Well said! Except I don't understand your aversion to Dire Wolf (Woof). It's one of the best short Dead songs out there that always brings me back to that simple, happy, bluegrassy folky Americana Dead sound that I find captivating. It gets me singing and tapping my toes while singing about confronting inevitable Death in the form of 600 lbs of sin! To me it is one of the quintessential Jer songs, like Hunter wrote it especially for him. Irony and subversion of the cosmic order along with humor tighlty wound into a catchy old-timey tune. It makes me smile because I imagine only Garcia himself, knowing his time is up, would be playful and artful enough to invite Death in for a game of cards to have a little fun before he becomes lunch and he turns the whole cosmic order on its head by instead of surrendering to a nasty death, asking it to c'mon in and have a little fun first. It is always a first set pick me up (I haven't heard it poorly done yet) but if you don't like the tune, ya don't like the tune! (I for one despise Bob's early first set blues tune in the Brent era no matter which tune it is no matter what! And that "slide guitar" play?) I would rather hear a bad Dire Wolf every time!
Got to say I love the Hard to Handle in this release. Think it up there with Download Series Vol. 10 and Road Trips 3 number 3. Also, how come Vol 3 is bottom? Just not your cup of tea? I think it's a pretty decent '71 show not the best but it definitely has it's moments. Perhaps give it another listen if you get a chance. Anyway, have a nice day :)
