Estinien was also a total a-hole in the ARR dragoon quests who willingly surrendered himself to nidhogg for power (vs just being corrupted like in HW), but look where he is now. They could have definitely made a good story around Widargelt learning to leave the nobility behind and embrace a new Ala Mhigo.
Him being Ala Mhigan royalty is a reveal, not something most people are even privy too including Widargelt himself. What is known is that he's a priest to the god most commonly worshipped in that region and that those priests were known for being able to hit things, really, really, really, really hard.
Lyce got fast-tracked to Ala Mhigan Headwoman based purely on her family name. Her Father and Sister were famous, plus she dragged the Scions into the whole affair, so she got drafted to be the figure head of the Resistance.
I mean, given how bad the previous nobility and royalty was before the Garleans, it makes sense that most Ala Mhigans would not trust someone with ties to that.
SO MUCH THIS!!!! It helps the world building so much when the role quests actually impact the story in any way at all. Feels so sad to see the potential of a perfect fit go unused when the replacement is... nonsensical at best.
Stormblood had two writing teams, one for ala mhigo and another one for Doma. The one for Doma was better and the one for ala mhigo... was not. The contrast created some perceptual friction when traveling between the lands back and forth while going through the story
Estinien wasn't so much the Dragoon job quest leader / NPC, as he was just involved in the quests plot because in ARR he steals the eye of Nidhogg, and then is labeled a traitor to Ishgard, and then he's obviously still the Azure Dragoon so he's gotta make an appearance. they do not make MSQ - relevant characters job quest NPCs, not one single MSQ relevant character is also a job quest NPC, they are gameplay device characters that require some plot, but that's the length of their use. there are times in MSQ where Scion characters get separated, but they need to have NPCs available at all times, and still maintain MSQ believability, this is probably a main reason why. at least this got rid of Lyse, she was sort of a dead end character, no lore to her except her sister died and she took her place ( i forget why, but i think it has to do with Lyse being sought out by the empire or something? )
Here's the problem with Widargelt: the man is literally stuck in the old ways. 🛡SPOILER SHIELD FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY MONK, ALONGSIDE SOME STORMBLOOD STUFF🛡 Think about it: the man helps to train you in the old ways of the Fist of Rhalgr all the way up to the point where you beat him at the level 50 quest, and he effectively continues to help guide you in those old ways all the way through to the start of Stormblood. It's there where we effectively find out that the old ways of the Monk have been studied for long enough that there is an effective counter therein. It's then when he realizes that _maaaaaaaaaaaybe_ the old ways won't work for this, and you literally drag in Hamon Holyfist and help put him into shape with Pugilist techniques to create the hybrid *you* have been using ever since you got the job stone. Also: the fact that he's literally Ala Mhigan royalty isn't even known to him...and is shown to be effectively a *BAD THING* for the populace, considering who his uncle is (there's a damn good reason he's called the "Mad King"...). At least with Lyse, she was able to bring in more fresh ideas to the table, seeing as - despite her effectively being her dead sister's proxy - she is still more world-wise than our straightforward Monk trainer. Now, does it not make any lick of sense in the grand scheme of things? Probably. Would it have been more cool to have him a bit more involved with Ala Mhigo's liberation? I'd certainly like it. But I'm not exactly going to complain about what we got, considering the ties he has to it and how _his_ story ends. ...speaking of that, if you haven't done your 80 capstone for Monk, go do it. I personally think it puts everything into a nice package for him.

I think one of the reasons why we only have role quests now is because of things like these. They were clearly spreading themselves thin with so many storylines seemingly unrelated to the main plot that missing opportunities like these was bound to happen.
They were setting Lyse up for the Stormblood storyline from the state. She was wearing a mask from ARR so that nobody would realize that she had taken Yda's place.
Yeah I totally thought Widargelt was gonna be part of SB. He even says at the end of ARR, "when the time cones, will you join me in taking back Ala Mhigo" or something along those lines. It was a very strange writing choice to not pay that off. Even if they still wanted Lyse to be the main character, he could've had a part to play.
When I got to Stormblood, I almost immediately got hit by a wave of "Wow, I really don't care about this" when I saw that Lyse was gonna be the star of the show. And then it only got compounded when I saw Zenos, to which it made me just really not care what was going on. I will say, I just really liked Yotsuyu. Where I am now, it feels so nice to just have someone be genuinely terrible. Like she's just actively awful, and I'm all for it. Not much deeper than "I hate these people, so I'm gonna make their lives awful because I'm petty"

I did the ARR Dragoon job quests after finishing Dawntrail and my opinion is they should never do that again. Imagine if someone does them while Estinien is... occupied by a certain problem after HW proper. Also, Lyse was there from the start, pretending to be Yda.
I Started to play recently and that reminded me of me of me cooling off after i had ended ARR and started Heavensward and i stopped do level some crafting jobs, more precisely culinarian... and there's a scene that really didn't make any sense considering where i was based on the MSQ...
Hey, try doing the Culinarian quests during the beginning of HW. You cook some food for a special guest and suddenly Nanamo shows up. Who is supposed to be assassnated at this point. Generally the consensus is that these quests are suspended in time and take place during the original expansions regardless of when you do them.

"Dropped the ball" is the valid and succinct summary of Stormblood's entire story. Just, every single character and major story beat felt like hitting speed bumps doing 80. They recovered it in the patches, and it went on into Shadowbringers which is just one of the best pieces of entertainment media ever made. But hell, IN SHADOWBRINGERS, they also point out Stormblood straight-up happens at the wrong time, and that it should have occurred before Heavensward. Little meta nod, there. And chances are a lot of really hurried-feeling writing decisions were, well, hurried and not much-planned. ...I only leveled Monk to 50 but Widargelt seemed really cool ;_; .
The different writing teams argument is why books will never be fully replaced by other media. Books are still primarily the work of the single author who controls the narrative while everything else is storytelling by committee. This is worse for mmos, as much as I love them, the goal of said committee is to drag out the story and milk it for as long as possible.
During Wyd's Stormblood story arc (mnk stormblood questline) you the WoL can ask him if he is interested in leadership of new ala mhigo; and he declines. whilst he is by this point sane (vs end arr wyd) he is the descendant of the MAD KING and he doesnt want to even risk the political problems that could bring about; nor does he himself place value in the concept of royalty/royal bloodline. HE choses to remain a mnk and focus on rebuilding the order, and now he can rebuild the order from its primary temple next to the reach instead of corners of uldah and revenants toll and as a leader of people he does not view himself to be any more competent than lyse, so no value in him putting his foot forward. also lets not forget oboro was done kinda dirty too those two and the rdm trainer shouldve appeared in msq during their relevant liberation sections WITH voiced lines
I mean, when it comes to Class Quest, all I need to say is Dark Knight (main Bias lol) Alamigan king aside, I feel like Rauban should have been main lead on that area since he was there from the start with a know connection to Alamigo vs Lyse who we found out about her connection during patch quest. Part of the reason why I absolutely hated the Stormblood Monk quests, dude was so useless and we somehow have to believe the bs about royalty because Eric said it seems plausable, cmon. Its on par with HW Paladin for me.

I know absolutely nothing about FFXIV whatsoever apart from the fact that there is someone called Thancred in it. @@mattmk_ii1063 The initial dragoon class quest involves past Estinien and is in its own pre-HW time bubble, whenever you do it. Some NPC dialogue will change depending on how far you are in HW or past HW but pre-HW Estinien remains. People just need to adjust and understand its past events.
See, I don't hate the idea of Widargelt being more involved, but I will note his story is so much more personal, his first arc is a self destructive revenge art, then he turns into a man dedicated to reviving his art more than revenge, and learns to take up a better path than needless violence and continuing the cycle of violence from the past. Then in Stormblood he takes another step on that personal journey. Narratively, even if he knew his heritage by the start of stormblood, he is of the last dynasty with the mad king, and not only would it kind of mess with his own personal arc, the people of Ala Mhigo definitely wouldn't want that heir to mad king Theodric on the throne. They even state at the end of msq that they've had enough of kings and are looking for a new path forward as a new Ala Mhigo. Just saying I think it makes sense things shake up how they do.

like what the above person said Estinien shows up in the MSQ ONLY when HW starts. he is a side character only before then. theres even unique dialogue if you've done the DRG quests before meeting him or not you could very easily do that with any other side character. and guess what, they did it again with G'raha.
You answered the question yourself, HE can't be the main character, they had to make HER the main character. Expecting anything else is just naive at this point, or you haven't been paying attention to the trends of what the "modern audience" wants.

Man I miss job quests I understand that making now almost 70 extra quests per expansion (5 per job) is a massive undertaking that would likely drag other parts of development down, but role quests just don't feel as fun or like they matter as much.

And if they still wanted to write out Lyse, there was no reason not to as she could still provide support in other ways. Although maybe they chickened out because that requires actually showing Minfilia as a leader and not relying on the 'read between the lines' nonsense they were doing.

Yes Minfilla has a strong echo connection but she had also had the backstory that fit before more of Lyse's past was revealed. So retroactively setting up that Lyse had gotten the echo and was chosen instead I would argue would fit better. Plus, it resolve core issues with Minfilla's character...even if the writers for that part of the Storm Blood were more than a bit lacking.

@@jedimasterpickle3 I concede that my initial premise was flawed. If the writers insist that the choice of who would lead Ala Mhigo had to be an unideal choice I rather M'naago be chosen. And rather have Lyse not be considered the better option, could have made it that her pledging her support for the cause was enough. That her participating in the battles lead her to be seen as symbol for the resistance and not a fully blown figure head. Otherwise, Raubahn is the ideal choice. As far as Minfilla is concerned, I rather she could have been developed in other ways. It felt like the fact she had such a strong connection to the echo that meant she would not be cooped up in one room all the time. That she be the Scion who you never know where she might be standing or sitting down at. (Including not her office most of the time). Or alternatively her connection overwhelmed her and thus gave us as players reasons why she would struggle to fight or even move. Or that she had secret compartments and tunnels and traps and so on prepared, that it was the safest place for the Scion's leader to be. Perhaps there could have been foreshadowing to this very fact. At the very least, it felt like there were other possibilities of could have been rather than what is.

This issue relates to a lot of content. For example, doing Coils already after Alphi and Alisae have changed their outfits (and VAs in some cases).

Part of the reason why I absolutely hated the Stormblood Monk quests, dude was so useless and we somehow have to believe the bs about royalty because Eric said it seems plausable, cmon. Its on par with HW Paladin for me.

I would like to confess that while this was truly funny, it made almost no sense to me. I know absolutely nothing about FFXIV whatsoever apart from the fact that there is someone called Thancred in it. I just enjoy listening to DM talk in the background while I’m doing other things when she streams FFXIV. I’m typing this while another listening to another vtuber play Overwatch 2 in the background. I hate Overwatch 2. You couldn’t pay me enough to play it. I know nothing about its lore. It’s only on because I enjoy listening to that vtuber too.
In short, I think I have a vtuber problem😅.

@@mattmk_ii1063 The initial dragoon class quest involves past Estinien and is in its own pre-HW time bubble, whenever you do it. Some NPC dialogue will change depending on how far you are in HW or past HW but pre-HW Estinien remains. People just need to adjust and understand its past events.

See, I don't hate the idea of Widargelt being more involved, but I will note his story is so much more personal, his first arc is a self destructive revenge art, then he turns into a man dedicated to reviving his art more than revenge, and learns to take up a better path than needless violence and continuing the cycle of violence from the past.
Then in Stormblood he takes another step on that personal journey. Narratively, even if he knew his heritage by the start of stormblood, he is of the last dynasty with the mad king, and not only would it kind of mess with his own personal arc, the people of Ala Mhigo definitely wouldn't want that heir to mad king Theodric on the throne. They even state at the end of msq that they've had enough of kings and are looking for a new path forward as a new Ala Mhigo.
Just saying I think it makes sense things shake up how they do.

Estinien shows up in the MSQ ONLY when HW starts. he is a side character only before then. theres even unique dialogue if you've done the DRG quests before meeting him or not
you could very easily do that with any other side character. and guess what, they did it again with G'raha.
You answered the question yourself, HE can't be the main character, they had to make HER the main character. Expecting anything else is just naive at this point, or you haven't been paying attention to the trends of what the "modern audience" wants.

I miss job quests
I understand that making now almost 70 extra quests per expansion (5 per job) is a massive undertaking that would likely drag other parts of development down, but role quests just don't feel as fun or like they matter as much.
@perfectsuperchaos7 looking at the quality of 140 quests in DT I am pretty sure 70 more would take them another 5 days of dev time with how lazy they have gotten
I wish we'd at least get one quest each like they did in ShB, even just to check in on the job mentors or whatever

You want to know another character who it would make total sense for them to have been the main character of Storm Blood, especially if it had a be Scion member with a relevant backstory? Minfilla. And if they still wanted to write out Lyse, there was no reason not to as she could still provide support in other ways. Although maybe they chickened out because that requires actually showing Minfilia as a leader and not relying on the 'read between the lines' nonsense they were doing.

@@StarshadowMelody Correct. Between these two if someone had to go to The First. I rather they picked Lyse. Yes Minfilla has a strong echo connection but she had also had the backstory that fit before more of Lyse's past was revealed. So retroactively setting up that Lyse had gotten the echo and was chosen instead I would argue would fit better. Plus, it resolve core issues with Minfilla's character...even if the writers for that part of the Storm Blood were more than a bit lacking.

@@WebSurfer009 No, that doesn't make sense on either count. Lyse has no connection to Hydaelyn and would not make sense as the Word of the Mother, and conversely, Minfilia has no connection to Ala Mhigo.
@@jedimasterpickle3 I concede that my initial premise was flawed. If the writers insist that the choice of who would lead Ala Mhigo had to be an unideal choice I rather M'naago be chosen. And rather have Lyse not be considered the better option, could have made it that her pledging her support for the cause was enough. That her participating in the battles lead her to be seen as symbol for the resistance and not a fully blown figure head. Otherwise, Raubahn is the ideal choice.
As far as Minfilla is concerned, I rather she could have been developed in other ways. It felt like the fact she had such a strong connection to the echo that meant she would not be cooped up in one room all the time. That she be the Scion who you never know where she might be standing or sitting down at. (Including not her office most of the time). Or alternatively her connection overwhelmed her and thus gave us as players reasons why she would struggle to fight or even move. Or that she had secret compartments and tunnels and traps and so on prepared, that it was the safest place for the Scion's leader to be. Perhaps there could have been foreshadowing to this very fact. At the very least, it felt like there were other possibilities of could have been rather than what is.
