  • Jazz piano lesson on Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island. In this lesson I show you how to play Herbie's iconic piano riff, and some ideas for improvising over the chord sequence. I've listed the scales mentioned below for quick reference.
    Fm7 - F blues, F dorian
    Db7 - Db mixolydian, Db mixolydian #4
    Dm11 - D dorian, D minor pentatonic

    Hi Olly, thanks a lot for this excellent piano tutorial. From my research on Cantaloupe Island, it is by far the best video, I could find. I very much appreciate your way explaining and showing the riffs. From my point of view, you hit the proper balance of sequences between playing as a master and how a beginner should start. As a second keybord is shawn, there is no problem to see, which notes you play. Go ahead and again, thank you very much. Well done. Cheers Heinz, Germany

    IN the Db section (bars 4-8) your right hand is a third too low. The top notes should be Cb, Db, Eb. It's a common mistake 🙂

    Congrats, so clear! Just a mention: I observe that in your interpretation, and similarly in some transcriptions, the riff is different from the original record of Hancock. In his version, the right hand doesn't play the last quaver in each measure (notes Ab + C in the first one, for example). In this last quaver the only sound is the bass F. Maybe it's kind of a "mental sound effect" that your ear listens to F and re-build the Fmin chord, but it you pay attention, there is no right hand in that quaver. Even in some variations of the riff in live concerts, Hancock repeats at the last quaver time the previous one in the right hand(Bb + D), but never Ab + C...

    • @ollyonpiano
      @ollyonpiano  3 роки тому

      Yes you are totally correct - it's more of a habit that I play this last quaver now since I learned it this way years ago

    • @MojocasterOo
      @MojocasterOo 2 роки тому

      Yep, I bet that F Ab C is in the head of many. It's almost as if it was harmonically suggested.
      I found easier to learn the rythmic pattern with it.
      Good call!

    Very nice, clear breakdown. I really liked the pace of the tutorial, and the fact that you specifically called out the scales you were using for improv. Question, when you modulated from playing the Dsus chord in the left hand to the Ebsus chord, did you move to the Eb dorian in the right hand, or something else? Thanks!

    Great tutorial, very in depth. I’m now committed. to learning both the piano and this awesome piece.
    I’ve always loved this funky, hard bop piece since I saw Herbie on TV demonstrating the Yamaha MIDI grand piano (I think this may have been filmed at the Sydney Opera House). He did an interpretation of the original, I think a bit different than this which is like the original tune. Anyone else remember this?
