  • Kennedy Station is currently under construction as part of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project, and will become one of the busiest transfer stations in the GTA once complete. The complex will allow passengers to change between the new light rail, GO Trains, TTC subways and TTC buses. We check in on the construction site to see how the station is progressing, and detail the features of the future transit hub.

Line 3 is reaching the "end of its useful life" only because the exact same vehicles that served the line in the 1980s are still in service now. Every other line has received new vehicles since the 1980s. In some cases, the vehicles on other lines are two generations younger than the vehicles on Line 3 Scarborough. The Vancouver SkyTrain started off with the same equipment as Line 3, but is not using that equipment now.

Vancouver still uses the MK I trains (in addition to the newer MK II and MK III trains), but they are slated for retirement starting in 2023-24 as a new generation of trains is obtained.
As for Line 3, it would require a re-engineered curve at Kennedy to accommodate a wider turning radius for newer trains as well as signalling upgrades. It's sad to see the loss of a rapid transit line, but the line 2 extension along McCowan probably has greater ridership potential (compared to largely industrial areas along Line 3) as it will stop at Scarborough hospital and be closer to more residential areas. The construction cost is huge though, and there will be a gap of several years when Line 3 is decommissioned and replaced with buses but the extension is still under construction.

When Kennedy Go Station is complete, will both east and west platforms be able to hold 12 car trains?

Tayte Sengthavy no when the Scarborough subway extension will be finished (line 2) at about 2026-2028. Although I don’t know the exact year. That’s when the Scarborough RT guideway at Kennedy and Eglinton will be demolished and the platform will be extended.
