I imagine there are a lot of unsold gen4-powered bikes out there, so maybe Bosch feels under an obligation to the manufacturers to help them sell the unsold 2024 stock at not too much of a discount by making it seem like the Gen5 isn't that much of an upgrade. Once the old stock is sold, they can bring out the software update (more torque & peak power) and top-tube screen. That's just my wild guess! Will be interesting to see what discounts are available for 2024 stock come Black Friday weekend, which is about 7 weeks away.

Kudos to Bosch for being the grownup in the room and prioritizing real world rider benefits like a quieter ride, more refined response, lighter weight, more range, and easier fitment for bike makers. Their warranty/tech support and dealer network is already world class. Can’t wait to upgrade!

Very true in all regards but power is power and will dictate the market whether or not it's needed IMO. DJI is not a DIRECT threat at this moment because it's only available on one bike.

  •  4 дні тому +3

Deep down, even if we do not admit it, we have always wanted stronger motors with the biggest and the lightest batteries possible, and here it is eventually with the DJI motor...only time will tell how much reliable it is, and for me, I would like to see it on a enduro bike. On the other hand, it is also a common secret that the majority of the riders worldwide, prefer the Bosch motor to the rest of the known motor Brands, and more and more bike Brands tend to equip their new bikes with the Bosch. And if the rumours are true with the software update raising torque to 3 digits, along with the solution of the rattle, then it is the Bosch alone against the DJI. And finally, I think Pivot is coming out with a new Shuttle LT with the Bosch, along with a new Bullit from Santa Cruz.

More power? That's not on my list of "needs" for a Bosch. Rarely do I feel the need for more power. Riding in Colorado, Washington, California, the need for more power was rarely there. Increased efficiency (range) and quieting the thing down on ratcheting and descending would be my choice

Agreed. And I don't want bicycles to blur the lines of, let alone become, e-motorbikes. We already are fighting an uphill battle against bike haters, and over-powered bikes are stealth dangers to amateur riders who just think "oh, this is great because now I can ride with the cars on the fast roads." IMO a bike that achieves a max speed above say 20-25 mph without pedaling is a motorbike and the machine should be licensed.

It has taken years for Bosch to develop a motor that is quiet yet powerful. Their motors have been fitted to bikes for years and every time a new generation comes out, this renders the previous model inferior. £10k bikes with noisy, jerky transmissions.
Dji came along first time and threw everything they have done and others out water and kicked it into the long grass. Now playing catch up, yet still short of the new Avinox system.
People will claim that they don't need more power, however I'm sure if Bosch had brought out a motor with the same specs or better than Dji, they would all be jumping for joy and raving about it.
Dji nailed it first time around with a proper touch screen built in to the frame, sensors all round to control the power assistance, 120 nm and 1000 watts. With a slim 800 or 600 watt battery that keeps the frame looking better and weight down. They are a market leader with years of experience in the electronics industry, proven reliability and sales.
Bosch have had to make improvements as Dji from nowhere have moved the game on. Simple as that. 👌

Whilst I agree that Bosch will be under pressure to pump the power up but please consider that the DJI Avinox is only available on one bike and it's a very light trail bike. So the Avinox motor is not mainstream at this point like Shimano and Bosch. Brose is prettty much exclusive to Specialized and is being boosted to 95nm etc. So Bosch has time up it's sleeves but most people tend to believe the Gen5 will get a firmware update to boost power. Considering they rebuilt the whole motor I'm sure it was rebuilt to be quiet but to also facilitate more power so I think the writing is on the wall IMO

I don't know why so many people are so focused on power - 30 to 40km rides with over 1000m climbing and I rarely go out of Trail with EMTB as my emergency bail-out.
Me, I have been waiting for slack-arse manufacturers to get their shit sorted first. There is absolutely no excuse for the rubbish we have been served up for years. That motors are not waterproof is a joke.
However, diving into the new motor it is obvious a redesign for not only more sensors to allow granular control and better ability for riders to customise user modes, but along with the changes to kill the rattle is a gear redesign to allow for more power. I understand that putting over 100NM though the G4 causes heat issues and something else they would not discuss - I expect possibly gear stripping issues. The new gears are much stronger, probably for an upgrade to 90NM fairly soon with a further upgrade to 95 or even 100 in a year or so. The bike I tested was not what I am going for, but I just like the feel of the motor and appreciate the 800Wh battery.

Thanks for this good video! it's true that this new DJI motor is next level compared to the others but power without control is useless, personally, I prefer to have less power and a more natural pedaling sensation than a boost in the ass. What is also interesting with DJI, beyond the motor and the data console, is the fast charging of the battery. I have not seen any articles or videos mentioning this point? do the new Bosch batteries have a fast charge?
another point also, the improvement of the noise on the CX, will Bosch review the SX in the same way ?

    • @MBRmagazine
      @MBRmagazine  4 дні тому +1

Thanks! I would imagine the SX will get an update to the internals to get rid of the rattle, but it may take a while knowing Bosch. Bosch is working on a new public fast-charging standard that will bring significantly more rapid charging, but it's due around 2027. It's called Charge2Bike.

Other negatives for the DJI is range per watt hour is lower, and the frame is very stiff and lacks compliance. For me the million dollar question is what motor system will be on the new Gen 4 Levo, as many manufacturers are tied into the Bosch ecosystem, and Specialized will certainly have done their homework on what to upgrade their bikes with, in regards to the motor, battery, display and auto shift integration. As much as everyone wants a MGU type solution, there are good reasons we still have Derailleurs, nothing beats it still, for weight and efficiency.

I think Bosch has taken all factors into consideration for balancing power, ride feeling quality , power delivery, efficiency of battery usage and just as important something that seldom gets mentioned is drive train wear. I have had three full power e-bikes and they all eat through chains and cassettes and front rings. If you are RACING all mountain and enduro e-bikes the power then becomes the most important factor, but for normal all mountain and enduro riding all the motor brands in that 80 - 90NM 600W peak range provide plenty of grunt to ride virtually anything. Yes the higher the power the faster you can get up the climbs BUT you better be prepared and accept the expense of lots of chain replacements / snaps (especially on 12 speed), front ring and cassette replacements. I am a light weight rider and go through these parts constantly (especially 12 speed chains 2 - 3 in a 7-8 month ride season in BC Canada ).
Bosch has looked at all the factors and have stated that to get the best balance of factors is leaving the power at the current level all this. Also there is no need for them to add more power to this motor as they have the extra powered Bosch RACE motor available for those that are RACING or are heavy riders and need to prioritize power over all other factors.
