This arc was actually really good in terms of developing Shinpachi now that I think about it, he always uses a wood sword after this arc in their fights

Actually, Gintoki himself said more than once that Katsura it's better than him if they get serious, and if you think about the few battles Katsura has in the anime, it's not very obvious but you can see that's true. Anyway, the point in Gintama it's not about raw power, but skill, endurance, guts and trolling/distracting/surprising power (which Gintoki has almost unlimited). That's why Hatori Zenzou, for example, is such a badass, because he keeps taking the enemy by surprise, while not having such raw power as a Yato.

"he is the main character" lul...

Asura R-R that's why I love Gintama, sure it has some exaggeration during battles, but it's very realistic, no special techniques by Gintoki at least, and with all the comedy in it being also very exaggerated but it makes the charm of this anime, overall the anime is actually really human maybe even too human at times, can't wait for it's return.
There are great long running shounen out there but in my opinion, Gintama is simply the best. Not me being bias because of how much Gintama means to me but it's simply an amazing series. The story, setting and characters are all unique and almost everything is better in Gintama then in other series. The characters are most likable characters in any fiction I know of, the comedy has made me laugh more than anything in my life and its serious and emotional moments are spot on. wath rurouni kenshin, yu yu hakushu, beelzebub hunterxhunter, and read rave master the manga from Rave master is better so if you like gintama you will like them. but I aggree i like gintama. bleach was good until the soul society arc after this arc it was Kinda meh the story telling was realy bad .
Stampoulis Rafail Hunter x Hunter is simply amazing (2011 version is anyway). Beelzebub is alright but I wouldn't consider it long running (for me, long running is 100+ episodes).

Gintoki knowing shinpachi was I trouble and had know qualms being the bad the guy if it meant Saving his family and the ones they care about it. It's what makes the anime special, gi toki with a sword, would own Obi-Wan Hajime.
To be honest this was peak gintama in terms of anime later on the quality dropped because of the animation and I felt we got two more arcs than what was needed because of that Gintama dropped from top 3 anime of all time for me
In terms of arcs i think that what we got after this was perfect. From shogun assassination arc to the end we revealed many things, such as gintoki's past, kagura's past, the farewell shinsengumi arc, kamui and takasugi, the sensei arc and we received an 110% of performance from the serious arcs showed. I personally think that the sudden change of dynamics has been a great move. Seeing characters that make us laugh, finding themselfs suddenly crying... chills
+Hakim St Jean Blot hajime robot parts took over wen he got 2 red eyes he wasnt him self anymore and wen that happent gintoki was try to get him back to his sence and wen shinpachi intefear he got his sence back and got beaten but dont forget hajime already was dead in the beginnen he died once you must watch the arc :D
So.....do his eye colours indicate which persona is in control on each scene? I'm just confused because he seemed to be talking nicely/sadly to Shinpachi when he had both eyes red, which is apparently the sign that the dark persona is in control....I don't get it.

So maybe he was more along the lines of acting, or he was fighting being controlled, and was his 'last words' so to speak. Hard to really tell.

tadaskay If you watch closely that scene in bath you can see Obi's eyes changed color to red, Gintoki felt exactly that Obi lost control of himself and that was the reason he attack.
