    Thank you, though I’d like to have seen them inside and and a lower F stop. To me the deciding factor is the Lens Flare. The 11-16 is much worse. Timely, I’m deciding today which way to go.

    Thanks for such a detailed review. I'm looking to do some Milky way photography with a Nikon D7500 but am confused whether to buy a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 or a Tokina 11-20 f2.8. I've read some pretty good reviews about the 11-16 but also that it gives a hard time to focus at infinity, which I believe is essential to photograph the milky way. Kindly advise which lens should I go with?

    Why don't you try to do the same exact photos with same settings, same subject, same focal lenght, aperture etc but different tokina (in this case 11-20mm and 11-16mm) to see which one is really better? Like a landscape, potrait, street

    You have a bad copy of the 11-16 then, unless everything you use is shot at f/2.8. There is no doubt about that. I had three copies of the Tokina 11-16 ... and two of the three outshot the two of the 11-20 ... hands down. I guess people just don't test sharpness at like f/11 that often. Ah well ... waste of money since you buy this lens for wide angle and not 20mm. @82mm thread for a filter .. it's like 2x the cost of a 77mm filter these days on the top end of the spectrum. So to me ... the fact its let's say for argument sake "just AS sharp as the 11-16" .. the 20mm reach is a non-starter and the 82mm filter doesn't me want to spend more money on a filter set I already have. I guess if you have money to burn .. but that's my own opinion.

    Sorry! you cant make a comperisson if you just use two different lenses and shot on basically the highes F Stop they offer!!!
    in case of sharpness every lens reacts differently on different Fstops, maybe the 11-16 is less sharper at f22, so can be the 11-20 less sharper at F8 than the 11-16!
    your test is basically REALLY useless! make the same Test on different Fstops and than you can tell wich lens is sharper at these f stops!
    And its better to make photos than videos, so you can really see the differences

    You are literally shooting with the default picture profile, which has digital sharpening, lool.

      lool

    • @VideoGizmology

      I don't remember which picture profile I was using, but I never use the default one. I usually shoot on Neutral with the sharpening and contrast dialed all the way down. OR, I use Lightform N or Lightform C, which are third party cinema Picture Styles made by a company called Cine Plus.

    70d is already soft in video. Sharp lens won't make a difference there. U should know this having c100 side by side.

    Is 11-20 suport the full frame cameras?

    • @zielscheibchen7773
      @zielscheibchen7773 3 місяці тому

      both 11-16 and 11-20 support EF and therefore 35x24mm² ... but they will show circular black edges when using the range of 11-15mm - vignetting. it is almost like a fisheye-lens with 8-15mm. On the smaller APS-C sensor you may be able to use the total range from 11-16mm. Because of the smaller sensor the circular "shadow" wont "touch" the smaller sensor as early as on full frame.
      I use both (Tkina 11-16 and Canon 8-15) on all my 6D and 1DX to create pictures that look like a planet in space. With my 8-15 @8mm i can shoot like a surround view of the horizon by pointing straight into the sky.

    I just booked a 11-16. More than f22 it would be interesting to see the sharpness comparison at f8/ f9/ f11 for which most people buy these two lenses to shoot indoors at weddings, real estate, etc. You could have tested it indoors at mid range f-stop instead of f22. You could have used a filter for better sharpness at f8 to f11. I hope I am right because that's what I have learnt from my experience.

    • @VideoGizmology
      @VideoGizmology  4 роки тому

      That's a great way to test these lenses. Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I made this video four years ago and don't even own these lenses anymore, but I appreciate the comment. Cheers.

      Anything larger than f11 looks like garbage on any lens. It’s called diffraction. Use nds rather than stoping down past f11.

  • @morrisgetman9827
    @morrisgetman9827 4 роки тому +1

    There is no point in shooting at f/22 to assess sharpness, as you are introducing strong diffraction from the small aperture.
    Thanks for the vid though.

  • @kimberlynorton

    Outside of the focal length, is the main difference between these two lenses the focal length of 11-16 vs 11-20? I am not talking about your perception of what you see, but the actual lens differences.

    • @VideoGizmology
      @VideoGizmology  7 років тому +8

      Yes, the main difference is the longer length, 16mm vs 20mm. The second difference is sharpness and autofocus. I think the 11-20 is sharper and has faster autofocus.

    Thanks for your video! How is the continuous AF in video? Is one better than the other? Does one have a less noisy AF motor sound than the other though can that noise be avoided with a shotgun mic on the camera? Thank you

    • @VideoGizmology
      @VideoGizmology  6 років тому +1

      Continuous AF works, but it's not nearly as good or silent as a Canon STM lens. The AF noise will be reduced by using a shotgun mic, but you'll still hear it. If you want a good AF and no noise in a wide angle lens, consider the Canon 10-18mm.

    • @justinspirational
      @justinspirational 6 років тому

      Video Gizmology thank you.. Is there another stm lens or similar with the better af in a similar focal range with constant aperture at f2.8 as the canon one is too slow for my needs..? (I see there's the sigma at f3.5 but probably had similar af to the tokina..

    • @VideoGizmology
      @VideoGizmology  6 років тому +2

      You'll have to get the expensive Canon 16-35mm if you want 2.8 wide angle.

    • @VideoGizmology
      @VideoGizmology  4 роки тому +1

      I would go with a Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 G2 or Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 or Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8. These Tokina lenses have inferior optical quality in 2020.

    Cool vid, thank you. Will it work on a full frame like the Nikon D750.??

    • @VideoGizmology
      @VideoGizmology  5 років тому

      I'm not sure about Nikon. I am a Canon shooter. The Tokina fits on a full frame Canon, but it's not usable on it's wide length. You have to zoom in towards the telephoto side. I only use this lens for video on Canon full frame because of it's crop in 4K.

    It is true that the 11-16 is a pig for flairs compared to the 11-20 which performs quite well, considering no filters were used. But is the 11-20 as good as 11-16 when it comes to low light performance and astrophotography??

    • @VideoGizmology
      @VideoGizmology  7 років тому +2

      Not sure about astrophotography, but the 11-20mm is sharper in low light.

    Good video. I love this lens. Good for the price. The part of the video where you pointed the camera into or close to the sun decreased the contrast and were not good for the comparison. Otherwise good video.
