It´s not about some "Olympic Ruins", it´s about the whole former International Airport area. And it´s not just about a Casino. It´s a mega project including parks, public spaces, skyscrapers, residential & office buildings, malls and the coastal front.

Not any Greek worker wants to work for so low in a country where the basic needs, rents, food prices are artificially inflated to benefit the rich and are leaving the country for good.

Define "social housing." Does it have the same meaning in Greece as elsewhere? And would the housing have a more positive impact on the people that live there and the environment around them than would a project as described in this video?

@@Hyakman5408 Why wouldn't it or couldn't it have a positive impact? Social housing isn't slums, as long the developers and architects don't make it slums. • @Hyakman5408

@2nd3rd1st That is why I'm asking for a definition of the term "social housing." It can mean different things depending on who is providing the definition. Where I live, it means housing subsidized with taxpayer dollars for people who rely on welfare for part or most of their general living expenses. A few of these places that have been around a while have deteriorated noticeably in many different ways (unkempt, higher crime, drug problems, etc), which is attributable to the attitudes of that city's government and populace. But I can think of 2 near my home (in a different city, not far away) that have gone up in the last 5 - 6 years that seem to be doing okay, and have thus far not allowed their neighborhood to follow a trend toward social and economic decay.

You can immediately tell this guy (the creator of the video) is a smug bigot with an anti-greek agenda just by the title of this video, so dishonest, misleading and offensive. Even though he wants you to believe that it's all about a casino, that's only one, almost insignificant part in relation to the rest of what's being constructed with the Ellinikon Project, which is being built on the site of Greece's old international airport, where the name Ellinikon, meaning "Greek" in Greek comes from.
Firstly, the Olympic venues that were built on the site of the old Ellinikon airport were always intended to be temporary and up for future redevelopment, so it would have been more honest to say that they're turning the old international airport ,which was then temporarily used for olympic venues, into Europe's biggest urban development project. Baseball and other unpopular sports in Greece with their stadiums at Ellinikon were never intended to be permanent.
More accurately, this huge development will feature Europe's biggest coastal park, housing for varied incomes with Norman Foster's tower already sold out, cultural, social, commercial and business enterprise buildings, a state-of-the-art marina and no less the repurposed old airport terminal building by world famous Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, but no mention of such an important building in this video, just trying to make it mainly about a casino and with that to show Greece in a bad light, which of course translates to bigotry and racism. This major European development is also striving for environmental sustainability as well as being funded by private investment.
Secondly, the costs for the Athens Olympics has very little to do with the economic woes of the country, because as we all know now the Global Financial Crisis which led to the Eurocrisis was mainly caused by the irresponsible and greedy big banks' toxic investments on Wall St and The City of London and the EU having to bail those big banks out when those investments collapsed. In other words socialism and corporate welfare for the banks, debt and austerity for the people, which in turn influenced Brexit and other forms of mass opposition by the people towards the establishment. So even though we were told that the EU was bailing out Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain etc, we now know in hindsight that they bailed out thebig banks and there's plenty of credible reports online to prove it, search for yourselves and don't believe this hack who is just rehashing and perpetuating the initial dishonest reports and again proving how misleading and dishonest that he is.
Finally, if you think this is too much of a tall order for Greece to see through, just look into the SNFCC development , which has recently been established on the old horse-racing track site, also located on the coast of Athens and you'll discover a truly world-class, hugely successful, large-scale urban project that was also privately funded and rates LEED environmentally sustainable, designed by Renzo Piano. It has been called arguably the world's finest cultural complex, featuring a state-of-the-art opera theatre, concert hall, library, as well as a huge and beautiful native park with a recreational canal, a great centre of learning, recreation and entertainment for the people, healthy body and mind. The Greeks have this template to work from and not surprising that such a successful large-scale urban project has not been showcased on this channel because the bigot(s) that make these videos wouldn't want you to know that Greece is capable of successfully building and establishing world class and leading infrastructure like the SNFCC.

Βeing an amateur scholar of the world of construction and especially tall buildings myself, I am surprised by how inaccurate and misleading a product of one of the leading large construction video producers could be, even for the sake of good intentions, albeit not these being easily detectable in this video. Not by a long shot.
First of all, as many others already mentioned, the video should have focused primarily on the site of the Ellinikon, its history and development from the early 20th century airport, to the early construction works of what is to finally become an intelligent green city adjacent to the largest coastal park in Europe. This narrative might have been more preferable and contextually more accurate, rather than allocating half of the video’s running time into making bitter comments about the Olympic Games, which, despite their over-budgeted completion, have been a big success, and had all the prerequisites for their sites to become landmark venues in the long run, in the same manner that this happened in Barcelona and other Olympic cities.
The video could also, have focused on why Athens doesn't have any skyscrapers, with the tallest building to this day (the Athens Tower) dating back in the 1970s and being only 103 meters / 337 feet in height. Additionally, the video could have focused on why Athens chose a continuous building system, which, combined with a strange middle eastern version of the modernist architectural style, ended up producing a five-story cement soup where tall buildings may have not been allowed, but all the other shortcomings of dense construction, with lack of green spaces for large parts of the city, being there and tantalizing the city in a number of ways, including the creation of the heat island effect as mentioned in the video.
The video should also have not touched upon areas obviously its creators did not know about. Construction for the Olympics was but a small part of the causes that brought Greece to its knees and on the verge of default in the early years of the last decade. This happened mainly due to macroeconomic mismanagement, a sociopolitical crisis, and the deterioration of the country's economic indices due to oversized accrued public debt and lack of prompt response to the problems at hand.
Also, It is worth noting that the Integrated Resort and Casino is just ONE project out of at least a dozen of big projects to be scattered in an area of 650 hectares, and that this probably is going to be the only one of the two large casinos to be operating within the greater Athens area for decades to come. In this regard, the only risk factors for the project now, may be external related to imported price inflation and global instability.
Finally, a useful reminder about the delays that may take place especially during the early stages of a project, is that, Berlin's old Tempelhof airport ended up to NOT being redeveloped at all, but simply to have its idle open spaces available to the public for recreational purposes. Of course, Athens is a different case as it desperately needs to create a new modern urban footprint, and expand its green spaces to the fullest maximum extent, while maintaining a viable management and maintenance scheme for the viable sustainability of these large estates.
Please contact me if you need anything more specific about Athens. In the next few years Athens is bound to become a new case study of urban transformation, especially in the way that it may incorporate tall buildings within its existing urban fabric, it's outskirts, and outside its historical landscape.

Now, to the creator(s) of this dishonest video, try to show some rectitude and reword your misleading and bigoted title, that is if you have any decency about you.

The video has some innacuraces, at least the way it clickbaits the situation because the actual video is mostly pretty accurate. The area that these stadiums were build was the old airport of Greece. After the Olympic Games the area was misused and most of these stadiums were abandoned to ruin. After a lot of debate (and a shady situation considering that the project was given to a known Greek billionaire without a true public tender taking place. Aside from that though, the whole area will be turned into the biggest park in Europe, as the video says and the first true skycrapers of Greece will be build there, which are already sold as real estate. A Casino and a Mall will be build as well. The Old Airport buildings will be maintained and turned into a museum. A Marina and a beach will be made as well.

The Ellinikon Airport complex is not an "Olympic ruin". Of course there are remnants of olympic installations inside the complex, but it would be still an abandoned piece of undeveloped prime real-estate even without the abandoned olympic venues. It has to be repurposed into something that will be at least relatively self-sustainable both in terms of energy and of funding. It is currently a huge "gap" on the map of the city. The lack of parks in Athens can be attributed to the lack of funding required to maintain them, and in the absolute denial of a large part of the population to grant at least part of these spaces to private companies that would help them sustain themselves. A good example is the mess of the "Pedion tou Areos" park in downtown Athens. It was renovated solely as a public park for the Olympics, and then it was left to degrade into a place that you shouldn't dare venture into, due to the lack of funding from the City.

They're condescending because the maker of this video is and therefore perpetuates hatred. I made tihis reply. A bit long, but please try and read it for a better, more honest understanding.
Now, to the creator(s) of this dishonest video, try to show some rectitude and reword your misleading and bigoted title.

    The true Athens Olympic Legacy:
    the year is 2040:
And now Athens is the homestead of the Olympic games every time. Hosted by a different country, but, as respect to the legacy, it is always held in Athens.
History is made every 4 years on top of the previous ones.
Kids growing up, and becoming athletes themselves, will walk in the same hallways as their heros once did.
A true olympic place with a looot of true history on that spot.
    But no...
    Olympic games these days:
    Some newly build arena,
    where no history is made,
where nobody every has won anything yet,
    where budgets have been overspend,
and two weeks later it will all return to dust again.

I like how the clip says Greece has economically recovered when i just read an article from sept. 2022 where they write about Greece getting 290 billion euro during the crisis, of wich only 20 billion has been payed back to the IMF. Multiple European emergency funds are still waiting for 200 billion euro and different European countries, who lended money directly to Greece, are still waiting for 49,5 billion euro.
Not sure if u can call that an economical recovery, but maybe such a big investment and casino will speed up the rate of Greece paying of their debt :)

Lamda Development bought the land and will built private luxy houses and luxury hotels.... not the state. If they do not built it, they pay more. Also, most of the spaces for the retailers are alreaydy sold and bank central offices will move there. It is a PRIVATE investement for PRIVATE use except the park. And about the casino... it would be for the reach.... the prices will be out-mind. I made tihis reply. A bit long, but please try and read it for a better, more honest understanding.
Starting from the title, this video is completely wrong and lacks research. There is no direct relation between the Olympics and this project, apart from the fact that a few venues for niche sports were temporarily placed there. The casino is just one building that will be built to accommodate the needs of rich tourists. The majority of the space will be a park, next to one of the most privileged beaches in the Mediterranean sea. 5 or 6 buildings will be towers, and there will be also commercial usage with two malls, some office space, cultural spaces and sport venues, in order to make the park safe for use by people all day around. No public funds are used, and the whole investment is by private funds. The video tries to make a story out of nothing, and the title is a clickbait. And I don’t understand the negativity when a peaceful Mediterranean country allows a Development Company to build a touristic and residential resort that will bring thousands of work places to the locals, especially when many of the channel videos are on vanity projects in countries with questionable history on human rights. Further more reading the comments about social housing, “loans from the EU” etc, it seems that any person without personal knowledge is expressing their views. EU surely helped by offering guarantees on Greek public sector debt and indeed the Ellinikon Development will also offer some expensive housing options and most locals will not afford housing units that cost millions. But these real estate sales will fund the rest of the park, the sport venues, the center for persons with disabilities, the lake, the park, the new free to access sandy beach etc. The citizens themselves received a huge cut in pensions and social benefits and wages, but still most of them live respectfully and they can surely afford the small luxury of going to a mall or the beach or use the premises in a way that will make the project financially successful.

Yes, for Olympics spent money for stadiums that became abandoned, but also we built the Athens metro, Attiki odos (Athenian ring road), Football stadiums renovated and many infastructures upgraded. I am disturbed that this project's economic contribution is so focused on tourism
Tourism is one of the worst fairweather industries. Global economic disruptions effect it disproportionately and quickly. Weve already had three "once in a lifetime" economic meltdowns in just 20 years and now we're expecting a long term downturn. How does a casino plan for economic resilience when economic instability is clearly the norm for the 21st century?
A new district focusing on digital services and specialized in remote work would be a less risky plan. The country could finally stop the years of brain drain by investing in a sector that actually requires high standard of education
But no, let's build a nice big casino. I'm sure this won't promote gambling addiction that does even more damage to the local economy. Easy convenient access to gambling certainly hasn't fucked over Australia or anything. Definitely won't bleed money on the next global downturn either
    What a waste

Ok as an Athenian let me just correct everything you said. The area is an old airport. It needs to be revitalised. The government does not want to spend money on the revitalisation so it turns to the private sector. They want a big flashy casino in the middle of it similar to the marina bay sands. So be it. In return a large part of the project becomes a park, the main highway by the sea is buried underground for uninterrupted access to the seaside. The developer also wants to focus on housing, tourism and commerce. They can do whatever they want, the state is paying for none of it and is not responsible about what will happen in a crisis.
I agree that Greece is over reliant on tourism and should develop more resilient industries. But what does a district specialised in remote work look like? If it is remote, don't people stay at their houses? Well, there are gonna be houses at the site. Is it offices where people can go work for overseas companies? They'll have that too. The development will have a good mix of uses and while it does not help develop any new innovative industries, it is hardly the place to do so. That is a seafront piece of real estate in a residential area. What else would you use that for instead of tourism. It's a no brainer.
Here is my point of view. I personally get to have a park in my city without having to pay anything and I get a couple of shopping malls around it. It is going to increase tourism in the capital even if that means people are gonna struggle in the hard times. So far we've been struggling in the good ones as well because of a lack of decent jobs.
The casino, albeit definitely not something to be happy about, is not that important in the context of Greece's gambling problem which mainly revolves around sports betting which recently became available online. If I could choose between stopping a casino and stopping online sports betting I would go for the latter 100%. Unfortunately it seems both are here to stay.
Overall there are concerns with this project but the picture is not nearly as bleak as you are portaying it.

@@michaelpapadopoulos6054 sorry, I don't quite follow the logic here
Greece already has a gambling problem, therefore adding convenient accessibly gambling options doesnt make a difference?
Would you be willing to explain this for me?
By digital services focusing on remote work I mean attracting programmers employed by developers in other single market countries without local offices. Manhattan lost about 12 billion in tax revenue to remote work by being unaffordable and over specialized. Europe is experiencing housing problems all over; all any city really needs to do is be more affordable than than average now

It is not Olympic ruins. It is the former airport Hellinikon. Government claims it is a big investment but is just a casino. The 5 millions square meters land includes ancient items was sold for nothing to investors. This is common for public assets during the occupation by the so called lenders of ECM and EFSF. Before that there was an investment in Skouries Chalkidiki where the nature is being destroyed.
As far for the bankruptcy it happened because Greece joined eurozone and in 2008 made public the banks publ by publishing collateral bonds for banks debt. Until then Greece had debt like 60% of GDP.

It's a disgusting sell out of public property to private interests and a lost opportunity for a city with one of the lowest rates of green per kapita to get a big park for all the locals.

It does seem to be quite low density.. is there not a housing shortage in Athens like there is in the rest of Europe?
Not saying it needs to match the insane density the rest of the city has, but if you're in a park look out over a row of buildings, a couple of extra floors and less green space in between the buildings (connect the buildings into blocks) really doesn't matter much for the experience, but it can make the housing sections denser. Which in turn gives more usable green space that is fully connected to each other. A park with a lot of buildings in is never really considered an actual park because closer to the buildings it feels like you're walking through someones front yard.

Normally Athens don't have housing shortage, but state, owners and investors of real estate want to use every apartment for tourist rentals or long term rentals for wealthy individuals. That will create problems as the workers from the countryside or immigrants are struggling to afford rental and living costs with salaries ranging from 600 to 900euros p.m for ordinary jobs.

Who else saw the title and thought Greece was about to demolish some historical artifact from Ancient Greece to build a casino?

Fred Mills the creator of this video (look up his profile online if you like) has used nazi-type hate rhetoric, both overt and dog-whistle, to paint Greece and Greek people as the "detestable other". His choice of words, the questionable clips he used, the rehashing of false reports that we all know now to be untrue or at the very least debatable, the sheer lies about the project, including the title, the editing, the smug and supercilious tone, as well as the tropes throughout the video, proves it. Instead of focussing on what could be coverage of an amazing project, he has instead used the opportunity to attack and belittle Greece and the Greek people and with that shown his true racist colours. How does anyone get off on doing someting lke that? What an appalling, pitiful little man he is.

Athens Greece does not need skyscrapers. It needs parks and housing for the the Greek people. I’m sure that’s what Onassis the owner who donated the airport would
have wanted for his land given to his people not casinos for the rich

I've always thought the Olympics should just be permanently hosted by Greece. Building stadiums and accommodation anew every 4 years in different cities is a massive waste of money, and if anywhere should host it, it ought to be Greece.

This video constantly shows the OAKA stadium in Athens while talking about Olympic ruins. Meanwhile, this stadium has been in constant use after the Olympics by football teams, concerts, and all kinds of huge events. Also, the Greek state was not paying for its maintenance for many years, since that was a job that its hosting football teams were obliged to do. This video is full of false information and oversimplifications that paint a negative image of Greece that does not really exist. Also everyone should keep in mind that the Hellinikon is not a project payed by Greek or European people's tax money. It is a private investment and it should be judged as such.
