    As a Senior Citizen and former wrench puller, I’m really pleased to see good old vehicles like this old girl being brought back to life! We don’t need to keep discarding equip that is still usable! That’s one of the things that’s wrong with this country now- we’ve become a “throw-away” culture! Good job, young man!

      @boobrowsky 3 роки тому +18

      being a part of new generation from some different corner of globe i still find this old stuff awesome, you just can repair it with wrenches and some simple tricks, in worst case machinist shop, and look on all this new crap - if computer decides its end then you have no options other than long and painfull process of getting over computer that usually fails, and.. we know how looks electronics after 15-30 years sitting in bushes - no go... and here its other world, just some fresh consumables and its as good and as bad as new, just made to do the job

      "SCRAP OR TRASH THE OLD (even if it still runs like a champ like this

    LOL. The A-Car diesel was the first truck I ever drove! It was back in my Navy days in 1976 and it was probably a 1959 just like this one but only in drab olive green. It was cool right down to the 5 speed main and 4 speed brownie transmission. Oh what fun taching out at 1500 to 2000 "R's" and grabbing two sticks to tame the fearless beast (that's what she said! LOL).
    I always loved the looks of the A-Car and will always remember her for the awesome truck she was!
    Though I never drove trucks for a living after Navy life, I did get to experience other great trucks too, but the A-Car holds a place in my heart and always will!
    Thanks for taking me down memory lane!

    I don't think there are many more exciting moments than when Old Engines crack back into life and finally, you can start working through deciding if they are worth continuing on because I like to answer that question first before I sink a lot of time and money into projects.
    We all are at the mercy of previous owners and many sold these things on because they simply did not have the skills or want to work on them which is far enough, but sometimes we buy things on Trust and they were far further along in decay than we were told or they suffered Massive mechanical failure that you cannot see, But if we buy them at the right price for only what we can see then its all good if it works or Does not work out, But Man the Adventure is what it's all about isn't it?

    The Cummins 180 is indeed a claimed 180 horsepower unit, but they were often throttled back a bit by mechanics for longer endurance.. The same engine was used in British ERF trucks, among other things, and some were still in daily use in the 1980's. The vehicles were not particularly fast, topping out in the mid-40’s mph. But the engines were reliable enough, though not as reliable as Gardner 180 or Rolls Royce engines of similar power.

      Diesel Creek that’s what we’ve been debating on it, right now financially it’s a little tight on our side projects so unfortunately it’s sat for a while. If we put any money into it we’re going to completely redo it, she was the mascot of our farm for the longest time so it’s only fair to do it up right

    A farmer I worked for said they would put the primary transmission in gear while the truck was warming up, to spin the input shaft on the secondary transmission to get the gear lube warmed up. Otherwise it was almost impossible to shift the secondary transmission for the first few miles on a cold day. Not only did a lot of these old trucks not have spring applied park brakes on the rear axles (usually just a mechanical band brake on the drive shaft) but many of them didn’t have any front brakes at all. That same farmer had a 1966 GMC “Crackerbox” cabover I drove that had no front brakes, and no spring applied park brakes. Scary by modern standards!

    I watched the videos because I grew up in wynnewood, PA which is 2 miles from where the Autocar factory was in Ardmore. I now live still a few miles away. I know a colleague who is older than me who grew up in Ardmore a few blocks away from the factory and remembers as a child going over to the factory when the fire happened. I got a copy of a dvd documentary about the factory and the fire.
