I've read a theory somewhere that Paz was supposed to be a parody of Jpop idols. How she pretends to be pure, looks and claims to be younger than she actually is, hides her real personality for the sake of the "purity", all of that backed up by her manager/Zadornov.
Not sure if there's any truth to that, but her Japanese VA is actually an idol, so maybe that was the intention.

Peace Walker's my favorite game in the series. The mission structure, the (mostly) lighter plot, the more varied gameplay, the light-but-engaging management, the just right trickle of new goodies and gear, I love it. If I had any talent and resources, I'd love to make a Peace Walker-style game of my own.
mgs2 and mgs3 also had auto aim, you had to press, i think it was L1 or R1, while aiming first person OR third person. i didnt know that for years until i saw it in a speedrun video

I was listening to one of your old videos and i noticed your voice was way different back then. I assuming just different microphone and or settings. I was wondering if you ciuld give some insight on how you make your voice sound so good. Super expensive mic or just turning a certain setting up or down(which one)
Age probably has something to do with my voice changing, and I was also experimenting with a few different voice over styles 2 years ago. Kinda regret that now, but it is what is. As for audio quality, I'm really not an expert lol. I have a relatively cheap mic (around 60 dollars I think which really isn't much compared to the higher range stuff) and fumble my way through making it sound better with compression presets in FL Studio. I'm sure a book-smart audio guy would scoff at my shit but jokes on them because it somehow sounds good anyway.

It always seemed weird to me how late into the PSP's life Peace Walker was released, because I think they had stopped selling PSPs in Denmark, years before the game came out
Yeah that was one of the main reasons why I hadn't ever fully played it until now. I was pretty much done with the PSP by the time it came out.

I know Castlevania LoS is hella derivative, but dammit it's good. I think the game is worth playing alone for its world, which was striking and still looks great today.

If Peace Walker had been made as a full budget AAA release with it's story blended with Portable Ops instead of a portable game I think it would have become THE best MGS game and one of the greatest games of all time.
That's already the case minus the portable nature. Hell the PSP might have actually helped them focus on what mattered.
The coolest shit was coop in the game, man i miss that had so much fun, its crazy that this shit even ran on a psp.
With a name like Hot Coldman I was expecting some kinda Chad with a snake-like ding dong, but instead we got Hot Baldman.

God, the writing for the Cassete tapes in Peace Walker was so great compared to MGSV's dry boring tapes.
Most of Peace Walkers tapes are just as boring honestly. 90% are just exposition and descriptions. All the good Chico, Huey, and Strangelove tapes make up like 20 minutes total maybe. Basically all the ones Kyzoken made animations of.
They really only stand out because Peace Walker is the only Kojima written MGS game where the player character is consistently active in the conversation. Thanks Shuyo Murata.

Patreon definitely helped! I did think about setting up a goal specifically for something like this, but then I didn't want this video to take weeks or months, so I figured it was worth the expense.

You forgot to mention about Kojima's Transfarring feature in Peace Walker but when thinking about it again, Peace Walker should just get a Nintendo Switch port.

I just realized you never brought up the multiplayer aspect of Peace Walker. Alot of the bosses feel super bullet spongey I think because they expected you to go in with a buddy or two, which could be fun I imagine, but in a single player experience it makes things feel super drawn out.
This shit was worse than monsters hunter, the last bosses on hardest difficulty, are about one hour to finish that shit was crazy alone.
I love PW, it broke my heart what happened to "my troops" in mother base at the end of Ground Zeroes.

It in PW just subtle. Unlike Otacon he never takes responsibility for his actions and unlike Otacon who makes sneaky gadget and only supplies Snake with tranq guns Huey avoids all responsibility for what his creations are used for and supplies Big Boss with a nuclear equipped Metal Gear.
He was a darker version of Hal the whole time.

@@Tamacat388 Phantom Pain had a rape scene that served absolutely no purpose in the story, while in Ground Zeroes it was to show how sick and demented Skull Face was (of course, that lead to nowhere in Phantom Pain).
Of course, rape scenes in Metal Gear were completely out of place, and just showed how delusional Kojima was at that point.
@@Jose-se9pu Phantom Pain didnt have a rape scene. It just alluded to one to show the Soviets taking revenge on Diamond Dogs for all the trouble they caused them. To reinforce the cycle of revenge theme.
In GZ it's to establish that Skully is bad even though that had already been established by showing Chicos legs disabled and having a bomb inserted into Paz. The rape scene was entirely redundant. It didnt even lead to Chico betraying MSF. It literally served no purpose.
I was proper blown away by mgs 3d. It was an experience akin to what people say they felt with the Switch when it was new. The feeling of having a "real" full console game on a handheld. It's a lot of game for a handheld at the time. I don't like the 3d effect, but I don't like that on any 3ds games. It is indeed a great ass port.

PeaceWalker was the first MGS game that I actually played properly and completed... actually I've only completed MGS4/5/PW, I only finally played through MGS4 after moving to a new place and having no internet, I loved MGS5's gameplay and was a little meh on the story for understandable reasons (although I actually did like Skull Face!) but honestly even after playing more of MGS1/2/3 and completing 4/5 Peace Walker is still, by far, my favorite game in the series, I honestly feel like GZ is my second favorite despite only being essentially a very repeatable demo but damn was the design solid.
Wish I could enjoy the first three games in the series (or even the gameplay of 4 really) but I'm so spoiled by the awesome PW/MG5 that honestly just feels like shite to me.
I haven’t seen this video yet but Peace Walker is my favourite, so I’m ready to either be deeply saddened or very elated.
Thank you for actual footage of MGS3D. Being able of walk while crouching is something that I really like from this version and it has a good 3D effect.

I wish you mentioned that if you had a second analog stick as a peripheral or owned a 3DS with the stick built in the game allows you to take advantage of it and have dual analog aim.
I don't know if Kojima actually knew a lot about Che Guevara, but comparing him to Big Boss is wildly ignorant of him. Even though he is acclaimed as a "hero" or "rebellious hero", the reality is that the guy was a bloodthirsty psycopath who decapitated children by shooting them at point blank with his .44 revolver. When Kojima has Big Boss saying that "He is nothing at the feet of Che" only goes to show how completely ignorant Kojima was regarding the figure of Che, and that his only notion of who he was, was the one promoted by mainstream media and popular culture. Superficially they could be similar, but there is always the influence of Snake Pilsken from "Escape from L.A", another film that hugely influenced Kojima's work.
Regardless of that detail, this retrospective is pure gold, and I can tell you really put the effort to make different arguments than those made by most UA-camrs who like to talk about the Metal Gear franchise. Btw, thanks for letting us know that Castlevania LoS had Kojima working on the stuff, that's truly an interesting fact to keep in mind while playing the game.

I also wanted to add... Huey was brilliant in this, he felt more fleshed out that Otacon, despite basically being there for fan service. Christopher Randolph also added a slight twang to the accent which differentiated his character from Hal, which I really liked.
It is because of this I believe Huey was innocent in MGSV, potentially naive maybe. Bear in mind, his last conversation before the end of Ground Zeroes is about the topic of *hiding the nukes*. People who say he's a traitor seem to neglect that aspect.
Peace Walker is the only one I beat therefore it is my favorite one in the series
3DS MGS3 is the definitive version. Better controls. Crouch walking. Proper third person mechanics like MGS4 and despite the hit on resolution and frame rate, it uses the 3DS’ newer graphics architecture to improve the texture mapping and shader effects. This should’ve been the game they remastered for release as opposed to the vanilla MGS3.
I'm surprised you didn't try the c nub given you have 2ds xl🤔 the circle pad pro controls make the controls infinitely better and provide full analog aim
I think it's weird that Japan would have homophobic tendencies now when they were more open-minded about it during the Edo period, making art and poetry about gay sex and such when our ancestors were imprisoning or torturing people for it, they had tomes on Bushido war tradition heralding to the Sengoku era that basically encouraged soldiers to love each other... I could never get into PW. Perfect example of more does not equal better. MGS gameplay is 8/10. MGS gameplay implanted into a cohesive moment to moment experience is 10/10.
Really good retrospective, but I couldn't shake off the feeling that the 3DS footage was redundant, for some reason. Like, on a scale from 1 to 10, it was about 700$ worth of redundancy.
