    In this video we look at iPhone and iPad external microphone adapters and some of the issues around using both powered and unpowered external lapel or lavaliere mics with Apple iPhones and iPads and the need for the correct adapter leads.
    If you looking to use an external microphone with your iPhone or iPad then you will also need an adapter but there is more to it than that.

    I never comment on youtube videos, but had to this time. This is a fabulous explanation - exactly what I was looking for. I have been ransacking youtube and talking to apple store staff,... nobody has been able to shed light on this like you. Thanks a Ton. Kevin - Orlando

    Glad I found this video. I have been looking for this information for a couple years now, I like to record video using my Ipad air and wanted to use a lapel mic but could never get the device to recognize the external mic even with adapters and lapel mics that I purchased that said they would work with it. No luck so far so will look into this more. I have been stuck using the internal mic all this time for my videos.

    thanks so much for this video. You exactly gave the information we were looking for. The internal mic did not stop recording. We go look for the right cable now.

    I want to start recording guitar reviews with my iPhone I was wondering if I got a adapter and then used headphone splitters for the mics and plug the guitar right into it along with the mic would that work or do I need a special adapter to plug it in I do know that it would be like pluging two mics in

    Easy on the Eyes, Easy on the Ears and Easy on the Brain.You my friend are what I call, "Student Friendly" I'm gearing up to start shooting 1 and 3 min public service announcements using my iPad Air. After going nuts wondering why my Rode Video mic would not work, I searched the web for help and eventually landed on your "External Microphone Adaptors" video. Wow...just what I needed to know. I'm a pretty smart guy, but electronic technology has a way of flying right over my head. YOU...have a talent to keep this information grounded. I'm going to watch all you stuff weather I need to or not.

    Question: I have a wireless lapel mic kit. It includes a transmitter that the mic plugs into, and a receiver that will plug into an iPad Air. The mic is passive but the transmitter and receiver, of course, are battery powered. Given this, should the mic adapter be a powered adapter? I've tried a variety of unpowered adapters that did not work. Also, can you recommend any powered adaptors if that's what I need? I'm here in the U.S. and something via Amazon would be pretty handy. Thanks! Great video, btw.

    Thanks so much for putting out this very descriptive video. I was racking my brain trying to figure out why my wireless lavaliere wouldn't work on my iPad Air. After researching adapters that would work I found this one on Amazon, and it worked. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S0EFLB6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00
    I found connectors that cost as much as $49 (US), but this one was less than $6.
    Thanks again for the explanation of the why, how and what to do to resolve this issue.

    Hey Video Alchemy for my iPhone 6, I purchased the Audio Technica PRO88W-R35 Wireless Lavalier System with ATR3350mW Omnidirectional Mic, 170 MHz and got the iPhone 1/8 inch microphone adapter - 3.5mm 4 conductor TRRS Male to 3.5mm Microphone Input Jack from www.kvconnection.com/product-p/km-iphone-mic.htm - The audio comes out pretty low, and there is a subtle hiss, which becomes quite loud if I try to boost the audio levels in imovie...

  • @johnsistrunk6622

    I'm using the ATR 3350 with the correct adapter. The mic is working, but at a much lower sound level. I get the same results when I used the Apple earbud/mic combination (no adapter). Is there a way to boost the input level with the native camera app or must I go to something like MoviePro, which has audio controls?

    • @VideoalchemyPlus
      @VideoalchemyPlus  9 років тому +1

      John Sistrunk Without using some sort of external pre-amp or mixer then you'll have to use an app which has control over the input levels as you say. iRig recorder is also another app which is quite good and has the ability to boost the input signal but bare in mind that if the input is low then boosting the signal with an app will also boost any noise or hiss which might be there too.

    Video Alchemy hi i really need your help as i think you are the best person to ask this.
    I have just ordered an ipad air 2, and with it a Tascam Im2 stereo condenser mic.
    I dont know if the two are compatible or not, and if they r not, i would have to return the mic. So, before using it i just want to know if they are compatible, and if they are not, what is the solution to make them work together

    • @VideoalchemyPlus
      @VideoalchemyPlus  9 років тому

      Abhik Shome No, it wont work with the iPad Air 2, the connector is the large type which is for the older iPads and will not fit the lighting port on the Air 2. The iM2 is now a discontinued model.

    • @AbhikShome
      @AbhikShome 9 років тому

      Video Alchemy what if i buy a lightning to 30 pin connector, will it work then?

    • @VideoalchemyPlus
      @VideoalchemyPlus  9 років тому

      Abhik Shome Yes, that should work thought the Mic is designed to fit on the iPad and the 30pin to lightning connector will probably be a cable so you'll have to carry or fix the mic to the iPad in a different way.

    Does the taskar microphone work with the iPhone ?

    • @VideoalchemyPlus
      @VideoalchemyPlus  8 років тому

      +Sarah's Life It's a battery powered microphone with what looks like a standard 3.5mm connector so with the right adapter cable it should work with the iPhone. You will need an adapter cable that works with powered microphones, if you look on the blog post for this video I show where to get them from.

      Ben Peters I spoke with the guys at kvconnection.com who make a range of iPad to Mic adapter leads for both mic's with and without batteries and they said that all their new cables will work with all the iPad range from the original to the iPad Air 2. they ship world wide so I would have a word with them.

    So wear do you plug in the 1/8' jack when working with an iPad? headphone jack dosen't allow audio input.

    • @VideoalchemyPlus
      @VideoalchemyPlus  9 років тому +2

      Darrell Witt The head phone jack on the iPad is a combined mic socket and audio out, it has an extra ring on the plug & socket which is the mic input. This is why you need a special adapter that split these which gives you the normal type of connection for mic and headphone.

    Hello, I was wondering if you could help me out. I am a teacher and I wanted to record my students while using a green screen. I bought a movie mount kit and an external mic for the videos. The only problem is the mic doesn't seem to "connect" with the IPad Air. I was hoping it would work with an adaptor but I'm not sure which one to get. Could you please guide me to the right adaptor or let me know if I will need to purchase a different mic. Here is the link to the mic I currently have: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015IWWIH2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s02
    Thank you for your help

      +Andrew Bell The mic your using is a powered one so you would need an adapter for one of those. The iPad air works in the same way as the other iPads and iPhones when it comes to mic's . In the post for that article here video-alchemy.com/240/audio/iphone-ipad-external-microphone-adapters/ there are links to mics which would do the job for you.
