a pleasant surprise when it popped up, I haven't heard it in a while
Just want to say, your dog is so adorable!!!
i was expecting this to be corny comedy but it was actually so genuine! happy it was the latter :)
Wow! Toby's getting big!
Hi..... Thank you for sharing your video homestead 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 🎥👍👍👍
I’ve been obsessively playing Stardew Valley lately lmao (totally unrelated to this channel) so this is super timely haha! I also noticed the music in the background (Rainbow Road? Gravity Falls Theme?)
Are there any other video games, cartoons, comics that you’ve read before you started your farm? I know you have limited time now with the farm, but are there any that you want to start eventually?
I play video games all the time like farming simulator but i also volunteer at a few farms and i have no idea d that every day also love ur vid keep up the good work
I knew I wanted to have a farm before Stardew Valley, but since it's still so far away for me the game helps me stay motivated to get to my dream !
You make it look easy!
This is such a great video idea! Loved it!
