    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:
    Video of Gas Refrigerator:
    Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

The more I have to deal with people, the more I appreciate the company of my dogs. People ask me if i get lonely. There is a huge difference between being alone and being lonely. I'm lonely in a room full of people. Alone with my dogs in the woods - I'm in heaven

Simple pleasures like cooking, camping, cutting and burning firewood, hunting etc. really gives a person a sense of self worth, pleasure and just a real sense of accomplishment. You hit the nail right on the head. (Yes a carpentry pun). One time at deer camp I was making something, can't remember now but it was some type of thing that was needed. My friend looked at me and said "You know they sell those things in stores". I tried to explain the personal pride from doing something for yourself and making it useable. Fell on deaf ears. Yes he has money, and no he is seldom happy.Simple pleasures are the answer and I enjoyed your video as always.

I was blessed this year to have been able to stay at my cabin 5 weeks. I went to deer hunt in our season and I got a lot of needed work done on my cabin some I didn't even knowing there were problems, Flying squirrels in the attic was a top priority because they kept me up all nights with there chewing. I patched up everything except for there main hole then when I was sure one night they had all left for awhile I plugged up the last place, After that I was able to start sleeping all night long LOL... I painted and caulked and spray foamed, I kept busy but I had the time of my life. Now I am looking forward to my next long visit after I spend a little time back in my house but I will be back up as soon as money allows, LP gas, more paint, Solar parts. Its all good. I really enjoy your videos and told my son about your ice box, we are thinking of trying something like that now under our stairway on an outter wall. Thanks again for your video.

Yours are the only videos I have an alert sent to my email for.. Your videos show a slice of a lifestyle. Your on a course I sometimes yearn for. You are not judgmental in expressing your viewpoints. It's good if they make people think and perhaps evaluate their own lives and priorities. Certainly some will decide they like their lives the way they are. I find your "back to basics" philosophy refreshing. I have never once thought of you as a recluse. You relate to all of us very well. Many have trouble spending big chunks of time only with themselves to me that demonstrates a person a peace with themselves. Of course some withdraw because of their own demons but that is not you. Take care and God Bless

Great stuff there Boss and good on you for following your childhood dreams. I'm at a crossroads in my life right now, that has me thinking of retiring this summer and moving back home to start the next chapter in my life. All my children will be between 19 - 27 years old and my folks sure could use an extra hand around the house with their poor health conditions. If I work just another 5 years I'll have the same standard of living I have and enjoy today. However, like you say, money is not everything and you can never time back. In 5 years home will look a lot different then it does right now.

Your philosophy on money is spot on for sure. I see it the same way, I have to be inventive and go by my wits when tackling a project that requires too much money. And I enjoy the outcome when I come up with something that is better off than anything in the store because it's personalized to my liking. I think that could be said for all of the wood work you do, which is very nice btw. Keep on keepin' on and maybe one of these days people with arbitrary possessions and dreams will see life simply again and we can all just get along.

Boss, you have such an eloquent way with your words. “The more money someone has, the less they know how to do.” Isn’t that the truth. I’ve done well for myself over the years, but I’ve done even better by having some practical skills. I work on the cars, can do basic electric work and plumbing, do my own yard work, etc. the knowledge, will, and enjoyment I receive from doing these projects has saved me countless thousands of dollars. I’ve never made a tremendous amount, but I have a lot more to show for my earnings than people who make a lot more than me. Boss, you’re an inspiration to us all! God bless you and yours my friend!

I suppose that if people from 200 years ago, could see what you have today, they would consider you a rich man. Of course the simplicity of today is rooted in the advancements we make of the simple things for life. +Sandra Hess I'd be that much happier. That's why I find it so blissful at my NH cabin. I'm surrounded by miles and miles of forest. My cabin is 1.5 miles off the pavement and only accessible by snowmobile in the winter. The more woods the better :-))

People have lost the pleasure of accomplishing something on their own. As an example I can spend all day working hard at something like splitting firewood and it makes me feel good inside and out then and later again when i use it.

I had a roommate once who was a genius with computer software and well on her way to a real good income. Came home to her trying to put up the curtain rods. Screws and a Hammer. I laughed my butt off. Another time she was trying to cook and set off the wall fire alarm. She could not figure out that you twisted the cover and could take out the batteries. she ripped the whole thing off the wall, mounting plate and all and was holding it between her legs in the folds of her long skirt and it was still shrieking away. I opened it up took out the batteries and when we could both hear again, asked her what the heck she was doing. Spent the next afternoon trying to teach her how to repair drywall. Thanks for bringing back some hilarious memories.

I really love to hear things like that, hearing about your feelings, about your experiences, how you see things, what you value greatly, what you do not value, and the very good things in life!
I could sit at a fire, listening to all these stories for hours and years!
Please, tell us all about your heart so I can imagine sitting right with you at the fire, and listening.

My son built a can solar dehydrator which really does work even in the winter. Yesterday's temperature was in the low 40's and the solar heater was over 100*. We painted the cans black and they radiate lot's of heat. We also made a roll of black PVC, laid it on a small shed and it really heated the water inside of the pipe. Fun and proficient. simple.

You are so right. There is something so special about being outside in this amazing world that God has made for us at dawn and dusk. Things are happening at these times that don't happen during the middle of the day. Too many of us (myself included!) are still sleeping, or in the evening, too busy to notice but when I was younger, I was an early riser and always outside. When I do take the time now to go out during those times, my outlook during the whole day is so much more alert and appreciative for all that God has provided for me.
