Love the history lesson behind this product. You should do some more videos like this with the back story of the products you open. The hard work put in this video shows.
yep
100% agree
agree
Agreed. I don't play anymore but the history on this video was amazing with the fun pulls. Adding some history to regular pack pulls would be a cool addition.
Thanks for bringing more attention to this. Upper Deck during that era made Konami seem like the villain out the entire time. Funny enough, 4kids also tried to embezzle Konami and other rights holders for Yugioh too, so really, there's been a lot of attempts to steal from Yugioh.
Ude was much better company tho their cards is perfect
Konami is still the bad guy in their own right. Garbage card quality the past few months/years, absurd rarity-jacking between OCG/TCG, and a severe lack of decent prize support among other things.
Shame really, the older card print quality and feel is so much better, they feel much cheaper and more flimsy these days, even modern starlights, ghosts and collector rares I can't appreciate as much as the upperdeck stuff.
The tcg side if the game is the cashcow while the ocg side is premium. They get all the cool rarities and affordable staples while we just take it up the bum bum with shit quality control damn near every set and shortprinted staples :')
100%
I didnt know it was possible to get worse quality than older card stock.
Compared to modern mtg and pokemon, the quality of modern ygo cards is still pretty solid.
@@hodlenbinglebutt1117 Fax. MTG card stock is so hit or miss. Yugioh card stock even today feels solid for me, now there maybe print errors and such, but the card itself seems structurally solid to me. Some new mtg cards im afraid to even flick them in my hand cuz theyre so flimsy feeling.
Pretty crazy, Upper Deck had all the means to print legitimate cards for this product, but they just went for bootlegs instead.
Thats what kinda baffled me too
Upper Deck didn't print the cards. The video got that wrong. Upper Deck was the Distributor. Konami always produced the cards.
You don’t see these opened every day!!!😍🔥
More like never
Thats cool, id love more of this style video because Id like to know the history behind the cards and sets in quick and concise formats like that
This was very interesting, loved the info and lesson on how to spot the little differences. I for one had no idea about this so it was nice to learn about
Really loved the info aft the beginning of the video to hype up the product you were opening. Definitely do more of this because it's great!!
Great opening ruxin - love that kind of stuff. Konami isnt a great company, and they probably deserve alot of the criticism they receive, but jeez, you almost feel bad for them with what upper deck was doing at the time.
Yoooo! That's my picture of the 3 counterfeit dreadmasters at 0:43 from an old reddit post I made 4 years ago. Super cool to see it featured hahaha
Let's go!!!!
I really can't understand how they could be counterfeit cards in the first place. Lower quality, yes, but produced by the company licensed to produce the TCG cards, and all the cards were TCG cards. It's such a weird thing to me.
Upper Deck didn't print the cards. The video got that wrong. Upper Deck was the Distributor. Konami always produced the cards.
@@SolidSnake9689 would you know why they printed 1st Ed with silver stamp then ? Thanks for the insight!!
They probably this on purpose to break their contract without breach
Wow as I've only just got back into opening cards I stopped collecting in 2005 but came back due to seeing your videos so had no idea of this situation hearing this history lesson was great I'd love to see more videos in the future like this great content :)
I loved the new take with this. Educational videos about yugioh interest me. I’d like to see more in the future!
These short educational videos regarding YuGiOh are so interesting. Keep it up rux!
Nice video, I loved older cards, and more nostalgia now when I look them haha, I think you need more videos like this, a history of TCG and YGO cards
Really good video, just recently getting back into Yugioh and I was wondering why do these new cards feel different, this explains why 👍
Awesome video Ruxin! Loving the different types of videos you've been posting recently. Keep it up!!
This was actually really interesting, I heard some things about those counterfeits but never knew the differences nor the whole story. Thank you for sharing and showing this, it was amazing!
It is a shame though, honestly the foiling on the counterfeits looks pretty good too... but well, life is life huh?
It actually does look good😂😂
I remember getting this pack with the Flame Wingman and Aqua Neos from Kmart. Always thought the silver stamp was weird, but the quality made it hard to think anything of it.
I didn’t know anything about this until now, thanks for the new info
Loved the intro, hope you do more of these! Learned something new, thanks Ruxin
That small history tidbit before the opening is pretty neat, very nice way to slightly hype you up before watching the pack opening
Loved learning the history behind the change in cards. Always wondered why the new cards feel different.
Thank you for the information i was wounding why the cards felt so off, now i know why!
I like the idea of a bit history before the opening part. Would actually love to get a little history lesson for some special items with a unique background story :)
Wow, you just reminded me I once bought one of these products or something similar way back when. The promo card I got from it was a Elemental Hero Tempest with a unique holo to the card where the whole front had a mosaic rare type of look to it, but with a star-like pattern. I don't have the card anymore, but it always stuck with me in my mind with how unique it looked.
Oh these are a legit card. It a mattel edition. Those are money card now. Also known as hobby league rare
@@calallen8786 lmao wow I haven't felt so disappointed in myself for so long until today
@@segomac96 let me see if I can find a link
Still a $23 cards
God I remember trying to go to upper deck day in NJ back in 2009 and when we got there, there was no event. Should’ve figured something was up
Such fascinating history about this product, I had stopped playing when I had gotten into high school in 2006. I didn’t know this had happened. I knew ppl were getting fake cards but I didn’t know how. Thank you for this history lesson. Aloha from hawaii 🤙🏼
My local card shop had a fake Aqua Neos in the case. He got it in the purchase of a bulk purchase from someone selling their collection. If you don't know about the counterfeit cards to begin with it is an easy thing to miss.
Great explanation, I didnt quite understand what happened when I watched Cimooo and MBT explain it
Never knew any of that. Thanks for the info Ruxin
Very nice video! Thank you for the information and lesson about upper deck :D
Actually dope, would like to have that flame wingman for sure
I got a huge flashback for when I was a child at a flea market I remembered the time i saw that exact same product wow what a flashback I dint remembered this at all I can confirm I saw this same product
From the UK! I bought one of these from Walmart on a holiday to Virginia in 2008 when I was 12! Didn’t realise this was tied to the upper deck drama! I still have a few of the fakes, including the Dreadmaster!
I would still keep those too bad my fakes weren't close to that lol
Idk since Konami took over the holographic cards look cheap to me and scratch super easily or maybe they’re more apparent now
Yea print quality is so bad now
Wow, I was unaware that any of that had occurred and it was definitely interesting to learn about O_O
Bro these duel king 2 blisters are so hard to come by these days. Amazing to see this get opened again.
This is the best video you've made man, great work and production. More of this when possible!
Thanks man!
Counterfeit, which nowadays translates to "we think we deserve money for artwork on cardboard, so only our cardboard with art on it is real."
Making cards which cost roughly fifteen cents to mass produce, and then attaching an arbitrary value based supposed value is the reason I start making my own magic and yugioh proxys.
I knew about this story roughly but not all the details so this was cool!
I remember buying one of those blisters in 2008 from Toys R Us, I remember it came with the 1st Ed Aqua Neos with the silver stamp and I think a flute of summoning kuriboh or Winged Kuriboh Lv10
Oh cool. I was second guessing myself for a bit when I could only find Dreadmaster stuff LOL
@@Ruxin34 I think it may have also came with Elemental Hero Electrum with the silver stamp too so these bundles had some of the MDP2 rares. Also, for some strange reason it included a couple of ultra-pro “mammoth rider” art sleeves lol can’t believe I remember those sleeves from 14 years ago.
I want to say the flame wingman and aqua neos were in a similar bundle (maybe like duel king 1 or something) because that's how I got mine.
Awesome history lesson here. I honestly didn’t know about the information you provided. Upper deck really threw away a good thing they had going.
Dang thanks for this explanation. I used to collect yugioh cards OG till gx era, then stopped. recently I opened up some new yugioh packs and could immediately tell something was off with print quality from I used to remember it. Didn't know all this shit happened lol
I actually never knew about this. Damn really informative thanks!
I can’t remember what episode it is but Patrick Sullivan talks about this on the podcast The Resleevables when he worked there
Before I even finish this vid......intro and back story was 🔥🔥🔥. Had no idea officially why Upper deck got the boot!!!
For upper deck they are also slightly thicker and weighted more idk if you said that and I missed it but that affected some playability cause there was some people stacking with them
Man I recently traded a Near Mint first Edition Ultimate Rare Flame Wingman to a card shop without knowing this. I went back and checked, sure enough it had a silver square at the bottom instead of gold. Kinda feel bad about it, but I did offer to trade what I got with the store credit back in, they wouldn't let me. (was an entire DPE package)
Props to you for trying to do right!
Very respectable! Glad you got to keep the DPE stuff
Great video! I always wonder what happened between upper deck and Konami. Thanks for sharing!
Damn, I wish I got my hands on those back in the day !
i noticed that on mine as well with the excelion ultimate rare first edition
That was interesting history of yugioh that I didn’t know about. Thank you ruxin for the information
I got a tlm elemental hero flame wingman ultimate rare 1st edition with a silver stamp. I was wondering why the misprint happend. Do they hold any value although counterfeit?
I hate that the counterfeits look nicer. Really goes to show how much Konami cheaps out on their product as far as manufacturing goes.
Those look about as cool as the different holo rarities in Cardfight Vanguard.
Well both the real and the counterfeit were printed by Upper Deck technically. They printed the original Wingman in 2006
wow I really like how you narrate stuff ruxin 😂 you should do more of that
I’ve always wondered what was the story on this. Thanks for the video Rux!
Awesome video, loving the Naruto Clash of Ninja 2 background music
looks real enough to me and it has all of the official game text
I knew the counterfeits existed, but never actually knew about their origin product. That’s really cool. Shame things happened the way they did though; I do miss the old UDE print quality compared to modern Konami printing
"in 2008, something would be released that changed everything" made me think of dark armed dragon lol
Nothing wrong with big openings, but this was a nice break, always enjoy learning about history behind certain cards and events
Wow what a fascinating product, so much history but also so confusing. Awesome opening, thanks for sharing this!
Maybe that's where the counterfeit Legend of Blue Eyes booster boxes were coming from.
Loved the yugioh history class. Keep it up ruxin.
Hi, i have in my collection a "Elemental Hero Aqua Neos" Ude (the eye of anubis is silver) PSA 9. What do u think?
Ruxin! Ezellent video. Haven’t seen you do a history video but you’re a natural!
That intro was nice. The history behind it was very interesting.
Love the video with the informative aspect.
My dad and I used to buy cards from the store open the packs, take out the good cards , then put some random terrible baseball or pokemon card in the pack, glue it shut and return it. Back when Neo Genisis was around. But it got to the point where we did it so often we started buying the packs we returned and just stopped all together. It didn't go on for more then a few weeks. It's a terrible thing to do but it is hilarious looking back. I can't imagine how pissed some kids must have been being hype to pull a Lugia and end up getting some random shit like a Houston Astros pitcher who sits on the bench the whole year instead.
Your dad was pretty pathetic
I remember hearing about the whole Upper Deck vs Konami thing back in the day but man hearing it and seeing these cards raises so many questions for me haha. What's the value on those counterfeits? Would companies grade them? Awesome video!
PSA has graded them, but they stopped doing it. So there are a few graded copies floating around with “deactivated certifications”
Dang had no idea. Thanks for the video.
Honestly really enjoyed the education portion of this video. Wouldn't mind seeing more of it!
Ohhh, I never actually knew where the counterfeits came from. Always just assumed they were in boosters.
Good job !! That was interesting for sure !!
Hey ruxin, i would love to See a "Cash back" series from you . You Start with a Budget (lets say 300$) and oprn Packs for that value. Then the combined value of the pulls is the Budget you have for the next week. The goal is just to choose good Packs with good value to keep the series alive. This could be a really sucessfull Format for your channel imo
My only issue is what happens if we pull like $4 on ep1?
@@Ruxin34 then the "season" is over and you Start New. But the tactic is to hold it alive, i think its Not as Hard if you have the right product. You can also grade the cards and get some more value of it. It probably works Best with newer or underrated products
Always wondered what happened between Konami and UDE. Appreciate the info
Never heard about that "scandal"... very interesting!
What a very cool history lesson! Love this sort of content
I wouldn’t mind you doing Yu-Gi-Oh history videos that intro is pretty awesome!
The funny thing with all of this is Upperdeck was the printer of the cards for Konami at the time, therefore the crime is actually not counterfeit it’s misuse of trust. Saying upper deck committed counterfeit is like saying the mint counterfeits, you can’t say the official flow is fake otherwise you admit all is fake, however what upper deck did was overprint, which wouldn’t be a crime if it was an accident. They printed more cards than Konami the rightful copyright holder allowed them to for their own gain, and that is breach of contract.
I wish you could make more of these type of videos(The Making of Yu-Gi-Oh/The Unknown Past of Yu-Gi-Oh) Thank YoU!
Super interesting video, one of your best! Worth the extra production time.
wow. this is crazy. congrats on your pulls. starting to get hard to get YuGiOh cards.
Very informative didn't know that at all
This video made me look into my old cards because the White-Horned Dragon was one of my favorite cards to use during the playground days. I remembered it being this rarity and it being a mcdonalds promo based on the code. Verifying the card it is rare as well, limited edition, it states it has a mcdonalds promo and it has the silver mark on the lower side which means it is very likely that it is the counterfeit but I want to confirm it because I remember opening McDonalds pack 2 and I still have many of the cards but I don’t remember opening this product. Also looking for the White Horned Dragon I found that I also own the counterfeit Dreadmaster which I did not know was fake until today (EOJ 1st edition silver mark) but I don’t own the Mist Body.
I don't think the McDonalds ones are counterfeit - only the ultra/ ultimate rares in this set - but not 100% sure
Could this be the reason behind Air Neos' lack of reprint and showing? Out of all the "theories" and "rumors", this makes a lot more sense since it's around the time period Air Neos got printed, then the lawsuits started appearing shortly after. Within that time, I don't think they could have reprinted it because of the lawsuits happening.
And Konami probably wanted to avoid any "possible" lawsuits by not having Air Neos in the artwork of Instant Contact. As a just in case measure.
Well, seeing that Aqua Neos was one of the cards affected by this had me going to double check my copy, cause I know for a fact I would've just mistook it for a misprint. Thankfully my ultimate is a real card.
Good history lesson! Thanks for sharing!
This was a cool opening I enjoyed the little history you should more like this
So classic man love the anime cuts
Thank you for the brief history lesson!
I could tell just by the stamp on the aqua card. I haven't touched yugioh in aaaaaaaaaaages lol.
Awesome opening. Sucks that Upper Deck is no longer the card manufacturer. The quality was so good and they had that distinct smell
I knew about the counterfeits, but man I never knew about this product. I thought they came from rewaved booster boxes
It oddly feels more special pulling one of the counterfeit Flame Wingman's.
That thumbnail, I pulled an elemental flame wingman 1st edition ultimate rare from the only booster box I bought ATM. My rarest pull to this day.
I wonder if we'd still have ultimate and ghost rares in core sets if UDE still printed the cards. 🤔
Ultimate Rares and Ghosts left primarily because of rising costs of card production, and UDE would eventually have to cut costs like every other companies. UDE was notoriously violent against the casual player, moreso than modern Konami. I think we're in the better timeline.
@@Teebs1996 Yeah for sure I'm glad we don't have the hobby/retail exclusive junk anymore.
What a wild opening. Didnt get anything too crazy but still.
