On Holding your cat. My cat was a young adult when I got her and wasn't handled. hated being picked up. I started by just picking up right before feeding and putting her down as soon as she wanted. also, rather than cradling, let her sit inside your elbow, its much more natural. after doing this for a while, Id just pick her up at random and stand there. don't move, just hold for a second, and bump up the time. once you can do this and have her relax to purring, its time for the fun step.
this is a game I call spaceship. she should be totally fine with being picked up by now, so pick her up with your arm under her belly, hand on the chest, and legs dangling. once she is OK with that, move slowly in whatever direction she is looking. once she understood SHE was in control, she LOVED the game. the elevation, the effortless movement, all the new things to sniff. fascinated by doorknobs and light switches. access to all the high shelves. she loves the top shelf of my wardrobe, and now asks to go up.
    trust n patience

Yeah, the key to getting cats used to being held starts with letting them down gently as soon as they want down. Keep that up long enough and they eventually realize that you'll put them down whenever they want and just chill out in your arms. Also, totes yes to the spaceship thing!! Keep them interested in new experiences by slowly moving to what they are looking at like you do. Holding them up to windows is GREAT. I did that with a cat that hates being held and she let me hold her for a minute because she was so fascinated at the new view out the window.

My old cat loved being picked up by me. I would have her front paws over my pack shoulder and support her lower body. She was so relaxed and would practically melt into my arms. I still miss her to this day since she would let me pick her up and hold her for however long I wanted since she knew I wouldn’t drop her and put her back down gently.

yes! we do have one cat whose hated being picked up her whole life (not even my mom could get her adjusted to it and she’s 11-12 years old) and i only pick her up if i absolutely can’t get her to move. then there’s my cat Crescent who is getting used to being held. i should definitely try walking him around to show him things. he will tolerate me holding him but then i put him down once i can tell he’s over it. and thennn there’s Crutch, who will actually cry until you hold him by having him slung over the shoulder and his bottom is supported. i will rock him while walking around the house until he’s done being a big baby lmao.

And then there's my best friends' late cat. (she sadly passed away of old age late last year) She LOVED being picked up by him and his wife. To the point where she'd start purring right away if they did. xD

This is so important! I have two cats, brother and sister from the same litter, I raised them both as unfortunately they were abandoned at 4weeks without their mother. So they’re pretty close and pretty alike.
My girl LOVES tummy rubs and her favorite is tummy kisses! My boy on the other hand does the typical, bite and claw, when you pet his tummy.
Now my boy LOVES butt pats. He’ll jump up and arch his back to ask for butt pats. His sister? No. Don’t. Stop it. Don’t do that. Probably one of the only times I’ve seen her get super upset.
Now, neither really like to be held but they’re only a little over a year old and are still very high energy. I’m sure they’ll settle as they grow older and I can hold them then. :)

Disclaimer: de declawing your cat and clipping their nails (shown in the video) are not the same!

    • @sazzle312
      @sazzle312 2 роки тому +52

@@saraschriner9797 You could try softpaws nailcaps, but opinions on this vary. I have tried them on one of my grandmother's indoor cats because she had blood clotting issues, and the cat was fine with them. It's actually a myth that nailcaps prevent the claws from retracting or damage them, as long as you use them right.
If your cat is an outdoor cat I would strongly advise against nail capping or even clipping, though. Nails are a cat's first line of defense and primary toolset, and removing them can pose a great risk to them, or cause anxiety/ oral fixation.
If your cat is still young, you could teach them to play with soft paws, most british shorthairs seem to do this naturally already. But results, if any at all, vary depending on the individual. The most important part is not using your hands as a cat toy, and immediately ending play or cuddles if nails are used.
Unfortunately, sharp nails are part of the package when it comes to cats, and thanks to evolution there isn't any real way to blunt them other than manual intervention.

@@sazzle312 id just like to say as a vet tech that you *must* clip the nails of a cat before attaching nail caps to the claws. The will not wear down the claws with caps on and they can overgrow and injure the cat.
I strongly advise actually clipping your cat's nails every two weeks if you prefer to keep them short so it keeps them healthy and will not over grow and harm them as they age. Older cats have a hard time shedding the layers of their claws.

I do still stand with my opinion that I would rather not clip the nails of my outdoor cats, but I completely agree that it would be best to clip them for senior cats, especially if they don't climb as much anymore.
My late senior cat remained healthy and was still a big climber to the age of 24, so we decided not to clip her nails, but we did keep a close eye on them when grooming her.

So even though we do feed our Cats and Dogs good water and canned food, they chose to drink the dirty muddy water outside which caused both our Dog who was with us ever since 2009 and our Cat who was with us ever since 2004 to both lay on their side breathing in a very erratic way. Our Dog was the first to go 2 days after they drank that water, our Cat lasted another 2 weeks but he eventually left us as well. They always depict declawing cats as trimming in these videos, which is actually good for some cats (especially if they don't have a scratching post to keep their claws in good condition, or are older) when declawing cats is actually a much more disturbing surgical procedure in which the base of the toes are actually removed (in part anyway) to prevent the claws from growing back at al. Trimming a cat's claws is not dangerous if done safely and by a professional groomer or a vet, but isn't necessary if your cat is active and healthy. I imagine they probably depict it the way they do here to avoid disturbing content, but it kinda makes it look like trimming is super harmful when it isn't.

Also when cats are climatized to something especially when they're very young as a kitten they're definitely more likely to like something different when they get older than lets say they were an adult cat you had picked up from a shelter.

The only problem is they don‘t get a reward after the chase, so I like to hide treats around and then get her to chase the laser and find them, and it‘s a win win. She gets to burn energy and get super amped up for the hunt, and she also "catches prey" and is totally satisfied :)

Same! As soon as I pick it up my cats come running and they constantly look between me and the laser. They literally hint that they want to play. My cats are outside garden cats who get brought in on night times so whenever I want to get them inside I just shake the laser toy and they come running in and I don’t always use it when they are all in and I think that’s more harsher than allowing them to play with the laser but they get treats after so all is forgiven. One of my cats is quite smart and has somehow taught herself to track the beam back and forth so if she loses it she looks at the pointer and follows the beam to find it again

They are, however, still quite social animals and both like and need companionship--just on their own terms.
In many ways, cats are like autistic humans. They're still social creatures and still in need of social contact and a support network for their own health (both mental and physical!) and safety, but quite stressed out and/or confused when overstimulated or when they don't have easy escape routes and/or "bubbles" of distance/separation from those people and animals they do feel comfortable around. And they frequently need the option to de-stim alone in a place they feel safe after they've had their fill of socialization (or other forms of stimulation) for varying lengths of time (sometimes very long times) depending on the individual.
This can come off as less social or even as antisocial to people who expect all social connections to look a certain way, but really it's just an apples and oranges thing. They really aren't adapted to being alone *all* the time even if they're happy being left alone (or just spending time in the same general area but not actively interacting) *much* of the time.

6:40 i got my first cat from my neighbor who had a cat that had kittens, the day before they moved out they had given out their kittens to anyone who would take them except for one which they wanted to keep but couldn't. At the last second they gave her to me and she grew up into an adult and became very closely connected to me. Well one day the original owners were able to move back into the area and wanted her back (politely, they didn't demand her back they asked nicely if there was any way i could part with her, they loved her and hated that they had to give her up) I gladly gave her back (i did and do miss her but i know shes happy) because i had taken in 2 stray cats by that time (one was hit by a car that nearly severed one of her paws and the other one just walked up to me in a parking lot and started rubbing on me and omfg he was the biggest softie sweetheart you have ever seen) so i gave her back to them. When i brought her over to their place her normal happy outgoing personality completely disappeared and she was so terrified that she didn't even try to run or hide she just completely buried her face into a corner of the couch and refused to move. We responded by placing her in their bedroom and closing the door most of the way giving her plenty of hiding places and peace and quiet to adjust to the new place without feeling trapped (door was open enough for her to walk in and out if she choose to).
A week later we discovered my male cat had gotten her pregnant and she gave birth to 5 healthy kittens hence why she was so absolutely terrified in this new house. Now when i had all three cats i made sure to keep my male separate from my females whenever they were in heat (this was at the start of rona so lots of restrictions and in my town it was very difficult to schedule two spays and a neuter so i had them fully intact for 4 months) i guess this particular time she showed 0 signs of being in heat, my male showed 0 signs of being interested, and my females personality and the way she acted did not change at all plus she had no visible signs of pregnancy. Long story short nobody had any idea she was pregnant, moving her at that time was horrible for her stress levels and i feel absolutely horrid for what i unknowingly put her through. Luckily my toph is a tough girl so she ended up pulling through just fine and is happier then ever. Long story short whenever a cat is exposed to new territory suddenly it stresses them out because they spend their entire lives living with a near constant sense of safety and when that safety is suddenly removed cats go into full panic mode.
Now my male cat Salem (completely black cat) couldnt care less, as long as i was near him he was happy, he liked to sleep in my lap and sit on my shoulder, even slept under the blanket with me in my bed. If he was awake he was near or on me somewhere, loved being held. That cat was the most laid back chill creature that has ever lived and the day he passed away destroyed me. I stopped functioning for a whole week after that and my life has never been the same since.

About cradling, belly rubs, strong smells etc.: as with everything I think it has to do with the individual itself.
For example, while my cat didn't like it to be touched anywhere *near* the belly, even though she presented herself in that fashion towards me very often, the cat of my sister LOVED it.
If a cat presents your belly it means that they trust you 100%, this can even be observed by Tigers and other (large) cats in captivity.

And you sure as hell should not be focusing the entire path of your life around your pet. I understand why people give up pets, and i appreciate it more than just having them put down. Its hard for anyone to do, but sometimes its the situation. I dont care for all the pet finatics who feel they need to publicly shame people if they were to find their pet a new home.

@@natedog69420 Animals who live with me aren't just "pets". They are equal members of the family. I do not value life according to whether one is or isn't human. Hell, I am far warier of humans than I am of animals, seeing as animals rarely sell organs, pick up machine guns and shoot minors or throw nuclear bombs at each other. I understand that it is within endlessly shallow and narcissistic human nature, to unintelligently put their own kind above all others, but I was luckily blessed beyond the realms of averageness and can therefore provide zero understanding. A "pet" is a living being that will provide you with unconditional love and trust (unlike most humans), and as such, the least it deserves is your care and attention. If you are unable to comprehend such relationships and provide that which an intelligent form of existence would know it owes, then you simply shouldn't allow yourself to have a pet and just focus on yourself. Because after all, egocentricity, narcissism and selfishness are indeed the very definitions of an avergae human being.

If he smelled fresh laundry with fabric softener, or febreeze on furnature or even my perfume he'd react like it was catnip rolling around and rubbing himself in it. Including freshly shampoo'd hair or soap scents after a shower. His reaction was quite cute. He also liked being cradled like a baby. He'd position himself that way and would fall asleep on us.

In addition to helping and sharing, we must raise awareness. By sterilizing we are "saving" 14 puppies and more than 30 kittens from this type of situation a year.

Laser pointers can be great play toys as long as you transition to a toy that they can actually catch so they aren't just teased. I often start with a laser pointer and then switch to an interactive toy like a rod with a feather on the end. If you do it before mealtime it's even better because then they are getting to eat after catching their "prey", aka the toy.

I do the same exact thing with my two cats. I will use the laser for a little while and then stop with that. after the laser, I will throw one of their toys across the room, and have them chase it, and actually catch it. That makes them at ease, and they lose the stress of never being able to catch the laser...

Also, yeah, we got my boy from a rescue, and I have noticed he has some very real separation anxiety. Once he understood We Are Family (which took, like, 36 hours of being with him *max*) he got really upset if we went on vacation or something. He is definitely afraid of losing his humans again.
He does, however, freaking love meeting people. So much. And then demanding their laps and not letting them move. He adjusts to new territories very quickly and is aaaaall about the strangers. By meeting three, he may give noseboops. Because you are His now.

Before I got my own place, my family had two dogs (mother and son). My sister stopped by with a cat she had (named Zootie) and said to Mom, "Don't worry. It's only for the weekend." That weekend, Zootie had kittens in Mom's dresser drawer. We kept one, who was named Orange (for obvious reasons). We lived in an area where you could get away with letting your pets out. So both the dogs and the cats were indoor- outdoor.
The unusual thing about Orange is thst we rarely saw him groom himself. He also liked to roll in dirt. So when you patted him, he was dusty. One day it occurred to me that the lack of grooming might be a problem. So I decided to encourage grooming. by praising him effusively whenever I caught him grooming himself. His grooming improved. One time, Zootie happened to be in the room when I started praising him. She gave me a startled look. It was clear from her expression that she was thinking, "What are you praising him for THAT for?!"

Some of these behaviours reminds me a little of myself, as an autistic person. Or more like some criterias for autism. Some even tend to say all cats are autistic, but that's probably not true.
Getting anxious whenever things get heated between a few people, that is something I relate to! I freeze or get anxious every time people nag at each other and one is serious when the other is not.
Predictability is something we need more or less, but more than most. I always feel conflicted about this because life isn't predictable, but yet I need to know a few things before I can do something.
Knowing how many people might not be as chill as we autistic people tend to be with each other (about our looks, routines, quirks and etc), I can almost never relax outside home (with a few exceptions). It's like standing in court, but fortunately, most people my family knows aren't that biased. I still feel with others so much that it feels like I have experienced some stuff I never have. But at the same time, I'm glad I can do that, because it makes it easy for me to understand others.
Cats are sensitive, like us in many ways, but still different. We all have to mind others' weaknesses while encouraging each other to do great things with our strengths! Aha this got long, but thanks for reading it! Peace!
