- From Transatlantic Sessions series 2 (1998)
song: Nanci Griffith/Rick West
bass: Danny Thompson
piano: Donald Shaw
dobro: Jerry Douglas
guitar: Russ Barenberg
Such a beautiful song,Maura’s stunning voice &Nanci’s beautiful harmony,RIP Nanci,a stunning artist
Agree, both exceptional artists/vocalists. The kind you don't forget! And Jerry Douglas on dobro ain't exactly chopped liver!
This was recorded in 1998. I read today that Nanci survived bouts with breast cancer in 1996 and thyroid cancer in 1998. What a strong spirit. Rest in Peace.
RIP dear Nanci. I was heartsick when Dan Fogelberg passed away over a decade ago, followed a few months later by Kate McGarrigle. Now I am incredibly saddened by the passing of Nanci Griffith. All incredibly gifted songwriters. We were blessed to have heard and lived their music.
Dan fogelberg is my absolute favourite
How I felt too
Kate Wolf 1986
Ireland has over the last century produced some of the most amazing singers and here is another one. Such a huge talent. No wonder Nanci spends so much time in the Emerald isle
We lost a great one today! Nanci Griffith was a great songwriter. Maura O'Connell did a masterful job on this song, with Nanci singing harmony.
RIP Nanci Griffith. An American treasure whose legacy will continue to grow long past her death. One of our greatest songwriters.
... an international treasure .....
Oh, Nanci, how can you have left us? Sweet travels.
Unbelievable. Two of my favorite songbirds. RIP Nanci. What an artist. Such sensitive and lovely songwriting! I love how Nanci humbly allows Maura to take the lead on the vocals, appearing to thoroughly enjoy the justice she offers this masterpiece. And the two together--wow, those harmonies. I can't stop listening.
They are both wonderful. Nanci ‘allowed’ Maura to lead: it’s Maura’s song. Nonetheless a very lovely duet. Both fabulous.
@@alanmacdonald2634 The song was written by Nanci.
So true. Beautiful nature.
"it's Maura's song" 😆
All these armchair experts who post their foolishness for everyone to see are tiring.
@@rjcary Correction: It was written by Naci Griffith and Rick West
Watching the transatlantic sessions was how I was introduced to Nanci Griffith. So sad to hear of her passing. May she rest in peace.
That's how I found Nanci too. Fallen in love with her music . So sad.
Every single time I hear this song (wow, Nancy and Maura together), I tear up with emotion... I so love this song........... thank you ❤
So sad to lose Nanci. RIP for always, my dear.
Brilliant
Maura has to be the greatest modern Irish female voice.
With you there Steven. All time favourite.
You got that right!
Steven, agreed
Love Maura, but my favorite and it ain't close is the GREAT Mary Black!!!!
Modern, even I who am of Maura's generation wouldn't say that. Maura's seminal solo album Collected, her best work in my opinion, was released in 1987.
There are so many, unique and diverse, traditional and non traditional, established and new, female singers, songwriters and musicians (men too) in Ireland today, it would be extremely difficult to pick any one above the rest.
What a beautiful pair of voices! Maura O'Connell sings with such power and beauty. Nanci Griffith sings and plays so beautifully. This is rare harmony.
RIP Nancy, you brought joy with your music
I can't get enough of listening to great singers, performers and great songwriting like this.
I can't even begin to comment on this performance. Nanci is one of my favorite songwriters of all time, and this is just glorious. I've never heard of Maura O'Connell, but I'm going to look for her now. Amazing voice.
Her phrasing is apt, thrilling. This is just marvelous, in all directions.
I've listened to this song hundreds of times by both Maura and Nanci and I cry every time. I feel silly every time I hear Maura sing it live. It's really the only song that does this to me. Such a treasure
You should feel silly if this DOESN'T make you want to cry.
It's perfect.
I am crying now again watching this sublime performance.
Me too.
Shawn Colvin's Killing the Blues gets me every time, too.
Gorgeous song by two beautiful artists. So sad to hear of Nanci's passing. Gone too soon. Rest in peace wonderful lady. A beautiful angel now singing with the Lord. What a gift He got yesterday. Condolences to her family and musical friends. Thank you for all the lovely music Nanci.
I have always loved Nanci Griffith's work. Maura O'Connell singing her music just makes it that much more beautiful!
what a beautiful song!! Nanci has a big heart, a beautiful soul....it's visible....When she smiles, it's a present.....
Such sadness to learn of Nancy's passing. A heart and voice in the correct place , always.....not forgetting this version with the lovely voice of Maura O'Connell.
Chills. So beautiful. R.I.P. Nanci and thank you for the music.
It is how this music slides with ease into the best instincts of American country music......and her voice, so exqusisite, leaves the hardest man in tears.
I do love her music and it was a very gracious of her to welcome my husband and I to sit and share drinks and conversation with her and her band members after a small local concert we went to years ago. Our oldest daughter chose" Feet of a Dancer" for her dance with her daddy at her wedding. Maura's music has been a part of the "soundtrack" of our 30 year marriage from the beginning. She has a beautiful voice and there is also so much soul in every song she performs. Thank you for sharing this video. It is a beautiful reminder of love even in troubled times.
Crying my eyes our listening to this....and I am completely Ok with that...bless them.
Thrill chills on a loop.
we should be proud to say this girl came from ireland and her voice is truly amazing
What's better than this comment is the fact you support Ulster. She's a legend.....
@@tinsg1 & Nanci a Proud Texan !
Unbelievable performance here. Sorry to hear about Nanci's passing. Truly great.
A really special collaboration - it doesn’t get much better than this.
Aw i just love the song of her voice! Im hooked!
It's a song about her grandparents living on a farm during the Dust Bowl in the 1930's. Nanci explained that before singing this in concert
This is undoubtedly the best version of this song. I love Maura O'Connell's voice and the passion she brings to everything she records.
Oh my, this song has got to be one of the most breaking and beautiful ever written. Just love it so much. Thanks for posting !
Hi I agree with your comment but thank god for YT people outside of Ireland would not have heard of her.Ireland is graced by so many fine singers and she is a truley talented artist and more important a fine human being.I saw her in concert for charity last year and was blown away by her talent and humanity.
No words. Genius song and performance. Rest In Peace, Nanci. Thank you for your art.
This reminds me of my wife and I on our honeymoon in Ireland 13 years ago. We listened to this album the whole time.
We named our youngest daughter Maura. Love this song.
What a wonderful performance by all of the band!
I saw Maura O'Connell years ago opening for John Prine. She was fucking amazing!
I saw her open for John Prine, too - in Charlotte, NC in 1989 or 90. I have never forgotten how great she was either.
I saw Maura open for John Prine as well. It was at Westbury Music Fair on Long Island. I saw her again back around 2012 - 2013 at the Birchmere in Alexandria VA. She is phenomenal.
@@tbird5892 that's the show I was at
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
Every time I see Maura live I end up crying...her voice is just so beautiful.
A truly memorable performance
Beautiful , love that great song
This song is the best commentary on prosperity / bust and feast / famine cycle of farmers - WORLDWIDE! I LOVE IT... Such universal truths. One day, hopefully when it is not too late, we will recognize we wouldn't eat without the struggles of farmers.
You and all who have been sooo blessed to have made music with Nancy Griffith will always feel her in your soul. Now she IS MUSIC.
I think this living room might be my actual image of heaven.
This one is SOOO beautiful.
American Celtic and Scandinavian tunes. I love it. Best regards and thanks from PB in Sweden
Jerry Douglas on dobro!! Simply the best!! Awesome voices!!
First time to hear this. Beautiful harmonies from Nancy. So sorry Nancy ran out of road.
Oh, damn - this really did bring tears to my eyes and I know this song. The song of their voices and the sound of their hearts. :)
Watching this and I can't still believe that Nanci Griffith is no longer with us. This is just beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Great song, great voices. Actually gave me chills!
just beautiful, Maura's voice is just amazing, a special version.
so incredible ...Maura and Nanci ...... RIP Nanci
So good to hear Maura O'Connell again, Lovely
I really can't imagine music better than this. Two women who are tops in my book. One helluva supporting cast!
willy
Always loved Nanci. Used to watch her at the Texas Club in Baton Rouge when she was rising. Obviously, a talented rising star. Love her. Her covers are killer too.
Maura's voice rinces me out like a wet towel. Pure stunning combo though. The pure drop.
I LOVE Nanci Griffith...so sorry to see her gone...beautiful spirit
Breath taking
I just watched a 2 hour documentary on the "black blizzards' of the "dust bowl". My heart goes out to the victims of that prolonged drought. This song stands as a nice tribute to their fortitude and courage.
In this time of troubles Nanci takes me back to my teenage years and makes me hope the world can be a begterplace
Had the great good fortune to see Nanci in concert in a tiny club in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. I was at least 10 years a devoted fan - maybe nearly 20, I don't remember the year. Humble, charming, and utterly inspiring. This teaming with Maura O'Donnell is gold. Rest well.
I love this version, Ihe power of Maura`s voice adds another layer of depth to this song.Nanci sounded great and looked like she was having fun doing the harmonies.
Thats the devine voice I heard on my Robert Earl Keen background vocals. Sublime!
RIP Nanci ... Loved your songs.
I had the diving pleasure of meeting Ms. O'Connell and hearing her play on her first large US tour. What a gracious, amazing artist.
I saw Maura several times. The first was at a bookstore where she sang Acapella in a CD aisle. Probably the greatest singing performance I ever saw ..Joan Osborne was a close second.
I never tire of listening to these folks. Great harmony by Maura and Nancy, and a superb back-up by the musicians, who lend their own sensitivity to such a timeless song.
Must listen a few more times. It's too beautiful.
just heard Maura at the fleadh 2014 in sligo and she amazing never lost her voice and came across so nice. it was the highlight of the fleadh for me.
lucky you...I think intg4 player if you want to relive the moment
Must have watched this over 100 time it get me ever time xxx
Wonderful!!!!!!!!
lovely voice, and great arrangement as usual with Nanci Griffith's work. just discovered Maura, and am an immediate fan. Nani's harmonizing and obvious admiration for Maura's excellent instrument...well a pleasure to watch as well.
Two amazing women, and they're lovely together.
We know all about trouble in the fields
Here in Ireland 🇮🇪
The land crab is on thanks to the bloody

.Greetings from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪 its raining 🌧tears for Nanci sure she was wan of our own...
Beautiful 😊
There are some performances that just stick with you, and this is one of them. Thanks for posting!
Incredibly lovely, the melody and the lyrics are stunning & their voices.. pared down beauty at its best.
This song is the best commentary on prosperity / bust and feast / famine cycle of farmers - WORLDWIDE! I LOVE IT... Such universal truths.
This is one of my favorite songs. Nanci Griffith, you are one great writer!
An absolutely gorgeous duet. Brava!
TWO OF THE GREATS NANCY R I P AMEN ❤️🌹☘️🇮🇪☘️🇺🇸☘️🌍
Excellent video. Two really fine female voices together.
OMG, totally brilliant singing, song-writing, musicianship and vocal harmony! Blown away by this performance! God bless Nanci, recently departed, but in our hearts for ever. Love and peace.
Somehow it took me 57 years to run into Maura O'Connell and I have to thank YT
Love this. Truly gifted and sent from above,
Beautiful song and beautifully sung
Beautiful
I had the pleasure of seeing Maura 20 years ago when she was a guest vocalist for Phil Coulter and she was outstanding. She was funny cuz she was wearing a nice dress and looked great but she clomped onto the stage like she was headed for the milking parlor. I heard that she was bound for Nashville but never heard another thing about her until this video. I am delighted that she has befriended Nanci and is still performing. You bet that i would have loved to have been there. So talented.
I love her voice! Dang it! I wish I could sing like that...
I discovered this artist and had a great album of hers that confirmed for me what I still know today. One of the best voices ever!
I was lucky enough to take my boyfriend to see Nanci in L.A. back in 1990 and had most of her albums. Though Nanci's voice can grate on you after a long while, she is such a talented songwriter and gift interpreter of other people's material, that you can forgive.
And together with Maura, they are magic.
This is just beautiful. Thank you for putting it up here.
Magnificent collaboration ✨🌸✨
Maura O'Connell singing, 'Living in These Troubled Times' is really relevant too - Happy Christmas and Good Health to Everyone worldwide from Ireland! xxx Maureen.
Great song!
Great song .. great artists...
I always felt that Nanci's "One Fair Summer Evening" Album was one of the great "unknown" albums ... Well worth the listen... (The DVD of the album is a winner as well!!)
I have seen Maura as a solo, I saw her with Nanci, and I saw her with the GREAT Mary Black. Each time I left saying her voice can rattle the windows! I think this video shows how much Nanci loved sharing the stage with her fellow artist.
Nancy's song about her great uncle and great aunt.
