You mean coffee liqueur (e.g. Kahlua) and tequila? That drink actually first appeared in Trader Vic's Pacific Island Cookbook back in 1968 as the 'Brave Bull', so it predates Archer by decades. There are arguably as many cocktails that've been forgotten as there are waiting to be made.
I've had it as well, Tequila and Kaloua over ice. Actually nice. But kaloua is a Mexican liquor, so a normal black Russian would also parts Mexican if done with that specific coffe liquor right?
If I remember correctly, this drink comes from the episode where Sterling Archer sticks his manhood into his shaving kit and cuts himself after being walked in on, so the sponsorship here seems very appropriate.
In the Netherlands a Green Russian was already a thing before the show. The recipe was basically the same as a White Russian, but you'd use cannabis infused cream.
You missed the crème de menthe. The 'How to Archer' handbook has its own cocktail section and states: 2 ounces absinthe 2 ounces vodka 1 ounce crème de menthe 2 ounces milk (Pam, being a lost cause, uses heavy cream) It's drinkable, but very much like toothpaste in flavour.
Gateaux Q Yeah, here a green Russian is usually just creme de menthe and vodka (basically a stinger, but on ice). We did a variant once with vanilla vodka, menthe and milk. I thought it tasted awful but it sold really well.
Most of the time they are made from whatever is around so yeah they are pretty much going to be nasty and show that he's an alcoholic. Like a teenagers concoctions where they just mix whatever liquor their parents have into one drink.
Someone on Archer is very into alcohol “It’s just a Bloody Mary. And by the way, not a great one, Mr. Vodka and Ketchup.” “Sour mix in a Margarita? What is this, Auschwitz?”
Followed your instructions on the White Russian video and made my coffee liqueur, but added cinnamon to it. Man, it goes so well with the toasted cream... Cheers, mate!
The most recent Archer cocktail is the Moscow Mousse (barbicide and hair gel). A non-toxic version should be vodka, ginger syrup, blue curacao, and (to reflect the flavor of most scented hair gels) either amaretto, crème de cacao, Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum or Captain Morgan's Coco Loco.
Great vid, always like those that get a bit more technical. I would really like to see more videos like the "Ode to..". Take a very simple drink like you did with Vodka soda (if I remember correctly) and just make plenty of spinoffs, infuse it with fruits, try different types of tonics/sodas, different herbals and spices. Love them. Keep It up mate cheers.
Absinthe...had it once and ended my 17th birthday in the process...here is a top tip don't confuse it for creme de menthe and knock back an undiluted double in one go
I wonder how many people actually make these drinks. I made this one today and, hot dog, it is really really great and complex - herbaceous, floral, and smooth. Definitely looking forward to serving it to some friends on new year's (over some crystal clear ice, of course!).
Straining takes "upwards of 30 minutes" - I strained it through a cheesecloth, then through multiple strainers of increasing meshes, then through coffee filters. I had to change my coffee filter a bunch of times (prob went through 10) since the curd residue was really slowing things down. It took me prob 90-120 minutes in total.
Love your stuff, man! On point mixing! I hate to be that guy, but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere. There's a second official recipe for the Green Russian that, while still terrible, is more palatable than 1oz vodka, 1oz absinthe, 2oz cream. It comes from the book "How To Archer," which is written in character as Sterling and I believe licensed by the studio. It gives 2oz vodka, 2oz absinthe, 1oz creme de menthe and 2oz milk "(Pam, being a lost cause, uses heavy cream)," shaken over ice and strained into an ice filled Collins glass. "Drink, while thinking about the decisions that have brought you to this very spot, at this very moment." It...definitly lives up to the portrayal in the show. Not that that's a good thing in this case.
You should pass the liquid back throught the nut bag after the first straining. The curds will act as a filtration device and clarify after 2 or 3 strainings.
Do you think that we could also add an absinthe rinse in the glass so we can still keep that spirit of the drink? It would also result in a less strong version of the absinthe taste without getting rid of it
I used to work at a restaurant and I would make “Farmer’s daughters” at our work parties. The drink is just pint of whole milk and a double shot of vodka. Most people were opposed to them... until they had a few drinks in them. But once everybody was good and drunk, the night usually ended with people drinking several of them and everyone throwing up milk in someone’s backyard. We used to go out to this huge local cantina for everyone’s birthdays and for mine everyone drank a Farmer’s Daughter. Good times.
Would adding the sugar to the hot green tea be more effective or take away from the acid? I'm assuming the tea helps the lime juice in the acidity department.
Can you make a milk punch with honey rather than sugar? Like say with a honey syrup? or instead of making a honey syrup, adding the honey to the tea when it is hot so it mixes well, and you don't add extra volume from the water used making a honey syrup.
If you cranked up the milk and down the absinthe would it be better? Although that reminds me of my worst drink mistake; 2 shots of absinthe mixed with a can of red bull. I was going for something ridiculous but it was undrinkable even with a lot of dilution which should have helped the absinthe. No saving that drink though.
You should absolutely try some of the drinks from the destiny official cookbook. I'm making a drink called the wavesplitter but they have so many more.
I know you used the vodka to stay true to the inspiration, but do you think subbing it with gin would work well? Seems like it would work with the chartreuse and tea well, but Im not really confident enough in my knowledge of spirits to say for certain.
Haha I remember when you made the peppermint patty and the green russian was previewed as a patron video. I knew drinking that would be death to the palette 😂
At first I thought I was like "Oh, creme de menth, vodka, and cream. That's doesn't sound half bad." Then you mentioned that the green was from absinthe and my face just turned in on itself.
Will a person with lactose intolerance be able to stomach this drink without any issues or does the curdling and filtering processes have nothing to do with the lactose?
Just an idea... replace the absinthe in the original recipe with chartreuse, then 1/2 teaspoon of absinthe for the aroma. It's pretty sweet, but not bad... best dayum Green Russian you'll have!
Huh. What you described in the second attempt really reminds me of a drink I came up with and served at a convention in 2011 called Limes Against Humanity. It was a LOT limier, because we sun brewed yerba mate instead of the green tea, with lime slices in it. Also since it was loaded to hell and back with limes, we went with a base of tequila instead of vodka. I guess they're quite a bit different since there was also no clarified milk. :) Still, if you ever want to feature Limes Against Humanity, I can try to recreate it in my bar and give you something resembling a recipe.
So, turns I was drinking fancy cocktails after school? Pro tip: substitute Tarchun for Kolokolchik or Buratino if you're from Russian south and know of those.
I would say that even trading out absinthe for the green Chartreuse or maybe green creme de menthe would improve the drink at least partially, even if the end result is mediocre at best.
What other Archer cocktails should I recreate? Here's the Peppermint Patty: ua-cam.com/video/njI5tHKd4v8/v-deo.html
Awesome I’m going to try this out!!! Thanks for teaching us!!
all of them
A recreation of the Mississippi Queen would be pretty badass.
Bloody Mary/Caesar
Horatio Cornblower please

Ive actually tried it, and well, it's not bad but its an acquired taste. Next time i think ill try it with white tequila over blue agave.
I've had it as well, Tequila and Kaloua over ice. Actually nice.
But kaloua is a Mexican liquor, so a normal black Russian would also parts Mexican if done with that specific coffe liquor right?

I drink this. It's... well, it's a way to get absinthe into your body. You can also add a little creme de CACOW.
The creme de menthe would really help kill some of that anise flavor.

There was a version in the tie-in book How To Archer which added a bunch of Creme de Menthe, which gives it some colour and masks the taste a bit.

Clarified milk punch is very underrated. That said I guess I understand why. Too many ppl are grossed out by egg whites let alone clarified milk.
