- Der See Jökulsárlón (deutsch „Gletscherflusslagune“) ist der bekannteste und größte einer Reihe von Gletscherseen in Island. Er liegt am Südrand des Vatnajökull zwischen dem Skaftafell-Nationalpark und Höfn. Mit 248 Metern ist er der tiefste See Islands. Seine Fläche beträgt etwa 18 km².
Der Jökulsárlón wird durch die auf ihm treibenden Eisberge charakterisiert, die eine Höhe von bis zu 15 Meter erreichen. Sie lösen sich von der Gletscherzunge des Breiðamerkurjökull ab.
Die meisten Eisberge drehen sich im Laufe ihrer Existenz mehrfach und das Wasser formt dann tiefe Einschnitte und Gräben im Eis. Manchmal sind auch Tore und Höhlen zu sehen. Bei einer Bootstour auf dem Jökulsárlón wurde ich zufällig Zeuge des Kenterns eines solchen Eisberges.

For years I've read of the dangers of blue icebergs to shipping in the early days of the 20th century.This is the first one I've seen.They would be in invisible after dark or in low light.
Don't think so. The ice isn't blue. It absorbs some light and reflects blue. Kind of like the sky. I think the blue is gone at night and the berg is no less visible.
That deep blue is so beautiful! Does anyone else want a chunk of it to see what it tastes like?

@@Pisiprismus interestingly, no. The salinity is pushed out as the ice forms and compacts, so blue ice (multiyear) will be pure water, not salty at all :-)

It is located on the southern edge of Vatnajökull between the Skaftafell National Park and Höfn. At 248 meters, it is the deepest lake in Iceland. Its area is about 18 km².
The Jökulsárlón is characterized by the icebergs floating on it, reaching a height of up to 15 meters. They detach themselves from the glacier tongue of Breiðamerkurjökull. Most icebergs rotate in the course of their existence several times and the water then forms deep cuts and ditches in the ice. Sometimes there are also gates and caves. During a boat trip on the Jökulsárlón I happened to witness the capsizing of such an iceberg.

To be honest that's the opposite of wonderful. Does nobody smell the irony in this? Glaciers are melting because we humans cause global warming. And what do these people do? They travel around the world and swarm the site with boats, burning more fossil fuel and causing more global warming. That's like climbing up the pole of a warning sign that says it's dangerous to climb.
This kind of footage should be made by a few scientists and professional photographers. But apparently it's a tourist attraction and troves of regular folk are taking amateur pictures. Heck, that one woman can't stop talking about her son's birthday and that this was his present ...

One does have to wonder where the blue comes from. I've always thought that "ice blue" was a very pale blue but these icebergs have deep vibrant blues in them.
Snow is compressed into ice as it is forced between mountains in valleys becoming glaciers.
The ice is further compressed by the weight behind it as it moves along the valleys.
As the ice is compressed the air is forced out, the less air, the bluer the ice looks.

@@kirbywaite1586 Ice only appears blue when it is sufficiently consolidated that bubbles do not interfere with the passage of light. Without the scattering effect of air bubbles, light can penetrate ice undisturbed. In ice, the absorption of light at the red end of the spectrum is six times greater than at the blue end.

I think it is partly due to the tyndall- effect (similar to reyligh scattering, that makes sky blue), and partly due to the minerals dissolved in the water from the so called "rock flour" produced in the erotion, since you see liquid water in creeks in mountains often have this blue color as well. I suspect copper ions make this color, but also chromium(II) ions make this color. Oxygen could also play a role, as liquid oxygen (especialy ozone) is blue. I also suspect that the high amount of ions in the water will cause the ice to melt, causing microscopic pockets of higher density liquid water, further scattering the light and driving the tyndall-effect. lastly, glaciers can sometimes get a bit alkaline pH-level. These are my hypothesies anyways. according to wikipedia in the site "Blue Ice", the O-H- bonds in water absorbs the red light, so it might just be the thickness and lack uf impurities that causes it to appear so blue.

In the article this video was attached to, it said that icebergs can flip with the force of an atomic bomb and can cause tsunamis etc. Knowing this, don't you think it was a bit reckless to be in the vicinity of such a force now nature?
