I think something neat about P06 is that the stage layouts are virtually unchanged. 06 already had good level design, the problem is that the game just refused to do anything else right.

I remember playing the original Sonic 06 demo in an EB Games as a kid and thinking about how *amazing* it was. Years went by thinking that I played a masterpiece of a Sonic game and being jealous I never had an Xbox to play it. When I finally had the money in high school for a console and went looking for games to start playing, I learned the truth.
My friend, the Xbox Demo of 06 was actually fire. It was more refined, had more animations, and ran smoother, than the final game. It's the Kingdom Valley demo, right? You can tell by the animations of Sonic's little jump that were added to the demo that weren't in the final build. So don't feel bad. You played a demo for a game that didn't exist until ChaoX literally put all of those bells and whistles back into 06!
I say this every time. Sonic 06 _is_ Sonic Adventure 3. Don't believe me? There's Chao in Space in Sa1. There's Chao in Space II in Sa2. There's a Chao in Space III billboard in Crisis City. Checkmate, liberals.
Honestly, the story of 06 was always pretty solid (minus one romance we all wish never happened) it was always the gameplay and the game itself which was the problem. Project 06 is such an amazing idea and honestly, if done right, it could show everyone what a good version of 06 would be like, and that's super exciting.
Earlier this year I heard that Chaos X will likely have the final release of it be released either sometime late this year or early next year. The last story and the boss battles will be the only parts that will get included. Though the person who revealed that info also mentioned that after this next release, some other people might get interested in making mods of the story mode and the hub-worlds so that the production of this fanmade remake can finally be fully completed. So we'll just have to wait and see if that will happen and when, (if other people do start making mods of those parts). I've been trying to get a gaming PC for myself this year and from what I've seen and heard about it I'm already 100% convinced to definitely try to download and play this version of Sonic 06 on that digital system when I'm set up for that. What a fanmade masterpiece he's turned it into with all those quaility of life improvements!
Please also check out "Legacy of Solaris" for the original Sonic 06 which fixes many of the problems in the game including adding a lot of things, a great mod too made by an amazing team.
My hottest take is that I don't find the original that bad, in like an unironic, it's actually one of my favourite games way. It's an objectively bad game, but I found the fact it's unfinished is where the challenge was. Fixing the game engine would have made it less fun, in my opinion. Like I knew what I was getting myself into when I bought Sonic '06 and I still unironically fucking love it!
the joys of childhood and ''funny game move fast'' despite all it's flaws i did enjoy it at the time, (inclduding the bit in the silver fights where he throws you directly UP, ensuring a double tap and inevitable death) the ending boss fight was pretty good, 3 super-form hedgehogs was mind-blowing back then for me also coming off of sonic rush on the DS, which introduced me to Blaze), sonic heroes (which introduced me to Omega) and Sonic Adventure 2:Battle (which introduced shadow and Rouge), Sega had some brass ones on em for teasing to kill sonic in SA2, and then actually doing it in '06 13 year old me was aghast....maybe because i grew up playing and watching sonic media a LOT (8 year old me thought he was badass)
Don't know if you know this but Shadow & Silver have their own Super Form equivalent upgrades (by S-ranking their stages), and Silver has some upgrades that give him new moves.

yep i remember one side mission for sonic where you had to determine which box was the one you had to break to make your pile match the one next to it, and the camera did not turn to aid you every box break re-loaded the area, and if you DON'T mess up, it took about 25 minutes at MINIMUM, because the loading time for the zone was almost a minute on the 360 it was pain
