My daughter is 13 and had no idea that there was segregation in the 60s and earlier. Apparently they don't really teach that or the holocaust much in school , because i asked a few 16/17 yr olds who also never knew about either thing. very scary - if they are not being taught about how bad it was, how are we gonna avoid it happening again - unfortunately, it's already started happening again with all the anti-white segregation and accepted anti-semitism.

Exactly, that is what's sad on the far right and left people are beyond stupid. When truth no longer matters people can be made to believe crimes didn't occur, elections were stolen without proof, officers died over the January 6th insurrection yet it was justified how? The same people who supposedly keep this county's institutions in high regard desecrate the Capital building and are seen as patriots that Trump wants to pardon. The left doesn't get off either for defunding law enforcement to the point where there is no consequences for any drug use or crime. The police don't even have the power to go after a shoplifter or car thief. Forcing woke diversity and transgender learning in schools that should be teaching core subjects not feminist ideology. The world has gone completely nuts.

But when most of the country - I'd sat 75% - act, think and speak as if they have NEVER taken a middle school civics course AND could not tell you the three branches of government if you spotted them the legislative and judicial!, then how do you counter or reason with THAT???!!! NOT condescend, BUT counter or reason. Thanks to Republican efforts to deconstruct public education in America through a myriad of ways, we now have the electorate that represents the WORST CASE SCENARIO to the Jeffersonian Ideal of what public education was supposed to ensure so as to maintain our "fragile" democracy.

The Year of Sanity coming from him and his team? How Orwellian! No mention of AIPAC buying up American democracy, no mention of attempts to stop showings of the film "Israelism" made by and about Jewish Americans and their shock at the realities of the vicious apartheid regime imposed on Palestinians. I like to watch Bill. He brings up a lot of great points, but he seems to generalize whole groups of people a lot more these days. He keeps talking about how 'all the young people, and everyone who goes to college, are rooting for terrorists to destroy Israel and promote open shoplifting' when that's not the case at all. Most people of this younger generation want many of the same things. There are some loud voices out there who try to make a name for themselves by spouting controversial garbage so they can get more "clicks" on social media platforms, but the overwhelming majority of people (I think) just want to see some more humanity shown toward one another and less of this "Us versus Them" mentality. It is possible to vehemently denounce evil terrorist groups like hamas, but still recognize that there are innocent children and babies, etc. in Gaza having 2000-pound bombs dropped on them with no end in sight. We should be allowed to be bothered by that without being antisemitic or "pro-terrorist". We should also be able to support Israel's right to defend itself and be allies to the Jewish people and recognize the pain they felt after experiencing a horrible terrorist attack that included the kidnappings of 240 of their citizens, but also critical of Netanyahu and his far-right government, just as we are of the far-right factions in our own government. We can hold two thoughts in our heads at the same time and not be bad people. I think Bill forgets that sometimes and promotes the idea that everyone is on the extreme-side of any issue.
    .
Also, I personally don't wear a mask anymore and sometimes still see people wearing masks around town, but guess what, they're not hurting anyone. If that's your big concern with the world, I don't know what to tell you.

Bill Maher is a great comedian, and I have been watching him for decades. Great comedians make witty observations about society and the world, and points out the ridiculousness of it all from their perspective. They hold up a mirror to us and show us our absurdity. I love it. Behind the punch line, however, there is often a gross mischaracterization of serious issues, and Bill does his share of it. He often mocks his own straw men . We groan and shake our head, but we laugh anyway, knowing there is much more to the story. In any case, making us laugh heartily and reflect is high art, and Bill Maher is a master of it.

This monologue should have included that we need more than two main political parties. We have third parties but these main two, and the states, do everything they can to keep them off debate stages and even the ballots. They lack funding because they can’t get into the debates and be seen as serious.
The massive polarization we have is a result of only two parties. We need a party in the middle ground, one that rejects the insanity that those on the far edges have created.

There is a saying......Lead, Follow, or Get out of the way. Third party candidates should run as a Democrat or a republican and may the best man or woman win. More to the point, the two party system exists because of first past the post elections. You can try to make all the extra parties you want, but as long as the biggest party takes it all, splitting votes is political suicide and you'll never get a viable alternative.
That is why, for example, an independent like Sanders runs for president for the Democratic party and not as an independent. If Sanders runs independent and takes his followers with him he guarantees a Republican wins.

I'm not fighting you. I'm engaging in this convo to learn. My question is, then no one should highlight the absurdities of the world? I agree with you that, in general, if his show was not about scandalous topics that his show wouldn't be as much of a hit as it is right now. What's wrong with highlighting the madness of the world. We need to know these kinds of things. Also, at the end of the day, it's just his opinion, one perspective. No one should blindly follow a media figure. We use our own experience, and rational skills to make the end decision. I would never blame him for the world's madness. I'm an adult, therefore I take responsibility for my own actions. If I produce "madness" in the real world, I can't blame Maher.
