I have a HDS 12, Gen 3D on the console of my Triton 240 LTS. I tell people it is so much more than a fishfinder, sonar, GPS, etc. The amount of things it is capable of is astounding when compared to just a few years back. . Your video is very, very nicely done. You are well spoken, make it easy to follow along and understand. I will be experimenting and learning for a while to come. Your explanation helps to know I am navigating the unit correctly.... or incorrectly. Looking forward to Part 2 and other videos so I subscribed. . I have a MG, SW, Xi5, 36V, 105 that is Gateway linked to my HDS and that also adds a whole other way to be able to control the boat at the console. The Xi5 and the Gen 3D is a marriage made in fishing heaven. Plan to be adding some videos to my channel soon. . Thanks again. Great job!! .
Enjoyed the vid. I just bought an HDS12 Gen3 from a friend who sold his boat. It's my first fish finder and I feel like I need to go to some type of class to learn how to operate this thing. Just so many dang options and things you can change. I don't even know where to start. I guess I'll just keep watching tutorials on UA-cam until I get it figured out. You definitely helped some. Thumbs up.
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
Very good job. I have searched for informative videos on setting up and interpreting side scan. You provided very good and informative information. Much more detailed info is, I think, available but there is a price. Money. Thank you.
I was concerned when first you said "I'm new to this". Found your tutorial very clear, concise and informative. I have used Humminbird for 33 years. Have three Solix 12 Gen 3. My new boat came with a Lowrance HDS 12 Live and I'm kinda lost on what to do with it. Mostly my side scan does not show any images. One of my Solix is still in the box intended to replace the HDS 12 and sell the HDS 12. Thought I should give it a try before selling it. Thank You for your tutorial.
I just finished installing my HDS7 gen 3 unit today with the total scan transducer. I was messing around with it in the slip. your video will help immensely getting it personalized. Thanks!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I just moved a HDS7 from the helm to the bow and installed the HDS9 in it's place. Both are connected via ethernet through my SS module. I powered both up and was enjoying how they share waypoints and and transducer sources. Then I spent another hour freezing my butt off in a cold shop trying to figure out why my multiscreen view on the 9 had two side scan views with no downscan view? Your video cleared this up for me. Like you said, it was right there in front of me and I totally overlooked the option. Thank you
Dan, I recently purchased a 2016 Skeeter WX1910. My electronics include a HDS 9 & 12 gen3. I'm almost clueless how to operate so I look forward to your tutorials.
Great overview / tutorial Dan, well done... dont be bothered about it being too long.... its whats we want / need.... Question. What is the System Setting to use to select the big transducer i have TM260 50/200Khz with diplexer, i noticed you said they are not called this in the system. I also noticed you mentioned the system will automatically detect the 3D Structure scan transducer which i have too..... Cheers
Amazing vid, when will you be doing another for specific settings such as sensitivity, contrast and things like that? I have an HDS 7 Gen 3 and it works but I dont think its doing what its supposed to do so I moved my transducers to see if that would help. My unit has not helped me find structure or fish so this video will hopefully get me on a good track along with the simulation mode
Sorry for the delayed response, with UA-cam's new update I can actually reply through my mobile app. Did you ever get this worked out? Need any more tips at all?
Hey Guys! ☺️ I’ve been watching these videos for about 4 hours now to figure out how to use my Grandfather’s on the river to look for my Grandma because she’s missing. Are there any other tips you guys could give me to help me out? Thanks ☺️
Glad I found your channel. You mentioned that Lowrance contacted you about setting up for "fresh water" instead of shallow water". Did you get any other info on that? What more does it display, etc? Thanks in advance
Thanks, for this video. I haven't installed my unit on my boat yet but I plan to this coming week. I keep my boat in storage (I live just of the Detroit River and close to Lake Erie, so I am not able to install my unit around April 20th. Do you or any of your readers know if the new TotalScan Transducer works with the new Lowrance Elite-7 Ti. I've read reports where several people are not able to connect their unit to this new all-in-one transducer. I also have another question: I am not able to save my Time. When I choose my time and then hit save and then save again the unit appears to be working. But when I get out of the Time window the saved time doesn't show up.
one thing on network sonar. if you are running 2 units and they're connected when you select network sonar ON at the console your front unit will be using your transom sonar!
t greene you can actually have the setting on and still choose which transducer to read! Sometimes I'll read my structurescan from the back on my front graph.
Personally I prefer Sonar on top left, Downscan on top right, and Structurescan across the bottom. On Structure scan you want the screen as wide as possible to get the most detail. It's not important to me for how long it stays on the screen. Also during the day I prefer a blue background as the white shows up well in the bright sun.
Great Video Man!! In part two can I request for you to show more into the structure scan. How to read whats on the screen compared to where the actual structure is located in the water to say how far right or left are the objects. Thanks Man!
Wishing Lowrance had an adjustment for the gps antenna location relative distance to sonar transducer location. It would be an easy computation for the processor. The reason you need it is because the built in antenna is generally located at some distance from the transducer giving an incorrect lat/lon position anytime you want to mark something underwater. When you use your gps to relocate your underwater structure waypoint, the structure will be off at a random angle at however many feet. Of course you can purchase a separate external gps antenna and mount it directly over the sonar transducer location but that might not be a workable solution $$$.
Hi , I bought a used 22 footer with the hds9 and I get the water temp which is at the surface of about 81 degrees currently at ponce inlet FLA , but is there a way to get water temperatures at different depths with these units because water temperature is critical and so under talked about ,,,,,,,,,,,, going from 81 degrees at the surface in 20 feet to the ocean that's hundreds of feet has to have a huge variance that I would like to capitalize on if possible rather than just reef fishing ,. im not even sure if there are thermoclines in the ocean so any info on this unit would help about down depth and temps thanks for any available help
Hey when you recorded this video, how did you get it to not show the discolored lines on the screen or distortion? Mine is all scrambled looking when i video another digital screen.
Sebastian, thanks for the response. one more thing. I am trying to target stripers and hybrids, I use 1 to 2 oz spoons for this. When I'm on other people's boats, I can see the spoon on the graph, on mine I can't see it under or near the boat, but I do see it about 50 feet behind the boat. my 2d is looking down, and the side looks left and right. what else could that be?
Sorry, I didn't see your comment. Did you ever get it figured out? With the new UA-cam layout, I'm able to see comments right away. So let me know if I can still help!
I love just about everything with my new Lowrance Elite-7 Ti - I've used it three times and everything works except: I chose this unit because of your video on youtube. Here's my problem/question: When I use DownScan - whether it is by itself or if I use the Sonar Screen or Chart Screen with it in a split view - I cannot find SOG. It allows me to choose either COG or STW but even though the STW shows up - it never lets me see the actual numbers for my speed - just STW _ _ _ _. When trolling in Lake Erie or jig fishing in the Detroit River for walleyes, I want to see my Sonar Screen on top and my Downscan Screen which is underneath. But I cannot find SOG with this option. All that shows up is COG "Course Above Ground" and STW "Speed Though Water" but there isn't any real numbers showing my speed. Using the Chart or the Sonar choices the SOG shows up and I know how fast my boat is moving. But with trolling I want to have my Sonar Screen above my DownScan Screen and I need to see Depth - which it does and I need to see at what speed I'm trolling. Having the correct trolling speed is critical in catching walleyes in Lake Erie. One of my friends has a HDS Gen 3. He has the ability to have his SOG showing up on all choices and he has an extra box called GPS status and inside this there is a check box for Speed Over Ground - SOG. Do you know of a fix or maybe my unit doesn't allow SOG when I have the DownScan or SideScan on?
I would think both would have it, but if your friend has the same unit as me and you can't replicate it, that would be more of a Lowrance support question. If you did find out, can you reply and tell me please?
Hey Dan awesome job explaining the Lowrance Gen 3. I spent the day out on Lake Tahoe yesterday and got frustrated trying to figure the unit out so this helps me tremendously. Thanks again happy Fishing. Mike
On your three screen, left side scan, right 2d upper, right downscan lower.....wouldn't you get a better picture with the 2d and the downscan across the top and the side scan across the bottom. Reasoning: The two top screens would be the same size as before but the side-scan would double. Thus if 60 ft to the right before was two inches of screen now it would be four inches.....doubling the resolution. Also as explained to me by a Lowrance rep. you subtract the depth from the distance to side......60 ft. to the right minus the 20 ft depth is only 40 ft. If you look at the screen the first 20 ft is the water column. If you're looking to the right side it's actual the shape of an L 20 ft. Down/40 to right.
In your video, you say that setting up Wireless was simple after you got your password. How? Where? etc. did you get your password? Is the password what one would use to connect an iphone, ipad, etc to my house Xfinity connection? I believed I entered a wrong password and now I cannot find where I can put in my Xfinity password. How can I change this?
It would be your Xfinity password that you set up when the system was installed. If you don't have it, you can call Xfinity and have them change it. You would then use that password :)
The Gen 3s can’t tell the ghost what to do from what I’ve read. You can use the sonar functions, but since I don’t have a ghost, I can’t say for certain.
ctiger69 No I recorded it all and part of it was not visible due to glare so I'll get it done as soon as the ice is gone! Any particular things you want to see?
I have the HDI Skimmer up front that is attached to my trolling motor. This gives you 2D sonar down, plus downscan (looks like x-ray image). On the back inside the boat, I have the thru-hull 83/200 transducer and an exterior mounted StructureScan transducer. Three total!
jdamron311 This is why I made the video. The 83/200 has a tag on the cable stating which one you should choose in the settings. On mine, the cable that runs from the transducer says HST-WSBL :)
FHC Outdoors thank you. I am setting up a new 7 and just set to the 83/200kHz. So your saying I need to go back and select the one you mentioned or it will not be correct? Congratulations on the boat. Life long Skeeter owner and will always be.
jdamron311 You should see a silver tag, kind of looks like tape, stating which one you need to choose in the settings menu. It might be 83/200, or it might be the one I used. Do you have a tag on the cable?
I will have to check I am not with the boat at the moment it is kept at lake house. Really appreciate the vid and I will check and make the change if need be.
Yes you can, I run a thru hull transducer on the back for my speed and 2d sonar, but also have a structure can transducer for my side imaging that is mounted on the outside.
You sir have a dilemma! lol. I personally feel like Humminbird has a better sidescan image, but Lowrance seems to own the downscan efficiency. You also have to look at price and any available rebates and go with the best option for your money.
You need to add "Data overlays". Hit the power button to bring up the settings menu. Click the "add data overlay" butotn and then add your depth and speed. The unit will remember your settings for the future :)

Thanks for this video. I just purchased my first bass boat. 03’ Skeeter zx225. It has 2 gen 3 12’a on it. So this was really helpful.
Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I was struggling with the DownScan.
Glad it helped!

Larry, any new requests from you? I'm going to do many more videos this year, so I'm taking requests sir!
nice tutorial you found the down scan I have been looking for for hours, thank you.
finaly a video that actualy helps
Great video! You do a Great job of explaining and teaching. The best video I have found!
Excellent video Dan. Great help for basic settings.
Thanks for the tutorial - very helpful. Setting up the correct transducer was the information I required, which was explained perfectly!
Thank you for this just bought a skeeter today with these units on it. I'm new to all of this and I want to use it correctly. Thanks again
Hurry up with part 2. I for one really need it.
Michael Barnish I uploaded a second...StructureScan tutorial!
Thanks Dan!! Great video, I had updated my Hds 7 Gen 2 and it ha the new Gen 3 menu. This helped a great deal.....Keep up the good work !!

Sweet Video Dan! Can't wait to head back east and fish with you in that bad boy!
+FishingThePNW Yeah almost time!
Glad I found your channel. You mentioned that Lowrance contacted you about setting up for "fresh water" instead of shallow water". Did you get any other info on that? What more does it display, etc? Thanks in advance
It's how they perform their testing. So essentially, they wanted to clarify to use that setting since that is how they verify the unit!
Thanks, for this video. I haven't installed my unit on my boat yet but I plan to this coming week. I keep my boat in storage (I live just of the Detroit River and close to Lake Erie, so I am not able to install my unit around April 20th.

+matthew sampson You bet Matthew, I'll be working on part two this week!
I did upload that, just wanted to follow up with you!
Very helpful video. Thanks. Looking forward to part 2.
Great video and explanations as to why to do certain things.

You're right, the "puck" is an additional cost. But for $100 or so, I think it would be well worth the cost!
Thanks Dan very helpful can't wait for number 2.
+dwight bateman Thank you Dwight! Working on it this week.

thank you for the video, you make it more easy to understand.
Hey when you recorded this video, how did you get it to not show the discolored lines on the screen or distortion? Mine is all scrambled looking when i video another digital screen.
Great job. I'm just learning hds gen 3.
Thanks for this, I learned something new.
wow dan, nice boat. for sure gonna be nice this year in the spokane bass club

I would think both would have it, but if your friend has the same unit as me and you can't replicate it, that would be more of a Lowrance support question. If you did find out, can you reply and tell me please?
Go to chart, touch font size and then drag to any where or any screen you want
Down/40 to right.
good job on explaining things with examples!
Thanks for all your help
Thanks You have this explane SUPER Thanks Regards Wiel living in the Netherlands
You need to get an XI5 so you make a video on how to use trails and routes so i can figure out how to navigate a trail.
Great video, extremely more detailed.
Hi whats the transducer you using?
Lowrance needs to endorse your video. they are not very good at providing tutorials for their products.
I have a tm150 transducer what one should I select
I have the HDS 7 gen 3. How do I get the display to show hooks instead of the little picture of a fish?
You go to sonar and then settings, scroll down until you see fishiD and turn that off
In your video, you say that setting up Wireless was simple after you got your password. How? Where? etc. did you get your password? Is the password what one would use to connect an iphone, ipad, etc to my house Xfinity connection? I believed I entered a wrong password and now I cannot find where I can put in my Xfinity password. How can I change this?
It would be your Xfinity password that you set up when the system was installed. If you don't have it, you can call Xfinity and have them change it. You would then use that password :)
I'm trying to find how you get the Lowrance Gen 3 to talk to my Ghost trolling motor for Sonar
The Gen 3s can’t tell the ghost what to do from what I’ve read. You can use the sonar functions, but since I don’t have a ghost, I can’t say for certain.
Can the lowrance carbon be set up out of water?
Thank you so much lol I jsut bought a boat with this model, and i have been a humminbird guy for yeeaarrss....lol i was so lost
Very good explanation
Have you posted the part 2 video yet?
ctiger69 No I recorded it all and part of it was not visible due to glare so I'll get it done as soon as the ice is gone!
Any particular things you want to see?
Just wanted you to know I recorded part two and uploaded it as a StructureScan Tutorial!
structure scan tutorialFHC Outdoors
Excellent video, thank you!
Mike Outdoors thank you sir!
what transducer did you set this up with on your boat
I have the HDI Skimmer up front that is attached to my trolling motor. This gives you 2D sonar down, plus downscan (looks like x-ray image). On the back inside the boat, I have the thru-hull 83/200 transducer and an exterior mounted StructureScan transducer. Three total!
i have this messaged across the screen saying STOPPED not sure how to fix or correct that anyone??
How do I get my layouts on the page that shows them
Did I miss something??!! He mentioned the 83/200kHz transducers option was not on there?? @ 02:40 it clearly shows it being an option??
jdamron311 This is why I made the video.
So you saying I can run two transducers to one unit???.
Yes you can, I run a thru hull transducer on the back for my speed and 2d sonar, but also have a structure can transducer for my side imaging that is mounted on the outside.
Really nice video Dan! This HDS 9 Gen 3 is really awesome! I have had mine for over a rear now! Check out some of my videos! 🎣
I have a HDS7 same thing as HDS9 only smaller right?
RushinToFishin yes just size difference!
Thanks for the video!
