I used to be a regular visitor to the Panorama City Santa's Reindeer wagon as a kid. Of course, Toys R Us was a Wonderland as a youth, you felt lucky to see everything in there when you could visit....even up to the 2000's with my daughter. Yes, the Large Golf Ball at the Van Nuys Airport Muni 3 par course was a Fountain ! A damn crime what continues to happen in this once beautiful area. Shameful and a blight on all the great memories.
Its sad how things have degenerated in the Valley. There is so much history there and it should be taken care of. Thanks for sharing the awesome stories about your parents!
Valley series videos are my favorite! As a former LA/San Diego kid, always brings the feels everytime...RIP Kurts Dad, sounds like an amazing human being and family man! 🙏🏼 That traffic red light photo re-enactment was hilarious and the red rose panties story had me rolling! 😂 Happy Thanksgiving Kurt and Crucial family 👻🦃💙
I usually watch your videos on my Xbox so I can't like any videos but after that 7-11 story 😂 I had to jump on my phone and like and subscribe. Man that was funny
Dude Kurt I’m dying laughing on the floor with the rose story. Holy smokes that’s funny. Just picturing your grandmas reaction when she realized what it was. Damn that’s funny
Man this series is one of my favorites and some of those buildings should be revamped to me the architecture is so cool and unique. You have no idea of what those stories about your dad do for us that grew up without a father...........not only is He a HERO to you, but to US as well...........what a great MAN your dad was.........
Your dad stories always warm the heart. I was a dad once and can only hope I’ll be remembered with such fondness. We’d do any for our kids, won’t we? That golf ball was DEFINITELY a fountain. I knew it well. About 13 years ago my daughter had her appendix removed at Valley Presbyterian on Vanowen. We lived in West Hills and the morning after her surgery I went to that Toy R Us on Sherman Way to buy her something to lift her spirits…..I remember buying just about every Polly Pockets toy on the shelves ……pretty much to make myself feel better. Great memories always.
I appreciate every story you tell of your dad. Lost mine this past June and I know the feeling. I know I can never go to Santa Monica and Malibu beach without thinking of my pops. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and thanks for the holiday treat Kurt.
Great video! You should do more videos like this of just driving around just talking about random things. I laughed a few times when you spoke about your dad because I've had similar stories like that also LOL. Do more videos like this in the future.
9:36 I used to pass by Valley Plaza on the Metro Local Bus Line 230 going up and down Laurel Canyon Blvd when I went to North Valley Occupational Center in San Fernando on the west side of the 5 freeway on Rinaldi Blvd.
My summer highlight in the valley was the Van Nuys air show. I lived west of Woodley, south of Parthinia, and north of Roscoe, and east of Havenhurst. I would spend my whole Friday out there on Chase st. next to the SOD fields and watch the military jets fly in for the weekend static display. Then on Monday, on Vanowen to watch them take off...good memories.
As a kid in 1968 I attended the Van Nuys air show with my family. Wow, what a fun event that was. And we visited the show every year thru the 1970s. I wish they would bring back the air show, but I doubt that will ever happen.
I lived all over the Valley between 1982 and 2007. Whenever if drive over the hill from the Westside, I have a flood of memories come over me. Here's a few locations that some of you may remember. 1. 20 Grand Palace - The coolest video arcade in the early 80's. Right behind the Ralph's on Ventura and Winnetka. 2. Devonshire Downs - Now a parking lot on CSUN campus. They used to have Demolition Derbys and Car Racing there on the weekends. 3. Danish American Farms in Panorama City. This was the best butcher shop, deli and bakery anywhere....ever. Fatastic customer service and the quality of the food was great and the prices were very reasonable. 4. Sepulveda Drive In Theater, near Sepulveda and Burbank Blvd. Cheap Movies and good pizza. 5. Perry's Pizza in the Galleria. Made famous in the movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Decent Pizza, cute girls and it was next to Mayhem Arcade across from the Movie Theater. 6. Pecos Bills. A tiny food stand in Studio City/Toluca Lake. They sold "Okie" style pulled pork sandwiches the were delicious and on the weekend you could buy spare ribs until they ran out, which was always. So good. 7. The O.G. Vans store on Topanga Canyon Rd. Huge A framed building with "Off the Wall" painted on the Blue Roof. 8. My old house. 5712 McDonie Woodland Hills, 91367. Top of the hill. Great view of the Valley. Fun to ride down on a bike. Easy walk to all three of my schools. Oso Elementary, Parkman Jr. High, Taft H.S. Those are a few of my favorite places in the S.F. Valley.
I love these videos i grew up in the valley too! So alot does ring a bell some doesn't but i love seeing the before and afters /valley relics too. I'm so glad you continue to make these awesome videos and share personal life experiences. you definitely hit home with your dad stories and passing of him. I lost my mom four years ago and have a lot of memories in the sfv. You are awesome keep these videos coming! 🙌🥰✨ And may both our parents rest in peace. 🙏🕊️
Indeed Kurt !! That big golf ball at Billingsley golf coarse did have water coming off the top of it ...I walked past coming from 7th grade at Mulholland Jr. high in 1977 ..I lived in an apt with mom on Vanowen & Valjean ..... Saw the Goodyear blimp land at V.N. airport also one day (was all excited I was !) ..... And used to go checkout the Toys R Us alot also on Woodley & Sherman Way .... Was in business for many decades, much longer than most of the other locations.. .... Also worked at the Mobile gas station across the street from the 7-11 you mention on Reseda & Burbank ... Back when it was a actuall service station with service bays ..... Timeline was when the" R" rated cartoon "Heavy Metal" came out, as I took the parts driver girl from Clarks Autp Parts (next to Mobile station at the time) to see it. ... P.S. respect & love for your Pops
Another great video Kurt, thanks for sharing the memories. I was also a valley kid. There is a photo of the golf ball fountain online which was taken in 1992 for the Daily News. It did exist!
These are my favorite videos. Thank you for sharing the memories of your dad. I lost mine too and the Valley is full of special places for me. We lived down the street from Valley Plaza and it’s so sad to see it like that. My boyfriend (now husband) took me to Auditory Odyssey. Loved that store💜
Yes. There was water coming out of that golf ball fountain. And across the street, that airport used to be called Beechcraft West. Either that airport, or there was one in the general area where the Anheiser Busch factor was. My uncle was an airplane mechanic for planes there
How are you doing? I just wanted to let you know that I love your videos and make me learn more of the SFV since I moved to the area back in 2010 after my ex passed away. I was going to tell you that the Toys R Us building was not demolished but I did see them covering the old entrance/exit and moved the entrance to the new Vallarta to the side where it is now but I remember they never demolished the building.
“Points” I haven’t heard that term since the eighties. As a kid and I don’t know why but we referred to K Mart as Tram K and in that shopping center was a pic n save which we referred to as pick your nose and save it. Thanks for the video.
I subscribed to your videos. I am enjoying watching and reminiscing. You shared the same memories of your DAD just like I remember mine. No matter what time it was, my hero was always there. 👍
Red roses story! My step-dad bought some of these for my mom once as an apology for one of his stupid actions. My mom was totally unimpressed and gave them to my younger sisters to play with. Later, to my mom's horror, they came out of their room later playing with red panties.
I have alot of memories of Ames department store at a plaza in Maryland my grandmother use to buy me GJ joes at 80s and early 90s the building is still there but its something else now
I think we had the same dad. My dad gave me a AAA card.the day I got my license. He never wanted me to be stranded.....but he always beat AAA getting to me. He has a pocket knife that fixed EVERYTHING. The golf ball was in fact a fountain.
Kurt, There was a time that there was a pizza joint directly across from ToysRUs on the north side of Sherman Way called "Pedro's Famous Pizza and Pizza." I kid you not. We saved a menu for a long time but I lost it. They had a great "Mexican pizza" with Jalapenos.
I grew up in the San Fernando valley I lived in Canoga park went to Reseda high went to Sutter Jr high. Born and raised it sure isn't the same. I also lived across the street from st. Joseph the worker.
There’s photos of me and my brothers in a box somewhere with the Panorama City Santa and Reindeer from the 70s. Sherman WY and Woolley Pitts Performance go karts
confirm that golf ball was a water fountain, sorry about your Dad, it was nice you got to talk to your Dad one last time, the Rose was a pretty funny story, wondering what your grandma was thinking... I really enjoy your videos... Happy Holidays Merry Christmas Kurt.. d-_-b
Ok good. I have not totally lost my mind. Thank you, I really miss my dad. Thank you so much for watching my videos and for all the support. Merry Christmas and happy holidays.
Been wondering when you were going to get around to Valley Relics. It's a lot of fun. Before COVID they had a vintage BMX show and swap meet there. It hasn't returned but keep and eye out in case it does. People bring the most amazing old BMX biked.
When I lived on the corner of Rhea and Keswick between 1981 and 1983, it was a Pup 'N Taco. That car wash sign looks exactly the same, except I think maybe the frame was brown then.
I used to work at Bush's Stationers in Burbank, and I would drive around delivering office supplies in the area. Even then, Valley Plaza was severely dated, and was becoming run down. The Sears store was still operating but was definitely past its prime from the days when it was the only Sears in the SFV. I remember reindeer in cages at Panorama City around the late 50s and early 60s. They had names on the cages and I was convinced that those were the actual reindeer owned by Santa Claus. The hospital at Victory and Coldwater was where I was born in 1954 (a charter school now).

The little taco stand on Vanowen/Havenhurst used to be a hamburger place called "Lumber Jack" the food was good. One day, there was a homicide. It was a partnership gone bad. One partner killed the other. The owner of the burger place was so freaked out about her good/local customers, she almost immediately sold it and was gone. The same happened to the yellow barn behind St Bridgets on Sherman way. It was a couple, things didn't work out and the store burned to the ground. I saw it online. It lists the fire as 1990.
love these vids !! every time i see ur vids it reminds me of Terminator 2 or Thrasin`.. one of my 2 all time fav movies, + when u mention valley..cannot not think of Corey Webster.. lol right valley boy?
My phone number used to be connected with the Van Nuys airport. I had pilots calling me at 5 am for weather conditions.....it is real dark...don't crash buddy.
The red rose panty story. LMAO as once I was in a convenience store, either in Van Nuys or NoHo, and saw a cute long-stem rose, made of silk or ??? in a 2-inch glass tube. I thought it was cute and it was only a buck or two so I bought it for my sweetheart. Come to find out, it was a crack pipe disguised as something else so they could legally sell it.
When you were telling your story in front of the Whole Foods I thought you were stopped at a red light. It seemed as though the red light took forever.
The red light photo face story really cracked me up! hahaha!!
Nothing like when 80s life uploads a new Valley video 🔥
Yes born and raised in the SFV and still here, that was a working golf ball water fountain in that golf course at one time that is correct 👍🏽 ❤
I used to be a regular visitor to the Panorama City Santa's Reindeer wagon as a kid.
Of course, Toys R Us was a Wonderland as a youth, you felt lucky to see everything in there when you could visit....even up to the 2000's with my daughter.

Fell in love with early 90’s LA through movies. What an era
The Valley has been my home since 1972. Valley Relics has the "Nudie" Pontiac Grandville with the Bull Horns. Keep on Truckin'
Another great video Kurt, thanks for sharing the memories. I was also a valley kid. There is a photo of the golf ball fountain online which was taken in 1992 for the Daily News. It did exist!
Yes, it was a fountain at the golf course!!! I used to live close to the golf course
Things from my early years are changing here too. Your dad sounds like a great father.
The A-Frame building at Reseda and Saticoy was a Pup n Taco. It was one of my family take outs in the 1970's.
My family favorite too.
Sorry about your father. My father passed in 1991. Miss him 😢

Yep! Golf ball used to be a fountain. I seem to remember the water being dyed blue, too.
How are you doing? I just wanted to let you know that I love your videos and make me learn more of the SFV since I moved to the area back in 2010 after my ex passed away.

Yes! I remember the golf ball fountain, too. ⛳️
Two valley places I miss are Casa Di Pizza in the Tampa shopping center, and Sir George's Smorgasbord on Van Nuys blvd.
I feel for you about the date with your dad, December 13th is always tough for me as well my dad passed 31 years ago.
Golf ball fountain confirmed!💛 The panty rose story...classic. I actually did lol.
wow, thanks for sharing.
I can remember going as a little guy (50yrs. Ago) ALSO going to see Rudolf in that very spot!
Oh the money I spent in that Toys R Us on Sherman way 😢 Used to frequent the 7/11 next to it too
Red roses story! My step-dad bought some of these for my mom once as an apology for one of his stupid actions. My mom was totally unimpressed and gave them to my younger sisters to play with. Later, to my mom's horror, they came out of their room later playing with red panties.
HAHAHA. I can't believe I'm not the only one with a story about the panty rose. haha
I have alot of memories of Ames department store at a plaza in Maryland my grandmother use to buy me GJ joes at 80s and early 90s the building is still there but its something else now

Kurt,
There was a time that there was a pizza joint directly across from ToysRUs on the north side of Sherman Way called "Pedro's Famous Pizza and Pizza." I kid you not. We saved a menu for a long time but I lost it. They had a great "Mexican pizza" with Jalapenos.
Pup-n-Taco was the “original” business in the food stand next to the Car Wash on Saticoy and Reseda.
that was my toys r us growing up
Cheers to your Pops.
🌹😂 thank you
I grew up in the San Fernando valley I lived in Canoga park went to Reseda high went to Sutter Jr high. Born and raised it sure isn't the same. I also lived across the street from st. Joseph the worker.
Sequoia Jr high and Reseda high for me.
Class of 89 Reseda high
I worked at that 7-11 in Tarzana when it was first built in the mid 80s.
There’s photos of me and my brothers in a box somewhere with the Panorama City Santa and Reindeer from the 70s. Sherman WY and Woolley Pitts Performance go karts
The panty rose story takes the best memories-award 🎉
confirm that golf ball was a water fountain, sorry about your Dad, it was nice you got to talk to your Dad one last time, the Rose was a pretty funny story, wondering what your grandma was thinking... I really enjoy your videos... Happy Holidays Merry Christmas Kurt.. d-_-b
Ok good. I have not totally lost my mind. Thank you, I really miss my dad. Thank you so much for watching my videos and for all the support. Merry Christmas and happy holidays.
818 baby born and raised in Arleta, California lived at 9820 penny st been living in San Antonio Tx 17yrs from the San Fernando valley JFK Cougars.
Been wondering when you were going to get around to Valley Relics. It's a lot of fun. Before COVID they had a vintage BMX show and swap meet there. It hasn't returned but keep and eye out in case it does. People bring the most amazing old BMX biked.
Yes, Kurt needs to do a Valley Relics video.
laurel plaza is a ghost town back in the 80s it was bumpin
When I lived on the corner of Rhea and Keswick between 1981 and 1983, it was a Pup 'N Taco. That car wash sign looks exactly the same, except I think maybe the frame was brown then.
I used to work at Bush's Stationers in Burbank, and I would drive around delivering office supplies in the area. They had a store at Valley Plaza, so I shuttled merchandise back and forth between the stores in the mid 1970s (also one on Lankershim in North Hollywood).
Short and not as in-depth as other Memories videos...but I thank you for making me laugh at the end.
I think you're right about the Golf ball water fountain. It used to be a water hazard if I remember right. I used to live on the other side of the airport off of Roscoe and Haskell. I wonder if the go cart track is still next to the airport. That go cart track was on an episode of Blind Date
Rip to pops 🙏🏿
Damn we are approaching the 30th anniversary of the Northridge quake. RIP to Kurts Dad.
That’s a great story about the rose/panties…
I remember going to furrs Buffett as a kid next to that Kmart
The golf ball was definitely a fountain.
Fun fact: before that was a Whole Foods, that market used to be called Westward Ho!
.
As I can see from Google Earth, the parking lot of the Valley Plaza movie theater appears to be THE spot in So Cal to do donuts and burnouts.
Started working at that wholefoods in 07. Would skate venture all day and night
Remember the what use to be the old smith’s food market on Woolley and San Fernando mission Blvd.
This is the first video of yours I've seen. I really hope you've covered the Chatsworth Park train tunnels, the Van Alden caves, & the bat caves.
Next time you need to gap your points in a pinch, use a matchbook cover 😀. Great videos.
When you were telling your story in front of the Whole Foods I thought you were stopped at a red light. It seemed as though the red light took forever.
