I appreciate this demonstration and will buy the tools to do it, BUT I wish you had shown us a before and after demonstration video on the same composition of the old and new focus.
Thank you so very much for this video. I’ve had this lens since 2005, I got it in a package deal when I bought a 44-2 and a SMC Takumar 28/3,5. I actually love the MiR despite the poor reviews in those days.... My copy is used but glass is good, needed to oil the focus ring but that was it. The biggest problem was the close distance focus. Thanks for your guide, now I can solve that!
i really love this channel specially for how calm and clear you presenting all the things. i hope you will bring lot of legacy lenses review, tips and tricks kind of thing for the next episodes. subscribe +1
Just did the mod and was a bit disappointed. I haven’t measured anything but it seems only a little better. Looking at the focus distance markers on the lens the modded ring only seems to move past 0,7 a little more than the distance between 0,7 and 0,8. Which means you’d only gain roughly 0,1 meters. ~0,6m focus distance sounds about right after I modded mine, no where near halving the 0,7m to a 0,35m focus distance.
I have the opposite problem can’t focus to infinity on my m42 Mir 1 lens. Will try your fix and see if I can make it work though or might see if I can fix it with an m39 to m42 adapter on my m39 adapter
After a bit of research I’ve come to the conclusion that the person who put my lens together made a mistake. Because my lens was adapted to use a cine focus gear I’m guessing that when they removed the original focus wheel they may have screwed it back the wrong way. Is this possible to have the reverse effect where infinity focus doesn’t even reach infinity? Or do I have an earlier black version that needs a different adapter?
Sehr cool.
Mine was super tight. I got the ring off with vice grips. I put some electrical tape on the locking ring to protect it from scratches and it came out clean but be prepared to mar the ring if you use that tool. Scratches on the ring wouldn’t affect the performance so I wasn’t too worried either way.
I did everything as you showed. Why is the minimal focus 120 cm on my Sony A 7? Я всё сделал как он показал. Почему на моей сони а 7 3 минимальный фокус стал 120 см?
Well, that's useful! Does it change how the lens operates in any other ways? 'Cause it seems a little odd to me that when engineering this lens they decided to limit the minimum focus at 70cm instead of, like, 50cm if it is that simple. Just wondering...
Except that you will have no markings for the focus below 0.7m, as it is not intended, in my case everything works perfectly great! It is also a complete mystery to me why this lens was constructed with this limitation.
These lenses were made for the Film Cameras they had to engineer it for that, considering all the moving parts and distance from the film to rear end of the lens to have proper focusing. With digital, especially with mirrorless, and with focus peeking everything changed :)
I don't know why but I am trying to get access to the focus screw, it's locked even if Im unscrewing it. If you can help me, it will be appreciate. Nice video btw;)
I did this during a CLA on mine and had the same results. While some claim to get the MFD down to 350mm, I'm not sure they're measuring from the actual focal plane. Mine came out to just shy of 580mm.
@@mku Actually not...It gives just some more cm of focus, but totally, its useless for 37mm...My 85mm or 135mm works nice cause they have 2-3m+ focus area.

Insane! I’ve had this lens for years and never knew about this. The minimum focus always bothered me. Thanks!!
Owned this lens for years and only just did this mod. So good thank you!
I like the way you are very specific about the screw driver sizes. That's a good German! Your channel is awesome, keep it up!
The build quality of that lens looks way stronger than the Flektogon equivalent!

Hallelujah!
Great tutorial. Why did they limit the focus distance so arbitrarily?
It likely loses quality as you focus closer. I don't know that for a fact, but what else could it be?
It was designed for rangefinder cameras which at least back then couldn’t focus any closer than 0.7m because of how the focusing system works on them
Starkes Ding!
Danke dir! Da kommt jetzt regelmäßig was! :)
nice channel.
continue in this way
Thank you very much, that motivates me a lot! I'm already working on the next video :)

Love this channel! My copy of the Mir has a very loose aperture ring. Any idea how to tighten it? Vielen danke!
Does the rear stick out enough for the DSLRs mirror to hit the lens or not?
Love it!
know this is an old vid. But why did they put that screw in that position? Does the rear element stick out too far now or something?
Thanks man :)

Danke, bro! Das hier ist erstmal für den Einstieg. Die "richtigen" Videos kommen noch! :)
Nice ! Your channel sounds very promising ! ;)
Question ! My mir1b has his focus ring wiggling a bit. Do you have any idea to fix that ? Cheers
Even after unscrewing those 2 tiny screws I have a problem with unscrewing the focusing part. I think it is because of the lens age or something else?
hey Till are you alive?

Hey i know this video is a little old but i am having trouble getting the rear ring off the back. I have the screws out and it wont budge. Any ideas?

Awesome video! I just bought a MIR-1 of the same vintage! Does the infinity focus still work correctly after removing this screw?
it should...

Ahhhh mine won’t unsrcrew!!! The little screws do but the larger piece is stuck.
I'm in the same boat as you. Did you get it figured out?
@@loganperkins9 dont be too harsh apply a bit of pressure and unscrew..
After that, which is the new focus distance?
Hi! i followed the tutorial ... my new close distance is 60cm, not 35cm. but thanks a lot dude!

Same, I didn’t measure and moving the ring past 0,7 clearly offsets the lens elements further but the difference in focus is marginal at best.
Did the same 1 year ago for my Canon.Willing to use it on a Nikon ff, im thinking to remove the indinity focus screw...
So, did it work for nikon?

@@georgethemmaker I suspected so. Thanks George.. that was helpful.
Why is that stupid screw there in the first place 🧐
