  • For the last two months Nellie and I have been backpacking Central America. We started in Cancun and will finish this week in San Jose.
    In this video we wanted to touch on a few of the budgeting tips and tricks we've learned throughout this journey. Specifically Transportation, Accommodation, Food & Drink, and Activities.
    All of these things if managed properly can make the journey absolutely amazing and save you a lot of money at the same time.
    Nellie has been averaging about $40 per day over all of the expenses including some internal flights, rental car, and activities. I've been a bit higher at about $52 but I put that down to more food and drink than anything else.
    It is however possible to backpack Central America at around $30 per day or less if you're really careful.
    Hope these tips and info helps and that you are enjoying your journey or getting stoked on the adventure ahead!!
    Cheers from Uvita Beach, Costa Rica!!
    Greg

      Man, there is a chance I could make at least a week or two of that. Let's keep in touch and see if the locations and activities align.

    I lived in Tibas (San Jose) my junior year of college (I was a Spanish major).
    Costa Rica has buses (or did in 2005) that are a step above chicken buses but a 2 hour trip can still become a 7 hour trip if there is a wreck on one of those narrow roads. My parents visited once and rented a vehicle but left their stuff inside where it could be seen and had a lot stolen in La Fortuna (probably by someone not from La Fortuna). I had good luck in Costa Rica and did a lot on very little money, but not everyone wants to spend the night on a lopsided hammock, even if they are just $5.

      @@gregorsnell yeah I love central america I moved there as a kid and now that I'm back in the states I wanna go back. Central America is pretty awesome. Are there ways to make money you've found while traveling to travel longer?

    Central America is more cheaper than other areas in the world, maybe Asia could be at the same line of prices. Merry Christmas guys and happy New Year.

      +Mochilachapina Yeah were thinking of backpacking SEA for about four months next year. I also think we can do it for less than $50 per day relatively easily.

    Hi nice video, I was doing some research about Central America and really liked your tips. Do you have a favorite country in Central America? Which one did you like most? And what about your budget for the trip?

    • @gregorsnell
      @gregorsnell  5 років тому +2

      Hi Jenny that’s great. Yeah we both really liked Nicaragua 🇳🇮 budget for the trip was about $50 per day each. That’s enough to have an incredible journey for sure. You could probably do it cheaper if you really try too.

    Nice video from you both, I liked these tips, I then saw your money on one clip and it made me wonder do you need to exchange money at the border, any tips around that or is everything in US Dollars?
    I loved your airbnb stops, might you have a list of these as some of these had awesome views, but I guess it makes sense depending upon which route you're travelling.
    Greatly enjoyed this just surprised 2-months have gone by already!! :)

      Thanks Ed!! I'd say Nicaragua in general. It's such an amazing country to travel at the moment. Any plans to backpack next year?

      Greg Snell I lived in Central America for two years, been everywhere since el
      Salvador. Moved back to the states a while ago, but just decided to start a travel UA-cam channel now, haha. I think Nicaragua was my favorite place and I just went back there for a week last month. Feel free to check it out!

    Thank you for the great tips! I definitely need to check out Nicaragua and Costa Rica sometime, so I'm sure they will come in handy. I know two of my cousins went to Central America early this year, so I should ask them how much they spent on average although they were only there for a couple weeks.

    • @gregorsnell
      @gregorsnell  6 років тому +1

      +Scottman895 Travel Thanks bro! Yeah it'd be really interesting to see what your cousins say about their daily spending. Let me know when you know.

    • @scottman895

      They spent about a couple weeks down there primarily in El Salvador and Nicaragua. She mentioned that they primarily stayed in hostels which were generally less than $20 a night with one being $7 or $8 a night. In addition, the food costs were quite low, so they definitely spent a very low amount especially for daily necessities. Money was probably spent on different tours, but I know it sounded really cool for what they did! From El Salvador to Nicaragua, they ended up doing the shuttle through Honduras which was quite cheap. Nevertheless, it sounded quite exciting, and I was really glad to see they had a great time!

    All solid tips, thank you. We can't believe it's already been over 2 months since you two arrived there. Wow crazy how time flies! Are you staying under your planned budget overall? And when and where in Germany are you going to be? We will be down with family near Nürnberg and flying home on the 7th of Jan.

    • @gregorsnell
      @gregorsnell  6 років тому +1

      +Pedal Power Touring Hey PPT!! Yeah time flies as you well know. Yes Nellie is well under budget overall. I'm slightly over mostly due to the rental car in Costa Rica, but all and all I'm happy with the expenses in just under three months travelling. We'll be back in Germany January 09th in Hamburg for a week, then heading down to Austria for work. We'll just miss you. Hope you have a great visit over the holidays though!!

    Good tips, I backpacked for 8 months between June last year and February this year. I think that between a hostel and two large meals + snack you could easily keep daily expenses below $20-$25 USD if you don't use too much transportation. Of course sleeping outside or in a church is ok for some and going to cut that price even lower. Food should never cost more than $10-15/day per person unless you are eating extravagantly. Central America (at least from what I saw on the road between Managua and San Jose and the Pacific coast) is as cheap as you're willing to make it.
