What the boss is doing is creating leaf mold in place. I create it in bins, but I do use leaves to mulch. The best part is I dont even have to gather them. I drive around on garbage day in the fall and pick up all the bags of leaves I need for free.

I do it also …free from the neighbors…nice mold for my ground cover …less watering,less weeds ..in Toronto Ontario .
Does this work in raised beds. I am on rocky land mainly so I am doing no dig beds.
@@soniataitt636 Yes it does. You should mulch all growing areas including raised beds, and leaves are perfect for that. Cuts down on weeding and watering. The leaves will break down and help the soil. While not as nutrient dense as compost, leaf mold (broken down leaves) has important nutrients. Tree roots go down deep and bring up nutrients that are stored in the leaves. Its why forests have great soil.
I do this, but always go ask the owner’s permission. They always say yes, take all you want. I try to remember the people that gave me the leaves, so I can take them a few things I grow.❤
Hello, I was the only one where I live who was saving all the leaves in a big heap to use in my then just started vegetables garden, now more and more wake up. Lived in France for 23 years before coming back to the Netherlands in 2014. Learned a lot from the French, they called the leaves the black gold. You leave one heap for 2 years and use what you need and start another. All my kitchen scraps go into a recipient I made from a pallet, mix it with green and black you just scratch it a big and you find a mass of worms feasting, don’t believe all the idiots who tell you, oh no don’t put in meat, fish or citrus peel and so on. I start another on after oktober and if my bed are empty I put the ready one on my garden beds for the winter and cover with the leaves. Free and very intelligent.😂😂😂😂😂😂
So true. Just about everything goes into the mulch and fish is absolutely wonderful fertilizer. I don't throw meat in mine anymore because we have too many bears coming to the yard but we used to where we lived before.

We planted blueberry bushes and chose an area of the garden thick with leaves. Planted the berry bushes and put on a layer of compost. No weeds and the blueberries are coming in like mad!
I still recall a video of yours from many years ago - you were growing pumpkins and had to leave your homestead for an extended period. You came back to a full on pumpkin patch that had required no care from you at all due to your deep mulch method. I love it!

Boss, another method I've used with leaves is to put them in a barrel or large trash can then use a weed eater/whacker to chop up the leaves more which will accelerate the compost breakdown. Thanks for the video sir.

Just got my garden in this weekend , and iv'e use your method with mulch for years now . What a difference it made .
A lot of homesteaders are having problems getting chemical free hay the last few years. So ev1 be careful because some hay is being treated with Grazon which will kill your plants. Love you Boss & Lorie please be well🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
Agree. I mulched some tomato plants with hay and they all shriveled and died. Hay was sprayed in the field.
I was just gonna mention that we he said "cow manure", itll pass thru the cow if the hay was sprayed

My local town residents bag up there fall leaves for pickup..and me to pickup and move to my garden. First year I got and mulched in 170bags useing my lawn mower to mulch in. Now I only get about 60bags a year to keep weeds to a minimum and a lush garden.

Everything the boss said is common sense the absolute truth. The wonderful thing about this method it doesn’t cost any money it is just what you have around your property, It keeps the soil moist weed free,doesn’t get any better easier than that.

This is just what I needed to watch. My 3rd year of gardening chasing my tail. Thank you very much.
This is the first time I have seen one of your videos. I would like to know where you live. I live in North Central Arkansas and we get very little rain ever and especially in the summer. Plus it is VERY HOT! Not uncommon to have temperatures over 100° and not cooling off at night much...about 85°. And the humidity is stifling. We moved here 45 years ago and have tried every gardening method out there. Not much success. In south Texas it was hot but not like this and we had plenty of rain. Always an abundant garden. I think more than anything the success of your garden depends more on where you live and not so much on how you garden. Kinda like kids, how you raise them determines a little of how they turn out but the gene pool is more dominate. Just my thoughts, not even worth 2 cents.
So many factors will determine the success of a garden and the toxic rain and lack of bees we have now isn't helping. We live in NH and have also lived on the Canada border in northern NY.
And the proof is DEFINITELY in your Garden. BEAUTIFUL. The Green colors of your Vegetables in your Garden is beyond any Garden I have ever seen. 🥰❤️ So happy to see you both doing well 🥰❤️
Dandelions are delicious in early SPring. You should try them (if you havent already) with mashed potatoes and mustard pickles! (Yum) Great video!

I've been looking into this method for my gardens and my grass using nature's mulch, wish I knew about it before as it works so well, my gardens are thriving as is my lawn, I throw compost on my lawn when I aerate it, which i do myself. Your a smart man Boss loved this as your method does work.

Only thing I would say is leave the Dandelions. They only grow in soil where there is a Nitrogen deficiency. Once they have brought it up to par they die off. Besides the young leaves are good in a salad.
Never heard that about the nitrogen but I never really cared to eat these.
You can make dandelion tea from the flowers

That's exactly what I did last fall, cover everything with a thick layer of leaves and hay. This spring it was moist and weedless!

just yesterday me and my neighbor mowed lawns, i collected her grass too!! as soon as it dries out and i have a pile of leaves decomposing from last year.. its natures replenishment, in NW ohio we have horrible clay that doesnt drain well, some plants dont like wet feet.. grass clippings leaves all that makes the dirt so much more airy and nice, and its free!!
I really enjoy the wealth of knowledge you always share. If you find the time you should write a book with illustrations about your gardening methods. I'd buy it! Nothing can go wrong when you use 'logic' especially 'backwoods logic'.

Gardener's gold for sure. Here in Australia, our native flora is evergreen. We can only get leaves if introduced deciduous trees and shrubs are nearby.I have happily bagged leaves from public parks, ignoring ignorant stares. Mostly, I have had good luck except for high winds in spring. Love leaves!

Additionally. I am having a barnyard manure in stock and All my leaves from vegetables&fruits i am continuously giving in it. After approx. 3 days All leaves are “eaten” there. I mean the barnyard from horses. ❤

Hello J.C. and Lori! It's funny how as a kid, a garden was also one of my chores, and one I didn't really "relish" ;-)!! It interfered with baseball, and bike riding too much! Now, as a senior citizen, I enjoy gardening and tending to the plant life, sage advise, BTW.......!!!

I use this method with hay mostly but also with the leaves. I always have a thriving garden. A friend of mine planted their tomatoes this year a week before mine. Theirs are around a foot tall right now while mine are already 5ft tall. I don't use chemical fertilizer either. Just mulch. God bless and enjoy that beautiful garden 💜

@@silviapop Copper reples slugs. Old copper pennies, a strip of copper around where you plant so they can't cross it. You just have to keep on top of them. Check first thing in the morning and remove the slugs.

WOW what an AWESOME garden you have.
We live in South Africa 🌍 So we are new to gardening. We had to start from scratch in this new garden. We moved from Johannesburg to Kwa Zulu Natal two and half years ago.
Had to get used to a new climate which is quite different to Joburg. Flooding, hail and wind storms. Extreme weather.
Very challenging. But I love gardening and you have to pick yourself up and start again.
Here where we live they don't leave bags of leaves on the side of the road's. I have to rake up the leaves and bring the bags home.
We have a huge Maple 🍁 tree in the complex we live in, and I spend about an hour raking up the leaves. There is a local park a few mins drive from here, about 20 Maple 🍁 trees are growing there. Tons of leaves to be had. Last year collected many bags of Maple 🍁 leaves there.
Our daughter and son-in-law gifted me a vacuum/blower for Christmas last year.
Much easier than using the lawnmower. But the downside, I got plastered with dust from head to toe, and I have and have a bath. 😂
I started last year collecting leaves. Wonderful how the leaves have broken down, pitch black about 1 foot underneath the leaves. Lots of busy earthworms and grubs broke the leaves down. They did a great job.

This method has served me well over the years and you're right, as you dig into the leaves, the richer the mulch becomes. It's gardener's gold for sure. We sometimes rake the woods to get leaves and ground fodder. Raking is good exercise. Everything we rake up goes on the garden, leaves, grass clippings, tree bark, you name it. i have used that method for a long time on my raised garden beds and, i get the same results . i also do have a watering system that shots the water on the soil not the plants if it needs to have water
I'll collect leaves in the fall and bag them up for chicken bedding, and put that in the gardens. It has a little extra zing to it.
I do the same with the chickens.

I watch some homesteaders and they always mention you and how to compost like laying down cardboard, shavings and their homemade compost with some amendments.
Also just watched Kyle's Cabin ( adding on his cabin new baby coming) plus building another cabin, once again mention you about using bubble wrap among others . Plus a few others I watch in Alaska have taken your advice.
So obviously you've been a great teacher too many newcomers in the last few years, as for myself I've learned a lot.

Where I live now there are very few trees that drop their leaves in the fall. What I've found is that if you cut your grass every week, before the seed heads can mature, and put a thick layer of the clippings on the garden it will work the same way. Grass breaks down faster than the leaves will so I'm always adding more. A good thick layer prevents new grass and weeds from growing and my hubby is happy to not have to dispose of his clippings or weed wack around the beds. I'll place about a 4 inch wide layer of clippings around the beds and that gives the lawn mower enough room to get right up to the bed and not disturb anything in the bed. Anything that blows into the garden wont take root because the mulch is too deep. When something actually finds a way, it comes out very easily. Usually it's the ants bringing in seeds that grow and not seeds that came on the wind.
All my grass clippings go on the garden too. Great stuff -)
Please advise! How do I mulch the garden if growing from seed. My garden was so cracked and weeded last year ..that was the firsr year. This year I mulchhed in fall..not many leaves have broken down..we are at -35 in the winter.
I make compost on top of my garden. No till and plants grow like crazy.

It's definitely a no fuss garden.
I have been gardening for more than 50 years. I started at age 9. I negelcted to mulch for many years, and had lots of problems. I became much more successful when I started muclhng! My biggest problem is having enough mulch. I live in the NM desert and it is bone dry. I don't have enough leaves so I'm going to take your advice and try a layer of hay or straw 4 inches thick! Helpful video.
If you buy hay, be sure it's not sprayed with chemicals. Lots of folks sharing that suggestion.

We used to do the same but found this works better for us. The whole leaves provide better weed prevention and moisture retention and then break down on their own through the winter. A win win :-))
Well I’m finally making myself do a garden this year. Nothing to crazy 3’ wide by 24’ long, just enough to be able to pick some fresh veggies and have it manageable since we both work. Definitely will be using our leaves for this.
