The name is actually pretty fitting, ain't it? Something like the game they advertised does not even exist in fiction, it only exists in dreams. Meanwhile the thing they actually sold was crap and people actually bought it in the hope of it eventually not being crap anymore.
if the devs are really serious about this and think it looks amazing they are smoking or taking something every time they work on, make a video or do anything with this game
As a former Game Development student (have switched to just Software Engineering since) I can confirm that this is pretty much true. At least the world itself, while the code was incredibly basic it would probably would take more than an hour to put everything shown here together. Not more than a day though. Edit: Okay, the sheer size of the level would probably make this take a bit longer than that, but the overall principles would be incredibly quick to reproduce.
@@sudanemamimikiki1527 Oh I know, I was correcting my earlier assertion that this would take a day, which isn't actually true. It would take a single game development student a LOT less time to make than it apparently took these guys.
Can literally see your head changing the light in the background and people still think its fake, then again people also thought Dreamworld was real, what a world we live in.
after 20 years of watching dimwits online scream "shopped" at trivial everyday things and the next moment ask if artist rendering of new planet or a dinosaur was "real", I'm not surprised by anything. one can only hope the idiocy isn't heritable but unfortunate side-effect of aspartame and sedentary lack of blood flow affecting brain function.

Literally a week of gamedev studies with Unity or UE4 for 2 hours a day would get better results. The material for the floor is just ONE shader which takes a minute to throw together. These guys are 🤡
The "buildings" that weren't store bought, are just squares extruded from a plane with the default new material set to white. Add the steps to export you can easily get that done under an hour.
Not even that its like the 10 minutes before class starts and you ask a friend to Copy their homework but they are an ass about it and take flrever to give you answers that you just start making shit up before the teachers in class
I did better for my college senior project in game design. In that course I had to do two games one on each half of a semester. including making the game and making a pitch video all solo. I feel bad for people who thought this would be something.
So I'm here a year later and this made me curious. So I looked it up. Dreamworld still exists AND is still apparently in active development. I know, my mind was blown as well. There have been a lot of improvements but that's all from press images, so I have no idea what the game's actual status is. Just kinda crazy that after such a massive blowback the game isn't dead
Man, I was worried this might be a scam but this looks great. The choice not to have any collisions on the building for one is a revolutionary one. The Artwork showcased at the beginning "Plaque in Progress" I know I will be spending hours wondering what the artist meant.
The fact that they used the default unreal engine mannequin with different colors truly says a lot about society, about how we may be different colors, but truly we are all the same.
And so thoughtful! My monitor only has a 60 fps refresh rate so I miss out on precious frames when I watch videos at 2x speed at 60 fps. But since this game runs at an extra-chunky 12-15 fps, I can easily savor every frame even while going at 2x speed.
Massive respect as well for everyone who dared to double click on that .exe on their own PC. I wouldn't have touched that thing with a ten-foot pole, unless on a VM.
The length this man is willing to go to prove him right is astonishing. He actually built a fake walls, filled them with games he got on craigslist cheaply or just empty boxes to a faithful reproduction of a green screen photo he had, and even made a miniature sign proving that other guy was wrong! Amazing, subbed!
What I find most shocking is the fact that these devs managed to screw up so hard that they made an extremely unstable game on a decently stable and very well-documented engine. You have to try to make something THIS bad.
Actually makes a lot of sense if you know how game dev works. 2D is a solved problem. You do batch rendering and on any integrated GPU that supports your framework of choice, it will push 30 FPS. There are some fancy things you can do that will hurt your framerate (particles, shadows) but not much. 3D is anything but solved. You have to do optimization. You an totally load very detailed assets with lots of vertices and mess up culling (the process of removing geometry based on the viewport of the player), level of detail (the process of adapting geometry based on the distance of the player to said geometry), "streaming" (in an MMO, basically loading the scene based on what is around you. Culling removed geometry that is behind you but it would be much easier to just not cull things if they're are further away from the player + viewing distance) and many other things and get disgusting fps. There are also some things hat you just need to know. I'm not an engine guy but I know a thing or two about rendering. Lights, for example, really hurt with forward rendering but you can do some modern rendering techniques and get some really great FPS. There's this application that basically reads your WoW map files and renders a continent with unlimited viewing distance. That's basically what this allows you to do. But you have to know about this. You have to actually set it up in your engine of choice. I'm 99% sure they just took very high detailed models for those buildings and stuff and just messed up there. But you can mess up even more but not doing indirect rendering and culling on the GPU and stuff like this. There are also some operations that are just very expensive. I don't know how unity abstracts those away but rebinding the same pipeline for every object is INCREDIBLY expensive. They could order their objects based on material, it's all good. But they probably didn't. They probably bind the pipeline every single frame and tank their FPS like that. In case that material thing is confusing: the material includes things that are basically shader arguments. Shader arguments are part of your rendering pipeline. So what you usually do is Render all your 3 objects, render all your billboard text (like player names) and then maybe you have a different pipeline for UI as well. Imagine what would happen if they did things like "render mesh, render name" so for every player, npc, object with a name above their head, they'd switch pipeline twice. Again, not sure if unity is hiding that (it should), but this is one of those things that a noob graphics programmer could totally fuck up if they just want to scam you assuming the engine lets you do that.
@@illseeyaonthedarksideofthemoon This dude took the time to type out some really good technical insights under a video about bad game development. Nerd emoji is entirely the wrong answer here.
@@robinkuster1127 >2d is a solved problem you can fuck up 2d too. It all depends on the density of objects in a scene. A very naive implementation which simply iterates over objects and draws them one by one will give you low frame rates in 2d too (been there, done that)

Exactly. As I said on another video, these guys come from moneyed families, they are not that dumb. I can’t say they went into the whole thing with malicious intent but I think it’s very naive to think this alpha is anything but them delivering just as much as necessary for the Kickstarter project to be legally fulfilled.
No kidding. This guy's greenscreen is next level. What a waste! He could have spent all the time he used mastering his deception to, I dunno, build a shelf and stock it with stuff?
I find it interesting that even Josh Strife Hayes, a guy who purposefully deactivates his computer's security for scammo's in his "Worst MMO ever" series does not trust this alpha enough to run it.
To be fair, can you even consider this an MMO? It's not even a game really. I've seen the footage and it's literally what I could do in less than a day xD
It’s so beautiful and immersive. The clipping, the walking on water, the seamless transition between biomes and the scale of objects and buildings.. I’m more hooked than the candy cane biome.

Not defending it, but still, finding the time to create this shit wouldn't be as easy as just jumping into UE4 slapping stuff together etc, it obviously took some time, as bad as it is, Just downloading half this stuff, putting it into your projects, combining them.. it isn't that easy, which is probably why they think they created something of any worth.

I remember when Second Life was still relatively new and had similar systems to this. And it was never, ever abused. Not once did entire servers get shut down by self replicating assets known as gray goo attacks. Not once did players market push guns to each other that would push another character so hard they would essentially be shot into space and have to teleport back. And no one ever, ever made a 500 ft tall Swastika visible to the entire new player and family friendly areas of the game.

Not gonna lie as a single indie developer who knows a bit about multiplayer, I could have made what they did in a single day at most. Clearly a scam now and people need to start refunding asap. This is why small games should generally be free to play with optional cosmetics to support developers.
The fact anyone even thought this was a legit kickstarter should question their financial responsibility. They asked for $10,000 and that alone should have been the first huge red flag. You aren't going to make anything for $10,000. Second red flag was that God awful video of him crying about his life. Anyways, there are stupid people in the world and apparently they had around $65,000 among them.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 'game' (which literally is just assets placed in a space, it's like an evening of work max) is just smoke and mirrors whilst the executable mines cryptocoin in the background.
No point unless there's thousands of copies distributed and even then people wouldn't bother "playing" this for more than 10 minutes so nothing of substance would be mined.
So much freedom you can walk through buildings! Absolutely revolutionary gameplay if you ask me. You can go anywhere, and jump around and dig holes and stuff. Wow, truly impressive.
btw I don't have much experience with unreal, but I CAN tell you adding collision to buildings is as simple as having a collision mesh (which you can get unreal to automatically generate for you) and pressing ONE button to make it detect collision
look at the FPS, for something to run that horrible that intentionally made it that laggy, cause a lot of those videos are from well known people so im sure they have pretty damn good pcs they caused all the lag and bad frames on purpose no way ANY game developer in the last 10 years made something that badly optimized on accident

A game that is considered "Alpha" in the gaming industry has to have all features and content represented in the delivery candidate. While some features/UI may be temp and not final, all features have to function and work based upon the design documents. This game is not an alpha. It is a prototype.
alphas are for making sure everything works, structurally and can still so yeah the features have to exist, they don't have to all function perfectly yet and there can still be a few added or removed alpha ENDS with a feature freeze I generally support even games going into an actual alpha and not an "open beta but don't be too harsh please" that being said if this is an alpha of the game, the game will be shit, this wouldn't even be a proper proof of concept
Yeah, this would not even pass the proof of concept phase of the design process, let alone be considered anywhere near alpha. Clearly, these scammers have no idea how to create a game.
It's not even a prototype. There is no game. There is nothing. It's a flat surface with some placeholder structures and the ability to spawn objects. That's not a game. This is very clearly something they threw together whilst having no idea how to use the software just so they could say they're "working on it".
this is practically akin to the *very* first versions of minecraft. you know, the ones where you were on a flat plane of stone/grass and could place and break blocks? The ones from LONG before even the first *ALPHA* version?
This looks like something a high school kid learning Unreal Engine makes for his student project with a bunch of free assets he downloaded off the internet.
I almost want to start a series where I, having literally no experience in game design or coding, attempt to create a game that is better than this....
Using Unreal Engine 4, that's a surprisingly simple task (I'm doing just that and would like to think it's better than this by far). That however makes this excuse for a game even more hilariously bad

I've done a game design minor, and what you have here looks eerily similar to what a student makes as part of an introductory Unity3D course over the span of 8-10 weeks while following a bunch of other classes.
8-10 weeks? Now i am sorry,I don’t have any experience about developing a game nor knowledge on softwares, but that “thing” there is something i can do in a day. Just teach me how to duplicate a big world and then I’ll do it.

So there we are. 2021 and despite the technical development on hardware and communication speed within the last years, we are faced with buggy software products and game releases that leave the paying customer with the duty of finding and reporting errors. Looking at the alpha of Dreamland brings me back to around 1999 when I took my first attempts on creating webpages, felt in love with Macromedie Flash and gathered experiences with 3D modeling software. Man I was so looking forward for everybody to have highspeed internet and a powerfull machine at home. It just wasn't there to that time, so it was always a struggle between fast loading pages and the loading content. A lot of compromises have been done in that time. From my viewpoint the result was the internet being flooded with webpages one being more ugly than the other. Somehow the same can be said about games from that time. Hardware like RAM, graphic cards etc. have been extremely expensive (at least for me). And the developers had to keep that in mind as well. And now that we have CPU's with several cores, each being capable of doing tasks that seemed to be impossible not that long ago, affordable RAM and internet connections that are getting faster and faster the industry wants us to go back to 1999. 😖😡🤢
"East teleporter, west teleporter" Hold up This looks awfully like a minecraft server spawn. Minecraft server spawns have actual effort put into them though.
Yeah. But then again, Star Citizen has six studios in four countries, close to 1000 devs working on the project. Not two. There's a real, massive development team with experienced staff working on... something. No guarantee it'll ever ship, no guarantee it'll be any good if it ever does, but it's certainly no Dreamworld.
I am a landscaper by trade. I have made a few 2d platform and puzzle games for fun. I am certain that if I sat down for one month with a budget of a few hundred pounds I could make something better than this. The only applicable experience I have is garden design and making levels for Blood and Duke 3D in the 90s. Even as a teenager with a 486 I thought about colour palettes and lighting.
Hi, I am a game dev, i work in unreal, have about 6 years experience in unreal as an engine and about 1.5 years in unity. For 4 months work this is disgraceful. What the game actually looks like is actually irrelevant, the problem here is, there is no game logic in place, no basic principled server logic and what appears to be no code at all. This is simply an empty world with plopped down pre bought assets. This kind of work would take about 45 minutes in the real world of development for a level design.

So i've been following this whole thing and i actually cant wrap my head around why anyone though the promo material looked good in the first place? Seriously, I've played a shitton of MMORPGs and even the stuff that was promised looked generic as hell at best, and just...Thematically crazily incoherent at worst. What is this game even?
The name is actually pretty fitting, ain't it? Something like the game they advertised does not even exist in fiction, it only exists in dreams. Meanwhile the thing they actually sold was crap and people actually bought it in the hope of it eventually not being crap anymore.
if the devs are really serious about this and think it looks amazing they are smoking or taking something every time they work on, make a video or do anything with this game
Friendly reminder that they have now given all kickstarter supporters everything they promised because all they promised was a playable alpha.

As a former Game Development student (have switched to just Software Engineering since) I can confirm that this is pretty much true. At least the world itself, while the code was incredibly basic it would probably would take more than an hour to put everything shown here together. Not more than a day though.

This looks awfully like a minecraft server spawn.

This game makes Starcitizen look like an absolutely finished game. I really appreciate that!
Lol!!! I was thinking the exactly same
Hell, it makes SC look well optimized, which... Isn't something I ever thought I'd say.
My wallet agrees with your sir
It is finished compared to this considering there’s actual playable gameplay in SC and a pretty expansive world space to explore

I got a degree in 3D Animation and Design, it's not even passable as an environment for 4 months of work lol.
My 10 years old self have made more cohesive game in scratch over the course of a week than what they accomplished in 4 months as a mature adults.
The candy canes dotted on the hillside really tie the game together. Glad it's looking so good.
All things considered that intro song was really nice to drive to. Got me all up in my head thinking bout my feels.

It's pretty obvious these scammers don't even have the slightest idea how to create a game, let alone an MMO. This wouldn't even pass as a proof of concept prototype during the design phase, let alone an alpha build for people to play.

That developer is a just a symptom of a larger disease - what gets accepted as a minimum viable product in the courtrooms today. Guys like these don't spend any of the raised capital on the development but a good part of it hiring lawyers who would help them lower the bar on the delivered product to avoid conviction.
It all goes back to tech corporations spending all their capital on shaming the gaming community into silence.
Either Taquito Bandito has mediocre eyesight or I have quite good eyesight cause I can clearly see Josh's shadow moved correctly on shiny box covers and appears completely different on wooden shelves, which is why I knew it was real.
