It’s crazy how a wreck that looks so minor from the outside can be fatal. It’s sad but I have to think that if he had been a bit more thoughtful about his safety equipment this could’ve been prevented. I know it’s completely different but it reminds me of people who race gutted out, high horsepower cars on the street without even having something as simple as a roll bar, let alone a decent cage and a helmet. Some people will get lucky and survive if they wreck, others won’t. The video from 1320 of the fox body mustang (if I remember correctly) crashing at the pad is the example that comes to mind. I just feel bad for this guy’s family and friends. RIP Edit: I just want to add, sprint cars scare the shit out of me lol. I’ve only ever watched them race on dirt though. This guy dies from tapping the wall yet we have guys fly through the air flip and flop as their car explodes into pieces and they walk away. May his soul find the light.
He didn't run a full containment seat. That's actually a pretty hard hit into the wall. With no left side shoulder or head support on a seat, if you get a hit to one side it will throw your body over that way. If I remember correctly, the autopsy said blunt force trauma to the head, but don't quote me on that I don't exactly remember off hand. Which would line, up with the no full containment seat, when he hit he wall pretty hard his head very likely hit also. Also another cause of death could be broken neck. I'd have to go back and look at the report, but I think that was the same cause for Jason Leffler. Also a Hans/head and neck restraint very likely wouldn't have saved either of them. Most head and neck restraints are for forward impact only, some 2 strap restraints like the Hybrid can help in some side to side and a little vertical, but not to the extent of this crash.

I agree with a couple of other comments. I don't believe this was his fatal crash. His fatal crash occurred when he was passing lap cars. This was the first lap. I don't think this is it.
trust me on this one mr. bullwood. mr steele's signature move was to jump three wide and pass 3 or 4 rows of cars. Sport allen tries to enter turn one in the second groove and a car dives underneath him. Sport starts to move up to miss the idiot and contact with mr steele is made. It took me about 30 seconds to run from the flagstand to turn 1, and Mr. Steele was gone when I got there.
I really enjoy dirt track racing it's full of thrills and spills but damn those sprint car racers are risking alot strapping into those tiny V8 powered death traps. RIP Mr. Steele

Bet all twenty fans felt guilty once they found out the guy had died. After all, as the announcer said, they were doing it for them. Not for money, glory, a career or fun, but for them.
I don't think they race for the fans. I think they drive these cars because it is a gas! Thrilling beyond description. Punching the old E ticket, an adrenaline rush like you can't believe. They do it for fun, whether anybody is watching or not.
@Revelian1982 Don't be a turd. Did I say the announcer was lying? Are not I entitled to an opinion? In my opinion, racers race because it's fun. It's a thrill. It's an adrenaline rush. Whether it's 100 people watching or 100,000. Or nobody at all for that matter. I know this because a long time ago I used to be one.
Did he snap his neck we were at the the Texas motor speedway and someone was doing a test hit and he finished drove to his trailer and just died before he got out of his car
Can't believe this caused death. He must have had some kind of safety equipment failure. These guys use HANS devices so I just don't get it. RIP Dave. :-(
he hit roof first so what likely happened is the cage above him collapsed and compressed into the top of his head causing his head to literally impact the wall. Hans wouldn't have done anything in this type of crash.
hi johnny smokestack - john Wang ( see post above ) said that most of these sprint car drivers DON'T use H.A.N.S. devices - After the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr. ,all drivers in NASCAR were forced into wearing these devices - or they don't get in their race car - period - maybe the same thing MUST be mandatory for all Sprint Car Drivers - so this NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN - Always the same thing - $$$$$$$ first - safety second - poor man - pure evil GREED - Human life not as important as the almighty dollar - just fill those seats - so what if a driver dies - ??!!?? - death sells more tickets - SICK AND EVIL - Rest In Peace , Mr. Dave Steele - maybe his death will prompt positive changes - so this NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN - 😔🌹🕊🌈☁
A HANS doesn't do any good in a side impact hit. It is designed to protect for a frontal impact. That's why a window net ( along with a HANS ) is required in SCCA, and NASA also requires a right side net. It's also why a lot of the amature racers I race with are going to full containment seats. ( Not directed at you John, just putting it out there for those who don't know).
Cody Hack: "he hit roof first" NO HE DIDN'T! This was a glancing left side (the bad side) impact @ approximately 75 mph. Here is a DIRECT left side impact @ approximately 155 mph. Why don't you go watch some sprint car videos from the 50's and 60's. There was way more deaths, no safety equipment isn't going to scare people enough to make them go slower if that's what your trying to argue. The racing sure as hell wasn't boring back then either.
@@luckydude29 I suppose your right it's not like football where if you took the pads away they wouldn't crush each other and wind up with concussions and screwed up body's the rest of their life.

suggestion: google a pic of the 33, look at the left rear wheel. You should notice that it is about 10-12 inches deep. From the whiplash from the nose hitting the wall, that wheel was smashed flat against the hub, with zero driver containment on the left side. It's kind of weird to see a winged Sprint Car on asphalt. It's even weirder to see a four wide salute on an asphalt short track.
RIP Mr. Steele.
It's not as rare as you think.
What's so weird about it?
@@T1C45 I guess it is a regional thing but in Upstate NY and PA winged sprint cars are pretty much only ran on dirt ovals. I guess places like Florida or Cali have series that run on asphalt but where I'm from USAC and midgets are the only series you see on asphalt.
@@haiwin224
Yes. You're speaking truth my friend. I live in PA myself and we only have maybe 2 asphalt tracks in the entire state. I've attended Lake Erie Speedway (asphalt) twice because it was free and close to home, otherwise you wouldn't catch me anywhere else besides my local dirt tracks. Eriez Speedway, Raceway 7, and Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, PA. I ran hobby stock for 2 yrs. after moving up from karts. My first race I started on pole (1st) and finished 2nd to last😂. I was only 14 and my dad signed as driver to get me through. We had the same name Jr./Sr. Back in 1989 you weren't allowed to race unless you had a drivers license. No waiver papers like the kids today have. That's why you see 14 yr. olds racing 360 sprints these days. Maybe they were allowed back then but most certainly not in PA.
@@haiwin224
And now that my brain is engaged I agree, it is weird, the wing acts as a brake and puts downforce on the car in the turns when your sideways. But on dirt not asphalt. Have you ever been to Weedsport Speedway up there in NY?

You are very likely correct ?
I haven't followed Nascar since back when they were shown on ABC's Wide World of Sports on Saturdays, when I was a kid !
I was a Crew Chief for a friend, back in the day, starting with Bombers, thru Modifieds, who quite coincidentally carried the 03 on our cars !
Anyway, was witness to many, " Good Ole Boys ", episodes of cheating, one way or another.
( Aluminum intakes, etc.)
When the mag test came out, and a pass was given, it just got old for me !
Plus it too was about local popularity and getting sponsored, no matter how crooked !
And guess I just figured it just increased, exponentially the further you went ?
When all I really wanted to say in my comment, was it doesn't take much to kill you, and how Earnhardt's death shocked everyone, Fan or not !
Pardon me for running on !

Crazy to think that this is the Freedom Factory now!! Rip
I thought i was tripping at first, I was tryna figure that out, damn
Wow! Didn't look that bad. Something unusual must have happened. Failed safety gear or something. Sad day. Great racer gone too soon. The only thing I can say is, and I know it's cliche but it's still true, he was doing something he loved. He's probably up there wishing if it had to happen why couldn't it happen at the end of the race instead of the start.
Where was this at?
Desoto Raceway, now known as The Freedom Factory

I'm sorry to interrupt you, Elizabeth. If you still even remember that name.
But I'm afraid you've been misinformed.
You are not here to receive a gift. Nor, have you been called here by the individual you assume. Although, you have indeed been called.
You have all been called here. Into a labyrinth of sounds and smells, misdirection and misfortune.
A labyrinth with no exit. A maze with no prize. You don't even realize that you are trapped. Your lust of blood has driven you in endless circles. Chasing the cries of children in some unseen chamber, always seeming so near.
But, you will never find them. None of you will.
This is where your story ends.
And to you, my brave volunteer, who somehow found this job listing not intended for you. Although, there was a way out planned for you, I have a feeling that's not what you want. I have a feeling that you are right where you want to be.
I am remaining as well. I am nearby.
This place will not be remembered and the memory of everything that started this, can finally begin to fade away. As the agony of every tragedy should.
And to you monsters trapped in the corridors. Be still. And give up your spirits.
They don't belong to you.
As for most of you, I believe there is peace and perhaps, warm, waiting for you after the smoke clears.
Although, for one of you, the darkest pit of Hell has opened to swallow you whole. So, don't keep the Devil waiting, friend.
My daughter, if you can hear me, I knew you would return as well. It's in your nature to protect the innocent. I'm sorry that on that day, the day you were shut out and left to die, no one was there to lift you up in their arms, the way you lifted others into yours.
And then, what became of you, I should have known, you wouldn't be content to disappear. Not my daughter. I couldn't save you then.
So, let me save you now. It's time to rest, for you, and for those you have carried in your arms...
This ends.
For all of us.
End Communication.

Just like Dale Sr, or any of us, when it’s your time, it’s your time.

*Freedom Factory back in the day*

Bet all twenty fans felt guilty once they found out the guy had died. After all, as the announcer said, they were doing it for them. Not for money, glory, a career or fun, but for them.

Have no idea how he survived it, but he lived and raced for years afterwards. ua-cam.com/video/GkN38ayoSTk/v-deo.html. There should be no seat belts or any safety equipment in racing. Then there wouldn't be many crashes. It would be pretty boring though.
Why don't you go watch some sprint car videos from the 50's and 60's. There was way more deaths, no safety equipment isn't going to scare people enough to make them go slower if that's what your trying to argue. The racing sure as hell wasn't boring back then either.

Wait....we're talking about the black car, right?? It looked like he barely touched the wall. Sure he didn't have a med issue after being spun out just before the wall??
suggestion: google a pic of the 33, look at the left rear wheel. You should notice that it is about 10-12 inches deep. From the whiplash from the nose hitting the wall, that wheel was smashed flat against the hub, with zero driver containment on the left side. His medical issue came from helmet contact with steel reinforced concrete.
