  • We invited Barbara Diethelm, owner of Lascaux Colours & Restauro,
to the Jackson’s studio to talk about the company's history and philosophy, the exceptional standards of their water-based paints, and their strong relationship with professional art restorers.
    0:00 Introduction
0:25 When and how did Lascaux begin?
1:07 The name Lascaux evokes the prehistoric cave paintings found in southwestern France. Why is it important?
1:53 Lascaux has been associated with some important artists of the mid-twentieth century. How did they inform the birth of the company?
4:33 Why does Lascaux focus on water-based systems? Why not make oil paints as well?
5:20 Lascaux is committed to a holistic company philosophy. To what extent do these principles flow into your daily work?
6:14 Each Lascaux colour can contain up to 20 different ingredients. Why is this?
6:48 Many of your paints are weather-resistant, could you tell us more about this level of quality in your paint production?
7:58 What different needs do restorers and fine artists have, and how do you cater for them both?
9:48 How does Lascaux ensure the environmental sustainability of their artist materials?
10:38 You are an artist yourself. How does this inform your philosophy of colour making?
12:24 You set up the Lascaux Foundation in 2004. Could you tell us more about the vision the foundation has?
13:18 What does the future hold for Lascaux?

A very convincing well presented interview where artists can buy your paint?

I’m curious, isn’t acrylic paint basically liquid plastic? And if so how is adding water to it any more environmentally friendly when you’re tipping liquid plastic into the waterways after after painting session? I tried to collect and evaporate my water when I used acrylics a few times and the water just stayed there in a cool climate. So the thick thick plastic you see when prolific acrylic artists evaporate their water after painting wasn’t appearing in my case.
I wonder if anyone plans to make an acrylic paint from some sort of corn based plastic and not petrochemical based plastic. Until I know if one then I won’t be pouring plastic in the water I’d rather just make pretty things out of watercolours or even oil paints.
