Paul Simon's prolific writing & Art Garfunkel's calm and soothing delivery made this song one of America's most popular songs. Garfunkel's classic, casual wardrobe, with both his hands behind his jean pockets, in front of 500,000 fans in Central Park, made this one of music's most iconic, solo, live performances ever. Thank you for BOTH for your wonderful reactions to Simon & Garfunkel, gentlemen!

@firefighterchick The movie "The Graduate" is a great movie, made even better by the soundtrack and Mrs. Robinson is another timeless classic. We should do that one to follow up soon Cheers
Paul's writing and Art's vocal talents paired to create some of the best music ever recorded. Sound of Silence; Bridge Over Troubled Water; The Boxer; Homeward Bound; I Am a Rock; Scarborough Fair; El Condor Pasa; just to name a few. Anything of theirs you choose will not disappoint. However brief their partnership, Paul continued with a successful solo and writing career. Check out: Kodachrome; Mother and Child Reunion; Still Crazy After All These Years; Graceland and 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover. Great reaction.....can't wait to hear what you pick next! Thank you!!!
Every time I watch this, every time he steps back and does a little fist pump because he knows he nailed it, I just about leap from my chair to give an ovation with the folks in the park.
I hadn’t noticed that before. I think I usually see the performance from one of the other nights that week, where Paul joins him on the third verse. Art looks so casual it’s hard to realize that he must have felt some pressure when he did that crescendo at the end. Wouldn’t want to goof up in front of 500,000 of your most ardent fans. (I’ve actually seen estimates from 400,000 to a million. Definitely more than 10,000!)
The Concert in Central Park, September 19, 1981, was a free benefit concert on the Great Lawn in Central Park, New York City, where the pair performed in front of 500,000 people.
@joeyrobison6629 Thanks for the comment joey. This is one of those songs that's can transcends any genre, be it Country or Metal. If you enjoy music this just touches you. All the best
I was in 7th grade when that album came out. Our teacher used the albums lyrics to teach us about figurative language. I still remember the lessons. Today, I'm 67 and still amazed by Simon and Garfunkel.
This has always been a favorite song (and performance) of mine. As you mentioned, it's very comforting. I feel it from the point of a friend standing by when in need. But also God watching over you when in need. A quick note: I've seen this same video, but in full with no parts cut out to shorten it. When Art looks over to the side right before he starts singing "Sail on silver girl", he's looking to see if Paul is going to join him singing as he does on the recorded version. In the video I saw, Paul gives Art a nod to show that Art should continue on his own. In this particular performance, I think it was the right choice.
The lyrics are timeless. Could be a man singing his devotion and protection to his girlfriend or…a parent to their child, or Christ to our troubled souls.
It's not just like the record, it's better than the record. Art completely knocked it out of the park with this performance, with his hands tucked into his pockets like he was playing in a small club, rather than in front of a mere half a million audience.
I was there that night but we found ourselves crowded under a bush just to be able to straighten our legs. Then the music started so far away we really couldn't hear it and left, trying not to step on hands on our way out..There was about the same number of 500k people there as at Woodstock 1969. I believe it was the largest crowd I'd ever been a part of. I went back two years later to see Diana Ross in Central Park and was actually able to hear and enjoy her show in a crowd of about 350k. But I'm 70 now and I think 5 people in an elevator is too crowded.
This was the theme of my high school prom in 1970. I’m soon to be 72 and it still brings tears. Ps it was more than 10k it was over 500,000 in attendance in Central Park that day.
I had the concert in Central Park album. I was still in high school in 1981. Geeze, I feel old now 😂 Great album! This one was always my favourite song. Nice reaction, guys! 👍❤️🇦🇺
You should also listen to this song in the studio version. In that recording Paul Simon is singing the last verse/part together with Ard Garfunkel and their voices blend realy amazing.
Thanks Nicholas for an excellent suggestion. And thanks to you guys BP1 and BP2 for another awesome reaction. What a great example of what music was like during the early 1970s. For me, the older music, generally speaking, is more appealing than most modern day music. Probably because I'm old. Simon and Garfunkel's legacy lives on.
@Hawk-ODA212 Not sure it's about being old, as you have picked and enjoyed some great new artists too. It may be more to do with the nostalgia trip we get when hearing something from our past and being transported back there. These guys have such great harmonies but this solo song was impressive and we really were a little lost for words
Thank you for your kind words, Hawk. I fully agree with your comments. The fact that we can't find music like this anymore makes us cherish/appreciate the classic songs EVEN MORE! Thanks again!
@@BritPopsReact You make a very valid point. And it makes sense. I have been a bit more nostalgic lately for some reason. Burt still loving the journey.
When I was 10 living back in NYC, I took guitar lessons with my friend Lou Pearlman. His parents invited me to dinner and told me to bring my guitar. I walked in and Lou introduced me to his cousin Art Garfunkel. I had no idea who he was. I believe at the time S&G had released their first album. He tried out my guitar and signed an autograph for me that I still have. Lou went on to form NSYNC and The Backstreet Boys.
Thank you for this live version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water", one of the most beautiful songs ever. Many have sang it, including Elvis Presley, but no one ever came close to Art Garfunkel's recording or live performances. Take care (hope these storms stop).
@Almcosta25 Thank you for the nice comment and lovely to hear you enjoyed the song. We have one storm pass us by and another on the way, we seem to be very popular with storms at the moment,
Elvis blows this away ..... LIVE ...... NO-ONE DOES LIVE LIKE ELVIS ...... You must of not heard it ...... Or your just trying to sound your own horn ..... No Brag ..... Just Fact .....
There is a video out there that chronicles the making of this album. Including this song itself. Really great trivia and information about the who what and where's of these songs. There is something about their vocals. They are great separately but there is some magic when they are together. They knew it when they were just boys. They are great together.
Art Garfunkel demonstrated his innate humility at the end when he stepped back and bowed slightly to the crowd - no outward display to draw attention or distract from the song and its effects on the crowd...
My all time favorite performance by Art. Did you notice Paul Simon sitting in the background? Paul said that they “were really best friends up until ‘Bridge over Troubled Water.' The harmony of the friendship, was broken from there on out, said Simon. The fact that Art had a role, around that time, in the movie Catch 22, added flame to the fire.
I understand why people enjoy watching live concerts. And although Si & Gar do a great job live, you are really missing out on so much by not first hearing the studio versions (both this song and Sound of Silence). That's where the music becomes truly transcendent.
Go for the studio album version of this song, lots of production effects that just can't be replicated live. This was a reunion concert years after they broke up, and they were barely speaking to each other.
This is my favourite performance of my all time favourite song, despite the fact that he messes up the words (and nobody seems to notice). No better combination of lyrics, music and singing in the history of music as far as I'm concerned.
I understand some people prefer live performances, but for songs like this, the production values of the studio version are the star of the show. It is silly to introduce yourselves to a classic like this with a live performance first. For your edification, hear the album piece.
I'm living in a hard experience with this emotion in Medellin right now. There are people passed out all around me when I walk down the block to find some food and some of them wake up and follow me to try to get some money and I turn them down because honestly I'm pretty broke myself and I can't help everyone out, but my heart is aching all the time. I want to empathize and react to my empathy because that is the moral thing to do as well as what my heart tells me to do, but I have to resist it and be cold because doing the opposite could fuck my life up in an instant. I wish the world was as easy to deal with as songs like this make it out to be, but "being a little kinder" is a shout from a very far away hill. Life is pain. It doesn't have to be, but it is what we've made it. Let's try to do better. We're inherently selfish, but at the moment that I can spare a meal for someone else and that action won't cause me to starve I will do so, and have done so, so let's try to be better.
Well, this is not from the concert in Central Park, Paul Simon is not there, however it shows the beauty of Art Garfunkel’s voice Paul was the star, Art was the back up. Way to go Art Garfunkel!
This is awesome! I love Garfunkel's voice here. The studio version is a little better. But to be honest, I prefer Elvis's 1970 version. Paul Simon was at the show Elvis sang this and said, "How the hell can we compete with that?"
Totally was DETERMINED to stay up to date, but as is usual in Chez Tundiel, everything went 'bits' up, with the entire household falling like dominoes with the glorious norovirus. Highlights included a hospital visit for Little Dude, and yours truly actually taking a week off sick and sleeping the better part of two days. It was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Amywho! Knew you'd enjoy this. I've seen it countless times. I'm quite stunned that you hadn't seen it before now because it is - as you say - such an iconic song. Just all over goosebumps. ❤ So I mentioned PTX in the 'Sound of Silence' reaction, now I'm going to mention my Welsh boi and his muckers in The Big Push. Their original 'Swan Song' is very folksy, and others have said it reminds them of Simon & Garfunkel. It's worth a listen. ua-cam.com/video/2AFA4sF69mY/v-deo.htmlsi=nmGaAfS5XbaQWWTo Left a link because, well, I'm cheeky like that. And also because I'm still crying that you did the wrong I shot the Sheriff and Money Game part 2. Really. Still crying. * *More laughing than crying to be truthful, but there are tears, trust me 😂😂😂
@tundiel Sorry to hear the Tundiel House went "bitz up". Never seen this actual video or the Central Park concert, but I am going to find it and watch the whole event. I have heard the song before, but watching them perform live and it sounding as good as the recording is extra special. Hope you are feeling better and up for a Zoom call on Friday, we are hoping to have a few on there, with Angy, Hawk, Ben Troy and maybe Cheryl. I have noted down the link and we will revisit the "Big Push" soon. Cheers
@@BritPopsReact The Big Push are right up your street, and almost all of their videos are live recordings. Re the Zoom call, I am plotting as we speak 😉
I would rather you review another concert of theirs besides this one. Or the recorded. Concerts are great for the crowd sound but the actual song interpretation gets altered almost always just to change it up. Not always my fav.
This was sort if an anthem to end the 1960's. Grammy award - Song of the year for 1970. There is only one acceptable version of this for me...Art Garfunkel, who just showed the difference between an artist and h hack. Make no mistake, Art Garfunkel is an artist with with a gift as is Paul Simon. And the studio version is a work of art [and Art]. Even Elvis doing "Elvis" on this song is not acceptable to me, so many go to Elvis without knowing the original studio version....Larry Knechtel, studio musician invented the piano part you do NOT hear in this live version, the pianist on this pales in comparison the the studio version, substituting lame chords etc. not in the original. Go listen to the original.
This is great but once you hear Elvis cover this you will never look back. I think it was Paul Simon who said, after hearing Elvis cover the song, we might as well give up now! Can you react to Elvis version, it is AMAZING ❤
Live version is a poor imitation of the studio version. Loses the effect of all the orchestration and beautiful arrangements. For your own edification, listen to the album version of the song.
Art singing this with his hand in his pocket, like it was no big deal for him to sing so perfectly
Paul Simon's prolific writing & Art Garfunkel's calm and soothing delivery made this song one of America's most popular songs.
Paul Simon was at the show Elvis sang this and said, "How the hell can we compete with that?"
i like it better when they both sing together, just sayin.
Listen to The Boxer.
So I mentioned PTX in the 'Sound of Silence' reaction, now I'm going to mention my Welsh boi and his muckers in The Big Push. Their original 'Swan Song' is very folksy, and others have said it reminds them of Simon & Garfunkel. It's worth a listen.

Left a link because, well, I'm cheeky like that. And also because I'm still crying that you did the wrong I shot the Sheriff and Money Game part 2. Really. Still crying. *
*More laughing than crying to be truthful, but there are tears, trust me 😂😂😂
@tundiel
Sorry to hear the Tundiel House went "bitz up".
Re the Zoom call, I am plotting as we speak 😉
the studio version is 10 times better
I would rather you review another concert of theirs besides this one. Or the recorded. Concerts are great for the crowd sound but the actual song interpretation gets altered almost always just to change it up. Not always my fav.
I like you guys.
React to the boxer by Simon and Garfunkel
Studio version much better, the live version you can’t get the impact of the wonderful orchestration
He fumbled the 2nd verse, and sang the 3rd verse twice.
Please also do the Elvis version. This is ethereal. Elvis’s is full of emotion and different enough that it is worth your time. Both are amazing.
Sorry but those were the days😊❤️
do yourselves a favor and listen to the studio recording
Check Out Elvis Presley Bridge Over Troubled Water 🌊 Better
