65-72MPH Is usually the max on Swedish motorways, but hardly anyone drives under 80, and many go 90, and i've never been or seen anyone be fined for doing so.
Wrong, the speedlimits on swedish motorways is 110 and 120 km/h in one part of Sweden. 105 km/h = 65 mph 110 km/h = 68 mph 113 km/h = 70 mph 120 km/h = 75 mph
One reason that prevents this from happening are unqualified idiots with drivers licenses, because all it takes is a simple exam. Another reason is a ton of unworthy cars on a road, since in most states there arent safety inspections, but rather emission testings only.
Seriously, those who exceed speed limits would not be stopped from doing so by a device in their car. You can easily deactivate such things. Car manufacturers were right when they said it is a bullshit idea.
I know that there is a 'gentlemens agreement' between German car manufacturers. The cars are limited to 250 km/h by software, but most customers remove it. Speed limits on motorways are just anachronistic in most cases. Nowadays you can equip cars with tons of assistans which help avoiding accidents. We should rather focus on how to make these cheaper and think about making them obligatory.
To be honest, I think motorways shouldn't have speed limits or, if they're going to have speed limits, it should be 100 mph. For someone who drives long distances on motorways, like me, 70 is bollocks and bullshit.
Germans on some places have no speed limits , and very few people die on Autobahns , all because Germans are disciplined - they drive in the middle of lane , always look before change lane and use their indicators . In my country many drive in middle of road , never use seatbelts , low beams , indicators , stop sighns , overtake @ doble white line , speak on phone , some kid is alwast between front seats , ... This is why many die , not spead .
@RedRoosterRoad While no police officer would say that 85 is ok, I doubt you would ever be pulled over for travelling at that speed - unless you were driving dangerously or if the conditions were bad.
Lorries aren't meant to go fast. But limiting is cars is stupid. I also think that on large roads maybe on odd sections in the UK (only by 10-20mph) but definitely in larger countries like America where the roads are longer and bigger, it should be unrestricted like the autobahn in areas with strict rules on reckless and irrational driving.
Is it stupid? Imagine all the resources you could save be not having speed cameras and the likes. Why police an offense if you could stop people committing the offense in the first place.
29 years later and nothing has come of this. I think that shows the lack of support for this idea. Limiting professional drivers is ethically okay, but limiting people's personal transport is just wrong. Thankfully politicians seem to understand this. Lets hope that doesn't change.
@RedRoosterRoad dont forget thats 21 years ago when you could say golly wog wheres a pc is every where and you cant say golly wog u get pulled over now for doing 75 or for driving a car over 13 years old doing just that
the limit in france depends on the conditions and they do police their roads , radar detecting devices to high light speed traps and speed cameras are also illegal ,bon voyageGB railer !
I remember when we could still do 65/70 mph in a truck in the uk without any hassle from the boys in blue, mind you, they accepted lorry drivers as professional drivers with a greater degree of skill, just like themselves. We got more done in a day therefore needed less trucks on the road. And folk tell me governments are serious about reducing emissions? My arse. Faster trucks = less trucks needed, less trucks = less emissions. But clearly I’m too stupid, a far more intelligent government bod needs to work it out. Still, with the poor standard of truck driving these days, it would be silly to remove speed limiters now.
From a safety perspective I think the speed limit on motorways could probably be raised in some sections depending on conditions. However, the aerodynamic drag presented to all vehicles increases sharply when travelling at speeds over 60mph. Cars are powerful enough to do these speed, but climate change is a very real problem. Many people treat the speed limit like a recommendation so encouraging people to travel at higher speeds and therefor burn significantly larger quantities of petrol seems backwards to me. I think it would make more sense for people who enjoy driving to own one car for travelling and one car for taking to the track.
Seeing a speed limiter manufactured by Lucas is the most terrifying thing I ever saw

I like the guy from Porsche trying to claim it is a 'small minority' of Porsche drivers who would consider breaking the speed limit.
"Speed never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary that's what gets you." - Classic Jeremy.
The speed limit in France is 130kph, 80mph, about time we upped ours!
GBRailer 110kph southeast

'in most states..' where are you??
Look at all the old equipment!!
Not sure this feature would have made it onto new Top Gear...
This is Top Gear from the 1990’s. These features are more universal. Average motorists can relate to them.
Like I always say, speed doesn't kill, stopping does.
Seriously, those who exceed speed limits would not be stopped from doing so by a device in their car. You can easily deactivate such things. Car manufacturers were right when they said it is a bullshit idea.
You just know this idiotic concept was cooked up by a committee of government bureaucrats.
icwav nearly all new cars have this today but the limits are set above 100. You'd have to reprogram the computer to remove it.

With Smart motorways I think this is something that should be looked at as the limit can be varied depending on the conditions of the road.
Why? There is no need to do over 70mph.
@@Jack.Mead96 There definitely is. 70mph is far too slow 150kph should be the new national speed limit.
@@adamtheginger5882 What is the need. Just leave earlier. Also what is a KPH?!
Hi, yes, I will have that Porsche 911 turbo please. What's that you say? It only does 80 mph
What? At 4:52? That's not a 911 Turbo. It's a 928.
How can you confuse a 911 with a 928?
'Dino Mercurio', lol. Sounds like something out of Toast of London.
1:47 Speed limiters on hgv have been compulsory since 1988.
I often cruise around 80mph. My car is a 1996, the actual speed is about 71-72mph according to satellite navigation.

exept when germans leave germany....
I have checked it with GPS, it is perhaps 10mph optimistic at high speed. Though this is normal to account for tyre wear.
When Clarkson and Co left, Top Gear should've gone back to being like this at 8.30 on Thursday nights on BBC2.
THE 928S, Thats the best number plate ever :D, PEN15 is still my fave plate :P
4:52 I like that Porsche 928’s number plate. THE 928S. Kinda self explanatory.
@RedRoosterRoad While no police officer would say that 85 is ok, I doubt you would ever be pulled over for travelling at that speed - unless you were driving dangerously or if the conditions were bad.
the worst comb over EVER

56 mph for ''lorries'' (what a stupid british word anyway) is too slow, 65 mph (105 km/h) seems to be right for trucks.
29 years later and nothing has come of this. I think that shows the lack of support for this idea. Limiting professional drivers is ethically okay, but limiting people's personal transport is just wrong. Thankfully politicians seem to understand this. Lets hope that doesn't change.
the speed limit in Spain is 120 Kmh but i usually do 130 or 140
in Bulgaria it is 140, I guess Spain sucks.
Approx 70mph
150-160 seems to be the norm Everytime I pass through
Was that a Bedford Kadett @4:14 ?
yep
and it came with the annoying added extra attached to the bootlid: "the tailgating cockwomble"
Bedford Astravan, although it was marketed as the Opel Kadett outside of Britain.
Blimey just started looking at people's comments .Recently model Pete is bang on there like his comments
Shocking following distances on display in this report. Seems worse than today's driving.

What a lame segment. No wonder the old Top Gear went tits up.
one thing i dont get with speed limits, lorries by law are restricted to 56 mph, so why is the speed limit still 60 mph, give me my 4mph back LOL
Silly man. You have at least 50kW. Compare that to my 33kW Corsa B 1.2 8V, which can do an indicated 110mph down a hill. Surely you can reach 80mph?
what would life be without our daily 100's?
remember when lorries we're limited to 56 lol

Ah no need to worry its a Lucas system so ot will never work.
Lucas electrics get home before dark.
So glad it never got the go ahead, it was absolutely the worst idea ever....EVER 👎
This is why old Top Gear died off.
LOL Really? What do you drive?
Laughs in german
A HGV with trailer able to do 70?
Twas the norm in the 70's and early - mid 80's...nothing to have them pass you at 75mph at 38 tonne gross
The top speedlimit for trucks with around 550 bhp is around 95-105 mph
Imagine our UK motorways being like the autobahns... There would be too many accidents because the boy racers would be everywhere going 100+
