- TESSERACT - DYSTOPIA // Recorded live during our first rehearsal run-through of a festival set, on 28th July 2022.
This is the exact mix I had going into my in-ear monitors. It went through another few hours of tweaking after this but what you're hearing here is a pretty decent representation of what I hear on stage.
We were also only jamming with one of our two guitarists here (Acle), so the mix is a little empty. James is joining us tomorrow.
You may or may not be able to tell but I'm jet-lagged AF here. Rather than upload a note-perfect/edited performance - as seems to be the trend with 99% of the videos online these days - I think it's cool to show you guys a human performance of this track. If you dig this approach, let me know and I'll continue to upload videos in this style.
This is one of the ways I love to practice - I'll watch back a performance of myself and clearly identify the moments that need more work. I have a free drum lesson on this very practice here: jaypostones-dr...

The emperor of ghost notes continues his reign.
He's the Bojo of ghost notes 😂
@@hamilkarbarkas8711 wait - I’m the bumbling moronic clown of ghost notes? Proper harsh
@@JayTesseracT 😂😂 I was referring to you holding onto your power as king of ghost notes. You'll never step down. 😁
@@JayTesseracT How dare you talk about the Senate that way?
@@hamilkarbarkas8711 if my team and the world around me continually tell me I’m shit, I might step down 😂
Hearing how incredibly tight this is with the metronome click track is so satisfying.
years of dedication
absolutely stellar performance by the cubase click
This makes me respect Mike Malyan even more, even accepting that gig took some balls, Tesseract drums aint easy!
The drum parts of some Tessrract songs are really really hard. You must be an late intermediate or an advanced drummer to pull them off
Really love this drummer and this band
solid player. however, any decent drummer will play like this. it's part of what comes naturally after a certain level is understood. ghost note syncopation in between back beats or accents is sophomore year of drum college. also, if one grew up playing more advanced music, like fusion, or any jazz background, this will always come naturally. there is perpetual motion with all limbs for any good drummer.
@cmtcfu Link to you playing lol
@cmtcfu Link to you playing lol
So sick, can't wait for the next album man.
That snare drum sounds incredible! 🤘🏻
DW stainless steel 14” x 6.5” - we used it for most of the tracks on the new record. It just has the edge over the brass snare for me. Really cuts. Especially with an Evans heavyweight head
@@JayTesseracT It bet it cuts through that mix like a hot knife through butter! Speaking of which I'm starving.
Ever since I heard “One” by you guys and Heights “Salvation and Trepidation” - you’ve became one of the biggest drumming idols to me. Your ghost notes and odd time work - I just, man I can’t state enough how formative your music and drumming has been in my life.
Thank you, Jay Postones -
Thanks for the very kind words Zach!
This is pure groove ..
Sick af!!
Jay has the ability, much like Gavin Harrison, to make complicated beats and fills sound less complicated and accessible. It's speaks to his musicianship and playing for the song first.
Yes Jay! More of this style of vid pls!
So fluid and relaxed. Impeccable technique. Bravo 👏
You and Mark Heron (Oceansize) are probably my favourite drummers of all time. As a guitarist that records at home, I alternate between the two of you for my midi drum writing inspirations.
This was the song that has introduced me to the band. Great groove.
This is insane, amazing
“Imperfect take” sounds pretty damn perfect to me haha. Great playing
So yeah... what cheesy said.
I love having the metronome in the background. Allows me to fit even more rhythms into what you're already playing.
Esse cara é muito técnico um dos melhores que já vi. Tesseract uma das minhas preferidas.
Toca de terno né... Brabo demais.
Demais mesmo! Uma das minhas também
Easily the most satisfying drummer to watch- not to mention those unearthly drum tones for just the rehearsal??? Amazing my man, can't wait to see more content!!
So clean ❤
Jay, I’ve always loved @03:23 where your follow through on the kick drum after the guitars lay back off the previous bars’ syncopation. It’s just the sickest! It’s like a layer has been peeled back and the kick is remembering what once was, hammering it into our ears. Just always wow, man.
Yes! need more videos. This is awesome. Great job! and tesseract needs to come back to Atlanta soon.
What a beast
This was neat! Thanks for the upload!
I love this
This is so sick!! Thanks for posting
My favourite track from my favourite album. This is really beautiful and sick at the same time! 😍
Everything you do sounds so easy and effortless until I sit behind the kit and I feel like I'm learning how to play all over again. You're a one of a kind drummer man
Absolutely loving it how much Jay is rocking this room!
This (followed by Hexes) has been the first song in my daily drum playlist for about 4 years straight now. Wakes up the body and mind before blasties. Thank you for writing such great parts, Jay
Soooo nice to hear TesseracT with real drums for once. :D Kit sounds fantastic, those Meinls sound killer, & just a pleasure to watch the master at work.
Fantastic. cheers
Loving the meinl sound! Fits perfectly
Love this style, great, melodic, precision, groove, excellent
Insane
I've always loved your sound behind the kit so much man, precise power. The meinls sound great too!
This Song is SO fun to play!
Ty 4 playing
That section with the up beats on the stack is one of the stank facest grooves in heavy music
what's the timestamp for that?
@@gyrfalcon231:45 but go back to 1:35 so you get the lead-in
Jay, this is FANTASTIC. Thank you for taking the time to put this together for us mega fans. It’s really nice to see where you place your hits against the metronome and how you use it to bounce off of the groove in certain sections. 11/10.
The way that kit sounds... Dayum.
It’s so nice to see you jamming with your mates again…..can’t wait to see y’all live in the states again!
we're all human and that's a good point to make about overly-perfect posts...
This is just beautiful to watch/hear :)
Excelent drummer! Excelent band !!!
This "jetlagged attic rehearsal" recording sounds so fucking good! So happy Craig Reynolds turned me on to you guys!
Excellent drumming!
Thank you for playing live without any further editing, we need it
This sounds like the metronome I use. Great playing as always!!
You absolutely killed it at Knotfest yesterday, amazing show!
Damn, this Meinl stack really works well with Tesseract's sound!
Love it, always been curious about what musicians have in their ears during gigs.
Love the bit where the singer asks if the airco is on 😅
wow!!!
One of my favorite songs from this band.
Awesome! Love these vids!
Had such a blast seeing you at Knotest Germany! Was really worth the long drive!
Insane octopus
dude, the passion and the dedication you play is freaking impressive, even in a rehearsal
Love this kind of video man!
Hope to see more of it
It is great to see you guys rehearsal
This is sick, I love this, please more!
so good! i learned this song on drums a couple of years ago and it's still my favorite to jam to.
Next time you guys are in Southern California I will be there!
Wow! Sounds perfect! 🥁🤘🏻
More of this!
Superb playing, bro! Can't wait to see you guys in March.
Dude, you never cease to amaze me!
The set sounds phenomenal, awesome work as usual Jay. I like the IEM edits because with the modulations and complex rhythms its easy to get lost in the sauce.
Awesome stuff, Jay!
I’ve been a fan of your creation for nearly 10 years, absolute perfection! All of you!
you guys killed it at knotfest! It was my first concert and it was an amazing experience to hear you guys live!!
ah yes, ill be early and go right at the front next time to get a shot at the drumstick xD
Definitely enjoyed this "raw" and "chilling" format, nice place to rehearsal btw
This sure was a treat to watch!
Sheer joy! You look absolutely happy to be there brother. Complete fluidity and focus... love it🤘🏼
This is such a fucking TreaT! Always so inspired by your ability to lock me in to your groove for so long.
Just love your style of playing so much. More videos like this please!
Amazing as always Jay! 🔥🔥🔥
Things are sounding NAS TAY 😩 F*****g sick man.
Amazing as always!
Incredible drumming as always. Can't wait to see you lads back in Greece, we had a great time last time :D
You have a way of making the song so solid.
The amount of talent in this man's hands is something I'll never have in my entire body.... that sounds kinda weird but you get what I mean 😂. Keep being awesome Jay
Now that’s a juicy iem mix!
Amazing
The kit is sounding SO good!
Don’t suppose we could get more of these Jay? It’s so good and as much as I love Dystopia I’d love to see others maybe the newer ones? But saying that the full gig drum cam from Athens was immense! I still watch it about once a month
Loads more are coming, I promise. Also… might have a few Meinl vids dropping soon 🤘🏻
great approach because its human correcting human here. Carry on his path. its plenty good and concise
So insanely good. Unbelievable stuff Tess boys
Just reminding everyone who the king of groove is
damnnnnnn, that snare sound soooooooo gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood
Love it! Saw you guys live in South Africa a couple of years ago and the gig was fricken amazing!
You're a beast! I'll never forget when Tesseract played at The Drunken Unicorn in Atlanta GA. You're presence on the kit and ability to morph time left a lasting impression on me as a musician. As you all continue to do. I'm primed and ready for the new album! I still wish I could see After the Burial and Tesseract share a stage someday! A boy can dream right? Cheers!
Was this the Cloudkicker tour? That was a great show, one of my favorites.
Thanks for that Jay
Yeah I agree, in this age of "grid takes" It's nice to get back to just a vibe take sometimes. Killer performance. Cheers.
Thanknyou for this sir jay!! Cheers!!
the ghost notes, the fat sounding kit, the crunchy meinls. perfect.
Good god. What talent he has.
Incredible groove!
Really nice pocket. Thanks for sharing the IEM mix. I'm curious - as a drummer, I've often relied on the vocals a bit to track progression through longer, sometimes repetitive sections. Why no vox in your ears?
I can't give his specific answer, but I'm a drummer who doesnt like vocals in my ears because the frequency makes it hard to hear our click sometimes, plus I like to make sure I'm REALLY locked in with the strings and with ADHD I risk getting lost in the magic of a good vocalist if I can hear it.
@@jalen2467 Guitarist here. Same reason.
Same here, I barely have vocals on my IE mix.
Can only speak for myself, as a drummer, but I have the vocals barely audible in my mix. I don't need to hear them, and I don't have them easily audible because I'll get distracted from the parts that matter, but it just feels too robotic if I don't have them at all.
Excellent timing and ability to lock with the click brother. I love this bands past releases and can't wait to hear the rest of the material.
Nice ! Ty for this masterclass :D
This is so awesome! Had me drumming with the one arm left 😃
Awesome performance! Great energy and great sound!
