I heard this piece for the first time when I was 10 and this is the piece that actually introduced me to Handel. So listening to this after a decade truly brings back some childhood memories💛💙💜🤍
I heard this piece many times while growing up; not as a recording but for real, actual play in our house. My mother was Rebecca Lewis Wagner, graduate of Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music, and personally chosen student of world renowned harpist Carlos Salzedo. I vividly remember her playing this piece (and many others) as she practiced for upcoming concerts. While a student at Curtis, she played in the Curtis Symphony under Fritz Reiner. She was a founding member of the Barton Harp Quintet which toured the U.S.A. in the 1930s. Among her Curtis classmate friends were pianist Jorge Bolet, cellist Leonard Rose, violinist-conductor Oscar Shumsky, flutist Anton Winkler, and her collegiate roommate, pianist Constance Russell. While still a student, she temporarily filled a vacancy with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy, who encouraged her to accept a position with the Indianapolis Symphony upon her graduation from Curtis. In the 50's she played with the Salt Lake City Symphony under Maurice Abravanel, with the NBC Symphony under Auturo Toscanini, The Metropolitan Opera, and under Leonard Bernstein with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Her photo was scheduled for the cover of Time Magazine but was bumped by a photo of Winston Churchill just prior to U.S.A.'s involvement in WWII.
Popularity and attractions of her performance are immeasurable and off the charts, will transcend time and space and races of people
Lovely composition. Handel was a Master of the craft. Great performance.
