    Learn how to use an external microphone on your iPhone with a simple adapter cable which will allow you to hook any 1/8-inch or 3.5mm jack microphone into your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or even your MacBook. This cable is required because the iPhone and other Apple products are built using a TRRS type port which combines headset and microphone connects into one plug. You can’t simply plug a 3.5mm microphone straight into an iPhone or iPod and expect it work.
    The video also warns against buying and using a certain lapel mic that doesn't work with Apple devices. At the end, there is a driving test with and without an external microphone attached to an iPhone 5S.

    This adapter also works if you have a newer iPhone or iPad that doesn't have a headphone jack, using the optional iPhone headphone adapter. Or to streamline the process, and bypass the adapter you can also use a rode smartLav+ and go direct in.

      I think in that case, the microphone is smartphone ready. There are mics on the market that are designed to be used with smartphones and tablets. However, if you have an old mic lying around that only has 3 sections on the 3.5mm plug, then you'll need the adapter shown in the video. Thanks for your question!

      Sorry you're having issues with the phone recognizing the external mic. Try this... unplug everything and shut off the recording app. Then connect the mic and optional headphone to the TRRS adapter. Last step is to plug the TRRS adapter into the iPhone and launch your recording app. Sometimes all the cables on the TRRS adapter need to be connected before plugging into the phone. I still occasionally run into an issue with the phone recognizing the external mic but I always eventually get it working. Hope this helps!

  • @dave20thmay
    @dave20thmay 5 років тому +1

    Would it work recording a conversation, while using the phone? That is using the ear/mic buds that came with the iPhone8. The only apps I can find that will record longer than 2mins have a cost with them.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  5 років тому

      You could use the earbuds that came with the iPhone 8 to record with it's inline mic. But if you're having a conversation then your voice will come out more clearly because it's closer to your mouth. You should be able to record longer than 2 minutes with a recording app. There are lots of free apps you can download that have extended recording times. However I've never really tried to record more than 2 minutes with these apps so maybe you are correct about the recording times. Hope this helps!

      There are mics that are made for mobile devices that are wired as TRRS with the 4 metal sections on the 3.5mm plug. Not sure why your TRRS mic doesn't work. Have you tried it on other devices? It should work on a MacBook, PC laptops with only one 3.5mm port and Android phones.

    Thanks for posting this video, TheRenderQ. Instead of a microphone, might I connect another audio source to the microphone receptacle on that Y-cable adaptor? I want to take audio from an Apple-Mac laptop's headphone socket, and send it directly into my iPad's microphone input. I need to do that, to stream that audio thru the iPad's bluetooth, which can pair up with my hearing aids' bluetooth receivers. My Signia hearing aids have bluetooth receivers that can pair up with my iPhone or iPad, when running Signia's "Live Listen" iOS app. The purpose of the "Live Listen" app is to use an iPad or iPhone as an additional wireless microphone. For example, to place next to someone making a presentation, in a noisy room.
    As far as I can determine, my hearing aids cannot directly pair with the bluetooth transmitters in any Apple-Mac laptop. The versions of bluetooth are incompatible.
    Right now, I make an acoustic connection. I plug ear-buds into the laptop, and place the buds next to the iPad's microphone, while the iPad is running Signia's "Live Listen" software. Of course, if I use that Y-cable adaptor, I cannot be sure if Signia's "Live Listen" software will recognize and work with the change in microphones. I have older iOS devices with earphone receptacles, an 2015 iPhone 6s Plus and a 2014 iPad-mini.

    Will this work on an iPad Pro if it has the little hole that’s used for headphones? It also has the lightning charger for charging and also where you can put the newer headphones. But I want to utilize the hole to do recording with my lapel mike and still keep the charging part open for charging my iPad. Do you think this will still work, the device you speak about in your video?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  4 роки тому

      Yes! The TRRS adapter will work on your iPad Pro if it has a 3.5mm headphone port. If it’s the newer iPad Pro with only a USB C port then you’ll have to add a USB C to 3.5mm adapter in addition to the TRRS adapter. I used to have a OnePlus 6 smartphone that only had USB C and I used both adapters to make an external mic work. Hope this helps!

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  6 років тому

      It sounds like your iPhone is still using using it's built-in mic instead of the external mic for some reason. Doesn't the BM-800 need phantom power? Are you supplying power to your mic? However, if you have the TRRS adapter plugged in, it should disable the built-in mic and not record any sound. You're sure that your adapter is a true TRRS adapter? At this point, that might be the issue but not completely sure.

    Does the splitter allow for two way... i.e. If my headphones are plugged into the out, it works in unison with the external mic or does the iPad/iPhone only do one activity at a time?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  3 роки тому

      When you’re recording with a headphone and mic connected to the TRRS adapter you will not be able to hear what you’re recording through the headphones. Typically you’ll have to stop recording and then playback your audio. Although I think a few years ago someone had a more professional paid video recording app on their iPad that if I remember correctly I was able to monitor audio during recording. So it is possible but the functionality has to be included in the app you’re using. However I can’t remember the name of that app.

    What if I want to use headphones at the same time?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  7 років тому +1

      You can have headphones and mic plugged into the TRRS and it will work like a headset. You can record with the mic and then listen to the audio or video you recorded afterwards. However, monitoring the audio while recording can be problematic. Not all apps support monitoring audio through the headphones during recording. There is one video recording app that I recently used that supported audio through headphones while recording but I can't remember the name of the app at the moment. It was on a friend's iPad. But it's nice to be able to monitor audio while recording because it gives me assurance that audio is coming through so I can fix audio issues before they become a bigger problem. Hope this helps!

      There are some apps in the App Store that I think that can do that for you. I did a search for "use iPhone as PA microphone" and got some names of apps that could work. What I'm looking for is an app that can take your voice and use Bluetooth to send the signal to a connected Bluetooth speaker. That way you can amplify your voice. I haven't found an app that can do that yet but your question makes me curious on how to do this too! Sorry I'm not that helpful at the moment but at least maybe I gave you a direction to follow.

    The Neewer mics are stereo and the mic input on the adapter is mono. Also, the Neewer mics require phantom power - they are condensor type w/ no internal battery. This might explain why most of them didn't work.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  7 років тому

      Just make sure that the adapter you're using is a TRRS adapter. Stereo Y-splitters look exactly the same and they won't work. I have seen instances where the iOS device won't recognize the mic in the adapter. In those instances, unplug the TRRS adapter from the device, plug in the mic to the input with the mic symbol. Then plug a set of headphones into the input with the headphone symbol. This creates a complete headset. Now plug the TRRS adapter into your device and launch the app. Also, try turning on and off the device and see if that causes the app to recognize the mic input. Hope one of these solutions helps!

    Can u do it without the adapter

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  7 років тому

      An external microphone will not work on an iPhone or iPad without the TRRS adapter. That's just the way these devices are wired. The 3.5mm port has internal contacts for headphone and mic but the TRRS adapter is the only way for the mic to be recognized on the Apple devices.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  6 років тому

      On iPhones it works but sometimes it doesn't and I can't exactly explain why. Sometimes a set of headphones needs to be plugged into the TRRS adapter too. When I find that this setup doesn't work on the iPhone, I'll usually unplug everything and shut down the app. Then I plug the mic and headphones into the TRRS adapter first. Then plug the TRRS adapter into the phone and launch the app. If this doesn't work sometimes I'll restart the phone. But eventually I get it working. Hope this helps!

      One thing to try is to plug in a set of headphones on the adapter port that has the headphone icon on it before plugging the TRRS adapter into your iPhone 6. Does that mic use batteries? I'm sure you have fresh batteries in it. Is there a gain setting? I have a problem like this on a set of Sony wireless mics and haven't been able to figure it out with that either. Hopefully you get the issue solved!

    • @TheRenderQ

      It does make a difference. The adapter has to be a TRRS adapter or it won't have the right connections internally to connect to the mic contacts inside the phone. I think many people think the TRS adapter is the same but the internal wiring doesn't work for external mics. Hope this helps!

      It's possible that the recording app you are using is causing this problem. Another viewer found that out and they downloaded another recording app and it started working for them. Another possibility is that the app has a setting where you can select internal or external mic for recording. Also can you try this on another friend or family member's phone to see if it works? Last thing is to be sure your adapter is a true TRRS adapter. Stereo Y-splitters look exactly the same but are wired differently internally. Hope this gets you in the right direction!
