Moved up from a TI2 f to a HDS Live 9. Mostly Salt water in a kayak. I see a lot of guys using separate down scan and 2d screens. I found the fish reveal to give me more room on my one unit. I'd love to get your opinion.
You know I really haven't used fish reveal all that much. My understanding of fish reveal is that it is essentially trying to take the more distinguishable marks from 2D sonar, and overlay what the software is "guessing" is fish, and overlaying them onto the cleaner, and crisper, imaging of down scan. The issue with this for me, is that even though some images are harder to see on downscan (like a small fish) due to the higher frequency and the higher detail, I use down scan to get a more detailed image of fish, so I can ultimately decide whether I think they are bass or catfish, or some other species of fish.....or not a fish at all. By taking the less detailed image that the software "thinks" is a fish, and overlaying over the down scan image, I feel like I am just taking away the advantage of down scan being more detailed, and having better target separation. The way I use 2D is as a tool to see things at a quick glance because it paints with a broad brush, but in turn I use Down Scan to get a better understanding of what that is Im seeing on 2D. Anyways, that is my thought process, but without having a ton of experience with it I couldn't know for sure if my thoughts on it are reasonable or just biased.
If you want to get even more detail set up each locator with one view left only and the other view right only. You just doubled your viewing of each side. It's the only way I run mine.
I do the same with mine. I span both screens with side scan on the bottom half of the units and then put chart, 2d and down across the top halves of the units.
Agreed because I’ve got 3 HDS and I’m taking them off!Ive been with Lowrance for 20+ yrs but it’s time for a change.Garmins LIVESCOPE is so much more clearer than mine!Im putting 8616 at the bow and 8612’s at the helm
There are a lot of factors that go into what makes a good choice when it comes to choosing an electronics brand. Your individual fishing style, experience, and what technology you leverage to enhance your individual strengths all go into it. Garmin makes a great product, and as with anything, they have some strengths, but overall I chose Lowrance because I feel like my user experience is much easier and more seamless with their units, and Ive had experience with them all. Im a big believer in using what works for you.
excellent info - thank you ! sending positive vibes to you and your family
Thanks for the tips! Love my HDS Live 9
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching

Great idea! I’ve done that before, but might need to experiment with it even more.

First mistake is not having a Garmin!
