Finally, someone who works like I do. I thought I was weird for having ten or more sketchbooks going at once. Like you each one if for different mediums and different things. I also have my research sketchbook book with drawings and notes.

I can't tell you how grateful I am for this video! 🥺 I love sketchbooks, and I LOVE segregating them according to subjects and mediums, and I was always told I'm too extravagant, and I just draw to buy and hoard things. Like someone already mentiined in this commenta section, my art has also been suffering as I've been forcibly limiting myself to 1-2 sketchbooks. People don't get how hurtful their comments are.

I have 14 sketchbooks going at the moment. I have a few where each is dedicated to a different online class. The rest are organized by medium. I prefer to draw on smooth thinner (60 to 80 lbs) paper so I have a few of those, at least one for experiments and one for “finished” pieces. I have two watercolor sketchbooks - one for experimenting and one for “finished” pieces. I have two mixed media, one large and one small for finished pieces and another for experimenting. The mixed media are mostly for gouache. I have one dedicated to alcohol markers. And the. I have one general purpose that is in my purse at all times for doodling, quick sketches, and general ideas. The rest are each dedicated to the work for a particular online class.
I hardly do anything in loose paper because it is easier to store in a sketchbook than in a binder. And I never hang or give away my art anyway. I agree about flipping through a sketchbook and seeing the progress I have made.

    • @CecileYadro
      @CecileYadro  7 місяців тому +3

Wow! Even more organized than I am! I don't like thin paper though, but I just began one with just ink on it, and it's going well. But I thought of adding watercolor and now I can't as the paper is so thin.

    • @sandrarahimi5688

@@CecileYadro I find I can add a very light was of watercolor to 80 or 90lbs papers Of course you can’t do any watercolor techniques of it. Also water-based markers do well (no blending) on 80 or 90 lbs paper. I just don’t like drawing on the rough paper. I guess I could use hot press watercolor paper, but in general watercolor paper is kind of expensive compared to thinner drawing paper.📝

You're so much more organized than I am. I've always only ever used one notebook/ SketchBook at a time. I'm new to drawing and painting, but when I was doing a lot of writing you would find my notebook had a short story, interrupted by a poem, and then a shopping list, a bunch of doodles, a diary entry, thoughts about a book I read, another short story, then back to the original short story. Occasionally, I'd put in page numbers in them and write on the cover what was in it.

I know this is an old video but I just had to comment thanking you. I have always had trouble only using one sketch book, but I’ve also have always felt guilty about having multiple because I felt like I was wasting sketch books because so many artists just use one. Watching someone who actually not only using more than one sketch book but finishes them is very inspiring and makes me feel better about my want and need to have more than one sketch book at a time.

Thank you for talking about that! I already thought something must be wrong with me, why I can not draw in one sketchbook and tried to force me to use the same and then I mostly did not use any. I like to organize different things in different books, thats how my brain works I think and now I know I am not alone and I am not weird or something! And maybe I can allow myself to buy some more, because I hardly limited myself and did not have enough yet for all the different things I like to try out and this is causing a huge creative block I think. We will see. Thanks for sharing, I am sketchbook lover too and also like to feel the different paper textures :)

Love this video, it feels like it gives 'permission' to have more than one sketchbook at a time. I currently have 5 on the go - one for just black and white (mostly ink), one for all kinds of bold colours and patterns, one for swatches and testing things out, one a small one to practice as I'll be taking a small sketchbook on holiday with me and I want to get used to the size (any excuse, right...?), and one that I will doodle in when watching tv. I did pick up a sketch pad today, but that's a pad and does not count... ;)

I currently have 10 sketchbooks in progress. That includes 3 small A6 sketchbooks in small army type pouches I made up to grab and go. two kits have a watercolor book, portable micro painter with a limited palette, brushes and pen/pen etc. One is for landscapes/seascapes and the other for urban sketching. The 3rd kit has a mixture of different colored pens and it's own book with thinner paper. I also have another portable micro painter with some gouache in that I can either add to or switch out with my landscape palette. My other sketchbooks are A5 and have different purposes like yours. Watercolor, gouache, notes and swatches and research, sketching with markers, 2 kraft paper books, one for practicing drawing rocks and the other for trees and the last one was a new brand and I've only done one painting in it. It'll be my next watercolor book when my other is finished. I keep a lot of journals too like one for my photography notes and one for notes from Skillshare courses I've done. I don't think I could live without my various books. They're recording my life's journey and are fun to look back through.

Hi, Cecile.. it's so interesting to see how different artists work in multiple books.. I only have a couple that I work in simultaneously , as I find it too easy to " forget" about one that's half finished .. Also , limited space becomes an issue for me.. I tend to just stick to one book that has paper that can handle multiple mediums , and just play and practice in it , almost daily, until
it's finished .. I started my sketchbook habit about 5 years ago , and I think I've gone past 50 books , and still going lol.. I love it , and love seeing what I've done, and see the changes or evolution of my work.. Thanks so much for this video .. Norakag 😁😁

I laughed out loud when you said "I say 14 but I am sure I have more, I just don't want to scare you" :-) So I had to go back and count and I counted 33 on the shelf (at the 12.51 mark). Now I am really curious how many you have in total that are "open" currently! I am so glad you shared your passion for sketchbooks... I used to think I had too many open and that I "should" finish them before I open another one but now I don't feel so bad with my 23 still to be completed sketchbooks! 🙂

3 for watercolor, 2 for gouache and 2 for pen. I want to start another for gouache to see how I like toned paper. I really enjoyed your whiskey bottle tutorial on black paper and Sarah Burns keeps talking about toned tan paper. So I have to try that new sketchbook out for gouache, which has tan, grey and black. I have somewhere around a dozen, three that are small -4" x 6" or so, that will slip in my carry bag when I go out, one WC paper and the other two more general purpose but will take a light wash. Then there are three larger ones 9" x 12", one heavy WC paper for finished pieces, one lightweight WC paper for doodles and investigation, and one drawing paper for finished dry media drawings. One more is themed for a topic I am researching, Then at least four mid sized sketchbooks 5 1/2" x 8 1/2' or so, for rough pencil sketches. Having several there allows me to work on something else in book B while in the middle of a sketch in book A, and so forth. And a WC journal of the same size for working out smaller ideas
I thought I was the only one who had my brain scattered across multiple books! I am glad to know I am not alone.
    Wonderful video.

These vary in size; I do have a few of the goals brands/specs that I have targeted for predominantly gouache and my mixed media, smooth enough to be nice drawing surfaces. Size, paper, planned themes make a stack that includes lined journals for general art notes/ideas, horses/painting and customizing 3D pieces, plans to use much of a beading collection in free-form embroidery, color mixing. Main media colored pencils, gouache, acrylics.

I too have several sketchbooks. I mostry make them myself, but I also buy some. I haven't counted them, but like you, I have them for different purposes. One is for client sketches where I sketch logo ideas that I can later scan and present to the client. Then I have my current main sketchbook. This year I made it from several types of paper, including brown wrapping paper, to allow for more mediums without wasting precious cotton paper for unnecessary things. I have one where I write or sketch ideas, lists, test materials, etc. Two smaller ones that I usually use for Inktober. A larger one for portrait studies. I also started making location dedicated sketchbooks because my husband took up fishing and there are several places we go back to, so I decided to have a sketchbook for each of this places. I'll see how that goes compared to having one dedicated fishing sites sketchbook. And lastly, I have several sketchbooks that I bought and started, but don't have a precise scope yet.
