Your wife is absolutely right. Fix what needs to be done to make it mechanically and structurally sound but as far as aesthetics go keep it just how it is. There's just something about that faded color with just the right amount of rustiness that's absolutely beautiful. If I had to describe it in one word I'd say it looks American.

Definitely check your radiator for leaks. Flush cooling system with water until it flows clear. Replace thermostat, radiator hoses, heater hoses maybe heater core, flush brake fluid, change trans fluid ,Differential gear oil change, rebuild carburetor, check vacuum hoses or just replace, fix turn signals, fix horn, just paint the wheels , replace with some new all terrain tires, check brake pads , brake shoes, wheel cylinders , calipers, drums, remove seat and give it a good cleaning underneath it and detail all interior. Set your point to specification, check how much vacuum your engine is producing at idle. Give it a good pressure hose wash to engine bay. Good luck. 👍🍀
I can keep on writing more stuff to do list but that should keep you busy. Lol

Laura has commented in several videos about how she really liked the Rat Rods!
I would suggest that you remove the bed and cab from the chassis and do a complete rebuild of the steering, brakes, suspension and a much larger fuel delivery system. Get the tank/fire bomb out of the cab❗
It's a Chevy, use a LS motor. There are a lot of totaled Vettes around so brakes and suspension could be available from the same source.
If the bed is in good shape, used motor oil will preserve it nicely. Get a sprey-can sealer that will stop the growth of any rusted through spots and clear-coat the whole thing.
Dyna-mat the cab. There are several kits available to convert the window crank to operate electric windows.
Personally, I'm not a fan of Rat Rods, but always remember that "a happy wife means a happy life"❗

As others have said, rebuild the carburetor or a replacement might not be that expensive since it appears to be a single barrel. As a quick fix, replace the gasket under the carburetor since it sounds like it is sucking air. Change all belts too before you hit the road to avoid a breakdown.
When I was a teenager I worked at a gas station and drove tons of these old trucks and loved the 50's Fords.
I learned to drive stick with a three on a tree. Some of the foreign cars like the Peugeot's even had four on the tree.
Retired senior here but if I lived close by, would work on that for you and have that engine running great. The old cars were so neat and very easy to work on. The times were much simpler and less complex back then.
Just take your time and once you get everything tweaked out, you will love it.
If it were my truck and had tons of cash, I would have it done as a Pro street restomod. Vvrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooom, woooooo-hooooooo!!!

I've always added 10 gallons to the tank and went from there, most of the time, with a couple of fuel filter. Startup with crankcase oil and change three times in 500m, with filter and wala you got a clean motor. Good motor, once get it to run, pull the top rad hose, run hose water thru rad cap to flush and repeat. Replace thermo add 1 pint sodium silicate (ebay) add 50/50 water antifr.. silicate is a sealer. Replace the point power feed from the coil. That's a brass & copper radiator don't just throw it away for aluminum leave original wheels on it. Last but not least, stay on budget!

You can tell he has never worked on an old car in his life. You never put a new air filter in until you get it running. His uncle was right. Don't change the oil until you get it running at least once. Next don't worry about the gas tank. Just unhook it and run a new hose to the pump and a portable tank. If the pump won't pump, just hook it direct to the carb and let it gravity feed. Or just unhook it and pour a little gas in the carb and see if it fires. Ok, I am not an American but is every farm-town American guy so rich as to pick a beat, disused car like this and pump in 30-40,000 dollars into it? I'm sure it won't take anything less than that to get this to the custom beauties level. I think Americans and , to a lesser extent Australians, are the only ones who spend big money and time restoring old beauties. Really appreciable. Hats off to you guys! I Never see such things in where I am from.

I hate to burst your bubble but your wife is absolutely right. Stock is coming back as the new good look and they only look old once! It would be good if the two of you did this together!! Your little boy is already ahead of things and pointing out things he recognizes...WOW WOW WOW, he is so smart that in just a few years he will be building things with you and those are the most important years as the kids come first. The truck does have some issues but getting in a hurry only makes it worse. People will help if your not packing it out the door and dumping it for some fresh stuff. I have a feeling that you both work and so if the money, even if your the only breadwinner in the house is half hers so get together and I will follow. My first in finding you and after watching you and the kids and your beautiful bride check out things it is apparent that this is a good thing for the family to do together

You need to get some black smoothies with chrome baby moon centercaps, with chrome trim rings, or beauty rings as some people call them and some Cooper raised white letter tires. Those would look sweet on there and they will still have a vintage look. I’m actually planning to put the same setup on my 1970 Ford Torino GT Fastback.

  • @Just_Mark

First: fix that window! Then rebuild the carb, tidy-up the wiring, and try to find the parts you’re missing (might mean hitting the Chevy event in Carlisle next year). See if you can find original rims with hub caps. You’ve got an old truck that’s still stock. Don’t be in a hurry to mod it. Get it running really good the way it is. You only get one chance at a stock truck. Take your time to work the bugs out and figure out what shape it REALLY is in.

Carb kit, turn signal flasher under dash, stat & gasket, make sure belt is not too loose. Impeller on the water pump might be loose or spinning on the shaft. I wonder on the window if part of the mechanism is rotted away or it just needed adjusting and lube all points? Repack wheel bearings, grease u-joints or replace, brake job. Check ball joints, tie rod ends etc. just the common sense stuff. Oh and new lube in the tranny. By the way you two are just the best mom & dad!

Definitely rebuild the carb, I'm surprised it ran as well as it did after sitting so long. I would also run new brake lines, completely replace everything in the brake system, new radiator, hoses then go through suspension before you drive it. Brake lines corrode and can break I had it happen on a truck that was newer than yours. It should be a nice driver and you shouldn't need to spend too much money if you keep it stock. Check out LMC truck and brother's trucks, they have everything you will need to rebuild that truck. Good luck and have fun.

I had that truck I had so much fun restoring it You might need a secondary ground You need to run a wire from the negative to the body this will help a lot of things work better. Think about getting a hersh shifter for your three-speed .that will make it easier to drive. Don't change the shifter if you are trying to keep it original Change the oil in the rear end and definitely get new brakes. Buy a rebuilt carburetor or rebuild your old one This is a great truck to restore they made a lot of these trucks

Try to move the plastic fuel filter away from the motor so it doesn't get damaged and start a fire, also just get a metal fuel filter to be on the safe side. :-)

In the old days we would just stick a hose in the gas tank and suck on the hose to start draining the gas. No sissy pump was used. We may have swallowed a little bit of gas but we survived.

Lmc has parts most likely.straight sixes are tanks as long as you take care of them. Fix the issues with it but this is a good runner. Don't go overboard with changing everything if it's not broken don't fix. Rims looked good to me.

Carb rebuild needed. Grab a rebuild kit. 1 bbl carb is pretty straight forward to rebuild. Probably a good amount of residue from old gas in the primary circuit. By the way, make sure to set dwell angle on points. Pretty important for it to run right.

It may be that you have a 292 cid engine, which is a score! My brothers had one that was balanced and blueprinted that was a real powerhouse! They got it because they worked at ABC MACHINE SHOP where it was built and the customer never picked it up. In a '49 Chevy Coupe, you could pull a 2nd. gear wheelie about 1 foot off the ground.....left side only....because of the torque. It ran for years and years......always abused, never failed. It was a popular motor for a hot rod, nicknamed "BLUE FLAME" They was running a 4/11 positraction rear end with a "3 on the tree" which eventually got swapped out for a Hurst floor shifter. I gotta tell you; that old '49 would get up and scoot! What little research I did, I discovered that 1963 was the last year that the Chevrolet P.U. came with the 292. Check the engine numbers and see if it is the 292. If so; may I suggest you pull it, send it to a reputable machine shop, have them go through it, replace the Pistons with the highest compression ratio for today's gasoline, balance and blueprint it, port the heads, get ahold of a 4 barrel intake manifold.........AND HANG ON!!!

Chevrolet Rallye Wheels from 70's-80's It sounds like you have a vacuum leak, use carb cleaner and spray around the base of the carb. when it is running and see if the idle changes. Also, make sure the points are set correctly usually 16 thousands and the timing right at top dead center. They have gas tanks that fit all the way in the back between the frame rails and that is a lot safer.

My guess would be the carburetor base plate. Pull the carb, turn it upside down and tighten the two Philip head screws then bolt it back on. Now if it were me, I'd paint it flat black with steel wheels and baby moons. Keep the 6 cyl. You'll have a nice parts chaser for all the other projects you get..
