MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
Video of icebox:

Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

I love Frankie he is one smart dog. He works better than some people, and works well with you on collecting fire wood that's so cool.
+tom noeldnerr He's good with most things except power saws :-)
Really like your point on people missing out on the joys of doing things for themselves! There is a lot of satisfaction in doing things!
Yes indeed. A lot of folks miss out on this.
You know it's just amazing how smart Franky is you know he watches you break twigs and put them in the bin then he imitates you and does the same thing , amazing , also great food thanks .
He's tough on a 6 pack though...
And how can you not love Franky. What a show off.
Your videos never get old. I have watched this one at least once a week for about a year now. Thank you for giving me the ability to make it through these days living in the city. Your wisdom and positive thinking sure has helped me be motivated and have faith in my future dreams.
Glad you enjoy them :-)
Your conviction and enthusiasm about the life you’ve created for yourself is so fun to watch. You’re an inspiration
YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!!!! THE MORE NATURE LESS PEOPLE THE BETTER
The more I have to deal with people, the more I appreciate the company of my dogs. People ask me if i get lonely. There is a huge difference between being alone and being lonely. I'm lonely in a room full of people. Alone with my dogs in the woods - I'm in heaven
+chinookvalley Couldn't agree more my friend.
Awesome comment. I have many pet birds and they’re wonderful company. Won’t get into others in my house, but I’m never lonely. I’ll take pets to people any day.
Amen 🙏 Amen 🙏🙏🙏
I've watched every one of your videos an I always come back to this one. When I m feeling down it always brings me back to where I need to be . Thank you . God Bless
This is one of my favorites also. Always feel better after watching it.😊
Amen 🙏 Anen🙏 to that Sooooo true🙏🙏🙏🕊
Just when you think they can't get any better an I watch this one...this is the simple pleasures of life. So enjoyable!! Keep emm coming Boss!!
Thank you
Is 't it amazing when you are out in the woods how often you just pause and stand there in awe at what God created for our enjoyment?
Amazing indeed :-)
Frankie is the best!!!!! What a canine friend you have!
That's what he tells me :c)~
@@thebossoftheswamp doggie knows best!
Another great video. I certainly agree with your thoughts on money. Simple pleasures like cooking, camping, cutting and burning firewood, hunting etc. really gives a person a sense of self worth, pleasure and just a real sense of accomplishment. Real feelings that money cannot buy. Frankie is sure a great helper! Thanks for sharing JC all the best!
What a great life! I smiled the entire time watching. The day people can't appreciate the simple pleasures will be a sad day indeed! Frankie is awesome!! Thanks for sharing your amazing life.
+resourcefulgirl Unfortunately there are lots of folks that can't appreciate simple pleasures. I stay clear of those folks :-D
Excellent video. Ignore the trolls who know nothing about you or your life...or even their own! The happiest part of your spirit shines through. We create our own lives, or we moan about those that have... be well
+The Ramblings of Bry Very well said. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Oh Boss, I'm now the same, Greetings from Prince Edward Island!!, Food cooked on woodstove for me, hot water for dishes on my Regency mid size.
Wisdom nugget: "I am so thankful that I have structured my life in such a way that I can live unstructured"
Unstructured is awesome :-)
Isn’t that just great 👍
Another Bossoftheswamps great video of so many. I challenge many subscribers to partake in viewers marathon to support a true off-grid individual who enjoys living with nature.
Thank you for that :-)
It warms my heart every time I see the joy your life out there brings you. Please keep doing what your doing, it's like a breath of very fresh air! Tell Frankie I think he's so smart and just too cute!
+Amethyst Sky So glad you enjoy them and thank you for saying so.
That is one amazing dog.
thanks for making my day with another video.
And your right, money doesn't buy happiness.
Have a Jesus filled day
Greg in Michigan
+Greg Homestead Blessings to you too my friend
one of my old favorites , this video , thanks again
If ever there was a person on You tube...who has found happiness....it would be you...my friend. I'm striving to get where you are.
+Jim Wilson Touche!
+Jim Wilson It can happen! I'm finally where I can spend more and more time at my mt. cabin as I get less and less attached to the "real world". I do woodworking vids there for youtube and it's a slice of heaven. Set your goals and then work toward them. You can get there!
+Jim Wilson And I'm pushing for you Jim. keep on keepin on.
You hit the nail right on the head. (Yes a carpentry pun). One time at deer camp I was making something, can't remember now but it was some type of thing that was needed. My friend looked at me and said "You know they sell those things in stores". I tried to explain the personal pride from doing something for yourself and making it useable. Fell on deaf ears. Yes he has money, and no he is seldom happy.Simple pleasures are the answer and I enjoyed your video as always.
+Mark Augustus There's nothing more rewarding then making it yourself. Thanks for commenting :-))
Dawn and Dusk my two favorite times of the day. Frankie the Million Dollar Dog. The winter woods has always gave me a peace in my soul. The aroma of a meal cooked with love always gives me thanks. Common sense and a can do attitude is a gift from God that no money can ever buy. You are truly a treasure Boss. God has Blessed you well.
Thank you my friend and blessings to you as well :-)
Thank you for this video :-) 👍
Great vid!! I really love the sunrise you caught on camera. I agree with you on having more money does not make life more enjoyable. I think in the modern hussle, and bussle world people are missing out on all the simple pleasures of life that GOD created for us. Keep up the good work!
+Walter Bowens Yes indeed, the simple pleasures are often overlooked.
WONDERFUL video packed full of lots of wisdom & good old common sense! Thank you.
that's why we went to a smaller home and off grid. a much simpler life and less money required to live. that's the true ticket to a happy life. less is more!!!
+Bill and Rosa Off Grid Homestead Absolutely right.
The most important lesson in life, no matter what you do, is to be happy and it only comes within each of us.
Very true :-)
You really help me see that's it's okay to do nothing every now and then
+frigginboom We should all do a little more of that.
Gives your mind a chance to reflect and evaluate. Know what I mean?
You said right Sir, money is not what you need for true happiness. The completion of a simple or complex task warms the soul and makes one complete in my thinking. Thank you for your time working on these video's and passing them along for our enjoyment. A walk in the woods gives me the same peaceful feeling I use to get when I was traveling the oceans of this world. Thank you again...
Great video, JC. Love watching you and Frankie, and listening to you philosophizing about this and that. Keep 'em coming!
ATB
Ron
+Ron Johnson Outdoors Thank you Ron. All the best to you.
I was blessed this year to have been able to stay at my cabin 5 weeks. I went to deer hunt in our season and I got a lot of needed work done on my cabin some I didn't even knowing there were problems, Flying squirrels in the attic was a top priority because they kept me up all nights with there chewing. I patched up everything except for there main hole then when I was sure one night they had all left for awhile I plugged up the last place, After that I was able to start sleeping all night long LOL... I painted and caulked and spray foamed, I kept busy but I had the time of my life. Now I am looking forward to my next long visit after I spend a little time back in my house but I will be back up as soon as money allows, LP gas, more paint, Solar parts. Its all good. I really enjoy your videos and told my son about your ice box, we are thinking of trying something like that now under our stairway on an outter wall. Thanks again for your video.
Flying squirrels burnt my house down back in 05. Good move getting them out.
Merry Christmas.
Your videos always make my day. Thank you for your time and effort in making them.
I am so happy for you! That is my dream too. Trying to pay off old credit cards from a long time ago when we were in a hard place so I can get my dream home in the country. Simple living is the best. Trying to get there. Love your videos :)
+Kristie Blankenship Best of luck with your new direction Kristie.
New to your channel and loving every moment, youor so right, nature is beautiful and it takes alot to make people happy, I am not sure what that means any more, :(
Welcome to my channel Blondy :-))
Yours are the only videos I have an alert sent to my email for.. Your videos show a slice of a lifestyle. Your on a course I sometimes yearn for. You are not judgmental in expressing your viewpoints. It's good if they make people think and perhaps evaluate their own lives and priorities. Certainly some will decide they like their lives the way they are. I find your "back to basics" philosophy refreshing. I have never once thought of you as a recluse. You relate to all of us very well. Many have trouble spending big chunks of time only with themselves to me that demonstrates a person a peace with themselves. Of course some withdraw because of their own demons but that is not you. Take care and God Bless
+Sprintmanpsd Thank you for sharing your thoughts. All the best to you.
JC: Thanks for all your postings. I can't get out and about anymore and it is so frustrating for me but your videos really make me feel good. Thanks JC!!!!!
Glad you enjoy them Chris and thank you for saying so.
Amen 🙏🙏🙏
Awesome dog!
Great stuff there Boss and good on you for following your childhood dreams. I'm at a crossroads in my life right now, that has me thinking of retiring this summer and moving back home to start the next chapter in my life. All my children will be between 19 - 27 years old and my folks sure could use an extra hand around the house with their poor health conditions. If I work just another 5 years I'll have the same standard of living I have and enjoy today. However, like you say, money is not everything and you can never time back. In 5 years home will look a lot different then it does right now.
+NLGhostWolf Best of luck wiith your decisions my friend. Remember, life is what you make of it.
Amen, JC!
I love the winter woods too and I can pretty well set the clock by the coyotes around here.
I can hear their yips and howls as they come running up the "holler"! Kinda makes your hair stand up 😳
The woods in the winter is so different from any other time and I thank God every day that I am blessed to live in the middle of them.
God Bless🙏
frigginboom. .hi...I live in a cottage 100 meters from the Indian ocean sub tropical...on another continent...a remark on your comment...try live where it's OK to do something SOMETIMES!!!! I wake up with everyday free and open to me ...it's beyond beautiful..and I'm dirt poor.. my days are jam packed with joy and peace...love and light..peter
So glad i found your channel sir...its a pleasure to see You and Frankie in peace and happiness out there. somehow I feel the glow of your happiness reaches out to us all over the world.greetings from India.
+Shompa Saha Welcome to my channel and thank you for your kind words.
Those final comments are so true, I have worked in a lot of houses here in the UK in the affluent south where both partners work but do not see their children, they are always rushing around and never seem happy always wanting more. Most are what I call pen pushers with only paper shuffling as a skill, wifes have even said my husband is a liability with a power tool in his hands, seems its the same the world over....... Frankie cracks me up.........
Greetings Jim and Lori, I just found ya'll a few weeks ago, so I'm working on watching all the old videos and newest ones too. I really enjoy watching ya'll. I bought the vol. 1 Firefox book. I'm looking forward to reading it.
I envy your life and I'm grateful God put you and Lori where you are and that he has given you the grace to show everyone what a life of living in harmony with his creation should look like. My grandson watches with me and I hope someday he can find a way to live his life this way. God Bless ya'll.
Thank you my friend :-)
Man, this is a great video! I love how you analyze various simple things in Nature, like the water vapor coming from the roof in mid-winter, or the coyote howls making peaceful but haunting calls. I share your outlook on life...It may be nice to have money, but it's the simpler things that make life enjoyable. Good on ya, as we say here in Newfoundland.
Money is great but freedom is greater. Life is what you make of it.Cheers :-))
We are kindred spirits. There is no doubt about it. I'm living in a cabin that is half the size of my former home, out in the middle of the wilderness and living a simple life. Never been happier. Enjoyed as always, my friend.
+Gardening With Puppies No time like Cabin Time. Life is good :-))
Your philosophy on money is spot on for sure. I see it the same way, I have to be inventive and go by my wits when tackling a project that requires too much money. And I enjoy the outcome when I come up with something that is better off than anything in the store because it's personalized to my liking. I think that could be said for all of the wood work you do, which is very nice btw. Keep on keepin' on and maybe one of these days people with arbitrary possessions and dreams will see life simply again and we can all just get along.
+Icarus Burning If people would only treat others the way they want to be treated, the world we be so much different. It's just that simple. Thanks for commenting.
The satisfaction of what you have done by your own hands is worth more than the money you could to pay for it. That's so true!
+Alexander Masalow Well said my friend.
Hope you do a video with the solar can heater, I told my husband he needs to do that for his workshop:)
People who don't go out into nature have no idea what they're missing - it's magical 🌞🌞🌞 I absolutely love your setup 🌲🌲🌲
+Christina Coloradoan Couldn't agree more.
Epic video video buddy.
Never have I hear such truth spoken.
Enjoy that meal.
Regards
Mark
Sooooooo UPLIFTING!! Thank you 🙏 AGAIN an AGAIN!!! God Bless an HEALTH to you an Lori an Pups!! 🙏🙏🙏🕊
I feel frustrated! I want to click the Love button, but the like button is all that is offered.
Boss, you have such an eloquent way with your words. “The more money someone has, the less they know how to do.” Isn’t that the truth. I’ve done well for myself over the years, but I’ve done even better by having some practical skills. I work on the cars, can do basic electric work and plumbing, do my own yard work, etc. the knowledge, will, and enjoyment I receive from doing these projects has saved me countless thousands of dollars. I’ve never made a tremendous amount, but I have a lot more to show for my earnings than people who make a lot more than me. Boss, you’re an inspiration to us all! God bless you and yours my friend!
Good points. I'm also familiar with well-to-do folks who are impossible to satisfy and whinny. I stand back and wonder what happens at their home when the electricity or water goes out, and what will happen when it doesn't come back on... Maybe Frankie can bring them some firewood!!!
+Christopher Bormes Your Frankie comment made me laugh out loud. I went visual with that one ha ha
They'll just burn the house down.
I agree. Less is more. And knowledge is key. Happiness is pride in what you can accomplish. Love the video. More people need to see and understand this message.
I think you coined it in a previous video "accumulated wealth" but rich is the man who has found peace with in himself. You look very rich to me! Nice job on the work shop!
+Owen4it Very well said my friend. Thanks for commenting.
It sure is what a breathtaking view best life can get is when you are completely content with what you have and the life you are living can never get any better than that
I suppose that if people from 200 years ago, could see what you have today, they would consider you a rich man. Of course the simplicity of today is rooted in the advancements we make of the simple things for life. But there hasn't been any advancements in a Sunrise or Sunset for billions of years, yet some of us know that if "it ain't broke, don't fix it". Rock on Boss!
+Don Wilson (diggin Time USA) Amen!
A friend showed me this video tonight. It made me so happy to watch Frankie and hear you talk about the simple, but so truly important things in life. Nothing means more to me than my love of God and my children snd grandchildren. Simple, but they are the best things in Life.
Thank you for your comment ;-)
Nice work Boss. Frankie done well too
+The Woodsman School and Guide Service He loves that job :-)
....and he's pretty darn good at it. Very fun to watch him. Wishing you both well at the cabin Sir, best
Amen. I agree. I have seen that in myself if I am not careful. Grateful hearts leads to contentment.
Tell Frankie if he needs a job I'll hire him.
+Our Off Grid Life Hope you have a lot of tennyballs.
I can feel your joy : ) What would you do with a lot more woods around you? Frankie is a gem. Your videos make me smile inside and out.
+Sandra Hess I'd be that much happier. That's why I find it so blissful at my NH cabin. I'm surrounded by miles and miles of forest. My cabin is 1.5 miles off the pavement and only accessible by snowmobile in the winter. The more woods the better :-))
People have lost the pleasure of accomplishing something on their own. As an example I can spend all day working hard at something like splitting firewood and it makes me feel good inside and out then and later again when i use it.
+John Gallagher Couldn't agree more John. The only things I pay someone to do are things I'm unable to.
It's inspiring to see how happy you are in this video. You have the secret to a satisfying life figured out!! (Also, your dog is great!!)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Hanna. All the best :-)
if it all comes crashing down a lot of people are going to be in trouble....I see snow been warm here not much of a winter
+Pinetar And Robyns Homestead No joke there my friend. People lose all their food during an ICE storm cause their fridge won't work. Hello... it's ICE coming down :-/Sorry world we live in brother.
love the outdoors with you...sunrise so pretty...
I'd like to know how you got Frankie to pick up your kindling for you. We have a 3 year golden that loves to pick up sticks , he just won't give them to you lol. My mother use to call those people educated fools. Great vid.
I had a roommate once who was a genius with computer software and well on her way to a real good income. Came home to her trying to put up the curtain rods. Screws and a Hammer. I laughed my butt off. Another time she was trying to cook and set off the wall fire alarm. She could not figure out that you twisted the cover and could take out the batteries. she ripped the whole thing off the wall, mounting plate and all and was holding it between her legs in the folds of her long skirt and it was still shrieking away. I opened it up took out the batteries and when we could both hear again, asked her what the heck she was doing. Spent the next afternoon trying to teach her how to repair drywall. Thanks for bringing back some hilarious memories.
If I had a million dollars, I'd buy you a beer....in person :) It's hard to think you're not doing it right Boss.
+backyardmeat Hopefully we can share that beer before we strike it rich ha ha. Cheers to ya in the meantime :-)
I really love your channel. I like you have cancer and are fighting it now. Never give up never Surrender
More money, more problems.
+Paul Gillett And more taxes paid. Cheers :-)
I absolutely love and look forward to all your videos seeing how u and Frankie are getting along, your a great story teller did u ever consider writing a book I hope I can be as happy as you some day all the best to you and Frankie till next time ✌🏻
+Greg Cline I do intend to write my memoirs someday.
My friends, just watched JC's vid again and I know why I subscribed in the first place. I don't need to comment on every disgruntled sole on the planet. lets let them feed somewhere else. I will continue to watch, and look forward to his next video. GOD Bless JC. and Frankie, Good dog boy.
Wonderful childhood memories brought back by your father's book. Thanks for sharing. That meal you made looks delicious and I could imagine the smells coming out of the cabin when you opened the door....delicious! Thanks again. Rick
+Rick's backyard garden These old books are such a treasure for me. So fun to look back on the past. Thanks for commenting.
Boss, this whole video is so on point especially at the end I can’t believe how happy I am living the way that we are living now cutting my own firewood everything that I do I appreciate and I think the Lord. God bless JC
You make the best video's man and I get so cought up in them that when they come to an end it hit's me with a sad supersize. Thank you again for the inspiration and the smile on my face.
+darfirst Thank you for your kind words. Very happy to hear you enjoy my productions.
Frankie is such a big helper! I could really use him around here...
11:24 "Have you ever noticed...The more money someone has, the less they know how to do?"
I really love to hear things like that, hearing about your feelings, about your experiences, how you see things, what you value greatly, what you do not value, and the very good things in life!
I could sit at a fire, listening to all these stories for hours and years!
Please, tell us all about your heart so I can imagine sitting right with you at the fire, and listening.
+Alki Malk Thank you for your kind words.
My son built a can solar dehydrator which really does work even in the winter. Yesterday's temperature was in the low 40's and the solar heater was over 100*. We painted the cans black and they radiate lot's of heat. We also made a roll of black PVC, laid it on a small shed and it really heated the water inside of the pipe. Fun and proficient. simple.
How awesome to get to live your childhood dreams.
+Nancy Skinner Very awesome indeed.
"I structured my life so that I could live unstructured". What a piece of wisdom . Your life is proof to others what can be attained with a vision and a goal and working steadily towards it. May you continue to enjoy it until your end comes. Thanks so much for sharing yourself. Be safe.
+radicaljoe Thanks for sharing your thoughts Joe. All the best.
I have a saying I love life every day because I am grateful for every thing that I have I don't have a lit of money but I am happy
+Mike Duffy Great saying.
life is good in the woods penns woods
Awsome deserved life man, you made it true !!! bravo and
God bless,
Hey Boss, good to see you and Frankie again ...you do a great job making these videos from the music to the info to the video footage, I can only imagine how much time it takes to make it all come together but all the hard work is well worth it for us and a sense of pride for you I'm sure as well like you mentioned in the video ...we all appreciate your effort to keep us entertained and full of knowledge..thank you once again and until next time. yessir
+ASCOTTY84 Yes they do take a tremendous amount of time to produce but I do enjoy the process and I find it very rewarding that so many folks enjoy them. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Most think that building wealth will get them whatever they want. I believe the search for peace and prosperity comes in ways that money can't buy. Thank you for living simply so others may simply live!
I couldn't agree more Jonathan. I know several folks that make ridiculous wages but all they do is complain about things and spend all week working. I don't see what good their money is doing for them :-/
how cute Frankie is chewing off the branches..What a good boy! Angel from The Bay
Boss, You are a humble ,common kind of guy, who is content with simple things and enjoys the awesome natur!! That,s living!! You,r my kind of guy, love your vids !! And Frankie is beautiful!!!
+steinderbush Thank you my friend.
The Animals don't run or fly from you because they can sense you are a good man a man of nature, you work from the heart I can tell you were getting a bit emotional when you were talking about that book you read as a child your a good man and Franki could not have a better owner and friend, GOD bless you both.
Thank you and blessings to you too :-))
I agree and the more they have the more they work to keep their possession and that causes more stress.
Nothing beats doing things on your own. Same as you I love learning the old ways. Keep putting out a quality product.
I learned how to make my own bread, my own pizza and so much more. Just making a bunch of bread for sandwiches and dinner yields so much pleasure to me. YESS'A, I am all in with you: Keep It Simple.
Simple pleasures offer so much :-)
You are so right. There is something so special about being outside in this amazing world that God has made for us at dawn and dusk. Things are happening at these times that don't happen during the middle of the day. Too many of us (myself included!) are still sleeping, or in the evening, too busy to notice but when I was younger, I was an early riser and always outside. When I do take the time now to go out during those times, my outlook during the whole day is so much more alert and appreciative for all that God has provided for me.
God Bless :-))
You are so right about the money thing..I am the lady from the suburbs that married the farmer and I have no money after having investments etc..and I am happier now and have learned so much in just 4 years of being with my husband best life ever!
Living the Dream...That sums it up right there Bossman...I admire you for following your dreams...
+Heith Gagnon Thank you buddy. All the best to you.
awesome vid jc...please make some more like this!! love it..
