Thanks for watching!
"Subsistence" is a word. "The action or fact of maintaining or supporting oneself at a minimum level." It's a reference to the outdoor-survival aspect of the game.
His European was really showing here
I beat this entire game multiple times, hell I even platinumed the game on the ps3 hd collection but I never knew you could do half the stuff you mentioned in the video. Which goes to show that this game is a true masterpiece, one that you can revisit countless times again and still learn something new every time.
Also great video I love your content!
Thanks! Yeah it's a really deep game. I played through it over 10 times easily, and while playing through it again for this video I still found out about new things, like the stinky camo, or the REVELATION that is the Hind D codec call.
@@thorhighheels I know this video is a year old but what is the game seen at 5:21 with Not Ocelot?
I have never seen it before and I cannot find anything online.
@@DMGaina it's the game kojima was working on before konami forced him to turn it into MGS3
@@thorhighheels Heck, the spinny throw-uppy thing you can do in the survival viewer even cures food poisoning! Neat stuff
The reason Roy Cambell's voice actor does the Time Paradox lines is because the Japanese actor for the Colonel dubbed Doc Brown from back to the future.
That's wonderful.
Thor you have truly leveled up in your video making. I thought after your video on the composer of Silent Hill (which I love watching even now) that was just a new apex for you. This new retrospective is so amazing. Please continue your way. I adore you!
Thanks dude!
Another known tidbit about the mission being VR: Calorie Mates are an edible in the game, but they didn't come about IRL until the 80s. Para-Medic also mentions the movie 'The Fly' in one of her codec calls, which also didn't come out until the 80s. Both adding to the theory of it being a VR mission.
IIRC there are a few more references and items in game which are out of their time period, but i don't recall them off the top of my head.
I think The Fly from the 80s is a remake/reboot of a movie from the late 50s with the same name though. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fly_(1958_film)
That Caloie Mate thing is weird, but that may have just been a bit of product placement haha
@@thorhighheels - My bad on The Fly part. I forgot about the '58 film as I'm more familiar with the short story. Interestingly, here's a list of the films referenced by Paramedic:

@@thorhighheels -something else I thought I'd point out on a re-viewing: Tajikistan was actually a part of the Soviet Union. Nothing else to really note, but yeah, technically that area was a part of the Soviet Union at the time.
Oh, and there was a fan theory that believes Zanzibar Land is actually what becomes of the area surrounding MGS3. Some fans noted the similarities in locations between MGS3 and, uh, MG2! Examples such as the swaying bridge and the sewage system of Groznij Grad, off the top of my head. Leading some to theorise that Big Boss converted part of this area into his Outer Heaven.

Nothing's better than a chill sunday evening and some chill lad video from Big Lad.
9:12 Arakawa Under The Bridge!!!! I love that Anime!
*"Mei Ling no longer sounds like she's playing PUBG and instead like someone who actually grew up in the States"*
Yeah, except for the small little detail where she actually grew up in a Chinese town (probably Chinatown itself), so having a foreign accent is not only perfectly fine, but also explains why she had some trouble communicating with people during her years of studying (from her official bio).
my bad, I should've confirmed that. I recalled her saying that she went to MIT so I just assumed she grew up in the US.
She did, but I meant she grew up in a Chinese community, where she could only get comfortable with Chinese speaking people, with English only coming as a secondary language. That's what the bio states anyway. But with all the retcons it hardly matters, so don't worry. I only see it as just another of Twin Snakes's list of faults.
What about Mei Long not having a accent in MGS4, is that a fault?
It really varies plenty of people loose acentes on purpose, especially when you want to be taken seriously in a professional environment. Having a regional acent that says I'm from somewhere else that's fine but you don't want to sound like a car salesman are a total hick.
A very refreshing way of writing reviews. It feels very laid-back and casual. I like it.
subsistence IS a word
nice vid though
true
Was gonna say the same.
Yeah. It means the act of subsisting ... that is, the act of surviving at a basic or minimal level.
Instant noodles are a miracle food though, they're crazy delicious.
Yeah, I thought of them as cheap food, but there's a reason why they're so popular besides being cheap and easy to prepare!
Wow.

Every time you make a new video the writing and editing gets so much funnier. Gj 👍
Glad to see you revisited your original review of Twin Snakes.
MGS 3 was massively detailed given the limited resources of the PS2. It still amazes me to this day that such a big game existed on such limited Hardware. Kojima really knew how to push the PS2 to its limits and even beyond.
Grey was getting good by mgs3 I was hoping for one more that gen to push the ps2 more same with silent hill
In anthropology and archaeology we use the term subsistence to describe the means by which a culture provides for its basic necessities like food. For instance, agriculture is a “subsistence strategy” for an agricultural society. I think it makes perfect sense here. Absolutely loving this series btw
Boktai was one of the best GBA experiences I’ve ever had
I played MGS3 online back in the day, and can confirm it was a lot of fun. Lots of bad connection lag though.
27:45 Fun fact: Campbell's Japanese VA (RIP) was also casted as the voice of Christopher Lloyd in the Japanese dub of BTTF movies. Yes, Kojambles found that hilarious and that's why the special time paradoxes have Campbell's voiceover.
As someone who played the crap out of MGS3 subsistence back in my high school days. It was a blast! My friend and I would get on there and play for hours, it was a good time. Especially with all the characters you could play as.
Next is MGS4. What a shitshow.. Can't wait to see it!

Mgs4 es una maravilla

You can play Metal Gear Online with a copy of subsistance, a patch and a ps2 emulator. It's pretty good.
Msg4 still fun as fuck to me. TheGamingBrit has a great reappraisal of it.
3:50 the controller vibration was the best and the most realistic of any METAL GEAR GAME or any other videogame that uses vibration period!!!
About the "do everything but stealth" thing.
I read it on MGS's subreddit that in a book that came with the collector's edition of MGS5, there was a quote from Kojima saying he wanted to make an "infiltration simulation" ever since series' birth, but only few approaches were possible.
With the open world, they could finally make that all round infiltration thing possible.
That comment puts the series in a new perspective for me.

Gotta say youre editing has improved for the best , Great video like always !
Toto - Africa
Did you hear it too?
@singular on1 I think its a DKC version of Toto.
I love how you can go the entire game without pulling an Alert phase.
I love how you didn't notice it happened in the video at least once.
"Snake Eater" is actually a slang term dating back to the same era MGS3 takes place in for soldiers in special operations units like Special Forces, MAC-V SOG, SEALs, etc. It wasn't Kojima making a dick joke. Jack/Naked Snake/Big Boss would qualify as a "snake eater" due to his background in spec ops.
Miracle food = instant noodles?
The 4rd wall break is 2 real 4 me
I am addicted to your Metal Gear series.
Just finished playing through MGS4, so I have a new one coming out soon!
This is a great ongoing series. Well done! Yeah, MGS3 turned the series completely self aware; Snake's fetishising of the pistol and staring at Eva's boobies took it to a whole new level. And of course, "wrestling with a snake-shaped gun." Haven't played Peace Walker yet, but I gather there were some references to it in The Phantom Pain. It's amazing and kind of scary to think that the basis for this prequel was because of Kojima's love of Bond (the manual even states the release of the From Russia With Love film among the important political events of the 60's). Makes me wonder what kind of game he'd make if he watched Hitchcock Presents.
Thor has ability to make me replay favorite games for the 10th time lol
Great video as always. Subsistence is a word tho.

Mgs3.. I even dreamed about playing it after the Trailer back then... It has the same place in my heart like other games from my childhood, also bought (or let it buy by my dad) the collected Edition with Ost CD and all
I really enjpyed twin snakes. I know everyone seems to think its worst of the mgs titles. However its still fun as hell and its a great steping on point for ppl who wanna start playing mgs but cant handle the dated ps1 version.
Ooo and i forgot to mention the ghost photos thkse were always awesome to try and find.
I wish this video never ends
…MG online version 1 does have a private server that can be ran even via emulator with a bunch of tweaked settings, so does MGO version 2
There are actually fanmade servers for MGS3 online that you can get into either in an emulator or on console with some tricks.
Nice call on Chechnya, but 'subsistence' is very much a word.

Subsistence is a real word... it means maintaining oneself at the minimum required.
just like how the first 6 star wars flicks are actually about the two droids, MGS is always gonna be about Johnny......
Johnny Gear Solid....
29:01 Russia doesn't have jungles, so I was probably inspired by all the media that takes place in central america AKA fav 80s proxy war setting.
I found MGS3 for 6 bucks and decided to get into the series. It seems like a really daunting place to start tbh; with the survival shit, no v cones, and no lego. Oh, and it's the vanilla version where it uses the classic camera, and as a newcomer I found it weird especially with the non rudimentary level design, resulting confused panic upon spottage. Then again, proper stealth in games give me mad anxiety. I might be overestimating the importance of stealth and consequences on getting caught, or I haven't got to the part where I can go balls out yet.
The substistence camera is much better
It's probably better to start with MGS1 for sure. Though getting spotted doesn't really matter too much in the Metal Gear series, unless you're playing on harder difficulties or if want to do a non-lethal run for whatever insane reason. For the most part though, going Rambo is a very viable option.
First time playing, I just slashed everyone like I was Tenchu cosplaying Rambo. Sorrow's river was just full of slashed throats lol. Freaked me out. Second time I did a pacifist run just to check it out.
And dude, the codec calls.. Like the russian bomb dogs, i dig this shit hard
“One of Kojima’s clones” 🤣😂😅
There's something that doesn't work in Twin Snakes for me. Yeah, it's basically a shot for shot remake and on paper you couldn't go wrong with that, but the level design doesn't mesh well with the mechanics from MGS2. In comparison to RE remake, it felt like a lazy and safe attempt.
RE remake was built from scratch with new puzzles, enemies, mechanics and design layout while the design layout of the first MGS was built around the limitations of the console hardware and Twin Snakes doesn't impress me on that front.
With adding kung fu bullet-time effects, higher poly count and MGS gameplay mechanics, I kind of expected a better effort put into it like for example redesigning the whole level structure and probably flesh out the story more.
The over top Matrix stuff in the cutscenes really killed the game for me. When Snake ran up a missile during the fight with Liquid in the Hind I seriously considered shutting the game off. Yeah MGS is over the top, but that took it too far.
Bless the rains down in the USSR
Question, what was that last song 'cause it sounded real _funky?_
So what you’re saying is that The Hind was the true mastermind behind all of this?
Kojima wanted the cutscenes to be more action packed, he said he wanted that in MGS1 but the PlayStation 1 wasn't powerful enough. Plus the son's of Big Boss are genetically modified/enhanced super soliders.
Frosty Exactly.
That explanation is bullshit.
He never said that.
Good Luck reviewing MGS peace walker in PS3 without anyone to play online :') (it's so lonely)
I'm actually looking forward to it. Along with Acid 1 & 2, it's the only MGS game I've never finished.
@@thorhighheels Peace Walker It is a great game, but it sure was designed with online play in mind, I finished it this year and was not able to enjoy some of interesting game mechanics because of its but still a great game

"what's up big dick?" 😂
Why does everyone think that the Pain shoots bees? Those are hornets. He shoots hornets. Why is that an important distinction? Well, because hornets are so much worse than bees. They're bigger, their stings hurt more, they can sting as many times as they want and not die, and some of them can shoot venom and when they do they aim for the eyes. Hornets are seriously little devils and I fear the possibility of a man making a tommy gun out of them and shooting them at me while screaming about being in pain.
Uh... Don't know if anyone pointed this out yet, but Silicon Knights ruined their company with other things.
5:18 ok no seriously wtf is this my dood
Game called 'Spy Fiction'
Why do you sound like both Vinny and Joel (Vinesauce) combined
KOJIMA JUICE.
Totally forgot to comment here earlier but here I am! So, I've been playing MGSV (SEE WHAT I DID THERE) for the first time and I think I have sunken about 7 or so hours into it. At first, it was pretty fun bum rushing bases and kidnapping Russians to build Big Boss's Ancapistani McDeath Squad, but it's really starting to become a chore now that I've done it 13 times now. This wouldn't be such a big deal if the characters and world were interesting, but Venom speaks like 3 words the entire game, Kaz just mumble grunts and Ocelot (despite how much of a sexy hunk he is) is kinda boring, which is a shame cause I love my Tex-Slav cat boi in MGS3. Afghanistan is empty as fuck and devoid of fun things to do too (like real life). Despite how linear MGS III was, you were always doing something new or different. Be it fighting new enemies or bosses, going to a new local, or kicking the shit out of Cat-boi Wonder.
Anyways, rant over. Good video, by the by.
You skipped The End? For shame!

Isn't that Venom not BB?
That was not Venom, that was Big Boss.
@@danielbeckman6742BB was burned alive???
@@seph--- that's correct.
@@danielbeckman6742 I've been searching. You are wrong. That was Venom.
@@seph--- no, you are mistaken. The clip featured in the video is from Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, in which Snake infiltrates the fortress of Zanzibar Land. It is the sequel to Metal Gear, where Snake infiltrated Outer Heaven. According to series canon, Snake defeated and killed Venom at Outer Heaven during his rookie mission. Snake fights Big Boss (Naked Snake) at Zanzibar Land, and kills him with ab improvised flame thrower as shown in the video. At that point Venom had already been dead for four years.
I'd love to see the sources you found that say I'm wrong, because I am very well versed in mgs lore and on this topic I am not wrong.
RISE UP
i prefer sitting tho
I forgot about that awesome healing system, why the fuck did they get rid of that? I don't begrudge 4 as much as most because it's not a direct sequel to 3 but 5 was such a colossal letdown when you compare it to this.
I like the idea that twin snakes is MGS1 retold by otacon, as it is just like one his "japanese animes"
Tween Sneks
the remake fucked up so many of the coolest moments in the cutscenes. the simple yet elegant jump that snake did to dodge Ocelot's first shot in the cutscene before their boss battle. the simple yet elegant jump that snake did to dodge Raven's first shot in the cutscene before their boss battle... it's probably silly, but for me, those were huge ruinages which I will never forget nor forgive.
This is genius. You're funny, creative, and fuck Sean Connery.
Thanks for covering this series in your style.
I kinda figured that even the name "Solid Snake," and all the variants as they came about, "Big Boss" and etc, were supposed to be phallic allusions to how you always play a more or less 80s American action-thriller "big dick" kinda guy--gruff, masculine, I mean you end up wearing a fucking eyepatch, at that point making you a "one eyed snake" haha. So yeah, Snake Eater and then some...
(Raiden being the exception that proves the rule)
I love your videos thor, but come on. Is the burping really necessary... 😔
the arc will end soon. It just happend on accident a few times because I resent doing retakes, and some ppl brought attention to it which was hilarious to me so I did it just to dunk on them a little bit, but now the meme has run dry. MGS3 (non Subsistence) was the first game I ever finished, back in 2012.
And I was pretty upset/disappointed by quite a lot of it at the time. Like I saw the twists from a mile away, the story presentation was anime as shit, and Japanese models in Russian castles were so bewildering, they took me out of the game.
In retrospect, I've gained far more appreciation for it.
Remember fanboys, Big Dick himself said the scenes in Twin Snakes were what he always envisioned MGS1, but couldnt do it because of hardware limitations...which was proven right by seeing how stupid the scenes in MGS2, 3 and 4 were.
Nope, he literally never said that.
Is the opening supposed to be a parody? that shit is horrifying :(
it's not a parody sadly. its from an actual interview with sean connery aka james bond aka the main inspo behind this game.
